A novel space shift keying (SSK) multiple–input multiple–output (MIMO) technique based on Steiner triple system is proposed and analyzed in this article. SSK attracted considerable research interest in the past few years driven by the several promised inherent advantages including low error probability, low computational complexity and a very simple hardware implementation with very low cost and power consumption. Yet, the spectral efficiency of SSK increases with a base two logarithm of the number of transmit antennas and high data rates are only viable with a massive and impractical number of transmit antennas. Alternatively, generalized SSK (GSSK) scheme is considered, where a combination of antennas is activated at each time instant. GSSK promises the use of arbitrary number of transmit antennas not necessarily a power of two integer. Also, GSSK can attain high data rate with low number of transmit antennas at the cost of substantial degradation in the error performance. In this study, a Steiner triple system is utilized to propose a tailored SSK scheme with substantial reduction in the required number of transmit antennas, without compromising the error probability. It is shown that the proposed Steiner–SSK (S–SSK) MIMO system achieves almost identical error performance to a conventional SSK system but with nearly 90% reduction in the number of transmit antennas. As well, the average bit error rate (ABER) of S–SSK is shown to outperform GSSK by at least 3dB. It is also reported that a S–SSK system accomplishes significant reduction in hardware cost, power consumption, and computational complexity as compared to conventional SSK scheme. Yet, GSSK is shown to marginally outperforms S–SSK in these metrics as it requires smaller number of transmit antennas per a target spectral efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soft-input soft-output (SISO) detector for the iterative detection and decoding of coded spatial modulation (SM) signals needs to compute the extrinsic bit log-likelihood ratio (LLR) associated with each detected bit. The maximum logarithmic maximum a posteriori (max-log-MAP) detector is known to perform closely to the optimal logarithmic maximum a posteriori (log-MAP) detector with much lower computational complexity. In this paper, we first apply several mathematical tricks to derive a new and low-complexity algorithm for the max-log-MAP detector. The proposed algorithm features a new tree pruning technique to visit few lattice points and a smart list administration technique to retain a max-log-MAP detector. By following the proposed algorithm, we then design a hardware architecture for SISO detection of coded SM signals over the scenario of 64-QAM symbols, 8 transmit antennas, and 4 receive antennas. Under the TSMC 40 nm CMOS technology, the VLSI implementation results reveal that our architecture requires 46.4K gates and leads to detection throughput 450 Mbps, while operating at clock frequency 400 MHz and consuming power 46 mW. 5G millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems enable exciting new applications by significantly reducing the latency and increasing the data rate. However, this comes at a large computational cost, which results in long latency and large energy consumption. In this work, we aim to address this challenge in the problem of channel estimation of such systems through a set of algorithm-hardware co-optimizations. First of all, we employed a model-based neural network to improve the rate of convergence. We also optimized the neural network and achieved improved loss while using approximately the same number of operations. Furthermore, we were able to reduce the computational complexity through the use of sparsity inherent in mmWave channels. The proposed neural network for the channel estimation scales the computational complexity by more than two orders. Based on these innovations, we implemented a channel estimation subsystem on Zynq 7020 FPGA. Contemporary Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices in general and Internet-of-Vehicles (IoV) networks in specific are taking the benefits from using full-duplex (FD) communication with the help of relay nodes to facilitate data transmission. However, self-interference between transmit and receive antennas at the relay node may cause big trouble if self-interference cancellation (SIC) is not applied. In this paper, a rigorous analysis on the performance of FD two-way relay networks (FDTWRNs) for IoV applications under imperfect conditions is provided. Different from earlier studies on the performance of FDTWRNs where one or two imperfect factors were considered, this work simultaneously takes into account many practical issues in the implementation of the IoV networks at the physical layer, including errors in channel state information at all channel links, imperfect SIC and transceiver hardware impairment at all nodes. For relaying protocol, we consider amplify-and-forward with both fixed-gain (FG) and variable-gain (VG) protocols. The exact closed-form expressions (in terms of the system parameters) of key performance factors such as signal-to-interference-plus-noise-distortion-and-error ratio (SINER), outage probability (OP), achievable data rate (ADR), and average symbol error probabilities (ASEP) of the considered system over Rayleigh fading channels and under the combined effect of imperfect CSI, SIC, and transceiver hardware are derived mathematically using probabilistic model analysis. The correctness of the analysis is then verified by Monte Carlo simulations. Drawing upon both analytical and numerical findings, the efficacy of the FDTWRNs under consideration is meticulously and comprehensively assessed in comparison to its performance in ideal conditions characterized by one or multiple critical factors. The disparity between perfect and imperfect scenarios serves as a valuable metric for appraising the practical viability of the considered FDTWRNs when deployed in practical IoV networks. The design of integrated radar-communication (IRC) systems is seen as a promising solution to alleviate the congestion of spectrum resource in recent years. In this paper, we propose a joint design of antenna selection and transmit beamformer for IRC systems to realize the dual operations of radar and communications. Specifically, we propose a joint model that achieves a trade-off between minimizing the total number of antennas for IRC and suppressing the peak sidelobe level (PSL) of overall transmit beampattern with well-controlled mainlobe ripples. Unlike the existing schemes that focus on individual beamformer design with varying sparse array configurations, we impose a group sparsity on the beamforming matrix and jointly optimize multiple beamformers to obtain a common sparse array for the constellation of all communication symbols. To solve the resulting non-convex problem, we employ the alternating direction method of multipliers to split the original problem into parallel subproblems which are then solved iteratively. Simulation results illustrate the superiority of the proposed method over the conventional approaches in obtaining a lower PSL using fewer antennas with dual functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system, each block of data bits is mapped to a set of spatially multiplexed (SMX) symbols and an index of transmit antenna combination (TAC) of active antennas. The difficulty for the GenSM MIMO receiver is to detect the SMX symbols and TAC index simultaneously. Recently, we applied the conventional sphere decoding algorithm (SDA) successively to achieve the exact maximum likelihood detection (MLD) of GenSM MIMO signals. The SDA scheme suffers from variable computational complexity and leads to hardware detectors with variable throughput rate. Instead, fixed-complexity tree search algorithms, e.g., reduced fixed sphere decoding (rFSD), with nearly MLD performance are employed to facilitate hardware implementation. Here, we propose to apply the rFSD successively and design a hardware architecture for detecting GenSM MIMO signals under the scenario of 5 transmit antennas, 2 transmit radio frequency chains, 4 receive antennas, and 64-QAM SMX symbols. The VLSI implementation results under the TSMC 90nm CMOS technology reveal that our architecture requires 276.7K gates and provides detection throughput 1.613 Gbps, while operating at 322.6 MHz. This article proposes a power scalable beam-oriented digital predistortion (PSBO-DPD) architecture suitable for linearizing PAs in compact hybrid massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitters, without the need to implement a dedicated observation path for each PA. Based on an assumption that all PAs are similar, the feedback configuration for only one PA is sufficient to acquire the nonlinear information of PAs in a given subarray, which are driven at different power levels due to amplitude beamforming. Therefore, the PSBO-DPD resolves the deficiency of current DPD techniques in hybrid beamforming array by estimating the output signal of each PA from the only captured output signal from one PA to construct the main beam signal of the subarray. The predistorter is identified based on the estimated main beam signal and the input signal driving the subarray. To estimate the outputs of each PA efficiently, a power scalable cascade PA model is proposed to reduce the computational complexity and associated overhead in terms of cost and energy consumption. Measurements on a 4-element antenna array with up to 100 MHz bandwidth signal are carried out to validate and bench mark the proposed PSBO-DPD against the existing DPD technique in hybrid massive MIMO transmitters. In this paper, we consider a wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) full-duplex relaying (FDR) network, where a source node communicates with a destination node via the help of a decode-and-forward (DF) relay node. This relay node has the capability of harvesting the energy from radio frequency (RF) signals, in particular, from the source node via time-switching energy harvesting protocol. To enhance the quality of transmission, diversity techniques are applied at both transmitter and receiver. Specifically, transmit antenna selection (TAS) and maximal ratio transmission (MRT) schemes are employed at the transmitter, while both selection combining (SC) and maximal ratio