Evaluating new network protocols, applications, and architectures uses many kinds of experimentation environments: simulators, emulators, testbeds, and sometimes, combinations of these. As the functionality and complexity of these tools increases, mastering and efficiently using each of them is becoming increasingly difficult. In this paper, we consider how to make it easier to use multiple tools separately and together to improve the productivity of network researchers. We show how a single object model which encompasses every aspect of a typical experimentation workow can be used to completely describe experiments to be run within very different experimentation environments. Although Nepi is still in early design and prototyping stage, we expect that its ability to describe and automate easily complex mixed experiments will enable further experimentation with heterogenous networks.

Intelligent transportation systems, or ITS for short, includes a variety of services and applications such as road traffic management, traveler information systems, public transit system management, and autonomous vehicles, to name a few. ITS are expected to be an integral part of urban planning and future smart cities, contributing to improved road and traffic safety, transportation and transit efficiency, as well as to increased energy efficiency and reduced environmental pollution. On the other hand, ITS pose a variety of challenges due to its scalability and diverse quality‐of‐service needs, as well as the massive amounts of data it will generate. In this survey, we explore the use of machine learning (ML), which has recently gained significant traction, to enable ITS. We provide a thorough survey of the current state‐of‐the‐art of how ML technology has been applied to a broad range of ITS applications and services, such as cooperative driving and road hazard warning, and identify future directions for how ITS can further use and benefit from ML technology. We investigate embedding ML into ITS by categorizing the ML exploitation under perception, prediction, and management tasks of ITS applications. Furthermore, we outline trends of the future of ITS. We expect this survey to provide basic knowledge for beginners and to encourage insights into the future ITS.

The IEEE 802.11e medium access control (MAC) layer protocol is an emerging standard to support quality of service (QoS) in 802.11 wireless networks. Some recent work shows that the 802.11e hybrid coordination function (HCF) can improve significantly the QoS support in 802.11 networks. A simple HCF referenced scheduler has been proposed in the 802.11e which takes into account the QoS requirements of flows and allocates time to stations on the basis of the mean sending rate. As we show in this paper, this HCF referenced scheduling algorithm is only efficient and works well for flows with strict constant bit rate (CBR) characteristics. However, a lot of real-time applications, such as videoconferencing, have some variations in their packet sizes, sending rates or even have variable bit rate (VBR) characteristics. In this paper we propose FHCF, a simple and efficient scheduling algorithm for 802.11e that aims to be fair for both CBR and VBR flows. FHCF uses queue length estimations to tune its time allocation to mobile stations. We present analytical model evaluations and a set of simulations results, and provide performance comparisons with the 802.11e HCF referenced scheduler. We focus on the optimization of real-time multimedia transmission over 802.11-based ad hoc networks. In particular, we propose a simple and efficient cross-layer mechanism that considers both the channel conditions and characteristics of the media for dynamically selecting the transmission mode. This mechanism called media-oriented rate selection algorithm (MORSA) targets loss-tolerant applications such as VoD that do not require full reliable transmission. We provide an evaluation of this mechanism for MANETs using simulations with NS and analyze the video quality obtained with a fine-grain scalable video encoder based on a motion-compensated spatiotemporal wavelet transform. Our results show that MORSA achieves up to 4 Mbps increase in throughput and that the routing overhead decreases significantly. Transmission of a sample video flow over an 802.11a wireless channel has been evaluated with MORSA. Important improvement is observed in throughput, latency, and jitter while keeping a good level of video quality.

In this study, we report coexpression of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) in pancreatic carcinoma tissue associated with significantly elevated levels of both cytokines in the sera of pancreatic carcinoma patients. Using conditioned media (CM) of pancreatic carcinoma cells, we further demonstrate that tumor cell-derived TGF-β and IL-10 inhibited in an additive fashion both proliferation and the development of Th1-like responses in peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC. preparations derived from normal donors. The antiproliferative and Th1-suppressive activities contained in CM of pancreatic carcinoma cells were due primarily to IL-10 and/or TGF-β, as shown by the capacity of cytokine-specific neutralizing antibodies to reverse these effects. Finally, as compared to normal controls, PBMC derived from pancreatic carcinoma patients displayed a Th2-like cytokine expression pattern upon activation with either anti-CD3 antibody or Staphylococcus aureusstrain Cowan I. Taken together, these results suggest that aberrant production of TGF-β and IL-10 in pancreatic tumor patients skews T-cell cytokine production patterns in favor of a Th2 immunophenotype.

