External fixation is an essential surgical technique for treating trauma, limb lengthening and deformity correction, however infection is common, with infection rates ranging from 4.5 to 100% of cases. Throughout the literature researchers and clinicians have highlighted a relationship between excessive movement of the pin and skin and an increase in the patient’s risk of infection, however, currently no studies have addressed this role of pin-movement on pin-site wounds. This preliminary study describes a novel in vitro pin-site model, developed using a full-thickness human skin equivalent (HSE) model in conjunction with a bespoke mechanical system which simulates pin-movement. The effect of pin-movement on the wound healing response of the skin equivalents was assessed by measuring the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Six human skin equivalent models were divided into three test groups: no pin as the control, static pin-site wound and dynamic pin-site wound (n= 3). On day 3 concentrations of IL-1α and IL-8 showed a significant increase compared to the control when a static fixation pin was implanted into the skin equivalent (p< 0.05) and (p< 0.005) respectively. Levels of IL-1α and IL-8 increased further in the dynamic sample compared to the static sample (p< 0.05) and (p< 0.0005). This study demonstrates for the first time the application of HSE model to study external-fixation pin-movement in vitro. The results of this study demonstrated pin-movement has a negative effect on soft-tissue wound-healing, supporting the anecdotal evidence reported in the literature, however further analysis of wound heading would be required to verify this hypothesis.

A novel approach for a delay line interferometer (DLI) based on transmission Bragg scattering is proposed. We have numerically and experimentally demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that a Bragg grating (BG) can deliver the functionality of a DLI in its transmission mode along a single common interfering optical path, instead of the conventional DLI implementation with two interfering optical paths. As a proof of concept, phase-modulated fiber BGs have been designed and fabricated, showing the desired functionality in the transmission mode of the BG. The proposed approach is applicable to any kind of BG technology, such as volume BGs, dielectric mirrors, silicon photonics, and other optical waveguide-based Bragg structures.

A novel low-cost, compact, assembly-free and sensitive optical fiber curvature sensor is presented. This device consists of an off-axis positive refractive index modified zone (PRIMZ), induced by a direct femtosecond laser, written in a single-mode fiber (SMF) core. The PRIMZ transforms the original SMF section into a few-mode fiber (FMF). As a result, the whole fiber forms an assembly-free “SMF-FMF-SMF” sandwich Mach–Zehnder interferometer. When the device is bent, a direction-dependent spectral shift of the interference pattern is produced. The sensitivity of the sensor is up to 2.53 and 2.24  nm/m^−1 for the 0° and 180° orientations in a wide bend range (from 0 to 4  m^−1). In addition, the device is immune to the surrounding refractive index and has a low-temperature crosstalk, which makes it very attractive for practical structural monitoring applications.

Optical Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) are useful components in a variety of optical applications, including optical modulation; signal processing; and physical, chemical, and biological sensing. We introduce here a novel, assembly-free all-in-fiber-core MZI, which is directly written with a femtosecond laser. By introducing a positive refractive index-modified zone in half of the fiber core, the original single-mode fiber section is converted into a few-mode fiber section, where a strong coupling between the two lowest-order guided modes is generated, resulting in a well-defined interference spectrum in transmission. This device promises many significant advantages over existing approaches such as ease of fabrication, stability, small insertion loss, robustness extremely broad operating bandwidth, and precise and controllable cavity lengths. These advantages make this device strikingly attractive with the potential for extensive adoption in fiber communications, signal processing, sensors, and laser wavelength control.

