Les anomalies hématologiques sont fréquemment observées au cours des hyperthyroïdies, elles sont exceptionnellement révélatrices et sont en général infracliniques. Ces anomalies soulèvent pour l’endocrinologue la problématique du risque de leur aggravation sous l’effet hématotoxique des antithyroïdiens de synthèse (ATS). Cependant certaines anomalies telles que la leuconeutropénie observée dans 5–20 % des cas, ne sont quelquefois que l’expression d’un phénomène physiologique de margination des globules blancs sous estimant faussement la numération de cette lignée et qu’il faut savoir déceler.

Les patients atteints d’hypothyroïdie primaire sont fréquemment rencontrés dans la pratique clinique. Cependant, les cas cliniques avec état d’anasarque sont exceptionnellement observés dans la pratique courante.

Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) is an underused edible aquatic perennial vegetable currently evaluated as a potential functional food source and promoted in the southeastern United States as a rich source of phytonutrients. There is a paucity of information concerning consumer acceptance and willingness to purchase edible, value-added lotus products in the southeastern United States. The purpose of this exploratory study was to evaluate the potential demand and consumer preference for fresh lotus rhizomes and value-added products namely lotus salad, baked lotus chips, and lotus stir-fry. Results of two taste panels indicated that lotus stir-fry was the most preferred value-added product with 77% of participants strongly liking stir-fry, whereas 92% of the participants were willing to recommend this preparation. Results suggest socioeconomic characteristics such as gender (P = 0.014), age (P = 0.005), income (P= 0.043), education (P= 0.003), shopping habits (P= 0.013), and type of meal purchased (P= 0.004) are the factors affecting consumer choice and willingness to recommend lotus stir-fry. Results provide information on consumer acceptance of fresh lotus rhizomes and valueadded products. Findings of this case study will assist in analyzing consumer behavior and development of sustainable niche markets for locally cultivated fresh edible lotus rhizomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors examined the usefulness of nested PCR (N-PCR) to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis(MTB) DNA in CSF for assessing the clinical course of tuberculous meningitis (TBM). N-PCR successfully detected MTB DNA in all nine CSF samples from patients with suspected TBM. During anti-tuberculosis treatments, N-PCR results converted from positive to negative, correlating with the improvement of the patient’s clinical condition.

Aims/Methods:To investigate whether smoking affects the serum level of leptin, 708 male workers aged 25–65 years old were cross-sectionally surveyed. Results:Multiple regression analysis indicated that among the various parameters examined, the level of leptin was positively associated with the body mass index and the levels of insulin, total cholesterol and uric acid, and was inversely associated with physical activity and the level of creatinine. The partial correlation coefficient of leptin was highest against the body mass index (r = 0.40), followed by insulin (0.29) and physical activity (–0.14), after adjustment for other leptin-related variables. However, no association was observed between the level of leptin and smoking (0.05), alcohol consumption (0.09) or age (0.09). Conclusions:The findings suggest that among life-style habits, physical activity, but not smoking or alcohol consumption, significantly affects the serum level of leptin in Japanese men.

Since 1971, stature and body weight in five siblings have been measured monthly. Time-series analysis of stature, body weight and their increments per month was made by the Program of Census Method IIX11 resulting in three components: a trend-and-cycle factor, a seasonal factor and an irregular factor.Significant seasonal variation was found in both stature and body weight. In two young subjects, trend curves of stature are very close to each other while those of body weight are different. Trend factor in increment indicates that growth rate of stature or body weight fluctuates, instead of being smooth, suggesting that from birth to maturity acceleration and deceleration occur alternately, like repeated retardations and subsequent catch-ups.A high peak of body weight increment precedes menarche by 1½ years in two girls. In one case, no adolescent spurt in stature was observed while a high peak appeared in body weight in that period.Irregularity in stature is about one-tenth that of body weight when the two are compared in terms of the ratio of SD of irregular factor/mean of trend factor.The raw data are given in an appendix.

Whole body counting of potassium-40 and anthropometric measurements were done on 88 urban and rural Japanese boys 12 to 14 years of age. The log-normal distribution provided a good fit to the observed data of potassium content in both groups. The urban and rural boys did not differ significantly in age, weight, body and sitting height, chest and abdomen circumferences, antero-posterior diameter of chest and abdomen, and grip strength. On the other hand, the mean potassium content, K/body weight, K/fat-free mass and estimated upper-arm muscle circumference were significantly greater in rural boys. Skinfold thickness and percentage fat were significantly greater in urban boys. In a regression analysis estimating whole body potassium from anthropometric variables, body weight and skinfold thickness were the most significant variables, accounting for 85·2% of the total variation. Estimation errors were smaller in the rural than in the urban group. Factor analysis was used to identify the factors which could explain the items measuring body composition and strength. Factor 1, in which potassium content and grip strength are the most important items, was designated as the ‘Muscular Factor’, and Factor 2, in which skinfold thickness and upperarm circumference are the most significant items, was designated as the ‘Fatness Factor’. The factor scores of rural subjects were scattered in a considerably narrower range than those of urban subjects.

Urinary excretions of hydroxyproline, creatinine and urea in 24 h specimens from 5 siblings have been determined monthly from 1971 to 1976 together with the measurements of body height and body weight. Changes with age in the urinary levels of these substances are in good agreement with those from cross-sectional studies in various age groups of children. Wide fluctuations of excretion levels occurred. The creatinine coefficients did not remain constant even over short periods. Menarche was observed shortly after the peak of hydroxyproline excretion at puberty. The hydroxyproline excretion pattern is similar to that of hydroxyproline index proposed by Whitehead, and it is quite different from that of hydroxyproline ratio.
