In this study, Bi2O3-OV with different concentrations of oxygen vacancies was prepared by reduction method, Ag NPs were loaded onto pure Bi2O3and Bi2O3-OV by photodeposition. The effect of different electronic structures of the carrier on the performance and reaction mechanism of the Ag-loaded catalysts was also emphasized. The results showed that the sterilization rate of pure Bi2O3was only 49.56% after half an hour of light exposure, the sterilization rate of Ag/Bi2O3composite catalyst without vacancies was as high as 76.17%, and the sterilization efficiency of Ag/Bi2O3composite catalyst with oxygen vacancies was up to 98.21%. The presence of vacancies caused the Ag/Bi2O3composite catalyst to produce 15.13 μM H2O2, which was nearly twice as much as that of Bi2O3/0.5Ag, and was the main active species for sterilization, while the main active species for sterilization of the Ag/Bi2O3composite catalyst without vacancies was the hydroxyl radicals generated from the valence band. This work not only enriches the study of the mechanism of inactivation of marine microorganisms by silver-loaded photocatalysts, but also provides a theoretical basis for the advancement of marine pollution treatment technology.

In this paper, ZnWO4photocatalysts were prepared by hydrothermal method, after which IrO2was loaded on ZnWO4by photodeposition to synthesize IrO2/ZnWO4composite photocatalysts. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The photocatalytic activity was investigated by inactivating bacteria in natural seawater. The effect of varying the deposition amount of IrO2on the photocatalytic activity was investigated. The mechanism of IrO2modification to enhance the sterilization of ZnWO4was as follows: first, IrO2modification significantly enhanced the effective chlorine yield of the samples. Second, IrO2modification also promoted the charge separation efficiency of the samples. The present work confirms that photocatalytic production of effective chlorine is an important active species for sterilization in seawater systems, which provides a new idea for photocatalytic purification technology in seawater medium.

Personalized news recommendation is an important technology to help users obtain news information they are interested in and alleviate information overload. In recent years, news recommendation has been increasingly widely studied and has achieved remarkable success in improving the news reading experience of users. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of personalized news recommendation approaches. Firstly, we introduce personalized news recommendation systems according to different needs and analyze the characteristics. And then, a three-part research framework on personalized news recommendation is put forward. Based on the framework, the knowledge and methods involved in each part are analyzed in detail, including news datasets and processing techniques, prediction models, news ranking and display. On this basis, we focus on news recommendation methods based on different types of graph structure learning, including user–news interaction graph, knowledge graph and social relationship graph. Lastly, the challenges of the current news recommendation are analyzed and the prospect of the future research direction is presented.

Objective This study was performed to document the clinical and radiographic results of consecutive patients with Crowe IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) treated by cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) using an S-ROM femoral component with shortening derotational subtrochanteric osteotomy.Methods Twenty-three hips of 21 patients with Crowe IV DDH were treated by cementless THA combined with shortening derotational subtrochanteric osteotomy from January 2005 to January 2011. The mean preoperative modified Harris hip score (mHHS) and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) activity score were 40.7 and 4.2, respectively.Results The mean follow-up was 105 months. The mean mHHS and UCLA score improved to 87.0 and 9.1, respectively, at the latest follow-up. Nine of the 23 hips had a negative Trendelenburg sign. One of the 23 hips was outside the Lewinnek acetabular cup inclination safe range, and 3 of the 23 hips were outside the Lewinnek acetabular cup anteversion safe range. The probability of prosthesis survival was 100% at 5 years and 91.3% at 10 years.Conclusion Patients with Crowe IV DDH can be treated by cementless THA combined with shortening derotational subtrochanteric osteotomy. This method can greatly improve hip joint function and relieve pain without significant complications.

The aim of this study is to investigate the role of tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) in apoptosis and autophagy of mouse osteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells, as well as the crosstalk between autophagy and apoptosis. Mouse osteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured in vitro and treated with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), rapamycin, 3-methyl adenine (3-MA) and TNF-a either alone or in combination, respectively. MTT assays were used to monitor the cell viability upon different treatments. Annexin-V-FITC/propidium iodide (PI) staining was used to detect the apoptotic rate of osteoblasts. Autophagic structure and apoptotic bodies were visualized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Western blot analysis was performed to detect the autophagic marker LC3-II/I, p62 and apoptotic marker cleaved caspase-3. TNF-a inhibits MC3T3-E1 cell viability in a dose-dependent and time-dependent manner. Annexin-V-FITC/PI staining, coupled with TEM, showed that TNF-a induced cell apoptosis and autophagy in MC3T3-E1 cells. The autophagy inducer rapamycin ameliorated TNF-a-induced apoptosis. In contrast, 3-MA, which is an autophagy inhibitor, caused an exaggerated induction of TNF-a-induced apoptosis. TNF-a upregulated autophagy marker LC3-II/I, but downregulated p62 in osteoblasts. Combined treatment of rapamycin and TNF-a further exaggerated this effect, whereas co-treatment of 3-MA and TNF-a decreased LC3-II/I, but increased p62 compared with TNF-a alone. In addition, TNF-a caused an induction of apoptotic marker cleaved caspase-3. TNF-a-mediated induction of cleaved caspase-3 was downregulated by rapamycin, but upregulated by 3-MA, respectively. TNF-a induced both autophagy and apoptosis in osteoblasts, and upregulated autophagy protects the cell by reducing TNF-a-induced apoptosis.

