In a material of 76 human skulls the authors have tried to locate the route and shape of the greater petrosal nerve canal and pterygoid nerve canal, with special attention given to deviations from the typical route.

Psychosomatic studies were made in 128 patients with allergic rhinitis. After the allergic and clinical anamnesis the patients were divided into two groups: those ill with hay fever (91 patients) and those suffering from perennial allergic rhinitis (37 patients). The assessment of the role of psychogenous factors in both varieties of allergic rhinitis was the main purpose of the investigation. The investigation showed that psychogenous factors are practically of no importance in hay fevers. Their role is great, however, when perennial allergic rhinitis is involved.

Patients with vasomotor rhinitis (28) and polle-nosis (23) were subjected to psychosomatic examination and treated either by acupuncture or phonostimulation exclusively. Acupuncture was performed after the classical method in 22 patients and phonostimulation in 29. Evaluation of the results was based on laryngological examinations and appraisals entered by the patients in special personal diaries. In pollenosis the condition was unchanged by the treatment. In vasomotor rhinitis, on the other hand, in which psychic factors were of importance, some of the patients usually improved temporarily at the beginning of treatment, whereas a few suffered exacerbation. These effects may be attributable to suggestion.

Airborne and allergenic pollen types were identified in the area of Warsaw in the years 1983-1987. Over the same period of time, skin tests reactions were analysed in 400 hay fever patients. The aim of our study was to determine whether the most abundant pollen types at a given time did evoke hay fever symptoms in our allergy patients as confirmed by positive skin responses. In February, March and April 10.8% of patients showed allergy to deciduous tree pollen, while in May allergy to conifer pollen was confirmed in 2%. The most numerous group of patients demonstrating pollinosis due to grass and rye pollen attended the Clinic in June and July. In the autumn (September-October) symptoms due to weed pollens predominated in our patients.

Natural gamma background dose rates 1 m above ground level were evaluated using MCP-N detectors (LiF:Mg,Cu,P, produced at INP Krak�w) at over 30 points, and the natural radioactivity of samples of materials deposited at the Przezchlebie industrial stockpile gathered from some of these locations assessed off-site using gamma ray spectrometry. Measurements were made in late spring over different parts of the stockpile and the neighbouring terrain, and repeated after one year. Above-ground gamma dose rates correlated well with the activity of elements in the 232Th and 238U series, the 226Ra sub-series and 40K measured in the material samples. LiF:Mg,Cu,P (MCP-N) detectors are extremely convenient for use in environmental dosimetry as their stability and sensitivity allow field exposures to take no longer than two weeks, instead of three months required for LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) detectors. This considerably speeds up measurements and may prevent theft or displacement of dosemeters in industrial conditions.
