Benign and borderline epithelial ovarian tumors represent a substantial proportion of incidental adnexal lesions and familiarity with the typical imaging features on MR imaging can aid in their diagnosis and management. Clinical information such as menstrual status, age, and associated conditions is also important considerations when evaluating an adnexal lesion. Radiologists play an integral role in the preoperative evaluation process and can help guide treatment, particularly in those with lesions demonstrating benign or borderline features and those who may be candidates for fertility-sparing surgery.

Recently, we demonstrated the potential of synchrotron X-ray micro computed tomography (μ-CT) to visualise the spatial distribution of nanoparticle aggregates inside porous matrices. This paved the way for increasing our understanding of pore-scale nanoparticle retention processes. Here, we present the first 3D timelapse of nanoparticle retention in a sand packed column at the sub-micrometre scale and demonstrate the wealth of information that can be gained through accessing four dimensions, i.e.time and space. This includes i) visualisation of gradual pore space saturation with nanoparticles, ii) localisation of retention growth domains, iii) quantification of the growth of retained nanoparticle clusters, and iv) quantification of the dynamic re-mobilisation processes of retained nanoparticle clusters. The quantification revealed that the retention was primarily controlled by a ripening process but also showed a surprisingly large NP cluster re-mobilisation during injection (i.e., up to 50% of the retained NP were re-mobilised). Our results demonstrate that in situmonitoring of nanoparticle retention is technically feasible and will reveal novel details, likely even processes, of nanoparticle transport and retention at the pore scale.

Tropical peatlands are among the most carbon-dense ecosystems but land-use change has led to the loss of large peatland areas, associated with substantial greenhouse gas emissions. To design effective conservation and restoration policies, maps of the location and carbon storage of tropical peatlands are vital. This is especially so in countries such as Peru where the distribution of its large, hydrologically intact peatlands is poorly known. Here field and remote sensing data support the model development of peatland extent and thickness for lowland Peruvian Amazonia. We estimate a peatland area of 62,714 km2(5th and 95th confidence interval percentiles of 58,325 and 67,102 km2, respectively) and carbon stock of 5.4 (2.6–10.6) PgC, a value approaching the entire above-ground carbon stock of Peru but contained within just 5% of its land area. Combining the map of peatland extent with national land-cover data we reveal small but growing areas of deforestation and associated CO2emissions from peat decomposition due to conversion to mining, urban areas and agriculture. The emissions from peatland areas classified as forest in 2000 represent 1–4% of Peruvian CO2forest emissions between 2000 and 2016. We suggest that bespoke monitoring, protection and sustainable management of tropical peatlands are required to avoid further degradation and CO2emissions.

Die Patientengruppe der Erwachsenen mit angeborenen Herzfehlern (EMAH) ist mittlerweile bereits größer als die der Kinder mit angeborenen Herzfehlern. EMAH-Patienten weisen auch nach Reparaturoperationen oft komplexe pathophysiologische und anatomische Verhältnisse auf. Bei Komplikationen kann es sehr rasch zu Notfallsituationen auch bei ansonsten asymptomatischen oder nur wenig symptomatischen Patienten kommen. Gemessen an der Gesamtzahl der Patienten, die von Notärzten und in den Notaufnahmen versorgt werden, sind EMAH-Notfallsituationen nach wie vor sehr selten. Diese Übersicht soll die Notfallbetreuung von EMAH-Patienten erleichtern. Für ca. zwei Drittel aller Notfälle sind Rhythmusstörungen und akute Herzinsuffizienz verantwortlich. Rhythmusstörungen müssen in der Regel zügig terminiert werden, weil sie unbehandelt rasch zur kardialen Dekompensation führen können. Bei Scheitern der medikamentösen Therapie oder hämodynamischer Instabilität müssen EMAH-Patienten mit tachykarden Rhythmusstörungen rasch elektrisch kardiovertiert werden. Symptomatische Bradykardien können eine rasche Schrittmacherversorgung erforderlich machen. Aufgrund der komplexen Anatomie kann das Einschwemmen eines transvenösen Interim-Schrittmachers bei einzelnen Vitien unmöglich sein. Die akute kardiale Dekompensation bei EMAH ist oft durch ein akutes Rechtsherzversagen verursacht. Weitere relativ häufige Aufnahmegründe sind Infektionen, Synkopen, Thromboembolien und Aortendissektion. Der Herzpass der Patienten informiert über das vorliegende Vitium. Die umgehende Kontaktaufnahme mit dem behandelnden EMAH-Zentrum wird dringend empfohlen.

Obtaining pore scale knowledge about retention mechanisms of nanoparticles (NP) is inherently difficult and can in turn restrict accurate forward prediction. Herein, an X-ray microcomputed tomography (μ-CT, 0.5 μm pixel size) approach is described which is capable of resolving sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) retention at the pore scale, by using difference images of pre- and post-injection scans to account for local background variations around grains on a per pixel basis. The type of information that can be obtained from this approach including its limitations is discussed based on a first set of S-nZVI transport experiments performed in columns filled with irregular fine sand, where μ-CT images were obtained before and after S-nZVI injection at three positions along the column. A total of 5 column experiments were performed testing the effect of three different superficial injection velocities (5.8 × 10−4m s−1, 2.9 × 10−4m s−1and 1.5 × 10−4m s−1) and three different S-nZVI concentrations (5.0 g L−1, 10 g L−1and 20 g L−1) on S-nZVI retention behaviour, while the total injected S-nZVI mass was kept constant across experiments. The results clearly show that S-nZVI retention is determined by physical straining. Column depth and S-nZVI aggregate size dependency during straining appears to play a role, yet depth extension seems limited. Ripening deposition likely also occurred and increased with a decrease in injection velocity and/or increase in S-nZVI concentration. The local pore geometry and the flow regime strongly impacted S-nZVI attachment and retention behaviour, which suggests that pore space descriptors and velocity should be included in future predictive models. Together these results provide new perspectives for further studies of nZVI-based particle retention and transport in porous media.

New regulations intended to correct unethical practices in the conduct of partnership taxation have been proposed by Congress and the Treasury Department. The regulations strengthen tax rules on the removal of assets from partnerships. Specific suggestions to further improve the proposed regulations with regard to treatment of liabilities and disclosure requirements are discussed. The application of these new regulations to different scenarios are presented.

We are a group of archaeologists, anthropologists, curators and geneticists representing diverse global communities and 31 countries. All of us met in a virtual workshop dedicated to ethics in ancient DNA research held in November 2020. There was widespread agreement that globally applicable ethical guidelines are needed, but that recent recommendations grounded in discussion about research on human remains from North America are not always generalizable worldwide. Here we propose the following globally applicable guidelines, taking into consideration diverse contexts. These hold that: (1) researchers must ensure that all regulations were followed in the places where they work and from which the human remains derived; (2) researchers must prepare a detailed plan prior to beginning any study; (3) researchers must minimize damage to human remains; (4) researchers must ensure that data are made available following publication to allow critical re-examination of scientific findings; and (5) researchers must engage with other stakeholders from the beginning of a study and ensure respect and sensitivity to stakeholder perspectives. We commit to adhering to these guidelines and expect they will promote a high ethical standard in DNA research on human remains going forward.

Der vorliegende Beitrag analysiert einige Aspekte und kommt zu einer nuancierten Antwort auf diese Frage. Von einer grundsätzlichen Inkompatibilität kann wohl nicht die Rede sein.
