This paper investigates the effect of polarization directions on underwater femtosecond laser machining of silicon wafer. Firstly, laser ablation in liquids produces laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on both edges of the groove. The direction of LIPSS has direct correlation with the polarization of the laser beam. Secondly, the electric field intensity distribution within the groove is analyzed by numerical simulation employing the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) method. The simulation and experimental results reveal that the distribution of the inter electric field intensity within the grooves varies with polarization direction. As the angle between the polarization and scanning directions decreases, the peak electric field strength and groove depth gradually increase. Finally, changing the direction of polarization of the beam affects the symmetry of the groove profile. The groove profile produced by ablation is symmetrical when the beam polarization direction is parallel to the scanning direction. By modulating and optimizing the direction of polarization, grooves with large depth and symmetrical shape can be obtained.

To investigate the dynamic characteristics and long-term dynamic stability of the new subgrade structure of medium–low-speed (MLS) maglevs, cyclic vibration tests were performed under natural and rainfall conditions, and the dynamic response of the subgrade structure was monitored. The dynamic response attenuation characteristics along the depth direction of the subgrade were compared, and the distribution characteristics of the dynamic stress on the surface of the subgrade along the longitudinal direction of the line were analyzed. The critical dynamic stress and cumulative deformation were used as indicators to evaluate the long-term dynamic stability of the subgrade. Results show that water has a certain effect on the dynamic characteristics of the subgrade, and the dynamic stress and acceleration increase with the water content. With the dowel steel structure set between the rail-bearing beams, stress concentration at the end of the loaded beam can be prevented, and the diffusion distance of the dynamic stress along the longitudinal direction increases. The dynamic stress measured in the subgrade bed range is less than 1/5 of the critical dynamic stress. The postconstruction settlement of the subgrade after similarity ratio conversion is 3.94 mm and 7.72 mm under natural and rainfall conditions, respectively, and both values are less than the 30 mm limit, indicating that the MLS maglev subgrade structure has good long-term dynamic stability.

As a kind of large-scale connectivity infrastructure, submarine cables play a vital role in international telecommunication, socio-economic development and national defense security. However, the current understanding about the spatial pattern of global submarine cable network is relatively limited. In this article, we analyze the spatial distribution and connectivity pattern of global submarine cables, and identify their strategic pivots and strategic channels. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The spatial distribution of global submarine cables is significantly unbalanced, which is characterized by the facts that the distribution of submarine cable lines is similar to that of sea lanes, and the agglomerations of landing stations are distributed unevenly along the coastline. (2) The connectivity pattern of global submarine cable network has a significant scale effect. At the micro, meso and macro scales, the connectivity structure presents chain model, cluster model and hub-and-spoke model, respectively. (3) The distribution of strategic pivots and strategic channels shows a pyramidal hierarchical feature. Singapore ranks highest among all the strategic pivots, while the Gulf of Aden and the Strait of Malacca rank highest among the strategic channels. Based on the identification of strategic pivots and channels, six strategic regions have been divided, which face various network security risks and need special attention and vigilance.

In this article, the effects and mechanism of how bubble behaviors would affect liquid-assisted femtosecond laser cutting of silicon wafer are investigated. There are two kinds of bubbles generated during laser ablation in liquids, including the cavitation bubbles and the persistent bubbles. First, evolutions of the laser-induced cavitation bubbles are recorded by time-resolved shadowgraph imaging. The maximum height of the cavitation bubbles is shown to be 42 μm at the pulse energy of 18.15 μJ. The cavitation bubbles are shown to cause the defocusing effect on subsequent pulses, resulting in non-uniform ablated microgrooves. To improve the microgrooves morphology, the time interval between adjacent pulses is adjusted on basis of lifetime of the cavitation bubbles. The defocusing effect becomes alleviative when the time interval exceeds 100 μs. Next, the persistent bubbles are induced after the collapse of the cavitation bubbles and whose behaviors are studied. The results show that drastic explosions occur once the laser interacts with the persistent bubbles covered on the microgroove, and cause detrimental effects on surface morphology. The ethanol solution is chosen to improve surface wettability on basis of the dwell property of the persistent bubbles. Finally, the shielding effect of the persistent bubbles for incoming laser pulses is studied, which shows a decrease in the microgroove depth by 53 % in the 2 wt% ethanol solution. This work illustrates how the bubbles affect the cutting of silicon wafer under liquid, and how uniform microgrooves with fine surface morphology are achieved by utilizing the bubble behaviors.

