Elastomeric encapsulation layers are widely used in soft, wearable devices to physically isolate rigid electronic components from external environmental stimuli (e.g., stress) and facilitate device sterilization for reusability. In devices experiencing large deformations, the stress-isolation effect of the top encapsulation layer can eliminate the damage to the electronic components caused by external forces. However, for health monitoring and sensing applications, the strain-isolation effect of the bottom encapsulation layer can partially block the physiological signals of interest and degrade the measurement accuracy. Here, an analytic model is developed for the strain- and stress-isolation effects present in wearable devices with elastomeric encapsulation layers. The soft, elastomeric encapsulation layers and main electronic components layer are modeled as transversely isotropic-elastic mediums and the strain- and stress-isolation effects are described using isolation indexes. The analysis and results show that the isolation effects strongly depend on the thickness, density, and elastic modulus of both the elastomeric encapsulation layers and the main electronic component layer. These findings, combined with the flexible mechanics design strategies of wearable devices, provide new design guidelines for future wearable devices to protect them from external forces while capturing the relevant physiological signals underneath the skin.

Realizing fully stretchable electronic materials is central to advancing new types of mechanically agile and skin-integrable optoelectronic device technologies. Here we demonstrate a materials design concept combining an organic semiconductor film with a honeycomb porous structure with biaxially prestretched platform that enables high-performance organic electrochemical transistors with a charge transport stability over 30–140% tensional strain, limited only by metal contact fatigue. The prestretched honeycomb semiconductor channel of donor–acceptor polymer poly(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-diketo-pyrrolopyrrole-alt-2,5-bis(3-triethyleneglycoloxy-thiophen-2-yl) exhibits high ion uptake and completely stable electrochemical and mechanical properties over 1,500 redox cycles with 104stretching cycles under 30% strain. Invariant electrocardiogram recording cycles and synapse responses under varying strains, along with mechanical finite element analysis, underscore that the present stretchable organic electrochemical transistor design strategy is suitable for diverse applications requiring stable signal output under deformation with low power dissipation and mechanical robustness.

Wireless battery-free optogenetic devices enable behavioral neuroscience studies in groups of animals with minimal interference to natural behavior. Real-time independent control of optogenetic stimulation through near-field communication dramatically expands the realm of applications of these devices in broad contexts of neuroscience research. Dissemination of these tools with advanced functionalities to the neuroscience community requires protocols for device manufacturing and experimental implementation. This protocol describes detailed procedures for fabrication, encapsulation and implantation of recently developed advanced wireless devices in head- and back-mounted forms. In addition, procedures for standard implementation of experimental systems in mice are provided. This protocol aims to facilitate the application of wireless optogenetic devices in advanced optogenetic experiments involving groups of freely moving rodents and complex environmental designs. The entire protocol lasts ~3–5 weeks.

Flexible electronic/optoelectronic systems that can intimately integrate onto the surfaces of vital organ systems have the potential to offer revolutionary diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities relevant to a wide spectrum of diseases and disorders. The critical interfaces between such technologies and living tissues must provide soft mechanical coupling and efficient optical/electrical/chemical exchange. Here, we introduce a functional adhesive bioelectronic–tissue interface material, in the forms of mechanically compliant, electrically conductive, and optically transparent encapsulating coatings, interfacial layers or supporting matrices. These materials strongly bond both to the surfaces of the devices and to those of different internal organs, with stable adhesion for several days to months, in chemistries that can be tailored to bioresorb at controlled rates. Experimental demonstrations in live animal models include device applications that range from battery-free optoelectronic systems for deep-brain optogenetics and subdermal phototherapy to wireless millimetre-scale pacemakers and flexible multielectrode epicardial arrays. These advances have immediate applicability across nearly all types of bioelectronic/optoelectronic system currently used in animal model studies, and they also have the potential for future treatment of life-threatening diseases and disorders in humans.