We demonstrate here an extremely simple, compact, and robust refractive index (RI) probe sensor based on a femtosecond-laser induced refractive index-modified dot (RIMD) fabricated near the end face of a single-mode fiber. The RIMD and the fiber end face form a Fabry–Perot interferometer, which is highly sensitive to surrounding RI. The fabrication process of the RIMD involves only one step and takes ∼0.1  s, which is extremely short, compared with other techniques. The proposed sensor exhibits an ultra-high sensitivity of ∼2523.2  dB/RIU at an RI of 1.435, which is one to two orders of magnitude higher than that of the existing intensity-modulated RI sensors. Moreover, the proposed sensor has the distinct advantages of compact size (∼50  μm), easy fabrication, and no temperature cross-sensitivity. The advantages of the device make it a promising candidate for applications in designing highly sensitive sensors in a biochemical and environmental measurement field.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive three-dimensional imaging system that is capable of producing high resolution in-vivo images. OCT is approved for use in clinical trials in Japan, USA and Europe. For OCT to be used effectively in a clinical diagnosis, a method of standardisation is required to assess the performance across different systems. This standardisation can be implemented using highly accurate and reproducible artefacts for calibration at both installation and throughout the lifetime of a system. Femtosecond lasers can write highly reproducible and highly localised micro-structured calibration artefacts within a transparent media. We report on the fabrication of high quality OCT calibration artefacts in fused silica using a femtosecond laser. The calibration artefacts were written in fused silica due to its high purity and ability to withstand high energy femtosecond pulses. An Amplitude Systemes s-Pulse Yb:YAG femtosecond laser with an operating wavelength of 1026 nm was used to inscribe three dimensional patterns within the highly optically transmissive substrate. Four unique artefacts have been designed to measure a wide variety of parameters, including the points spread function (PSF), modulation transfer function (MTF), sensitivity, distortion and resolution - key parameters which define the performance of the OCT. The calibration artefacts have been characterised using an optical microscope and tested on a swept source OCT. The results demonstrate that the femtosecond laser inscribed artefacts have the potential of quantitatively and qualitatively validating the performance of any OCT system.

As optical coherence tomography (OCT) becomes widespread, validation and characterization of systems becomes important. Reference standards are required to qualitatively and quantitatively measure the performance between difference systems. This would allow the performance degradation of the system over time to be monitored. In this report, the properties of the femtosecond inscribed structures from three different systems for making suitable OCT characterization artefacts (phantoms) are analyzed. The parameter test samples are directly inscribed inside transparent materials. The structures are characterized using an optical microscope and a swept-source OCT. The high reproducibility of the inscribed structures shows high potential for producing multi-modality OCT calibration and characterization phantoms. Such that a single artefact can be used to characterize multiple performance parameters such the resolution, linearity, distortion, and imaging depths.

We present a compact, portable and low cost generic interrogation strain sensor system using a fibre Bragg grating configured in transmission mode with a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) light source and a GaAs photodetector embedded in a polymer skin. The photocurrent value is read and stored by a microcontroller. In addition, the photocurrent data is sent via Bluetooth to a computer or tablet device that can present the live data in a real time graph. With a matched grating and VCSEL, the system is able to automatically scan and lock the VCSEL to the most sensitive edge of the grating. Commercially available VCSEL and photodetector chips are thinned down to 20 m and integrated in an ultra-thin flexible optical foil using several thin film deposition steps. A dedicated micro mirror plug is fabricated to couple the driving optoelectronics to the fibre sensors. The resulting optoelectronic package can be embedded in a thin, planar sensing sheet and the host material for this sheet is a flexible and stretchable polymer. The result is a fully embedded fibre sensing system - a photonic skin. Further investigations are currently being carried out to determine the stability and robustness of the embedded optoelectronic components.

We present a comprehensive study of the transmission characteristics of all-fiber Sagnac interferometers (FSIs) based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). Analytic and numerical models have been developed for the design and characterization of FBG FSIs that incorporate gratings of arbitrary fringe structure. The transmission, phase, and time delay responses of several representative configurations that incorporate uniform-period and chirped gratings with and without apodization have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. Excellent agreement between the theoretical results and real device characteristics has been found in all cases. Our study clearly reveals that fiber grating-based FSIs offer potentially significant practical advantages not only for conversion of the reflective response of the grating into a transmissive response without loss but also by providing near-zero dispersion in the transmission bands, which offers attractive prospects for filtering components in high-speed wavelength-division multiplexing transmission systems.

We report the first experimental demonstration of single transmissive fiber Bragg grating implementation of a first-order optical differentiation. The device has been designed and fabricated, and the experimental results show a good performance over an operational bandwidth of ∼2  nm.

An approach to pulse shaping using a phase-modulated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in transmission is proposed and designed. We show that phase-modulated FBGs can provide transmission responses suitable for pulse shaping applications, offering important technological feasibility benefits, since the coupling strength remains basically uniform in the grating. Moreover, this approach retains the substantial advantages of FBGs in transmission, such as optimum energy efficiency, no requirement for an optical circulator, and robustness against fabrication errors.

