Abstract

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have conducted a study on gene therapy for heart failure, specifically targeting the inflammatory cytokine Igfbp7. The study examined the various types of cells in the heart and their responses to stressors. The researchers found that pressure overload led to the development of complex blood vessels in the hearts of mice, causing DNA damage and cardiac dysfunction. They also discovered that Igfbp7 produced by senescent endothelial cells contributed to cardiac dysfunction, and that a vaccine targeting Igfbp7 could potentially prevent the development of heart failure. The study monitored T-cell responses and tumor mutational burden in 20 patients and observed changes in T-cell phenotypes and clonality during treatment. Abstract

A recent study conducted in Japan has identified risk factors for early recurrence of gastric cancer after radical gastrectomy followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. The study, which included 553 patients, found that a postoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen level of 5 ng/mL and a neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio of >1.8 were independent risk factors for early recurrence. However, these factors were not associated with late recurrence. The study suggests that these markers can be used to predict early recurrence in patients with stage II or III gastric cancer.
