We describe how ultrastrong interactions in optomechanical systems can be used to force the system ground state to evolve into an arbitrary quantum state of mechanical motion in a completely controlled and deterministic manner. If the target quantum state is a superposition of N Fock states, it can be obtained by applying in single-step N classical optical signals of different frequencies for a common time interval. This protocol can be applied to various strongly interacting quantum systems as trapped ions beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime and cavity QED into the ultrastrong coupling regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ultrastrong-coupling regime, where the atom-cavity coupling rate reaches a considerable fraction of the cavity or atom transition frequencies, has been reported in a flux qubit superconducting quantum circuit coupled to an on-chip coplanar resonator. In this regime situations may arise where the resonator field X = â + ât acquires a nonzero expectation value in the system ground state. We demonstrate that, in this case, the parity symmetry of an additional artificial atom with an even potential is broken by the interaction with the resonator. Such a mechanism is analogous to the Higgs mechanism where the gauge symmetry of the weak force's gauge bosons is broken by the nonzero vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field. The results presented here open the way to controllable experiments on symmetry-breaking mechanisms induced by nonzero vacuum expectation values. Moreover, the mechanism proposed here can be used as a probe of the ground-state macroscopic coherence emerging from quantum phase transitions with vacuum degeneracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the extracavity quantum vacuum radiation generated by a sudden switch on and off of the vacuum Rabi frequency of a single two-level system coupled to a single cavity mode in the strong and ultrastrong coupling regime. Dissipation is described by including the qubit-resonator coupling in the derivation of the master equation. The output stream of photons and their second-order correlation functions are calculated by exploiting a recently developed input-output formulation of resonators valid for arbitrary light-matter couplings. The obtained output photon correlations provide direct information on the quantum correlations among the virtual excitations of the dressed vacuum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
