We determined whether there exists a complementary pathway of cordycepin biosynthesis in wild-type Cordyceps militaris, high-cordycepin-producing strain C. militarisGYS60, and low-cordycepin-producing strain C. militarisGYS80. Differentially expressed genes were identified from the transcriptomes of the three strains. Compared with C. militaris, in GYS60 and GYS80, we identified 145 and 470 upregulated and 96 and 594 downregulated genes. Compared with GYS80, in GYS60, we identified 306 upregulated and 207 downregulated genes. Gene Ontology analysis revealed that upregulated genes were mostly involved in detoxification, antioxidant, and molecular transducer in GYS60. By Clusters of Orthologous Groups of Proteins and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses, eight genes were significantly upregulated: five genes related to purine metabolism, one to ATP production, one to secondary metabolite transport, and one to RNA degradation. In GYS60, cordycepin was significantly increased by upregulation of ATP production, which promoted 3′,5′-cyclic AMP production. Cyclic AMP accelerated 3′-AMP accumulation, and cordycepin continued to be synthesized and exported. We verified the novel complementary pathway by adding the precursor adenosine and analyzing the expression of four key genes involved in the main pathway of cordycepin biosynthesis. Adenosine addition increased cordycepin production by 51.2% and 10.1%, respectively, in C. militarisand GYS60. Four genes in the main pathway in GYS60 were not upregulated.

Hydrogen spillover is an important theme for hydrogen storage and H-involving catalytic reactions. This work shows that catalytic reactivity and selectivity can be revealed by differentiating the energetic characteristics of spilled H species. With the assistance of Ti, F and C in MXenes, Pd1.8Ni@Ti3C2Txpresents a high capacity for spillover hydrogen storage at ambient temperatures, and the rich oxygenated groups act as the main carriers of hydrogen spillover around metal nanoparticles. Thermodynamic analysis reveals that the catalytic performances are energetically dominated by the adsorption enthalpies of the active spilled H species rather than the amount of spillover hydrogen, and can be tuned by alloying and surface modification. The ideas are verified from the excellent catalysis, chemoselectivity and stereoselectivity of Pd1.8Ni@Ti3C2Txin semihydrogenations. The strategy of maximizing catalytic performances is applicable to other Pd-based bimetals@Ti3C2Tx, such as Pd2.6Co@Ti3C2Txand Pd1.5Fe@Ti3C2Tx, and provides new energetics perspectives to understand the catalytic mechanism in spillover-involving chemical procedures.

Sluggish sulfur conversion kinetics pose an ongoing challenge in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Here, we present a solution through far-reaching long-range electronic regulation (LRER) on single-atom active sites. N-doped carbons (Co-NC) are implanted with densely-distributed Co single atoms, and supported on Ti3C2TxMXene substrates to assemble 3D Co-NC/MXene catalyst. MXene effectively mediates interlayer charge transfer (∼0.70 |e|) contrasted with popular carbon materials (∼0.06 |e|) to produce LRER through surrounding carbon atoms. The synergy of LRER with near-range electronic regulation (NRER) tunes electronic structures, and enhances heterostructural stability, thus provoking desirous catalytic kinetics of Co single atoms in sulfur reduction. Thereby, the Co-NC/MXene/S cathodes exhibit impressive rate performance and excellent cycling stability (only 0.015% capacity decay per cycle over 600 cycles at 4 C) in LSBs, surpassing state-of-the-art sulfur cathodes. This work reveals the importance of LRER for improved catalysis, and provides new guidance to tailor heterostructures to achieve high-efficient catalysts in various process.

