1. Significance of the actual state of the organism for the reactibility of the liver in experimental liver disease

Abstract

Summary:

1.  Repeated administration of carbon tetrachloride to dogs with lesioned liver and to healthy animals produces marked changes in the biochemical parameters of the serum at the beginning of the administration of the hepatotoxic agent.
2.  The size of these changes tends to decrease. After a few months the changes show a marked tendency to normalize despite the presence of the morphological lesions and the continued administration of carbon tetrachloride. This response is the more marked the more frequent is the administration of carbon tetracloride.
3.  The altered reactibility to the hepatotoxic agent is not stable and after a certain period of latency the reactivity is of the same intensity as in healthy animals.

3. Electrical Potential Difference Across the Mid-Term Human Placenta

Abstract

Electrical potential difference across the midterm human placenta was recorded during hysterotomy. The average value registered was 2.7 mV (S.E. of mean=0.4 mV, n=7), fetus negative. From this value and the concentrations of Na, K, Ca, CI and inorganic phosphate in maternal and fetal plasma the possible mechanisms of net transport from mother to fetus are inferred. It is concluded that of the above ions only the transport of Na is compatible with simple diffusion.
