Abstract:Age at first reproduction (AFR) has been difficult to quantify in mammals, as the most commonly used methods require reproductive tracts or direct observations. However, work in several large mammal species suggests that the width of cementum light bands in teeth decline once females begin to reproduce, suggesting that teeth structures might provide a new tool to examine AFR. To determine if changes in cementum light band width could be used to calculate AFR for the northern sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni), we measured cementum light band widths on sectioned premolar teeth and compared them to reproductive tracts. We classified otters as parous if any single light band was narrower than a threshold value, selected as the value that minimized error rates. At a threshold value of 0.32, we correctly identified otters as parous or nulliparous in 83% of cases (n= 92) as compared to reproductive tracts, and the AFR estimated from teeth samples (3.52 ± 0.032 yr) was not different from that determined by reproductive tract analysis (3.45 ± 0.031 yr; t-test, P> 0.05). These data support the use of cementum as an indicator of past reproduction in individual female otters, which can then be used to estimate average AFR. Given that declines in cementum width have been described for other mammal species, the same quantitative approach used here could be applied to other species. To assess the ability of patients with AD to produce, repeat, and comprehend affective prosody in relationship to severity of dementia, aphasic deficits, and changes in emotional behaviors.

Survival of juvenile Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddellii in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica was examined using 25 years of tagging and resighting data. Using mark–recapture models, we estimated age- and sex-specific apparent survival (survival confounded with emigration) rates of Weddell seals from birth to 6 years of age for 17 cohorts (1973–89). Survival in the first 2 years of life (0.429 and 0.635 for the first and second years, respectively) was lower than annual survival after 2 years of age (0.806), and was significantly lower for males than for females. First-year survival of the 1978 and 1983 cohorts was significantly lower than average first-year survival across cohorts. Reproductive rate of adult females was significantly correlated with first-year survival in concurrent years, but not when first-year survival lagged reproductive rate by 1 year nor with annual survival after 1 year of age. This correlation, however, was only significant in male first-year survival, possibly indicating that survival of males is more dependent on maternal or environmental conditions than survival of females. Average weaning mass varied significantly among cohorts and was nearly correlated to reproductive rate of adult females. This may indicate that maternal condition is reduced in years of low reproduction although more data are needed to test this conclusively.

Abstract: Between 1993 and 1995, the diving behavior and movement patterns of 23 weaned Weddell seal pups (Leptonychotes weddellii) were tracked in the Ross Sea. Antarctica, using satellite-linked time-depth recorders. Regression analyses revealed that for seals of between 8 and 27 weeks old, age was poorly correlated with the dive depth, duration, or frequency. However, changes in dive parameters suggested that Weddell seal pups were attempting to maximize dive time, but the manner in which this was done depended on age and time of day. Movement patterns indicated that most Weddell seal pups left their natal area by the end of February, and traveled north along the Antarctic continent coastline. Several individuals returned to McMurdo Sound, but others were last located more than 400 km from McMurdo. Routes followed suggest that pups can use the pack ice habitat, but prefer to remain closer to the coastline than do adults.

The cell-cycle kinetics of synchronized K562 human leukemic cells and bone marrow cells from adults with acute leukemia were studied in order to develop more reliable methods for producing increased numbers of mitoses, particularly those with elongated chromosomes suitable for high-resolution banding. Parameters examined included DNA content, mitotic index (MI), and chromosome preparations. K562 cells synchronized with methotrexate (MTX), thymidine (Tdr), or hydroxyurea (HU) showed two-fold increases in peak MI. Optimal harvesting times after release from block were approximately 10.5, 12.5, and 14.5 h for MTX, HU, and Tdr, respectively. MTX was selected for studies with cells from patients. Cells from 7 of the 10 patients studied showed 4.4-fold increases in peak MI. The optimal harvesting time was 9.5 to 11.5 h after release from block, considerably later than the 6 h time previously assumed in studies using stimulated lymphocytes. Cells from the three remaining patients showed no increase in MI after synchronization: and the lack of response may have been related to the high proportion of cells in G0+G1 prior to MTX exposure. For both the K562 cell line and most patient specimens, the combination of synchronization with appropriate release times and short Colcemid exposure (10 min) resulted in substantially improved chromosome preparations.