Osteosarcoma is one of the most prevalent primary bone tumors. The pathogenesis and molecular development of this tumor remains elusive. The prognosis is unfavorable due to lack of effective treatment methods. Recent advances in the epigenetics have brought a profound impact on the understanding of molecular mechanisms that lead to osteosarcoma. In this review, we summarized the current literature on epigenetic changes that are thought to contribute to the carcinogenesis of osteosarcoma, and discussed the potential diagnostic and therapeutic applications as well as future areas of research.

Over the past decades, circular RNAs (circRNAs) have emerged as a hot spot and sparked intensive interest. Initially considered as the transcriptional noises, further studies have indicated that circRNAs are crucial regulators in multiple cellular biological processes, and thus engage in the development and progression of many diseases including osteoarthritis (OA). OA is a prevalent disease that mainly affects those aging, obese and post-traumatic population, posing as a major source of socioeconomic burden. Recently, numerous circRNAs have been found aberrantly expressed in OA tissues compared with counterparts. More importantly, circRNAs have been demonstrated to interplay with components in OA microenvironments, such as chondrocytes, synoviocytes and macrophages, by regulation of their proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, inflammation, or extracellular matrix reorganization. Herein, in this review, we extensively summarize the roles of circRNAs in OA microenvironment, progression, and putative treatment, as well as envision the future directions for circRNAs research in OA, with the aim to provide a novel insight into this field.

Objectives This study examines plasma interleukin 33 (IL-33) levels in patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) and explores the possible use of IL-33 as a marker for early diagnosis and progression of ONFH.Methods One hundred twenty-five ONFH patients and 126 control subjects were recruited for this study. The plasma IL-33 levels were measured using a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Effects of disease stage and risk factors on IL-33 level were also assessed.Results Plasma IL-33 levels were significantly higher in the 125 ONFH patients (174.33 [SD, 65.73] pg/mL) than in the 126 control subjects (90.50 [SD, 25.17] pg/mL, P< 0.001). Plasma IL-33 levels were significantly higher in patients with stage III/IV ONFH (184.17 [SD, 43.75] pg/mL) than in patients with stage I/II ONFH (158.24 [SD, 50.11] pg/mL, P< 0.001). There was no significant difference in IL-33 levels between alcohol-induced, idiopathic, and steroid-induced cases.Conclusions Plasma IL-33 may be an alarmin for ONFH, and its levels may be related to disease progression.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors with high incidence, rapid progress, and high mortality. There are still some defects in the treatments of OSCC, which seriously affect the quality of patients’ life. Therefore, it is urgent to find a safer and more effective treatment for OSCC. Low molecular weight fucoidan (LMWF) has various biological activities, such as antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic, and has no obvious side effects, but the effect of LMWF on OSCC has not been reported. In this study, the effects of LMWF on dysplastic oral keratinocyte (DOK) and OSCC cells SCC-9 and SCC-25 were detected by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, flow cytometry, TUNEL, colony formation, and wound healing assay, and the expression levels of Notch-1 and Jagged-1 treated with LMWF were detected by RT-qPCR. The results showed that LMWF could inhibit the proliferation and migration of DOK and SCC-9, and promote apoptosis. Low molecular weight fucoidan upregulated the expression of Notch-1 and Jagged-1 in DOK and SCC-9 cells. It indicated that LMWF might promote the apoptosis of DOK and SCC-9 by upregulating the Notch signal pathway, thereby inhibiting cell proliferation and playing an antitumor role. It provided theoretical basis to develop LMWF as a novel therapeutic drug for oral cancer.

Hoffa fracture combined with tibial shaft fracture and multiple ligament avulsion injuries is extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of medial Hoffa fracture with associated fracture of tibial shaft and avulsion fractures of multiple ligaments secondary to knee dislocation. A 17-year-old female with history of a motorcycle accident was referred to our hospital after knee joint reduction at a regional trauma center. Preoperative radiology revealed a medial Hoffa fracture associated with tibial shaft fracture, inferior pole patellar fracture, fibular head fracture and multiple ligament avulsion fractures including anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament. A less invasive approach via arthroscopy-assisted technique and minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) technique was used for fracture reduction and fixation. Six months postoperatively, the patient had arthrofibrosis and adhesiolysis under arthroscopy was performed. At the last follow-up of 24 months, the patient regained knee full range of motion and returned to pre-injury level of activities. Although minimally invasive techniques were used to speed recovery, the orthopaedic surgeon should still be aware of the possibility of postoperative arthrofibrosis as multiple site fractures may need longer immobilization.