Large, distributed collections of miniaturized, wireless electronic devices1,2may form the basis of future systems for environmental monitoring3, population surveillance4, disease management5and other applications that demand coverage over expansive spatial scales. Aerial schemes to distribute the components for such networks are required, and—inspired by wind-dispersed seeds6—we examined passive structures designed for controlled, unpowered flight across natural environments or city settings. Techniques in mechanically guided assembly of three-dimensional (3D) mesostructures7–9provide access to miniature, 3D fliers optimized for such purposes, in processes that align with the most sophisticated production techniques for electronic, optoelectronic, microfluidic and microelectromechanical technologies. Here we demonstrate a range of 3D macro-, meso- and microscale fliers produced in this manner, including those that incorporate active electronic and colorimetric payloads. Analytical, computational and experimental studies of the aerodynamics of high-performance structures of this type establish a set of fundamental considerations in bio-inspired design, with a focus on 3D fliers that exhibit controlled rotational kinematics and low terminal velocities. An approach that represents these complex 3D structures as discrete numbers of blades captures the essential physics in simple, analytical scaling forms, validated by computational and experimental results. Battery-free, wireless devices and colorimetric sensors for environmental measurements provide simple examples of a wide spectrum of applications of these unusual concepts.

Advanced technologies for controlled delivery of light to targeted locations in biological tissues are essential to neuroscience research that applies optogenetics in animal models. Fully implantable, miniaturized devices with wireless control and power-harvesting strategies offer an appealing set of attributes in this context, particularly for studies that are incompatible with conventional fiber-optic approaches or battery-powered head stages. Limited programmable control and narrow options in illumination profiles constrain the use of existing devices. The results reported here overcome these drawbacks via two platforms, both with real-time user programmability over multiple independent light sources, in head-mounted and back-mounted designs. Engineering studies of the optoelectronic and thermal properties of these systems define their capabilities and key design considerations. Neuroscience applications demonstrate that induction of interbrain neuronal synchrony in the medial prefrontal cortex shapes social interaction within groups of mice, highlighting the power of real-time subject-specific programmability of the wireless optogenetic platforms introduced here.

The delicate serpentine structures are widely used in high-performance stretchable electronics over the past decade. The metal interconnects encapsulated in biocompatible polymer Parylene-C film is a superior choice for long-term implantation in vivo, especially as neural interface to acquire electrophysiological signals or apply electrical stimulation. To avoid the physical contact damages from the neural tissues such as the brain or peripheral nerves, serpentine interconnects are utilized as stretchable electrodes and usually bonded to the soft elastomer substrate. The adhesion strength between the serpentine interconnects and the elastomer substrate becomes a considerable issue to ensure reliability and structural integrity. In this paper, the stretchable Parylene-C electrodes can be transfer printed onto arbitrary elastomer substrates by a thin layer of silicone rubber adhesive with low modulus for electrocorticogram (ECoG) recording. Mechanical simulation of serpentine structures consisting of same periodic arcs and different straight segments is investigated by uniaxial stretching. Then, the elastic stretchability of serpentine electrodes is further studied by simulation and experiments. After 5000 repetitive stretching cycles, the electrochemical impedance of microelectrodes remains in steady states. These results prove that the silicone rubber adhesive facilitates the interfacial bonding in the structure of stretchable electrodes as the compliant and reliable neural interface.

Standard clinical care in neonatal and pediatric intensive-care units (NICUs and PICUs, respectively) involves continuous monitoring of vital signs with hard-wired devices that adhere to the skin and, in certain instances, can involve catheter-based pressure sensors inserted into the arteries. These systems entail risks of causing iatrogenic skin injuries, complicating clinical care and impeding skin-to-skin contact between parent and child. Here we present a wireless, non-invasive technology that not only offers measurement equivalency to existing clinical standards for heart rate, respiration rate, temperature and blood oxygenation, but also provides a range of important additional features, as supported by data from pilot clinical studies in both the NICU and PICU. These new modalities include tracking movements and body orientation, quantifying the physiological benefits of skin-to-skin care, capturing acoustic signatures of cardiac activity, recording vocal biomarkers associated with tonality and temporal characteristics of crying and monitoring a reliable surrogate for systolic blood pressure. These platforms have the potential to substantially enhance the quality of neonatal and pediatric critical care.