Stomach contents of crabeater (Lobodon carcinophagus) and leopard (Hydrurga leptonyx) seals collected in the pack ice west of the antarctic Peninsula in August–September 1985 were analyzed. Food remains were found in 7 of 56 crabeater seals and 5 of 29 leopard seals. The primary foods were krill (Euphausia superba) which occurred in all 12 stomachs, and fish (Pleuragramma antarcticum) which occurred in 3. Eleven of the seals with food in their stomachs were collected in the southern portion of Bismark Strait. The incidence of feeding seemed highest in pregnant females. These results, and comparisons with previous collections, suggest that krill were not abundant or widely distributed in the area at the time the seals were collected. The sizes of krill eaten by crabeater and leopard seals were very similar, and were significantly larger than krill found in 2 samples taken by midwater trawls in nearby open water.

Several strains of Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia hermsii can bind human Lys-plasminogen specifically. Affinity blots using 125I-labeled plasminogen showed that numerous polypeptides of all the strains and species tested could bind via lysine residues to the plasminogen molecule since binding could be completely inhibited by the lysine analog epsilon-aminocaproic acid. Binding analysis using 125I-labeled plasminogen on live intact organisms showed that the organisms possess two binding sites for plasminogen: a high-affinity site with a Kd of 24 +/- 12 pM and 106 +/- 14 binding sites per spirochete and a low-affinity site with a Kd of 20 +/- 4 nM and 2,683 +/- 36 binding sites per spirochete. Indirect immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy showed a generalized but punctate pattern of plasminogen binding to the spirochete surface. Exogenously provided urokinase-type plasminogen activator converted B. burgdorferi surface-bound plasminogen to enzymatically active plasmin as demonstrated by the breakdown of the chromogenic plasmin substrate S2251. Plasmin-coated organisms showed an enhanced ability to penetrate endothelial cell monolayers grown on connective tissue substrates compared to untreated controls (P < 0.001). This functional assay demonstrated that enzymatically active plasmin on the surface of spirochetes can lead to greater invasion of tissues.

The correlation between urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) expression and tumor cell invasion and metastasis has been well documented. Urokinase converts the zymogen plasminogen to plasmin, a trypsin-like enzyme with broad substrate specificities. Net uPA activity is determined not only by the amount of the enzyme itself, but also by its state of activation and the amount of specific plasminogen activator inhibitors (PAIs) present. Both uPA and its substrate, plasminogen, can bind to cells via specific membrane-associated receptors. Expression of uPA, uPA receptor (uPAR), and PAIs is regulated by growth factors, oncogenes, and other effector molecules. In the present review we discuss the interactions of uPA with its receptor, inhibitors, and substrate and how these interactions influence malignant behavior. We also review recent reports in which investigators have used anti-catalytic antibodies and/or gene transfection to demonstrate that uPA is directly involved in tumor cell invasion and metastasis.

T1/ST2 is a receptor-like molecule homologous to the type I interleukin-1 receptor. Despite this sequence similarity, we have been unable to demonstrate binding of T1/ST2 to any of the three interleukin-1 species. In searching for a ligand for T1/ST2, we have cloned a cell surface protein to which it binds. This protein is unable to initiate signal transduction by the T1/ST2 receptor in several in vitro assays.

Germ-line mutations of tumor suppressor genes confer strong predisposition to tumor formation. In the rat, a form of dominantly inherited renal carcinoma (RC) results in multiple chromophobe cell tumors that resemble the human disease, and heterozygous carriers (RC/+) are highly susceptible to environmental agents (radiation and chemical carcinogens), making it a desirable model to study epithelial carcinogenesis. By linkage analysis, the locus of the inherited RC mutation was mapped to rat chromosomal band 10q12, near the protamine locus (logarithm of odds score = 17.96). Renal tumors also showed a loss of heterozygosity at this locus, lending support to the recessive nature of this putative tumor suppressor gene. Our result suggested that the human homolog of the RC gene may reside on human chromosome 16, not known to be altered commonly in human RC.