The nanoplasmonic metal-driven photocatalytic activity depends heavily on the spacing between metal nanoparticles (NPs) and semiconductors, and this work shows that ethylene glycol (EG) is an ideal candidate for interface spacer. Controlling the synthetic systems at pH 3, the composite of Ag NPs with EG-stabilized amorphous TiO2(Ag/TiO2-3) was synthesized by the facile light-induced reduction. It is verified that EG spacers can set up suitable geometric arrangement in the composite: the twin hydroxyls act as stabilizers to bind Ag NPs and TiO2together and the nonconductive alkyl chains consisting only of two CH2are able to separate the two building blocks completely and also provide the shortest channels for an efficient transfer of radiation energies to reach TiO2. Employed as photocatalysts in hydrogen evolution under visible light, amorphous TiO2hardly exhibits the catalytic activity due to high defect density, whereas Ag/TiO2-3 represents a remarkably high catalytic efficiency. The enhancement mechanism of the reaction rate is proposed by the analysis of the compositional, structural, and optical properties from a series of Ag/TiO2composites.

The selective semihydrogenation of alkynes is of importance in many industrial applications, but great challenges still remain in the full utilization of noble metals for the catalysis of hydrogen spillover on mixed supports. As Pd0is chemically loaded on Cu2O/TiO2, this work reports that Pd0is imparted with a high electron density to dissociate H2efficiently and the active Cu2O hydride is responsible for the high catalytic activity in spillover semihydrogenations. As compared with inert Pd–Cu2O/SiO2interfaces, the studies demonstrate that the high chemoselectivity and stereoselectivity originate from the well-defined p–n junctions of Cu2O/TiO2, therein alkynes are adsorbed in their transconfigurations and the product is desorbed from them. As catalyzed by 1.3Pd–3.6Cu2O/TiO2in 1 atm H2at 30 °C, the semihydrogenations can be completed in 90 min with 97.6% chemoselectivity for phenylacetylene, and in 45 min with 92.4% stereoselectivity for methyl non-2-ynoate. These studies provide new ideas to design and synthesize noble metal-based catalysts through manipulating the interface properties of the mixed supports.

In recent years, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been explored as emulsifiers for the fabrication of Pickering emulsions and then used for hybrid material synthesis and interface catalysis. Nevertheless, stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsions stabilized by MOFs have been rarely reported so far, although they are of great importance for fundamental research studies and practical applications. Herein, for the first time, triethylenetetramine (TETA)-functionalized MOFs (ZIF-90/TETA) have been designed, synthesized, and used for fabricating CO2-/N2-response Pickering emulsions. It is shown that even at the ZIF-90/TETA content of 0.25 wt %, the functional MOF can still efficiently emulsify n-hexane and water to form a high internal phase Pickering emulsion. Importantly, the Pickering emulsion can be easily and reversibly switched between emulsification and demulsification by bubbling of CO2and N2alternatively at atmospheric pressure. The possible mechanism of the CO2/N2switchable emulsion is investigated by zeta potential, water contact angle, interfacial tension, 13C NMR spectroscopy, and an optical microscope. It is found that the acid–base reaction of CO2with TETA anchored on the surface of ZIF-90 leads to the production of hydrophilic ammonium bicarbonate and carbamate, which results in the emulsification of the Pickering emulsion. However, when N2is bubbled to remove CO2, the reverse reaction takes place to cause the demulsification of the Pickering emulsion. Moreover, the CO2/N2switchable Pickering emulsion has been successfully used as a microreactor for Knoevenagel reactions to demonstrate a highly efficient integration of chemical reaction, product separation, and ZIF-90/TETA recycling for a sustainable chemical process.

In this study, hot compression tests of (Cu43Zr48Al9)98Y2bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) were performed, and their microstructure and thermal properties after the deformation were studied to explore the appropriate range of their optimum processing parameters. The experimental results show that the superplastic deformation of (Cu43Zr48Al9)98Y2bulk metallic glasses depends mainly on the temperature and strain rate. It is suitable for superplastic processing when the alloys are in the state of Newtonian flow and do not crystallise. The appropriate processing parameters of (Cu43Zr48Al9)98Y2BMGs are the temperatures and strain rates, which are below the “dividing line”. And when the temperature is above 733 K, the strain rate must be >1 × 10−3 s−1.