combining (MRC) techniques are considered at the destination node. The main contribution of this paper is an in-depth performance and optimal analysis of the time-switching energy harvesting (EH) protocol by deriving the closed-form expressions of outage probability (OP), system throughput, and symbol error probability (SEP) of the considered system over Rayleigh fading channel and then solving the optimization problem of EH duration, where the instantaneous throughput is used as the objective function. It is also shown in this paper that although a portion of signal is used for power transfer, the obtained diversity gain of this system is still equal to the minimum number of the antennas configured at the source or at the destination. Media based modulation (MBM) is expected to be a prominent modulation scheme, which has access to the high data rate by using radio frequency (RF) mirrors and fewer transmit antennas. Associated with multiuser multiple input multiple output (MIMO), the MBM scheme achieves better performance than other conventional multiuser MIMO schemes. In this paper, the massive MIMO uplink is considered and a conjunctive MBM transmission scheme for each user is employed. This conjunctive MBM transmission scheme gathers aggregate MBM signals in multiple continuous time slots, which exploits the structured sparsity of these aggregate MBM signals. Under this kind of scenario, a multiuser detector with low complexity based on the compressive sensing (CS) theory to gain better detection performance is proposed. This detector is developed from the greedy sparse recovery technique compressive sampling matching pursuit (CoSaMP) and exploits not only the inherently distributed sparsity of MBM signals but also the structured sparsity of multiple aggregate MBM signals. By exploiting these sparsity, the proposed CoSaMP based multiuser detector achieves reliable detection with low complexity. Massive MIMO systems were utilized in overlay Cognitive Radio (CR) networks to allow simultaneous primary and secondary data transmission while enhancing the spectral efficiency. However, the precoder design of a massive MIMO system especially in the overlay CR paradigm usually has a trade-off between achieved data rate and complexity. In this paper, the precoder design for overlay Cognitive Radio (CR) massive MIMO system is introduced, where a two-stage precoder that accommodates Transmit Antenna Selection (TAS) is proposed for the Secondary Base Station (SBS). The unselected antennas in the cognitive base station are proposed to be utilized to relay the data of the Primary Users (PUs) to maximize the network sum rate. The proposed precoder design for primary data aims to cancel the interference inflicted on Secondary Users (SUs) as a result of relaying the primary data. Moreover, a fast algorithm is proposed which aims to select and distribute the SBS antennas for primary and secondary data transmission to achieve better data and convergence rates, this algorithm is called Transmit Antenna Selection and Distribution (TASD). Simulation results show that the proposed precoders' design and the TASD algorithm enhance the total system sum rate (primary and secondary rates) compared to the conventional TAS (where the unselected antennas were not used to relay PUs' data). This enhancement was achieved by relaying primary data without affecting the rate of SUs. As a result, the computational time of the TASD algorithm is reduced by 52% compared to the full array case while the total sum rate of the algorithm is only 3% less than the full array scenario. Furthermore, the results in case of using a practical correlated channel proved the robustness of the proposed TASD algorithm, as it achieved nearly the same results compared to uncorrelated channels. This paper presents a fully integrated RF-powered temperature sensor with non-intermittent operation. The sensor is powered up wirelessly from a 915-MHz incident signal using a power-efficient RF energy harvester, uses a subthreshold ring oscillator that produces a highly temperature-dependent oscillation frequency acting as a temperature-to-frequency converter, and finally transfers the frequency-modulated signal to an external reader using back scattering. The power management circuits are eliminated in the designed sensor to arrive at a minimalistic design. For proper operation, a novel voltage regulator is developed that produces a relatively constant output voltage as the supply voltage of the ring oscillator for a large range of harvested input energy but allows the output voltage to change as a function of the temperature for added temperature sensitivity of the overall sensor. Power consumption of the proposed sensor is only 1.05~\mu\textW at room temperature, which enables continuous operation of the sensor from an incident energy of −16 dBm. The sensor is tested between −10 °C to 100 °C exhibiting a minimum sensitivity of 238 Hz/°C at −10 °C and a maximum sensitivity of 31.648 kHz/°C at 100 °C. The predicted temperature error is −2.6 °C to 1.3 °C using a two-point calibration within the range of 10 °C to 100 °C. With a conversion time of 25 ms, 0.046 °C (rms) resolution is achieved.