Cooperation between in vitro exogenous prolactin (PRL), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and interleukin-3 (IL-3) at an early step of in vitro erythroid differentiation has been shown in a previous study. To gain more insight into the role of PRL in in vivo hematopoiesis, we have now addressed the involvement of endogenous PRL in the growth of hematopoietic progenitors in a bone marrow (BM) stroma environment. The possible modulation of local PRL production by the inflammatory mediator platelet-activating factor (PAF), which is known to be produced by BM cells and to regulate pituitary PRL release, has also been evaluated. Development of burst-forming unit-erythroid (BFU-E) colonies from CD34+ hematopoietic progenitors cultured on a BM stroma cells (BMSC) layer was slightly, but significantly, reduced in the presence of an antihuman PRL antibody. Pretreatment of BMSC with PAF increased the BFU-E colony efficiency of cocultured CD34+ cells, and this effect was completely abrogated by the antiserum. PAF-modulated release of PRL by BMSC was confirmed by an enzyme-linked-immunospot (Elispot) technique. In addition, immunoprecipitation and Western blotting experiments showed two immunoreactive products in the BMSC culture medium. These corresponded to the nonglycosylated (23 kD) and glycosylated (25.5 kD) forms of pituitary PRL that are also expressed by the B-lymphoblastoid cell line IM9-P3. Specific increase of the nonglycosylated form and decrease of the glycosylated form was observed after PAF treatment. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of reverse transcribed RNA using PRL-specific primers showed the presence of PRL message in BMSC and IM9-P3 cells. In situ hybridization experiments with a rat PRL cDNA probe cross-reacting with human PRL mRNA confirmed its presence in a small fraction of unstimulated BMSC and in the majority of PAF-stimulated BMSC. The enhancing effect of PAF on PRL-mediated colony formation, PRL release, and mRNA activation was counteracted by pretreating BMSC with the PAF-receptor (R) antagonist WEB 2170. Lastly, responsiveness of BMSC to PAF was substantiated by the presence of the PAF-R mRNA on these cells.

Activation of the receptor tyrosine kinase c-kit by the kit-ligand, also known as stem cell factor (SCF), is essential to melanocyte and germ cell development and during the early stages of hematopoiesis. Deregulated expression of c-kit has been reported in malignancies affecting these lineages, i.e., myeloid leukemias, melanomas, and germ cell tumors. In addition, c-kit and SCF are coexpressed in some breast and colorectal cancer (CRC) cells, raising the question of whether c-kit serves an autocrine role in normal or malignant epithelial tissues. In this study, we demonstrate that human colorectal carcinomas, but not normal colorectal mucosa cells, coexpress SCF and c-kit in situ. Expression of c-kit was also observed in mucosa adjacent to colorectal tumor tissue. Consistent with a growth-regulatory role of SCF in CRC cells, exogenous SCF stimulated anchorage-dependent and anchorage-independent growth in four out of five CRC cell lines. Exogenous transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 added at nanomolar concentrations to HT-29 CRC cells, which express the type I, II, and III TGF-β receptors, downregulated c-kit expression to background levels and inhibited c-kit–dependent proliferation. Similarly, TGF-β1 inhibited SCF-dependent proliferation of three first-passage CRC cell lines. In summary, expression of the potential autocrine SCF/c-kit axis is a tumor-associated phenomenon in colorectal cancer that can be suppressed by TGF-β1 in TGF-β–responsive CRC cells. J. Cell. Ubiquity of portable computing devices coupled with wide availability of wireless communication present new impor- tant opportunities for applications involving media-rich content dissemination. However, as access networks become increasingly more heterogeneous, seamless data delivery across internets consisting of a variety of network technology becomes a real challenge. In this demonstration, we showcase a system that enables content dissemination over heterogeneous internets consisting of wired, infrastructure-based and infrastructure-less wireless networks that may be prone to intermittent connectivity. Using an efficient, yet flexible buffer management scheme, we are able to address application-specific performance requirements such as average delay, delivery probability, energy efficiency, etc. Our system uses the Message Delivery in Heterogeneous, Disruption-prone Networks (MeDeHa) [2]) framework to deliver messages across a heterogeneous internet coupled with History-Based Scheduling and Drop (HBSD) buffer management [1] as a way to optimize resources provided by opportunistic networks. MeDeHa, which is described in detail in [2], provides seamless data delivery over interconnecting networks of different types, i.e., infrastructure-based and infrastructure-less networks. MeDeHa's comprehensive approach to bridging infrastructure-based and infrastructureless networks also copes with intermittent connectivity. For this demonstration, we showcase a "complete stack" solution featuring, from to top to bottom, the DTN2 "bundle" layer, HBSD as an "external router" to DTN2, and MeDeHa, which handles message delivery. We have implemented, on a Linux-based testbed, (i) the MeDeHa framework, (ii) the HBSD [3] external router for the DTN2 [4] architecture.

This paper introduces source-channel adaptive rate control (SARC), a new congestion control algorithm for layered video transmission in large multicast groups. In order to solve the well-known feedback implosion problem in large multicast groups, we first present a mechanism for filtering RTCP receiver reports sent from receivers to the whole session. The proposed filtering mechanism provides a classification of receivers according to a predefined similarity measure. An end-to-end source and FEC rate control based on this distributed feedback aggregation mechanism coupled with a video layered coding system is then described. The number of layers, their rate, and their levels of protection are adapted dynamically to aggregated feedbacks. The algorithms have been validated with the NS2 network simulator.