A novel (to our knowledge) kind of Airy-based pulse with an invariant propagation in lossy dispersive media is proposed. The basic principle is based on an optical energy trade-off between different parts of the pulse caused by the chromatic dispersion, which is used to compensate the attenuation losses of the propagation medium. Although the ideal concept of the proposed pulses implies infinite pulse energy, the numerical simulations show that practical finite energy pulses can be designed to obtain a partially invariant propagation over a finite distance of propagation.

We demonstrate optically tunable dispersion compensators based on pumping fiber Bragg gratings made in Er/Yb codoped fiber. The tunable dispersion for a chirped grating and also a uniform-period grating was successfully demonstrated in the experiment. The dispersion of the chirped grating was tuned from 900 to 1990?ps/nm and also from −600 to −950?ps/nm in the experiment.

A 1.2 μm (height) × 125 μm (depth) × 500 μm (length) microslot along a fiber Bragg grating was engraved across the optical fiber by femtosecond laser patterning and chemical etching. By filling epoxy in the slot and subsequent UV curing, a hybrid waveguide grating structure with a polymer core and glass cladding was fabricated. The obtained device is highly thermally responsive with linear coefficient of 211 pm/°C.

We propose and demonstrate novel virtual Gires-Tournois (GT) etalons based on fiber gratings. By introducing an additional phase modulation in wideband linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings, we have successfully generated GT resonance with only one grating. This technique can simplify the fabrication procedure while retaining the normal advantages of distributed etalons, including their full compatibility with optical fiber, low insertion loss, and low cost. Such etalons can be used as dispersion compensation devices in optical transmission systems.

Using an optical biosensor based on a dual-peak long-period fiber grating, we have demonstrated the detection of interactions between biomolecules in real time. Silanization of the grating surface was successfully realized for the covalent immobilization of probe DNA, which was subsequently hybridized with the complementary target DNA sequence. It is interesting to note that the DNA biosensor was reusable after being stripped off the hybridized target DNA from the grating surface, demonstrating a function of multiple usability.

We propose and demonstrate a single fiber Bragg grating-based Gires-Tournois (GT) etalon, which is realized by applying a complex apodization profile on a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating. Such a GT etalon not only has a simplified fabrication procedure but also can operate in dual directions.

We propose and demonstrate a novel optically tunable dynamic dispersion-compensation device with coupled-cavity etalon structure. Experimentally, it was achieved with an all-fiber coupled-cavity etalon made in an Er?Yb codoped fiber pumped by a 980-nm laser diode. The dispersion was tuned from ?300to+400?ps?nm in the experiment. The potential advantages of such optically tunable dispersion compensators include fast response time and remotely controllable operation.

We present a novel concept of a tailored Gires–Tournois etalon structure and show that such a device is useful for the fabrication of a dispersion-slope compensator with an almost arbitrary dispersion profile and also with tunability in the dispersion slope.

The recent expansion of clinical applications for optical coherence tomography (OCT) is driving the development of approaches for consistent image acquisition. There is a simultaneous need for time-stable, easy-to-use imaging targets for calibration and standardization of OCT devices. We present calibration targets consisting of three-dimensional structures etched into nanoparticle-embedded resin. Spherical iron oxide nanoparticles with a predominant particle diameter of 400 nm were homogeneously dispersed in a two part polyurethane resin and allowed to harden overnight. These samples were then etched using a precision micromachining femtosecond laser with a center wavelength of 1026 nm, 100kHz repetition rate and 450 fs pulse duration. A series of lines in depth were etched, varying the percentage of inscription energy and speed of the translation stage moving the target with respect to the laser. Samples were imaged with a dual wavelength spectral-domain OCT system (=800nm, 180nm, and =1325nm, 100nm) and point-spread function of nanoparticles within the target was measured.

We review the state-of-the-art in photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF) based mechanical sensing. We first introduce how the unique properties of PCF can benefit Bragg grating based temperature insensitive pressure and transverse load sensing. Then we describe how the latest developments in mPOF Bragg grating technology can enhance optical fiber pressure sensing. Finally we explain how the integration of specialty fiber sensor technology with bio-compatible polymer based micro-technology provides great opportunities for fiber sensors in the field of healthcare.
