The in vitroantioxidant properties of some new benzazole derivatives (1-10)such as benzoxazoles, benzimidazoles, and benzothiazoles were determined by their effects on the rat liver microsomal NADPH-dependent lipid peroxidation (LP) level, the scavenging of superoxide anion and the stable radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Compounds 1, 2, 4and 6,showed potent scavenging effect on superoxide radical at 10-3M. Compound 8,5-nitro-2-(phenoxymethyl)benzimidazole, strongly inhibited lipid peroxidation at 10-3M concentration.

This paper aimed at reviewing the involvement of neuropeptides in various psychiatric diseases, particularly in depression, and anxiety disorders. General features of neuropeptides are first described, including the history of their discovery, their definition, classification, biosynthesis, transport, release, inactivation, as well as their interaction with specific neuronal receptors. The differences with classical neurotransmitters are mentioned, as well as the different patterns of co-transmission. Finally, different mechanisms, both at the cellular and at the systemic level, are proposed that may explain the involvement of these molecules in various psychiatric diseases. Indeed, at the cellular level, a neuropeptide can be involved in a psychiatric disease, either because it is co-localized with a classical neurotransmitter involved in a disease, or because the neuropeptide-containing neuron projects on a target neuron involved in the disease. At the systemic level, a neuropeptide can play a direct role in the expression of a symptom of the disease. This is illustrated by different exemples.

The aim of this study was the characterization of the extracellular polysaccharide (gum) from freshwater microalgae Chlorella sp. For this purpose, determination of the component monosaccharides and minerals were chosen as the structural properties, while the thickening effect on aqueous systems and the effect on the dispersed phase volume fraction of oil in water (o/w) emulsions were selected as the functional properties. The gum was found to contain the monosaccharides: glucuronic acid (385 g/kg); arabinose (325 g/kg); glucose (193 g/kg); fucose [α- and β-anomers (31 g/kg and 14 g/kg, respectively)]; and the minerals: calcium (16.3 g/kg); sodium (7.7 g/kg); potassium (20.4 g/kg); and zinc (1.1 g/kg) reported on a dry weight basis. The gum from Chlorella sp. was found to be a potential thickening agent. Its thickening and secondary emulsifying effects were found to be compatible with most of the food-grade salts when these salts are used in the recommended range (1 to 30 g/L) for foods. It was found that its thickening and secondary emulsifying effects are confined to the acidic range (pH 4 to 6). Copyright 1994, 1999 Academic Press
