Personality disorders (PDs), often presenting as co-occurring with other mental health conditions, can be successfully managed once identified. Through comprehensive diagnostic assessment, including an evaluation of personality functioning, effective and comprehensive treatment plans can be developed. By establishing a strong therapeutic alliance with the primary psychotherapist and a robust therapeutic milieu through which the multidisciplinary treatment team operates, even the most complex clinical scenarios, with co-occurring PDs, can be understood and effectively managed. There are now several validated approaches for treating PDs, with the residential setting serving as an effective option for the most complex, treatment resistant presentations.

Increased datafication of schooling, a common trend in Australia, the UK, Canada, and the USA, involves the use of standardized testing and its associated systems and practices to achieve high-stakes goals. The purpose of this study, set in an urban, low-income, predominately Black neighborhood in the southeast USA, was to better understand the influence of increased datafication on caregiver perceptions of learning. The qualitative study involved one-on-one semi-structured interviews with caregivers of K-8 public school children. Results show that although children learned many new concepts when examined through the lens of funds of knowledge, these caregivers repeatedly returned to ideas of what counts for schooling as it related to test scores. Implications include how the datafication of schooling devalues the families’ funds of knowledge in their homes.

A large body of evidence connects access to greenspace with substantial benefits to physical and mental health. In urban settings where access to greenspace can be limited, park access and use have been associated with higher levels of physical activity, improved physical health, and lower levels of markers of mental distress. Despite the potential health benefits of urban parks, little is known about how park usage varies across locations (between or within cities) or over time.

Objective: To review the current literature on the efficacy and safety of cardiac myosin inhibitors (CMIs) for the treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).Data Sources: A literature search was conducted on PubMed from origin to April 2023, using the search terms “MYK-461,” “mavacamten,” “CK-3773274,” and “aficamten.” Studies were limited to English-based literature, human subjects, and clinical trials resulting in the inclusion of 13 articles. ClinicalTrials.gov was also used with the same search terms for ongoing and completed trials.Study Selection and Data Extraction: Only phase II and III studies were included in this review except for pharmacokinetic studies that were used to describe drug properties.Data Synthesis: CMIs enable cardiac muscle relaxation by decreasing the number of myosin heads that can bind to actin and form cross-bridges. Mavacamten, the first Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug in this class, has been shown to improve hemodynamic, functional, and quality of life measures in HCM with obstruction. In addition, aficamten is likely to become the next FDA-approved CMI with promising phase II data and an ongoing phase III trial expected to release results in the next year.Relevance to Patient Care and Clinical Practice in Comparison with Existing Drugs: CMIs provide a novel option for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, particularly in those not suitable for septal reduction therapy. Utilization of these agents requires knowledge of drug interactions, dose titration schemes, and monitoring parameters for safety and efficacy.Conclusions: CMIs represent a new class of disease-specific drugs for treatment of HCM. Cost-effectiveness studies are needed to delineate the role of these agents in patient therapy.

Patients with disorders of consciousness who survive to discharge following severe acute brain injury may face profoundly complex medical, ethical, and psychosocial challenges during their courses of recovery and rehabilitation. Although issues encountered in caring for such patients during acute hospitalization have received substantial attention, ethical challenges that may arise in subacute and chronic phases have been underexplored. Shedding light on these issues, this article explores the landscape of normative issues in the course of treating and facilitating access to care for persons with disorders of consciousness during rehabilitation and examines potential implications for patients, clinicians, family members, and society.

Off-grid areas pose economic and technical challenges, often overlooked in national power planning. In the Philippines, the National Power Corporation manages mainly oil-based off-grid power assets, with issues of intermittency and reliability. This study proposes an optimal energy mix using non-preemptive Goal Programming combined with a pair-wise comparison to determine the penalty weights to balance energy security, affordability, sustainability, and self-sufficiency goals. Marinduque province serves as a case study, where it is identified that including renewable energy in the grid could help balance energy goals and reduce generation costs and emissions. Increased use of renewables can also satisfy demand and self-sufficiency goals, making electricity more affordable. Once electricity becomes more affordable, subsidies can be reduced and later on be removed. The study's recommendations can be a starting point for private investors and government agencies to improve the energy sector in off-grid areas.

Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) are widely utilized around the globe from different base forms as it is one of the most dependable renewable resources that technological advancements have offered. However, different perceptions of the usage of NPPs emerged from different generations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acceptance of nuclear energy as an alternative source of energy among Generation Z in the Philippines by utilizing an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) approach. An online questionnaire which consisted of 31 items was distributed using a purposive sampling approach and 450 respondents of Generation Z voluntarily answered. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) showed that the knowledge regarding NPP had significant effects on risk perception and benefit perception which subsequently led to subjective norms. In addition, perceived behavioral control and subjective norms had significant effects on behavioral intention which led to nuclear acceptance. Interestingly, the respondents perceived the benefit of NPP as slightly higher than the perceived risk. With these, it was clear that the commissioning Nuclear Power Plant must consider as an alternative source of electric energy in the Philippines. Moreover, this study is one of the first studies that investigated the acceptance of NPP among Generation Z. Lastly, the model could be a basis to strengthen the acceptance strategy of opening NPP among Generation Z, particularly in developing countries.

