Tree volatiles and pheromones produced by southern bark beetles were bioassayed for response by the clerid predatorThanasimus dubius (F.). Upwind flights in a laboratory olfactometer, modified from Visser (1976), were used to determine the attractiveness of compounds. Differences in response to a solvent control and pheromone treatment were tested for statistical significance using the Wilcoxon signed ranks test. Both sexes ofT. dubius responded to frontalin, ipsdienol, and a-pinene in a dose-dependent manner with different but overlapping concentration ranges. Strong differences between the sexes were observed in response totrans-verbenol, verbenone, andl-ß-pinene. Neither sex responded to ipsenol orendo-brevicomin.

AbstractAll four major southern pines can be killed by the southern pine beetle, but loblolly and shortleaf are much more susceptible than longleaf and slash. Oleoresin from more than 50 trees of each species was tested for composition and amount of monoterpenes and resin acids, viscosity, flow (rate, duration, and amount), and rate of crystallization. Discriminant function analyses were used to classify the loblolly and shortleaf trees as to probable resistance. The best classification used physical properties (total flow, flow rate, viscosity, time to crystallization). Supposedly resistant and susceptible trees were subjected to controlled attack, and the chemical and physical properties of four loblolly pines that survived natural attack were measured. Resistance is strongly related to the physical properties of the oleoresin, and can be predicted by these properties. Loblolly and shortleaf trees with “average” properties usually succumb to 100 or more attacks per sq. m of bark surface. Several trees classified as resistant survived a much higher rate of attack.

AbstractA population of the Douglas-fir cone moth, Barbara colfaxiana(Kft.), was studied on the Buckhead Seed Production Area, Lowell Ranger District, Willamette National Forest, Oregon, during 1971. Factors contributing to the mortality of B. colfaxianaare presented in a partial life table and discussed. The egg – instar I was identified as the critical age interval and resinosis the critical factor.

Feeding preferences in naive first instar and penultimate-final instar bagworm (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis)larvae were investigated using two choice tests. Naive first instar larvae showed a general (though not exclusive) preference for black willow (Salix nigra)over other hosts tested, regardless of the host of origin. Penultimate-final instar larvae showed strong preferences for the previous rearing host, suggesting induction of host preference; there was no evidence of host origin effects. The ability to discriminate among hosts is important if it is actually used to make host choices based on host quality. In bagworms, where host choices (if any) must be made by larvae in habitats where several hosts are often present, host discriminatory ability is likely important.

During 1971 a study was conducted to determine the amount of the various Douglasfir cone structures (bracts, scales, and seeds) consumed by the Douglas-fir cone moth, Barbara colfaxiana(Kft.), in the Buckhead Seed Production Area, Willamette National Forest, Oregon. It was not the intent of this study to develop a complete energy budget for B. colfaxiana, but rather to determine the number of calories consumed, on the average, by an individual during the larval stage. The behavior of the various larval instars has been discussed by Radcliffe (1952), Keen (1958), Hedlin (1960), and Nebeker (1977). The calorie was selected as the unit of measure due to its usefulness in modeling energy transfer from one component to another in the forest ecosystem.

The relative preference of adult Thanasimus dubius (F.) (Coleoptera: Cleridae) for two natural prey, the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., and the small (four-spined) southern pine engraver, Ips avulsus (Eichh.) (Scolytidae), and for a laboratory prey, the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (L.) (Bruchidae), was determined. Newly emerged, hungry T. dubius preferred the two natural prey over C. maculatus, but consumed I. avulsus and D. frontalis as encountered. A 7-day conditioning period did not affect the preference; all predators, when offered a choice of three prey species, preferred I. avulsus. Egg production was significantly lower for T. dubius fed C. maculatus, and egg viability was significantly lower for T. dubius reared on D. frontalis.

Three methods for estimating the field developmental time of the southern pine beetle were compared. The estimates by each of the 3 methods were found to agree at high temperatures. Depending on the season of the year and temperature extremes, Method I (1st appearance of a stage to the 1st appearance of the succeeding stage) over- or under-estimated the developmental time estimated by Method IT (date 50% of the population was observed in a stage to date 50% of the population was observed in the succeeding stage) and Method III (points where highest densities were observed in succeeding stages). The egg stage was found to last 8–27 days, the larval stage 10–62 days, and the pupal stage 7–26 days, depending upon mean temperature. The range of temperatures observed in the field was between 4° and 28°C.

Larval head capsule widths, and number of instars of the southern pine beetles found during the summer and winter in Mississippi are compared with those of beetles from Texas, Georgia, and Virginia. Four instars occur in all populations. Head capsules of winter larvae in Mississippi are significantly larger (P<0.05) than those of summer larvae. In addition, summer larvae from Mississippi are significantly smaller (P<0.05) than those of beetles from Texas, Georgia, and Virginia.