Traditional technologies for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) create human experiences through visual and auditory stimuli that replicate sensations associated with the physical world. The most widespread VR and AR systems use head-mounted displays, accelerometers and loudspeakers as the basis for three-dimensional, computer-generated environments that can exist in isolation or as overlays on actual scenery. In comparison to the eyes and the ears, the skin is a relatively underexplored sensory interface for VR and AR technology that could, nevertheless, greatly enhance experiences at a qualitative level, with direct relevance in areas such as communications, entertainment and medicine1,2. Here we present a wireless, battery-free platform of electronic systems and haptic (that is, touch-based) interfaces capable of softly laminating onto the curved surfaces of the skin to communicate information via spatio-temporally programmable patterns of localized mechanical vibrations. We describe the materials, device structures, power delivery strategies and communication schemes that serve as the foundations for such platforms. The resulting technology creates many opportunities for use where the skin provides an electronically programmable communication and sensory input channel to the body, as demonstrated through applications in social media and personal engagement, prosthetic control and feedback, and gaming and entertainment.

The chemistry that governs the dissolution of device-grade, monocrystalline silicon nanomembranes into benign end products by hydrolysis serves as the foundation for fully eco/biodegradable classes of high-performance electronics. This paper examines these processes in aqueous solutions with chemical compositions relevant to groundwater and biofluids. The results show that the presence of Si(OH)4and proteins in these solutions can slow the rates of dissolution and that ion-specific effects associated with Ca2+can significantly increase these rates. This information allows for effective use of silicon nanomembranes not only as active layers in eco/biodegradable electronics but also as water barriers capable of providing perfect encapsulation until their disappearance by dissolution. The time scales for this encapsulation can be controlled by introduction of dopants into the Si and by addition of oxide layers on the exposed surfaces.The former possibility also allows the doped silicon to serve as an electrical interface for measuring biopotentials, as demonstrated in fully bioresorbable platforms for in vivoneural recordings. This collection of findings is important for further engineering development of water-soluble classes of silicon electronics.

Sensors that reproduce the complex characteristics of cutaneous receptors in the skin have important potential in the context of artificial systems for controlled interactions with the physical environment. Multimodal responses with high sensitivity and wide dynamic range are essential for many such applications. This report introduces a simple, three-dimensional type of microelectromechanical sensor that incorporates monocrystalline silicon nanomembranes as piezoresistive elements in a configuration that enables separate, simultaneous measurements of multiple mechanical stimuli, such as normal force, shear force, and bending, along with temperature. The technology provides high sensitivity measurements with millisecond response times, as supported by quantitative simulations. The fabrication and assembly processes allow scalable production of interconnected arrays of such devices with capabilities in spatiotemporal mapping. Integration with wireless data recording and transmission electronics allows operation with standard consumer devices.

Development of schemes to form complex three-dimensional (3D) mesostructures in functional materials is a topic of broad interest, thanks to the ubiquitous applications across a diversity of technologies. Recently established schemes in the mechanically guided 3D assembly allow deterministic transformation of two-dimensional structures into sophisticated 3D architectures by controlled compressive buckling resulted from strain release of prestretched elastomer substrates. Existing studies mostly exploited supporting substrates made of homogeneous elastomeric material with uniform thickness, which produces relatively uniform strain field to drive the 3D assembly, thus posing limitations to the geometric diversity of resultant 3D mesostructures. To offer nonuniform strains with desired spatial distributions in the 3D assembly, this paper introduces a versatile set of concepts in the design of engineered substrates with heterogeneous integration of materials of different moduli. Such heterogeneous, deformable substrates can achieve large strain gradients and efficient strain isolation/magnification, which are difficult to realize using the previously reported strategies. Theoretical and experimental studies on the underlying mechanics offer a viable route to the design of heterogeneous, deformable substrates to yield favorable strain fields. A broad collection of 3D mesostructures and associated heterogeneous substrates is fabricated and demonstrated, including examples that resemble windmills, scorpions, and manta rays and those that have application potentials in tunable inductors and vibrational microsystems.

Vibrational resonances of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) can serve as means for assessing physical properties of ultrathin coatings in sensors and analytical platforms. Most such technologies exist in largely two-dimensional configurations with a limited total number of accessible vibration modes and modal displacements, thereby placing constraints on design options and operational capabilities. This study presents a set of concepts in three-dimensional (3D) microscale platforms with vibrational resonances excited by Lorentz-force actuation for purposes of measuring properties of thin-film coatings. Nanoscale films including photodefinable epoxy, cresol novolak resin, and polymer brush with thicknesses as small as 270 nm serve as the test vehicles for demonstrating the advantages of these 3D MEMS for detection of multiple physical properties, such as modulus and density, within a single polymer sample. The stability and reusability of the structure are demonstrated through multiple measurements of polymer samples using a single platform, and viaintegration with thermal actuators, the temperature-dependent physical properties of polymer films are assessed. Numerical modeling also suggests the potential for characterization of anisotropic mechanical properties in single or multilayer films. The findings establish unusual opportunities for interrogation of the physical properties of polymers through advanced MEMS design.