This work developed a facile colloidal route to synthesize BH4–-capped PdxAgynanoparticles (NPs) in water using the reducing ionic liquids of [Cnmim]BH4, and the resulting NPs were prone to form the nanocomposites with [amim]+-modified reduced graphene (RG). The removal of the metal-free inorganic ions of BH4–can create the profoundly exposed interfaces on the PdxAgyNPs during the electrooxidation, and favor the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in lowering energy barrier. The counterions of [Cnmim]+can gather ethanol, OH–ions, and the reaction intermediates on catalysts, and synergistically interact with RG to facilitate the charge transfer in nanocomposites. The interface-modified RG nanosheets can effectively segregate the PdxAgyNPs from aggregation during the EOR. Along with the small size of 4.7 nm, the high alloying degree of 60.2%, the large electrochemical active surface area of 64.1 m2g–1, and the great peak current density of 1501 mA cm–2mg–1, Pd1Ag2@[C2mim]BH4-amimRG nanocomposite exhibits the low oxidation potentials, strong poison resistance, and stable catalytic activity for EOR in alkaline media, and hence can be employed as a promising anodic catalyst in ethanol fuel cells.

Recently, the catalytic activity of Lindqvist-type hexamolybdate [Mo6O19]2–in the oxidation of an aniline derivative (LPhNH2, L = substituent) was demonstrated by Wei and co-workers (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2021, 60, 6382–6385). Herein, taking phenylamine (PhNH2) oxidation to azobenzene (PhNNPh) as a model reaction, we report the density functional theory investigation of the catalytic mechanism of [Mo6O19]2–and illustrate the critical experimental phenomena. During the catalytic reaction, once the preassociation of [Mo6O19]2–and PhNH2takes place, electron transfer and proton transfer immediately proceed to form an N radical intermediate. The higher the highest occupied molecular orbital energy of the substrate, the easier the formation of the N radical intermediate. The N–N bond formation proceeds via the second PhNH2nucleophilic attack on the N radical intermediate. The substituent position and the N reaction site of the substrate have a significant effect on the second PhNH2nucleophilic attack process. In the reaction process, the six MoVIof [Mo6O19]2–are still hexacoordinated, which is defined as the outer-sphere pathway. One of the factors determining the product selectivity is the electrostatic repulsion between LPhNH2and the N radical intermediate. The experiment reveals that the product yield is increased by the addition of Na2S2O3, while the catalytic reaction is completely deactivated with Na2CO3or K3PO4. Based on the proposed mechanism, the experimental observation was rationalized. The S2O32–part of Na2S2O3has a similar function as the electron-withdrawing substituent due to its low lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy, which reduces the LUMO energy of the N radical intermediate and thus facilitates PhNH2nucleophilic attack, while the CO32–part of Na2CO3or PO43–part of K3PO4has an undesirable effect on the electrophilicity of the N radical intermediate, resulting in the interruption of the catalytic reaction. This work would provide a detailed understanding of the catalytic reaction.

The UV absorption spectra of aqueous solutions of [C4mim][Br], [C4mim][BF4], and [C8mim][Br], along with the differential UV spectra of aqueous [C8mim][Br] solutions, were measured at room temperature in this work. It is found that three transformations, denoted respectively as α, βand γ, can occur over the interested concentration range of solutions due to ionic liquid aggregation. Further, the content of ionic liquids and the wavelength of absorption maximum at these transformations are determined, and the implications at each transformation are analyzed. As a result, this paper discusses the effects of imidazolium cation, alkyl chain length and counterion type on the aggregation behavior and the contribution of interactions (such as hydrogen bonds, Coulombic, aliphatic and π–πstacking interactions) to the aggregation of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium salts in water. Moreover, the possible structures of both aggregate and bulk phase in the aqueous solutions of ionic liquids are predicted also.