The power plant accident is considered one of the man-made disasters in many developing countries, including the Philippines. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing behavioral-based safety (BBS) of coal-fired power plant workers which subsequently led to their active safety participation (SPT). In total, 201 coal-fired power plant workers in the Philippines answered the questionnaire consisting of 60 items using a purposive sampling approach. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) revealed that personal measures (PM) had significant effects on safety incentives (SI), safety management system (SMS) and safety perception (SP). SP also had significant effect on BBS which subsequently led to SPT. Finally, SMS had significant effect on safety culture (SC) which subsequently led to safety communication (SCM), BBS and SPT. This study is the first to explore BBS in the Philippine coal-fired power plant, and can positively reinforce SPT of workers in the coal-fired power plant industry.

A core feature of behavior analysis is the single-subject design, in which each subject serves as its own control. This approach is powerful for identifying manipulations that are causal to behavioral changes but often fails to account for individual differences, particularly when coupled with a small sample size. It is more common for other subfields of psychology to use larger-N approaches; however, these designs also often fail to account for the individual by focusing on aggregate-level data only. Moving forward, it is important to study individual differences to identify subgroups of the population that may respond differently to interventions and to improve the generalizability and reproducibility of behavioral science. We propose that large-N datasets should be used in behavior analysis to better understand individual subject variability. First, we describe how individual differences have been historically treated and then outline practical reasons to study individual subject variability. Then, we describe various methods for analyzing large-N datasets while accounting for the individual, including correlational analyses, machine learning, mixed-effects models, clustering, and simulation. We provide relevant examples of these techniques from published behavioral literature and from a publicly available dataset compiled from five different rat experiments, which illustrates both group-level effects and heterogeneity across individual subjects. We encourage other behavior analysts to make use of the substantial advancements in online data sharing to compile large-N datasets and use statistical approaches to explore individual differences.

Neuropixels are silicon-based electrophysiology-recording probes with high channel count and recording-site density. These probes offer a turnkey platform for measuring neural activity with single-cell resolution and at a scale that is beyond the capabilities of current clinically approved devices. Our team demonstrated the first-in-human use of these probes during resection surgery for epilepsy or tumors and deep brain stimulation electrode placement in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Here, we provide a better understanding of the capabilities and challenges of using Neuropixels as a research tool to study human neurophysiology, with the hope that this information may inform future efforts toward regulatory approval of Neuropixels probes as research devices. In perioperative procedures, the major concerns are the initial sterility of the device, maintaining a sterile field during surgery, having multiple referencing and grounding schemes available to de-noise recordings (if necessary), protecting the silicon probe from accidental contact before insertion and obtaining high-quality action potential and local field potential recordings. The research team ensures that the device is fully operational while coordinating with the surgical team to remove sources of electrical noise that could otherwise substantially affect the signals recorded by the sensitive hardware. Prior preparation using the equipment and training in human clinical research and working in operating rooms maximize effective communication within and between the teams, ensuring high recording quality and minimizing the time added to the surgery. The perioperative procedure requires ~4 h, and the entire protocol requires multiple weeks.

Statistical errors in preclinical science are a barrier to reproducibility and translation. For instance, linear models (e.g., ANOVA, linear regression) may be misapplied to data that violate assumptions. In behavioral neuroscience and psychopharmacology, linear models are frequently applied to interdependent or compositional data, which includes behavioral assessments where animals concurrently choose between chambers, objects, outcomes, or types of behavior (e.g., forced swim, novel object, place/social preference). The current study simulated behavioral data for a task with four interdependent choices (i.e., increased choice of a given outcome decreases others) using Monte Carlo methods. 16,000 datasets were simulated (1000 each of 4 effect sizes by 4 sample sizes) and statistical approaches evaluated for accuracy. Linear regression and linear mixed effects regression (LMER) with a single random intercept resulted in high false positives (>60%). Elevated false positives were attenuated in an LMER with random effects for all choice-levels and a binomial logistic mixed effects regression. However, these models were underpowered to reliably detect effects at common preclinical sample sizes. A Bayesian method using prior knowledge for control subjects increased power by up to 30%. These results were confirmed in a second simulation (8000 datasets). These data suggest that statistical analyses may often be misapplied in preclinical paradigms, with common linear methods increasing false positives, but potential alternatives lacking power. Ultimately, using informed priors may balance statistical requirements with ethical imperatives to minimize the number of animals used. These findings highlight the importance of considering statistical assumptions and limitations when designing research studies.

Associations between religiosity and sexual attitudes and behaviors among college students have been documented. The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which personal religiosity and organizational religiosity were predictive of sexual behaviors. Data were collected at a southeastern university using a self-report questionnaire. Results for females indicated the set of predictors was statistically significant for seven of the eight sexual behaviors (all except for anal intercourse in the last month). The purpose of the study was to determine whether a sexual 'double standard' existed for casual heterosexual behavior (hooking-up) and condom provision. Participants (n = 500 college students) completed a questionnaire that included one of six vignettes (three vignette types, male or female model). Participants evaluated statements, comprising three scales, about the model depicted in the vignette. Data were analyzed using SAS programs.