Peripheral nerve injuries represent a significant problem in public health, constituting 2–5% of all trauma cases1. For severe nerve injuries, even advanced forms of clinical intervention often lead to incomplete and unsatisfactory motor and/or sensory function2. Numerous studies report the potential of pharmacological approaches (for example, growth factors, immunosuppressants) to accelerate and enhance nerve regeneration in rodent models3–10. Unfortunately, few have had a positive impact in clinical practice. Direct intraoperative electrical stimulation of injured nerve tissue proximal to the site of repair has been demonstrated to enhance and accelerate functional recovery11,12, suggesting a novel nonpharmacological, bioelectric form of therapy that could complement existing surgical approaches. A significant limitation of this technique is that existing protocols are constrained to intraoperative use and limited therapeutic benefits13. Herein we introduce (i) a platform for wireless, programmable electrical peripheral nerve stimulation, built with a collection of circuit elements and substrates that are entirely bioresorbable and biocompatible, and (ii) the first reported demonstration of enhanced neuroregeneration and functional recovery in rodent models as a result of multiple episodes of electrical stimulation of injured nervous tissue.

Noninvasive methods for precise characterization of the thermal properties of soft biological tissues such as the skin can yield vital details about physiological health status including at critical intervals during recovery following skin injury. Here, we introduce quantitative measurement and characterization methods that allow rapid, accurate determination of the thermal conductivity of soft materials using thin, skin-like resistive sensor platforms. Systematic evaluations of skin at eight different locations and of six different synthetic skin-mimicking materials across sensor sizes, measurement times, and surface geometries (planar, highly curvilinear) validate simple scaling laws for data interpretation and parameter extraction. As an example of the possibilities, changes in the thermal properties of skin (volar forearm) can be monitored during recovery from exposure to ultraviolet radiation (sunburn) and to stressors associated with localized heating and cooling. More generally, the results described here facilitate rapid, non-invasive thermal measurements on broad classes of biological and non-biological soft materials.

Recently developed approaches in deterministic assembly allow for controlled, geometric transformation of two-dimensional structures into complex, engineered three-dimensional layouts. Attractive features include applicability to wide ranging layout designs and dimensions along with the capacity to integrate planar thin film materials and device layouts. The work reported here establishes further capabilities for directly embedding high-performance electronic devices into the resultant 3D constructs based on silicon nanomembranes (Si NMs) as the active materials in custom devices or microscale components released from commercial wafer sources. Systematic experimental studies and theoretical analysis illustrate the key ideas through varied 3D architectures, from interconnected bridges and coils to extended chiral structures, each of which embed n-channel Si NM MOSFETs (nMOS), Si NM diodes, and p-channel silicon MOSFETs (pMOS). Examples in stretchable/deformable systems highlight additional features of these platforms. These strategies are immediately applicable to other wide-ranging classes of materials and device technologies that can be rendered in two-dimensional layouts, from systems for energy storage, to photovoltaics, optoelectronics, and others.

Flexible electronic systems for bioimplants that offer long-term (multidecade) stability and safety in operation require thin, biocompatible layers that can prevent biofluid penetration. Recent work shows that ultrathin films of silicon dioxide thermally grown (TG-SiO2) on device-grade silicon wafers and then released as transferrable barriers offer a remarkable set of attributes in this context. This paper examines the chemical stability of these materials in aqueous solutions with different combinations of chemistries that are present in biofluids. Systematic measurements reveal the dependence of the dissolution rate of TG-SiO2on concentrations of cations (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) and anions (Cl–, HPO42–) at near-neutral pH. Certain results are consistent with previous studies on bulk samples of quartz and nanoparticles of amorphous silica; others reveal significant catalyzing effects associated with divalent cations at high pH and with specific anions at high ionic strength. In particular, Ca2+and HPO42–greatly enhance and silicic acid greatly reduces the rates. These findings establish foundational data of relevance to predicting lifetimes of implantable devices that use TG-SiO2as biofluid barriers, and of other classes of systems, such as environmental monitors, where encapsulation against water penetration is important.