Mixtures of NaSCN−montmorillonite (MMT) and the electrolytes of both poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)−MMT and PEO−NaSCN−MMT were prepared, and the MMT interfacial effect and the interactions of PEO with MMT and NaSCN were investigated by FT-IR and X-ray diffraction measurements at room temperature. It is shown from these experimental results that MMT surface possesses Lewis acid centers, and the interactions of MMT with PEO and PEO−NaSCN can occur several ways, including PEO intercalation, the solvation of PEO toward the interlayer cations, the grain boundary effect, Lewis acid−base interactions, and the epitaxial effect. When Na−MMT content is high enough, the epitaxial effect cannot be observed in P(EO)20NaSCN−Na−MMT electrolytes, whereas such effect occurs significantly in PEO−Na−MMT electrolytes. The Lewis acid−base interactions between PEO and Na−MMT are the main interactions in the electrolytes with high Na−MMT content. The grain boundary effect and the intercalation of PEO in MMT galleries become the dominant interactions in the electrolytes in which Na−MMT content is less than 5%. Moreover, the effect of these interactions on the PEO conformation and the electrolytic performances is also analyzed in this paper.

Two new species, Urocystis arxanensis on Elymus sp. and Urocystis xilinhotensis on Bromus pumpellianus and Bromus inermis, are described from Nei Mongol and Xinjiang Autonomous Regions of China. A key to the species of Urocystis on Elymus in China is included.

An electromotive force (emf) method was used to determine thermodynamic parameters of interaction of HCl with normal 1-butanol (n-BuOH) in water between 5 and 45°C. A comparison of pair interaction parameters for HCl–n-BuOH with those for HCl–t-BuOH (tert butyl alcohol) showed that there is an obvious difference between them. This was interpreted in terms of steric structure of their carbon chains. The group Gibbs free energy parameters ( $$G_{HCl} - {CH}_{2} $$ and $$G_{HCl} - {OH} $$ ) for the HCl–alcohol–water systems were derived according to the Savage–Wood group additivity principle. These group parameters can be used to evaluate pair interaction parameters of HCl with alcohol molecules.

