Abstract

Behcet's syndrome in families may affect children at an earlier age than their parents. Behcet's syndrome is a genetic condition causing inflammation of the eyes and blood vessels, with ulcerations in the mouth and on the genitals. Researchers interviewed 40 Behcet's patients in 18 families affected by the syndrome. The average age when symptoms began in children was 21 years old, while their affected parents had their first symptoms at an average age of 33 years. This pattern of genetic anticipation was observed in 84% of the families with Behcet's syndrome.