Brittle coatings, upon sufficiently high indentation load, tend to fracture through either ring cracking or radial cracking. In this paper, we systematically study the factors determining the fracture modes of bilayer material under indentation. By analyzing the stress field developed in a coating/substrate bilayer under indentation in combination with the application of the maximum-tensile-stress fracture criterion, we show that the fracture mode of brittle coatings due to indentation is determined synergistically by two dimensionless parameters being functions of the mechanical properties of coating and substrate, coating thickness and indenter tip radius. Such dependence can be graphically depicted by a diagram called ‘fracture-mode map’, whereby the fracture modes can be directly predicated based on these two dimensionless parameters. Experimental verification of the fracture-mode map is carried out by examining the fracture modes of fused quartz/cement bilayer materials under indentation. The experimental observation exhibits good agreement with the prediction by the fracture-mode map. Our finding in this paper may not only shed light on the mechanics accounting for the fracture modes of brittle coatings in bilayer structures but also pave a new avenue to combating catastrophic damage through fracture mode control. A new algorithm is developed based on the parametric variational principle for elastic-plastic analysis of Cosserat continuum. The governing equations of the classic elastic-plastic problem are regularized by adding rotational degrees of freedom to the conventional translational degrees of freedom in conventional continuum mechanics. The parametric potential energy principle of the Cosserat theory is developed, from which the finite element formulation of the Cosserat theory and the corresponding parametric quadratic programming model are constructed. Strain localization problems are computed and the mesh independent results are obtained.

Recent advances in flexible electronics have brought great promotions to the next generation of wearable devices, like electronic skin (E-skin). Nevertheless, the powering issue still limits the size, weight and cost for E-skin. Here, trampoline inspired mechanics design and processing techniques in epidermal electronics are combined together to develop a thin, soft, stretchable self-powered tactile sensors based on triboelectric effect for E-skin. With the assistance of microstructure modifying by sandpapers, the TENG sensor exhibits great improved electrical performance and capable of distinguishing a broad range of pressure, with a great sensitivity of 0.367 mV Pa−1. The resulted TENG sensor exhibits excellent stretchability and sensing stability with accurate unchanged signal outputs even under a high-level strain up to 35%. Demonstrations of the sensors associating with the integration with a glove for human-machine interfaces and the development of a 4 × 4 tactile array for pressure mapping and recognition of contact objects, offers great opportunity for next generation self-powered E-skin.

Wireless, soft sensors continuously monitor pressure and temperature at the interface between a residual limb and a prosthesis.

Mechanics designs in wearable skin-integrated electronics, also known as epidermal electronics, play an important role in the device performance ranging from flexibility, to robusticity, and to the overall electrical performance. Compared with conventional wearable electronics, self-powered electronics that converting mechanical energy to electricity by using the activities from body's daily motions offers advantages of simple device structures and battery-free characteristics. Here we study a class of mechanics designs that associate with effective working area for stretchable epidermal triboelectric nanogenerators (e-TENGs), and report the relationships between effective working area and the electrical performance of e-TENGs. With the advanced cobweb-serpentine pattern mechanics design, a simple structured, low-cost single-electrode mode e-TENG with open-circuit voltage of ~60 V and a short circuit current output of ~20 μA was achieved. Moreover, the e-TENG's performance is very stable under a broad range of strain values from 0% to 30%. The report of mechanics designs-performance relationships shows a trade-off behavior between the stretchability and the effective working area, which significantly enhances our understanding of mechanics designs for e-TENGs.

Battery-free, soft, skin-mounted wireless sensors enable continuous, full-body spatiotemporal mapping of pressure and temperature on human subjects.

This paper introduces a liquid-metal integrated system that combines soft electronics materials and engineering designs with advanced near-field-communication (NFC) functionality for human motion sensing. All of the active components, that is, strain sensor, antenna and interconnections, in this device are made of liquid metal, and the device has unique gel-like characteristics and stretchability. Patterning procedures based on selective wetting properties of the reduced GaInSn enable a skin-attachable, miniaturized layout, in which the diameter of the device is less than 2 cm. Electromechanical characterization of the strain sensor and antenna reveals their behaviors under large uniaxial tensile and compressive strains, as well as more complex modes of deformation. Demonstrations of these devices involve their use in monitoring various human motions in a purely wireless fashion; examples include wrist flexion, movements of the vocal cord and finger motion. This simple platform has potential for use in human–machine interfaces for prosthetic control and other applications.