The viscosities of aqueous sodium alginate solutions were measured in different NaCl concentrations (C s) at 298 K. Based on the Odijk–Skolnick–Fixman theories, the electrostatic persistence lengths were calculated for various ionic strengths. The intrinsic persistence length of sodium alginate in solution was determined to be 125 Å by the method suggested by Odijk. In the region of $\hbox{C}_{\rm S}^{-1/2}> 6.5$, the increase in intrinsic viscosity, [η], for sodium alginate on decreasing the C s is due to the larger contribution of electrostatic persistence length to the total persistence length, and the departure of [η] calc from [η] expl is attributed to the variation of the Flory Φ constant with ionic strength. A peak was observed in the plot of reduced viscosity v. sodium alginate concentration at a constant low ionic strength. As in the treatment of Rinaudo et al., this maximum in reduced viscosity is attributed to a preferential intermolecular distance. The roles of electrostatic persistence length, the critical inter-rod spacing and the effect of added salt concentration on this maximum are discussed. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The M/G ratio, dyad and triad frequencies in the sodium alginate chain, were determined from ¹³C-nmr spectra. The interactions of sodium alginate in solution with the univalent cations K⁺ ion and Na⁺ ion have been investigated by viscometry and membrane osmometry. The dependencies of intrinsic viscosity, Huggins constant, and second virial coefficient on ionic strength were observed, and the maximums in reduced viscosity were obtained in low KCl and NaCl concentrations, respectively. These show that the electroviscous effects play an important role in polyelectrolyte solution, and the effect of the Na⁺ ion on aqueous solution of sodium alginate is greater than the K⁺ ion. The experimental observations are interpreted in terms of ion-pair formation with carboxyl groups of mannuronate and isolated guluronate residues and cooperation “egg-box” binding between polyguluronate chain sequence. The difference of interaction between univalent cations and alginate chains in solution is attributed to the ability of their binding with the polyion, which depends on the properties of ions itself. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The interaction mode between cupric ions and alginate in aqueous solutions during sol–gel transition has been experimentally examined at different temperatures. Some clusters were found to pass through a conformational transformation as the temperature increased, i.e. clusters formed by intramolecular crosslinks turned into intermolecular crosslinking clusters. This transformation of the interaction mode is not reversible as the temperature decreases. The interaction mode between cupric ions and alginate was re‐examined by optical absorption techniques, and results suggest that the coordination of cupric ions mainly occurs to carboxyl groups and that the stoichiometric ratio f is proportional to the fraction of crosslinks formed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Based on the measurement of the concentration dependence of the osmotic pressure of sodium alginate aqueous solution in different concentrations of potassium nitrate, the contribution of polyion charges to the second virial coefficient was predicted. According to this analysis, an equation A2=A2, O+A2, Dwas obtained, and a method was introduced to determine the θ‐point of polyelectrolyte solution from A2determined by membrane osmometry. This is important in the investigation field of polymer solution theory and was proved to be correct if each polyelectrolyte molecule was ionized completely. The θ‐solvent of sodium alginate aqueous solution was measured to be the concentration in 1.41 molar potassium nitrate per litre at 30°C, and this experimental result indicated that Manning's polyelectrolyte solution theory model is fairly successful in explaining the colligative properties of polyelectrolyte solution. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of diesel from direct coal liquefaction (DDCL) and diesel from indirect coal liquefaction (DICL) on combustion and emissions. A six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine fueled with DDCL, DICL, petroleum diesel (PD), 58% DDCL, and 42% DICL blended by volume (BD58) is used. The experiments are carried out at 1400 and 2300rpm engine speeds and various engine loads (10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 90% of the full-load). The results show that the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of PD was higher than that of CTL (the maximum difference was 2%) at medium and high loads. At 10% load of 1400 rpm, the CO, HC and formaldehyde emissions of DDCL are 88.9%, 44.3% and 26.5% higher than those of PD respectively, and the CO, HC, and formaldehyde emissions of DICL are 30.1%, 15.3%, and 15.2% lower than those of PD. The differences among four fuels decrease rapidly with the increase of load. The NOXemissions of PD are the highest due to high nitrogen content (102.3 μg/g) and low hydrogen-carbon (H/C) ratio. The fuel with higher cetane number has less formaldehyde emission at low loads, while the fuel with lower H/C has less formaldehyde emission at high loads. The particle size distribution shows a bimodal shape at different loads and the peak particle size of accumulation mode and nucleation mode all increases with the increase of load. The particulate emission of different fuels from high to low is the order of PD > DDCL > BD58 > DICL. In addition, the emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and toxicity equivalent (TE) of PD are highest at all loads. The proportion of soluble organic fractions (SOF) from DDCL, DICL, and BD58 is higher than that of PD.

The emission of NH3into atmosphere is seriously harmful for human health and public safety, thus the capture and recovery of NH3from ammonia emissions is highly desirable. In recent years, many kinds of solid adsorbents have been exploited to absorb NH3. However, these materials do not show the advantages of high uptake capacity and good recyclability at the same time. Here, nontoxic and low cost few-layer BiI3nanosheets have been prepared from bulk BiI3powder by a simple and efficient liquid phase exfoliation strategy using green solvents and then applied for the NH3capture for the first time. The results show that the adsorption capacity of NH3of BiI3nanosheets reaches up to 22.6 mmol/g at 1.0 bar and 25 °C, which approaches the record value for NH3adsorption. Importantly, the NH3uptake in BiI3nanosheets is completely reversible and no clear loss in uptake capacity is observed after 10 cycles of adsorption–desorption. Furthermore, the BiI3nanosheets exhibit remarkable selectivity for the separation of NH3/CO2at 70 °C with theoretical selectivity coefficient of 700, which is promising for the selective separation of NH3and CO2in hot tail gas of some industrial processes. Mechanism studies indicate that such superior NH3capacity, excellent reversibility and remarkable selectivity are primarily attributed to the Bi3+-NH3coordination interactions.