Universal mapping probes (UMPs) are defined as short segments of human DNA that are useful for physical and genetic mapping in a wide variety of mammals. The most useful UMPs contain a conserved DNA sequence immediately adjoined to a highly polymorphic CA repeat. The conserved region determines physical gene location, whereas the CA repeat facilitates genetic mapping. Both the CA repeat and its neighboring sequence are highly conserved in evolution. This permits molecular, cytogenetic, and genetic mapping of UMPs throughout mammalia. UMPs are significant because they make genetic information cumulative among well-studied species and because they transfer such information from "map rich" organisms to those that are "map poor." As a demonstration of the utility of UMPs, comparative maps between human chromosome 3 (HSA3) and the rat genome have been constructed. HSA3 is defined by at least 12 syntenic clusters located on seven different rat chromosomes. These data, together with previous comparative mapping information between human, mouse, and bovine genomes, allow us to propose a distinct evolutionary pathway that connects HSA3 with the chromosomes of rodents, artiodactyls, and primates. The model predicts a parsimonious phylogenetic tree, is readily testable, and will be of considerable use for determining the pathways of mammalian evolution.

Vaccination of mice with either Formalin-killed cells or cell extracts of a virulent strain and a weakly virulent strain of Vibrio vulnificus or with rabbit antisera (AS) against the Formalin-killed cells and cell extracts protected against the virulent strain of V. vulnificus. However, the virulent strain vaccines and AS elicited a significantly stronger immune response than the weakly virulent strain vaccines and AS. Adsorption of the AS with either the homologous or heterologous Formalin-killed cells significantly reduced the ability of the AS to protect mice. The major protective antigen(s) in the cell extracts migrated in the void volume of Sephacryl S-400 superfine, was not effectively sedimented by centrifugation at 100,000 X g for 2 h, had an isoelectric point of 3.8 to 4.2, and was sensitive to boiling or autoclaving for 15 min, periodate oxidation, and exposure to pH 12 but was resistant to 56 degrees C, trypsin, pronase, RNase, neuraminidase, and pH 4.5. Electron microscopy revealed that the virulent strain possessed a more dense ruthenium red-staining layer on its outer membrane and had a much smoother surface than the weakly virulent strain. Our results provide evidence that a major protective antigen and virulence factor of V. vulnificus is a heat-labile, acidic polysaccharide located on the bacterial surface.

Phospholipase A2 and lysophospholipase activities were detected in the culture supernatant fluids of a virulent strain of Vibrio vulnificus. The phospholipase A2 was inactivated by heating at 56 degrees C for 30 min, had an apparent molecular weight of greater than or equal to 80,000 (estimated by gel filtration with Sephadex G-75), and a pI of ca. 5.0. Phospholipid hydrolysis was unaffected by Ca2+ or ethylene glycol-bis(beta-aminoethyl ether)-N,N-tetraacetic acid and was optimal at pH 5.0 to 5.5. The lysophospholipase was not affected by heating at 56 degrees C for 30 min but was inactivated at 100 degrees C and had an apparent molecular weight of greater than or equal to 80,000 and a pI of ca. 4.0. The enzymes were detected coincidentally with a previously described extracellular cytolysin of V. vulnificus; however, they were physically separable from the toxin (which did not possess phospholipase A, C, or D activity) by gel filtration with Sephadex G-75.

Genetic predisposition to neoplasia often involves tumor suppressor genes. One such model of hereditary renal carcinoma was described in the rat by Eker. These tumors share morphologic similarities with human renal cancer. Linkage analysis localized the inherited mutation to rat chromosome band 10q12. This region is syntenic with human chromosome band 16p13.3, the site of the tuberous sclerosis 2 (TSC2) gene. A specific rearrangement of the rat homologue of TSC2 was found to cosegregate with carriers of the predisposing mutation. Tumors with or without loss of heterozygosity expressed only the mutant allele, consistent with the two-hit hypothesis. This mutation gave rise to an aberrant transcript that deletes the 3' end normally containing a region of homology with the catalytic domain of rap1GAP.