Submarine cable network is one of the most important connectivity infrastructures in the digital era. In the past 20 years, the submarine cable network of Chinese mainland has formed a complex connectivity structure. This paper focuses on exploring the structure and evolution of the submarine cable network of Chinese mainland. The results show that the evolution can be divided into four stages: an initial stage (1993–1998), a developmental stage (1999–2002), a stagnation stage (2003–2015) and an accelerated stage (2016–2018). The connectivity structure can be analyzed at micro, meso and macro scales. Statistically, the connectivity increased significantly overall, but showed significant differences in space. For the microscale, the landing cities were characterized by “extensive but low, exclusive and high”; for the mesoscale, the connectivity of countries or regions was characterized by “distance attenuation” as a whole, but, in part, by a “regional identity”; for the macroscale, intercontinental connectivity differences have been declining. The hierarchy has been upgraded from a “3 system” to a “2 + 3 system”. Finally, this paper discusses the interaction between submarine cable network construction and international relations, and puts forward policy suggestions for China’s submarine cable construction.

The hydroxyl radical (•OH) scavenging capacity is a useful parameter for the design and operation of an advanced oxidation process (AOP) in water treatment. The scavenging capacity may change with time, and it would be useful to continuously measure this change to be able to optimize AOP doses. In this study, we first reviewed current methods for scavenging capacity measurement to identify strengths and weaknesses of each method. This information helped guide the design of an external calibration method to allow straightforward laboratory and field measurement of •OH scavenging capacity. The method used low-pressure UV/H2O2as the •OH generation system, methylene blue (MB) as the probe compound, and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) as the standard. By monitoring, offline, the color decay of MB in a series of IPA solutions with different scavenging capacity, a calibration curve was established between the color decay rate and the scavenging capacity. The measured color decay in real water samples can then be used with this external calibration to estimate their scavenging capacity. Work was undertaken to ensure that the process would be robust under a wide range of water quality conditions. Parallel tests using this method compared with the benchmark methods confirmed its robustness and accuracy.

In concert with developments in global trade and energy resource transportation, there has been a marked increase in reliance on overseas shipping. Unimpeded marine transportation has therefore become a key issue which influences national maritime interests including the security of trade and energy resources. A strategic shipping pivot thus performs a vital controlling function for global shipping networks. In this study strategic shipping pivots are defined and subdivided into sea hubs, channels and areas. We then develop a model to identify strategic shipping pivots on a global scale. The results show that, depending on differences in location, function, and type, the concept of strategic shipping pivot permits the identification of both spatial and structural differentiation with respect to strategic hubs, corridors, and seas. Now 44 strategic hubs have formed across the globe. These hubs have become the control centers of local shipping network organization. At the same time, seven strategic corridors containing most shipping routes and transportation capacity connect important sea areas, and permit a high-degree of control over the transport of strategic materials. The strategic seas, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific provide vital import and export pathways, so that the formation of strategic shipping pivots is mainly influenced by factors such as physical geographical conditions, the spatial distribution of socio-economic activities, business organization, technical progress, geopolitical patterns and geopolitical disputes. Physical geographical conditions provide the potential foundations for strategic shipping pivots, while the spatial distribution of socio-economic activities and communications determine the strategic value of these points. Finally, business organization, technical progress, and geopolitical disputes all function to strengthen the strategic mechanisms and the mutagenicity of strategic shipping pivots.

Coal is a basic resource and its use guarantees the development of national economies and human society. Thus, coal transportation is an important part of China’s overall transportation system. In this system, ports are the vital transit nodes. This study considered coastal ports in China and analysed the evolution of coal transportation from 1973 to 2013. We focused on the spatial pattern of coal loading and unloading, and summarized the main characteristics and development of the processes. Then, we examined the volumes of coal transported and regional changes in these amounts using mathematical models and indicators. Finally, we analysed the specialized function and spatial differentiation of the ports involved in coal transportation to reveal their spatial relationship and temporal evolution. We found that the spatial pattern of coal transportation changed from “south input and north output” to “all input and north output”. However, the prominent ports used for coal unloading are still concentrated in areas south of the Yangtze River. Coal loading is concentrated on the west bank of Bohai Bay. In addition, some ports around Bohai Bay, such as Dandong, Dalian, Yantai, and Qingdao, changed from traditional coal loading ports to unloading ports. This study further developed the theory of transport geography, and improved our understanding of China’s coal transportation system.

