Objective: To investigate refractive outcomes and associated factors after sutureless flanged intrascleral fixation of intraocular lens (SFIF-IOL). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of consecutive patients who underwent SFIF-IOL at a single centre. The prediction error (PE; difference between the achieved and target refractive error) and absolute PE (APE) were analysed. Risk factors associated with refractive surprise, defined as APE > +0.5 D, were investigated using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: Ninety-one eyes were included. At the final follow-up, the mean PE and APE were +0.07 ± 0.88 and +0.68 ± 0.56 D, respectively. Refractive surprise was observed in 44 eyes (54.3%) and was associated with a shorter axial length (AL) [odds ratio, 0.825; 95% confidence interval, 0.688–0.991; P= 0.039]. APE showed a significant correlation with AL at the final visit (⍴ = −0.269, P= 0.010), and eyes with AL ≥ 26 mm had significantly lower APE than did those with AL of 24–26 mm (P= 0.021) and AL < 24 mm (P= 0.0059). Conclusions: The refractive outcome after SFIF-IOL using manufacturer’s A constant was favourable on average. Eyes with a longer AL were more likely to show a smaller deviation from the target refraction.

Pseudognaphalium affine (P. affine), a medicinal plant, has long been used to treat various diseases due to its astringent and vulnerary effects. These therapeutic benefits are largely attributed to high contents of phytochemicals, such as flavonoids and polyphenols, that have anti-inflammatory and tissue-protective activities. Herein, we investigated the potential of dicaffeoylquinic acids (diCQAs), polyphenols from P. affine, as a novel treatment for dry eye disease (DED).

Microbiota promotes or inhibits the pathogenesis of a range of immune-mediated disorders. Although recent studies have elucidated the role of gut microbiota in ocular disease, the effect of ocular microbiota remains unclear. Herein, we explored the role of ocular commensal bacteria in non-infectious corneal inflammation and angiogenesis in a mouse model of suture-induced corneal neovascularization. Results revealed that the ocular surface harbored a microbial community consisting mainly of Actinobacteria, Firmicutesand Proteobacteria. Elimination of the ocular commensal bacteria by oral broad-spectrum antibiotics or topical fluoroquinolone significantly suppressed corneal inflammation and neovascularization. Disease amelioration was associated with reduced numbers of CD11b+Ly6C+and CD11b+Ly6G+myeloid cells, not Foxp3+regulatory T cells, in the spleen, blood, and draining lymph nodes. Therapeutic concentrations of fluoroquinolone, however, did not directly affect immune cells or vascular endothelial cells. In addition, data from a clinical study showed that antibiotic treatment in combination with corticosteroids, as compared with corticosteroid monotherapy, induced faster remission of corneal inflammation and new vessels in pediatric patients with non-infectious marginal keratitis. Altogether, our findings demonstrate a pathogenic role of ocular microbiota in non-infectious inflammatory disorders leading to sight-threatening corneal neovascularization, and suggest a therapeutic potential of targeting commensal microbes in treating ocular inflammation.

To validate the international chronic ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) diagnostic criteria (ICCGVHD) compared to the National Institute of Health diagnostic criteria 2014 (NIH2014) for chronic ocular GVHD.

We argue why interpretability should have primacy alongside empiricism for several reasons: first, if machine learning (ML) models are beginning to render some of the high-risk healthcare decisions instead of clinicians, these models pose a novel medicolegal and ethical frontier that is incompletely addressed by current methods of appraising medical interventions like pharmacological therapies; second, a number of judicial precedents underpinning medical liability and negligence are compromised when ‘autonomous’ ML recommendations are considered to be en par with human instruction in specific contexts; third, explainable algorithms may be more amenable to the ascertainment and minimisation of biases, with repercussions for racial equity as well as scientific reproducibility and generalisability. We conclude with some reasons for the ineludible importance of interpretability, such as the establishment of trust, in overcoming perhaps the most difficult challenge ML will face in a high-stakes environment like healthcare: professional and public acceptance.

The cornea is a transparent tissue devoid of blood and lymphatic vessels. However, various inflammatory conditions can cause hemangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in the cornea, compromising transparency and visual acuity. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) have therapeutic potentials in a variety of diseases because of anti-inflammatory properties. Herein, we investigated the effects of MSCs on corneal angiogenesis using a model of suture-induced inflammatory corneal neovascularization. Data demonstrated that an intravenous administration of MSCs suppressed corneal inflammation and neovascularization, inhibiting both hemangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. MSCs reduced the levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C, VEGF-D, Tek, MRC1, and MRC2 in the cornea, which are expressed by pro-angiogenic macrophages. Moreover, the number of CD11b+monocytes/macrophages in the cornea, spleen, peripheral blood, and draining lymph nodes was decreased by MSCs. Depletion of circulating CD11b+monocytes by blocking antibodies replicated the effects of MSCs. Importantly, knockdown of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)-stimulated gene/protein 6 (TSG-6) in MSCs abrogated the effects of MSCs in inhibiting corneal hemangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis and monocyte/macrophage infiltration. Together, the results suggest that MSCs inhibit inflammatory neovascularization in the cornea by suppressing pro-angiogenic monocyte/macrophage recruitment in a TSG-6-dependent manner.

AbstractThis paper investigates a possibility of sustainable growth in a multi-output endogenous growth framework where the capital accumulation takes place mainly through the production of the dirty manufactured goods. It is shown that in a closed economy, economic growth is not environmentally sustainable, even under an optimal pollution tax unless the consumption elasticity of substitution between clean and dirty goods approaches infinity as in a small open economy which exports dirty goods. There exists a minimal threshold level of the ratio of clean to dirty capital that ensures sustainable growth in a closed economy.

To clarify the effect of A-site donor doping on the phase transition and the strain enhancement, we investigated the crystal structure, as well as the piezoelectric, ferroelectric and electric-field-induced strain (EFIS) properties of La-doped Bi1/2(Na0.82K0.18)1/2TiO3(BNKT) ceramics. Similarly to our previous studies on BNKT doped with B-site donors such as Nb and Ta, La doping was found to induce a ferroelectric-to-nonpolar (FE-NP) phase transition, leading to a large enhancement in EFIS just after the transition. The result provides strong evidence that a close relationship exists between the Goldschumidt’s tolerance factor and the FE-NP transition in BNKT, which has been observed in B-site-donor or isovalent impurity-doped BNKT.