The prevalence and the principal epidemiological characteristics of pityriasis versicolor have been studied in a randomized population of 870 adult individuals (418 males and 452 females) in the Central African Republic. The general clinical prevalence was 16·6%. Males were affected more often than females (20·6% vs. 12·9%). For both sexes, the maximum prevalence was in the 15 to 25-year-old age groups (23·5%). Lesions commonly occurred over the face (49·3%) and upper trunk (48·6%). Different climatic areas within the country, type of urbanization, religion and general hygiene showed no relevance to the disease. The prevalence was higher among people living in rammed-earth houses than in people living in hard-built houses. The sebaceous activity of the skin, a feature which is racially and genetically determined, probably constitutes a primary factor for developing this mycosis, associated with the tropical climate as an additional environmental factor.

We report a novel human gene whose product specifically associates with the negative regulatory domain of the Wilms' tumor gene product (WT1) in a yeast two-hybrid screen and with WT1 in immunoprecipitation and glutathione S-transferase (GST) capture assays. The gene encodes a 17-kDa protein that has 56% amino acid sequence identity with yeast ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (yUBC) 9, a protein required for cell cycle progression in yeast, and significant identity with other subfamilies of ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes. The human gene fully complements yeast that have a temperature-sensitive yUBC9 gene mutation to fully restore normal growth, indicating that we have cloned a functionally conserved human (h) homolog of yUBC9. Transcripts of hUBC9 of 4.4 kilobases (kb), 2.8 kb, and 1.3 kb were found in all human tissues tested. A single copy of the hUBC9 gene was found and localized to human chromosome 16p13.3. We conclude that hUBC9 retains striking structural and functional conservation with yUBC9 and suggest a possible link of the ubiquitin/proteosome proteolytic pathway and the WT1 transcriptional repressor system.

Abstract: The diet of adult and juvenile Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, was determined from both scat and stable isotope analyses, to ascertain if foraging behavior varied with age, season, or diving pattern. Scats were collected over 6 years and recovered hard parts identified. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values were determined for seal blood samples and potential prey items and used to identify primary prey species and assess trophic interactions. Pleuragramma antarcticum remains were recovered from between 70 and 100% of the scats, and there was little evidence for inter-annual or age-specific variation in foraging behavior. However, stable isotope and dive data analyses indicated that while most seals foraged predominantly on pelagic fish and squid, some juveniles concentrated on shallow benthic Trematomus spp. Combining these three methods permitted firm conclusions about diet and foraging behavior to be drawn.

We have found that two alleles of the MET locus are rearranged in the human cell line MNNG-HOS. One allele is the previously characterized TPR-MET oncogene and the other is found on a der(7)t(1;7)(q23;q32) marker chromosome. These data and in situ chromosomal hybridization analysis would indicate that MET and, therefore, the cystic fibrosis locus are located at bands q31-q32 on human chromosome 7. Using somatic cell hybrids, we show that the chromosome containing the TPR-MET oncogene is grossly rearranged and contains both the upstream and downstream portions of the MET protooncogene locus. These results demonstrate that the TPR-MET oncogene rearrangement involving chromosomes 1 and 7 is either due to an insertion of TPR sequences into the MET locus or is more complex. We also show that the upstream MET protooncogene locus is deleted on der(7), while the downstream portion is retained. We cannot exclude that this is due to an interstitial chromosomal deletion or to a more complex rearrangement, but if MET maps at the breakpoint in der(7), then the 3' end of the MET transcription unit should be oriented towards the centromere. We also show that other DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism markers tightly linked with the inheritance of cystic fibrosis are deleted on der(7).

HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells differentiated to eosinophils and eosinophilic precursors when cultured under mildly alkaline conditions (pH 7.6-7.8) for 7 d without refeeding. New cytoplasmic granules appeared blue in the least mature cells and red in the most mature cells when stained with Wright-Giemsa. The granules also stained with Luxol-fast-blue, a characteristic of eosinophil granules. Furthermore, most cells contained the eosinophil major basic protein (MBP); the Charcot-Leyden Crystal (CLC) protein (lysophospholipase), eosinophil peroxidase, acid phosphatase, and arylsulfatase were also detected in a portion of these cells. The eosinophil major basic protein was found in a high proportion of undifferentiated cells, and thus may be constituitively produced. By examining finely banded chromosomes, translocation break points were demonstrated at q22 on one chromosome 16 and at q23 on the other homologue; abnormalities in this region of the long arm of 16 are a characteristic finding in the recently described syndrome of acute myelomonocytic leukemia (AMMoL) with abnormal bone marrow eosinophils. In common with the bone marrow eosinophils in these patients, the HL-60 eosinophil granules contained chloroacetate esterase and periodic-acid Schiff (PAS) reactive material; crystalloid inclusions were rare. Therefore, the HL-60 cell line appears to be an in vitro model for eosinophilopoiesis and may be specially suited for the study of the abnormal eosinophils seen in certain malignant conditions.

Hereditary renal carcinoma (RC) in the rat, originally reported by R. Eker in 1954, is an example of a Mendelian dominant predisposition to a specific cancer in an experimental animal. At the histologic level, RCs develop through multiple stages from early preneoplastic lesions (e.g., atypical tubules) to adenomas in virtually all heterozygotes by the age of 1 year. The homozygous mutant condition is lethal at approximately 10 days of fetal life. Ionizing radiation induces additional tumors in a linear dose-response relationship, suggesting that in heterozygotes two events (one inherited, one somatic) are necessary to produce tumors, and that the predisposing gene is a tumor suppressor gene. No genetic linkage has yet been found between the Eker mutation and rat DNA sequences homologous to those in human chromosome 3p, the presumed site of the putative tumor suppressor gene responsible for human RC. Nonrandom loss of rat chromosome 5 in RC-derived cell lines is sometimes associated with homozygous deletion of the interferon gene loci at rat chromosome bands 5q31-q33. Since this locus is not linked with the predisposing inherited gene in the Eker rat, it probably represents a second tumor suppressor gene involved in tumor progression.

We previously demonstrated that the putative oncogene AKT2 is amplified and overexpressed in some human ovarian carcinomas. We have now identified amplification of AKT2 in approximately 10% of pancreatic carcinomas (2 of 18 cell lines and 1 of 10 primary tumor specimens). The two cell lines with altered AKT2 (PANC1 and ASPC1) exhibited 30-fold and 50-fold amplification of AKT2, respectively, and highly elevated levels of AKT2 RNA and protein. PANC1 cells were transfected with antisense AKT2, and several clones were established after G418 selection. The expression of AKT2 protein in these clones was greatly decreased by the antisense RNA. Furthermore, tumorigenicity in nude mice was markedly reduced in PANC1 cells expressing antisense AKT2 RNA. To examine further whether overexpression of AKT2 plays a significant role in pancreatic tumorigenesis, PANC1 cells and ASPC1 cells, as well as pancreatic carcinoma cells that do not overexpress AKT2 (COLO 357), were transfected with antisense AKT2, and their growth and invasiveness were characterized by a rat tracheal xenotransplant assay. ASPC1 and PANC1 cells expressing antisense AKT2 RNA remained confined to the tracheal lumen, whereas the respective parental cells invaded the tracheal wall. In contrast, no difference was seen in the growth pattern between parental and antisense-treated COLO 357 cells. These data suggest that overexpression of AKT2 contributes to the malignant phenotype of a subset of human ductal pancreatic cancers.

A map of rat Chromosome (Chr) 10 was generated from 21 markers, mostly of conserved structural genes, by linkage analysis and fluorescence in situhybridization. The study emphasizes the proximal third of the chromosome which, until now, has been relatively devoid of markers. Based on comparative analysis, our data suggest that genes on rat Chr 10 are conserved on mouse Chr 11, 16, 17 and human Chr 16, 5, and 17.

