Systems with unmaintained embedded open source software (OSS) components are vulnerable to severe risks. This article introduces the OSS Abandonment Risk Assessment model to help companies avoid potentially dire consequences.

Different tools adopt different terms, metrics, and ways to identify and measure technical debt. We attempt to clarify the situation by comparing the features and popularity of technical debt measurement tools and analyzing the existing empirical evidence on their validity.

Serverless systems are becoming more popular and being adopted by a large number of companies. Serverless computing is a new paradigm that provides a platform to efficiently develop and deploy applications to the market without having to manage any underlying infrastructure.<sup>1,2</sup> However, serverless solutions introduce several new issues that companies need to tackle. In this article, we introduce serverless technology and its evolution, discuss its benefits and issues, and describe future challenges that researchers should address.

Code smells and architectural smells (also called bad smells) are symptoms of poor design that can hinder code understandability and decrease maintainability. Several bad smells have been defined in the literature for both generic architectures and specific architectures. However, cloud-native applications based on microservices can be affected by other types of issues. In order to identify a set of microservice-specific bad smells, researchers collected evidence of bad practices by interviewing 72 developers with experience in developing systems based on microservices. Then, they classified the bad practices into a catalog of 11 microservice-specific bad smells frequently considered harmful by practitioners. The results can be used by practitioners and researchers as a guideline to avoid experiencing the same difficult situations in the systems they develop.

The Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK) Dataset represents an unprecedented corpus which exposes a near complete collection of bibliographic resources for a specific research discipline, namely the connected areas of Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining. Covering over five years of scientific literature from the most relevant conferences and journals, the dataset provides Linked Data about bibliographic metadata as well as full text of the paper body. The latter was enabled through special licensing agreements with ACM for publications not yet available through open access. The dataset has been designed following established Linked Data pattern, reusing established vocabularies and providing links to established schemas and entity coreferences in related datasets. Given the temporal and topic coverage of the dataset, being a near-complete corpus of research publications of a particular discipline, it facilitates scientometric investigations, for instance, about the evolution of a scientific field over time, or correlations with other disciplines, what is documented through its usage in a wide range of scientific studies and applications.

Integrating specific technology-enhanced learning activities in a traditional curriculum is an important challenge in CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) scenarios. As a matter of fact, monitoring student learning by means of formative assessment practices is successfully used to supervise learning progress and to recognise students' efforts in university learning environments, including CLIL courses. Preliminary results of a pilot experimentation of the MWS-Web platform specifically designed to support both learners' activities and their assessment conducted within the degree course in Dentistry at the University of Pavia are presented. The MSW-Web Storyboard was used by the teachers for formative assessment practices. A backwards stepwise regression model was developed in order to establish the relationship between the students' interactions in the MWS-Web platform and their learning performance. In particular, the model has provided significant clues that lead to consider the students' interactions on the MWS-Web Storyboard as an important factor to support formative assessment practices.

Open Source Software (OSS) products do not usually follow traditional software engineering development paradigms. Specifically, testing activities in OSS development may be quite different from those carried out in Closed Source Software (CSS) development. As testing and verification require a good deal of resources in OSS, it is necessary to have ways to assess and improve OSS testing processes. This paper provides a set of testing guidelines and issues that OSS developers can use to decide which testing techniques make most sense for their OSS products. This paper 1) provides a checklist that helps OSS developers identify the most useful testing techniques according to the main characteristics of their products, and 2) outlines a proposal for a method that helps assess the maturity of OSS testing processes. The method is a proposal of a Maturity Model for testing processes (called OSS-TMM). To show its usefulness, the authors apply the method to seven real-life projects. Specifically, the authors apply the method to BusyBox, Apache Httpd, and Eclipse Test & Performance Tools Platform to show how the checklist supports and guides the testing process of these OSS products.