Many classes of flexible and stretchable bio-integrated electronic systems rely on mechanically sensitive electromagnetic components, such as various forms of antennas for wireless communication and for harvesting energy through coupling with external power sources. This efficient wireless functionality can be important for body area network technologies and can enable operation without the weight and bulky size of batteries for power supply. Recently, antenna designs have received increased attention because their mechanical and electromagnetic properties significantly influence the wireless performance of bio-integrated electronics, particularly under excessive mechanical loads. These mechanical factors are critical for skin-integrated electronics during human motion, as complex skin deformations can damage the conductive traces of antennas, such as those used for near-field communication (NFC), leading to yield or fracture and affecting their electromagnetic stability. Serpentine interconnects have been proposed as a geometric alternative to in-plane circular or rectangular spiral antenna designs to improve the elastic stretchability of the metallic traces in NFC antennas and prevent mechanical fractures. Despite the use of serpentine interconnects within the physiologically relevant strain range for skin (<20 %), the electromagnetic stability of the antennas decreases. This instability, reflected by shifts in resonance frequency and scattering parameters due to inductance changes, reduces the antennas' wireless power transfer efficiency and readout range. Therefore, maintaining the electromagnetic stability of antennas, specifically NFC antennas, under various mechanical deformations has become a critical challenge in practical wireless skin-integrated applications, such as sensing and physiological monitoring. Here, we establish a new mechanics and electromagnetic scaling law that quantifies the inductance changes under strain in a rectangular-loop serpentine structure typically used for NFC wireless communication in stretchable electronics. We present a systematic analysis of the antenna's geometric parameters, material properties of the antenna and substrate, and the applied strain on the inductance change. Our findings demonstrate that the relative change of inductance is solely influenced by the serpentine structure's width-radius ratio, arc angle, aspect ratio of the NFC antennas, and the applied strain. Additionally, under physiological strain conditions for the skin, the relative change of inductance can be minimized to preserve the NFC antenna's performance and prevent mechanical fracture and electromagnetic stability loss. • Mechanics and thermal analyses to predict localized thermal cooling in deformed tissue using controlled liquid vaporization in microchannel viscous flow. • Scaling law provides a concise formula, accounting for mechanics and thermal parameters, to predict the thermal and influent fluid and gas properties and achieve precise temperature cooling in bioelectronic applications. • Design and optimization guidelines using concise non-dimensional formulae for soft deformable bioelectronic systems with targeted microfluidic devices using liquid vaporization phase transitions. Recent advances in microelectronics and biomedical technology has led to capabilities for integrating programmable cooling mechanisms into bioelectronic devices for pain management and other important applications in human health. However, achieving localized and precise targeted cooling remains a challenge due to the influence of tissue mechanics during device placement/operation, viscous effects in the flow of coolants, and critical physical parameters that locally affect tissue temperature and mechanical responses. Recent studies demonstrate that bioelectronic devices can be equipped with microfluidic structures designed to support phase-change cooling mechanisms, with cooling power adjustable by control of fluid flow rates. When operated in closed-loop feedback schemes based on measurements of temperature at the tissue interface, these platforms can achieve precise temperature control of regions of peripheral nerves involved in pain signaling. Establishing a theoretical model to understand the effects of these devices on the underlying soft and deformable tissues, along with microfluidic deformations that can alter the heat transfer cooling process in viscous flow, is critical for optimized design and operation. To address this, a theoretical model is developed to describe the influence of remote strain in the tissue and to quantify the spatial temperature distribution of tissue cooled by fluid phase change in deformable microfluidic channels. A scaling law is derived to quantify the steady-state temperature distribution in the tissue under physiologically relevant mechanical loads, fluid viscosity, flow rates, and thermal conductivities, enabling the prediction of liquid and gas flux based on expected temperature changes and saturated vapor pressure in the deformed tissue and microchannel. These findings reveal that within a reasonable physiological range, the influence of fluid viscosity on temperature changes can be neglected, and the ratio of fluid to tissue thermal conductivity minimally impacts the temperature change at relatively high flow rates. Additionally, the model suggests a limit to tissue cooling for a given fluid, which may not necessarily increase with higher fluid volumes. [Display omitted] [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