We isolated cDNA clones containing the entire coding region of the putative oncogene AKT2. Sequence analysis and in vitro translation demonstrated that AKT2 encodes a 56-kDa protein with homology to serine/threonine kinases; moreover, this protein contains a Src homology 2-like domain. AKT2 was shown to be amplified and overexpressed in 2 of 8 ovarian carcinoma cell lines and 2 of 15 primary ovarian tumors. AKT2 was mapped to chromosome region 19q13.1-q13.2 by fluorescence in situ hybridization. In the two ovarian carcinoma cell lines exhibiting amplification of AKT2, the amplified sequences were localized within homogeneously staining regions. We conclude that AKT2 belongs to a distinct subfamily of protein-serine/threonine kinases containing Src homology 2-like domains and that alterations of AKT2 may contribute to the pathogenesis of ovarian carcinomas.

Direct evidence of the involvement of Cr(V) intermediacy in Cr(VI) heterogeneous photocatalytic reduction over TiO2 was obtained by EPR spectroscopy, in the presence and absence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The rate of formation of Cr(V) becomes rapidly inhibited in the absence of a hole scavenger. Addition of EDTA is found to efficiently suppress the electron-shuttle mechanism by which Cr(VI) reduction is inhibited. Analysis of the data indicates that Cr(V) is formed by a one-electron-transfer process and does not involve Cr(IV) disproportion. It is suggested that Cr(III) formation occurs similarly from Cr(IV) through a charge-transfer mechanism.

Le profil épidémiologique des patients vivant avec le VIH (PvVIH) dépistés après 50ans dans les pays en développement est encore mal connu. Cette étude a pour objectif de décrire le profil épidémiologique des PvVIH âgés (PA).

Malgré les efforts consentis par les gouvernements et les partenaires financiers, l’anémie maternelle et infantile semblent toujours élevée dans nos pays. Les facteurs associés sont mal documentés au Burkina Faso pour proposer des interventions pertinentes. L’objectif de notre étude était de déterminer la prévalence et la distribution de l’anémie maternelle et infantile au Burkina Faso.

Mutations of the neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) tumor suppressor gene cause the inherited disorder NF2 and are also common in malignant mesothelioma, which is not a characteristic feature of NF2. The authors report an asbestos-exposed person with NF2 and malignant mesothelioma. Immunohistochemical analysis of the mesothelioma confirmed loss of expression of the NF2 protein, and comparative genomic hybridization revealed losses of chromosomes 14, 15, and 22, and gain of 7. The authors propose that a person with a constitutional mutation of an NF2allele is more susceptible to mesothelioma.

Dans une précédente étude sur les accidents de la circulation sur un important axe routier au Cameroun (les 234 kilomètres de l’axe Yaoundé-Douala), nous avions mis en évidence les principales causes de ces accidents : défaillance mécanique, problèmes pneumatiques, dépassement dangereux et vitesse excessive. La plupart des conducteurs et des passagers impliqués dans ces accidents n’étaient pas sévèrement blessés. Cependant, il nous a semblé intéressant d’étudier les facteurs de risques d’être tué ou sévèrement blessé.

Le taux de mortalité maternelle demeure élevé au Burkina Faso même si, selon les statistiques, il a décru, passant de 5660 pour 100 000 naissances vivantes en 1993 à 3410. Disposant des données de l’EDS-2010, nous avons voulu déterminer les régions à haut risque contextuel de morbidité et de mortalité maternelle.

I hypothesize that predation on newborn young represents a seasonal analog to time-lagged predator–prey cycles and can cause directional selection against late birthing. Newborn offspring represent an irruption of vulnerable prey to which predators can respond by adapting their search efforts to find and capture these prey. Those born early would be the 1st to achieve the size or mobility necessary to escape predators. Simple models of predation on moose calves were used to demonstrate how changes in predator efficiency as newborns appear, combined with a short period of offspring vulnerability, would produce selection against late birthing. Of the 9 published studies of mammals, 6 showed evidence of selection against late-born young that could be driven by predation on neonates. If true, this hypothesis has consequences for the way we interpret evidence for “predator swamping” and optimal birthing periods in mammals and other taxa with synchronous reproduction.

