The increased use of internal cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) combined with the large number of Americans who drive poses serious ethical, legal and social considerations. Although ICD patients are advised not to drive, nearly 77% of patients surveyed continued to drive after surgery. Questions of freedom and quality-of-life needs should be measured against the risk factors to others as well as the legal restrictions applied to cardiac patients.

Research on the effect of arrests or convictions on college admissions decisions, while limited, suggests that college admission is a major hurdle for applicants with criminal histories. The purpose of this study was to examine admission application policies and practices at undergraduate social work programs in the South for justice-involved individuals or persons with criminal backgrounds. The qualitative study design recruited program directors through professional relationships for interviews and selected programs in urban cities in the South using the Council on Social Work Education’s Accredited Program Directory. The surveys consisted of three questions and the interviews consisted of eleven semi-structured questions focusing on the policies and practices associated with the application process. Study results reveal that slightly more than one half of all programs asked questions about criminal backgrounds, firm policies are not in place, and practices vary from institution to institution.

ABSTRACTThis article examines how structural racism amplified the direct and indirect effects of COVID-19 for African American, Asian/Asian American, and Latino/a/x and Hispanic social work students during the unplanned transition to synchronous and asynchronous education at three social work programs across the United States, creating additional educational barriers. The aim of the article is threefold. First, centering critical race theory, it discusses the experience of African Americans, Asian/Asian Americans, and Latino/a/x and Hispanic students at three different institutions across the country. Second, it highlights the structural challenges faced by social work students of historically, racially, and ethnically oppressed communities and the lessons learned from the social work programs’ pandemic response. Study Objectives. To determine if α1‐acid glycoprotein (AAG) concentrations are altered in patients with atrial fibrillation and flutter (AFF), and to establish if fluctuations in AAG change the free fraction of quinidine.

OBJECTIVE: To report a suicide attempt with an aspirin enema.CASE SUMMARY: A patient presented to the emergency room after self-administering, in enema form, approximately 700 aspirin tablets dissolved in water. Over the next 12hours the patient became progressively acidemic with eventual cardiac arrest and subsequent chronic hypoxic encephalopathy.DISCUSSION: This patient's poor outcome was the result of retained aspirin products in the rectal vault combined with the failure to recognize the delayed absorption properties of rectally administered aspirin.CONCLUSIONS: In rectal aspirin overdoses, aspirin absorption from the rectum may occur over a long period of time. It is important to remove as much aspirin from the rectum as possible and to closely monitor these patients so that appropriate therapy may be started quickly. Activated charcoal given both in enema and oral form may help decrease aspirin absorption. Hemodialysis should be available and performed without delay should the patient require it.

The author comments on the literature and moral growth in children. To prepare children to think critically about ethical concerns, schools should emphasize the thoughtful reading of children's literature. It is observed that most schools already possess a balanced library of well-written children's books and librarians can aid teachers and students with selection of appropriate texts. Research has shown the effectiveness of using literature and structured discussions of moral dilemmas to stimulate the growth of children's moral judgment.