Pilot-scale and lab-scale experiments were performed to evaluate the ability of granular activated carbon (GAC) to quench hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The GAC was harvested from 5 drinking water treatment plants and included two GACs that were specifically designed for this purpose (“catalytic”), and 3 that were used solely to adsorb taste and odour compounds (“normal”). All GACs indicated very little change in performance with time for GAC up to 9 years old (the oldest tested). Batch kinetic tests revealed that the catalytic GACs had a higher reaction rate with H2O2than the normal GACs, but under typical conditions (e.g.4+ minute EBCT) the difference may not be important in practice. The observed first order decomposition rate of H2O2increased linearly with the spherical surface area of the GAC particles, providing evidence that effectiveness is governed by particle size, implying that smaller GAC would be more effective for quenching H2O2.

The “High-Level Forum of the Development of China’s Human Geography Under the Background of Change” was held in Beijing on January 22-23, 2016. More than 30 professors attended this forum. At this conference, they discussed the major progress made towards developing China’s human geography, as well as the existing problems, limiting factors, opportunities, international collaborations, emerging directions, and prospects in the development of this discipline. In recent years human geography has boomed, generating many important opportunities for its development. Establishing an academic community for joint research on major research issues and collaborative innovation is a promising and important route to take. We should embrace both domestic and international characteristics, to promote China’s human geography onto the world stage. Meanwhile, the cultivation of various scholarly talents is also of great value to enrich and advance the discipline.

Bioretention is a popular best management practice of low impact development that effectively restores urban hydrologic characteristics to those of predevelopment and improves water quality prior to conveyance to surface waters. This is achieved by utilizing an engineered system containing a surface layer of mulch, a thick soil media often amended with a variety of materials to improve water quality, a variety of vegetation, and underdrains, depending on the surrounding soil characteristics. Bioretention systems have been studied quite extensively for warm climate applications, but data strongly supporting their long-term efficacy and application in cold climates is sparse. Although it is apparent that bioretention is an effective stormwater management system, its design in cold climate needs further research. Existing cold climate research has shown that coarser media is required to prevent concrete frost from forming. For spring, summer and fall seasons, if sufficient permeability exists to drain the system prior to freezing, peak flow and volume reduction can be maintained. Additionally, contaminants that are removed via filtration are also not impacted by cold climates. In contrary, dissolved contaminants, nutrients, and organics are significantly more variable in their ability to be removed or degraded via bioretention in colder temperatures.Winter road maintenance salts have been shown to negatively impact the removal of some contaminants and positively impact others, while their effects on properly selected vegetation or bacteria health are also not well understood. Research in these water quality aspects has been inconsistent and therefore requires further study.

As an important branch of human geography, transportation geography has experienced three periods of evolution: foundation, systematization, and rapid development of the discipline. It has gradually become a relatively mature discipline. During the period 1930–1980, the development of transportation geography consisted mainly of the publication of theoretical texts. During 1980–2000, it gradually became a systematic discipline. Since the start of the 21st century, transportation geography has focused mainly on exploring the impacts of transportation on socio-economic development. Currently, studies on transportation geography have led to significant developments in a number of areas, including transportation theory, facility distribution and planning, transportation flows and network analysis, evaluation of transport modes, transportation planning, and simulation and assessment of urban transportation. Such studies have also enriched human geography research, provided a wider geographical overview and elucidated the development mechanism of transportation, as well as helped to understand the impacts of transport development on socio-economic systems. Some findings obtained by geographers have been widely used in transportation geography and related fields, including the four basic laws of transportation generation, the hub–spoke mode of transport organization, the subordinating and guiding functions of transportation on socio-economic development, regional transport dominance measures, accessibility measures, and spatial organization of port systems.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to study the spatialtemporal differentiation of industrial eco-efficiency in China. Using methods based on the data envelopment analysis (DEA) model and exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) and data from 1985, 1995, 2005, and 2008 of 30 provinces in China, the spatial-temporal pattern changes in industrial eco-efficiency are discussed. The results show that: first, the patterns of industrial eco-efficiency are dominated by clustering of relatively low efficiency provinces; second, spatial relationships between the industrial eco-efficiencies of different provinces changed slightly throughout the period and the provinces persistently exhibit spatial concentration of relatively low industrial eco-efficiency; finally, there is an obvious trend in the polarization of industrial eco-efficiency, i.e., the higher level spatial units are concentrated in eastern China, and the lower level spatial units are mainly in western and central China.