We studied behavioral and ecologic effects of differential predation pressure on moose (Alces alces gigas) in the eastern Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska, during 1996–1998. Annual mortality from grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) and wolf (Canis lupus) predation was higher for solitary yearling moose than for dependent yearlings (those with adults) and solitary adults. We tested hypotheses that solitary yearlings have heightened levels of vigilance and greater variation in vigilance responses and spend more time near protective cover than do dependent yearlings or adults. Proportion of time spent vigilant did not differ between solitary and dependent yearlings, and no differences were found between solitary yearlings and adults. However, variation in vigilance increased with distance to protective cover for yearlings but not for adults. Only at distances ≥20 m from protective cover did variation in vigilance differ between solitary yearlings and adults. Increased variation in vigilance at distances far from protective cover, locations where putative vulnerability to predators is greatest, may account for increased mortality among solitary yearlings. Mean distance to protective cover was not different between solitary and dependent yearlings or between solitary yearlings and adults. Because hypotheses regarding differences in vigilance and use of protective cover between age and social status categories generally were not supported, other factors may be involved in promoting high vulnerability of independent yearlings to predation. Smaller body size and maternal defense are unexplored alternatives for explaining differential mortality between yearlings with and without mothers.

We studied survival of 220 calves of radiocollared moose (Alces alces) from parturition to the end of July in southcentral Alaska from 1994 to 1997. Prior studies established that predation by brown bears (Ursus arctos) was the primary cause of mortality of moose calves in the region. Our objectives were to characterize vulnerability of moose calves to predation as influenced by age, date, snow depths, and previous reproductive success of the mother. We also tested the hypothesis that survival of twin moose calves was independent and identical to that of single calves. Survival of moose calves from parturition through July was 0.27 ± 0.03 SE, and their daily rate of mortality declined at a near constant rate with age in that period. Mean annual survival was 0.22 ± 0.03 SE. Previous winter's snow depths or survival of the mother's previous calf was not related to neonatal survival. Selection for early parturition was evidenced in the 4 years of study by a 6.3% increase in the hazard of death with each daily increase in parturition date. Although there was no significant difference in survival of twin and single moose calves, most twins that died disappeared together during the first 15 days after birth and independently thereafter, suggesting that predators usually killed both when encountered up to that age.

We studied condition and reproduction of moose (Alces alces) in southcentral Alaska using ultrasonography to determine rump-fat thickness and numbers of corpora lutea and embryos in early gestation, and intensive radio-tracking of the same animals in spring to measure rates of calving and neonatal survival. Rump-fat thickness, pregnancy rate, and embryo size were less among female moose accompanied by a calf in autumn. Fifteen percent of ovulations failed to result in a detectable embryo, and additional reproductive losses occurred between early gestation and birth. Body condition in the autumn was correlated positively with pregnancy and calving rates and negatively with reproductive losses in both early and late gestation and neonatal mortality. Our study documents the extent to which body condition and prior reproductive success affect adjustments to reproductive effort made by female moose within a single reproductive cycle.

A small population of Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) was studied at White Island, Antarctica, where it is apparently isolated from other populations of Weddell seals by 18 km of floating glacier ice. The seals at White Island have increased from only nine in 1968–1969 to 26 seals older than pups in 1993–1994, with a concurrent decline in body condition. No evidence of immigration or emigration was found. Higher survival of adult seals, lower fecundity, and higher mortality of pups occurred at White Island relative to seals in an open population only 30 km away in Erebus Bay. High neonatal and preparturient mortality at White Island, including pups with congenital deformities, suggest that genetic viability of this population is questionable. If it remains isolated, the population of Weddell seals at White Island is a model for small populations of endangered seals and possibly for conditions leading to speciation in polar phocids.