Inherent drawbacks associated with drug-eluting stents have prompted the development of bioresorbable cardiovascular stents. Additive manufacturing (3-dimentional (3D) printing) has been widely applied in medical devices. In this study, we develop a novel screw extrusion-based 3D printing system with a new designed mini-screw extruder to fabricate stents. A stent with a zero Poisson’s ratio (ZPR) structure is designed, and a preliminary monofilament test is conducted to investigate appropriate fabrication parameters. 3D-printed stents with different geometric structures are fabricated and analyzed by observation of the surface morphology. An evaluation of the mechanical properties and a preliminary biological evaluation of 3D-printed stents with different parameters are carried out. In conclusion, the screw extrusion-based 3D printing system shows potential for customizable stent fabrication.

In this study, a picosecond (ps) laser was employed to produce micro-textures on ductile iron in linearly processing leading to significantly higher processing efficiency. The fabrication efficiency was increased about 1331 times as compared to the more common spot-by-spot texturing method. The ps laser induced graphene (LIG) structures were simultaneously fabricated in dimples, which further enhanced the surface tribological properties. The surface micro-textures were produced by forming micro-dimples on the substrate via the laser ablation process. The dimple diameter and area density were regulated by varying the key laser processing parameters, and were experimentally correlated to the tribological properties of the ductile iron substrate. To understand deeper into the wear reduction mechanism of the micro-dimples, simulation models based on the Reynold equation were established, which analyze the flow field pressure distribution and demonstrate the hydrodynamic lubrication effect of the micro-textures. The ball-on disk friction test showed that the area density of the micro-textures had a significant influence on the friction and wear properties. The micro-texture with the area density of 20% and the average dimple diameter of 36 μm showed the highest volume wear rate reduction of 70% and the friction coefficient reduction of 20% respectively. The results indicated that the simultaneous laser in-situ generation of graphene micro-textures is an effective way of enhancing tribological properties on the ductile iron surface. It enhances the hardness of textured surfaces, thermal diffusion, debris capture ability, and fluid dynamic lubrication effect.

Despite progress in engineering both vascularized tissues and oriented tissues, the fabrication of 3D vascularized oriented tissues remains a challenge due to an inability to successfully integrate vascular and anisotropic structures that can support mass transfer and guide cell alignment, respectively. More importantly, there is a lack of an effective approach to guiding the scaffold design bearing both structural features. Here, an approach is presented to optimize the bifurcated channels within an anisotropic scaffold based on oxygen transport simulation and biological experiments. The oxygen transport simulation is performed using the experimentally measured effective oxygen diffusion coefficient and hydraulic permeability of the anisotropic scaffolds, which are also seeded with muscle precursor cells and cultured in a custom‐made perfusion bioreactor. Symmetric bifurcation model is used as fractal unit to design the channel network based on biomimetic principles. The bifurcation level of channel network is further optimized based on the oxygen transport simulation, which is then validated by DNA quantification assay and pimonidazole immunostaining. This study provides a practical guide to optimizing bifurcated channels in anisotropic scaffolds for oriented tissue engineering. Question retrieval is an extremely important research field in Community Question Answering (CQA). Most existing question retrieval methods depend on semantic analysis of questions, whose effectiveness suffers from the short texts of the noise words in the question corpus. In order to recommend the questions with more advanced knowledge to users, the influence of the questions' popularity should be considered during retrieving questions. To make retrieved questions with both similar semantics and high popularity, we propose an Integrated Retrieval Framework for Similar Questions named Word-semantic Embedded Label Clustering – LDA with Question Life Cycle (WELQLC-QR), consisting of Word-semantic Embedded Label Clustering – LDA (WEL) and Question Life Cycle Optimization Similar Question List Strategy (QLC). Firstly, WEL is proposed for question retrieval from the perspective of semantic matching. It not only overcomes the problem of over-generalization of the semantic information extracted by topic models when facing short questions with multi-levels labels, but also avoids the influence of noise vocabularies during semantic extracting of the questions. Then, based on the internal factors (i.e., the number of comments and answers to the question) and external factors (i.e., programming language ranking information) of questions, QLC constructs a popularity-predicted model to optimize the similar question set searched by WEL, making the final retrieval results both semantically similar and popular. Finally, experiments are conducted on CQADupStack dataset, and results show that the MRR@N of WELQLC-QR model has an average increase of 8.99%, 8.3%, 4.74% and 3.56% compared with that of L-LDA, LC-LDA, BM25 and Word2vec, respectively.
