Graphical Abstract:

Herein, we successfully developed a thread-based analytical device (μTAD) for simultaneous immunosensing of two biomolecules with attomolar sensitivity by using a photothermal effect. A photothermal effect exploits a strong light-to-heat energy conversion of plasmonic metallic nanoparticles at localized surface plasmon resonance. The key innovation is to utilize the cotton thread to realize this sensor and the use of chitosan modification for enhancing the microfluidic properties, for improving the efficiency of photothermal conversion, and for sensor stability. The developed μTAD sensor consists of (i) a sample zone, (ii) a conjugation zone coated with gold nanoparticles bound with an antibody (AuNPs-Ab2), and (iii) a test zone immobilized with a capture antibody (anti-Ab1). The prepared μTAD is assembled in a custom three-dimensional (3D) printed device which holds the laser for illumination and the thermometer for readout. The 3D-printed supportive device enhances signal response by focusing light and localizing the heat generated. For proof of concept, simultaneous sensing of two key stress and inflammation biomarkers, namely, cortisol and interleukin-6 (IL-6), are monitored using this technique. Under optimization, this device exhibited a detection linear range of 2.0–14.0 ag/mL (R2= 0.9988) and 30.0–360.0 fg/mL (R2= 0.9942) with a detection limit (LOD) of 1.40 ag/mL (∼3.86 amol/L) and 20.0 fg/mL (∼950.0 amol/L) for cortisol and IL-6, respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of both biomolecules in human samples indicated recoveries in the range of 98.8%–102.88% with the highest relative standard deviation being 3.49%, offering great accuracy and precision. These results are the highest reported sensitivity for these analytes using an immunoassay method. Our PT-μTAD strategy is therefore a promising approach for detecting biomolecules in resource-limited point-of-care settings.

There is a need to develop cost-effective and compact solutions for Smart Home monitoring. Existing monitoring systems depend on continuous power sources to support the operation of sensors and electronics modules used therein. In this article, we present three simple battery-free, Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID)-based solutions for real-time monitoring of the orientation of an object using a tilt sensor based on a metallic bead, an entry detection system utilizing a reed switch-based proximity sensor, and a temperature crossing event detection using a thermistor. All sensors are integrated with individual passive RFID tags. The proposed sensing mechanisms were also combined to achieve multi-modal logic sensing operation. Active events (change in position, motion, and temperature) would alter the state of the corresponding flexible RFID sensors to transmit warning signals wirelessly to an RFID reader, realizing a simple RFID-based Smart Home network. The proposed platform has been validated through extensive simulation and actual measurements.

Abstract: One-dimensional substrates such as textile fibers and threads offer an excellent opportunity to realize sensors, actuators, energy harvesters/storage, microfluidics, and advanced therapies. A new generation of wearable devices made from smart threads offer ultimate flexibility and seamless integration with the human body and the garments that adorn them. This article reviews the state of the art in thread-based wearable devices for monitoring human activity and performance, diagnoses and manages medical conditions, and provides new and improved human–machine interfaces. In the area of new and improved human–machine interfaces, it discusses novel computing platforms enabled using thread-based electronics and batteries/capacitors. For physical activity monitoring, a review of wearable devices using strain sensing threads is provided. Thread-based devices that can monitor health from biological fluids such as total analysis systems, wearable sweat sensing patches, and smart sutures/smart bandages are also included. The article concludes with an outlook on how fibers and threads are expected to impact and revolutionize the next generation of wearable devices. Knowledge gaps and emerging opportunities are presented. Graphic Abstract:

Oxygen is essential to cell survival and tissue function. Not surprisingly, ischemia resulting from myocardial infarction induces cell death and tissue necrosis. Attempts to regenerate myocardial tissue with cell based therapies exacerbate the hypoxic stress by further increasing the metabolic burden. In consequence, implanted tissue engineered cardiac tissues suffer from hypoxia-induced cell death. Here, we report on the generation of oxygen-generating hydrogels composed of calcium peroxide (CPO) laden gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA). CPO-GelMA hydrogels released significant amounts of oxygen for over a period of 5 days under hypoxic conditions (1% O2). The released oxygen proved sufficient to relieve the metabolic stress of cardiac side population cells that were encapsulated within CPO-GelMA hydrogels. In particular, incorporation of CPO in GelMA hydrogels strongly enhanced cell viability as compared to GelMA-only hydrogels. Importantly, CPO-based oxygen generation reduced cell death by limiting hypoxia-induced necrosis. The current study demonstrates that CPO based oxygen-generating hydrogels could be used to transiently provide oxygen to cardiac cells under ischemic conditions. Therefore, oxygen generating materials such as CPO-GelMA can improve cell-based therapies aimed at treatment or regeneration of infarcted myocardial tissue.

In many applications such as gravimetric sensing, there is a need to rapidly estimate the center resonant frequency of the sensor system. This paper proposes and compares different quantized analog compressive sensing approaches for rapid frequency estimation. In particular, we discuss (a) Atomic norm Soft Thresholding - Semidefinite Programming (AST-SDP), (b) Atomic norm Soft Thresholding - Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (AST-ADMM) and (c) Superfast Line Spectral Estimation (LSE) algorithms. As a result of this comparison we report that Superfast LSE achieves a good trade-off between computational speed, quantization, and error in frequency estimation among the three approaches. We further compare the compressive sensing approaches to several classical methods such as the Prony’s algorithm and the Pisarenko’s algorithm and show that compressive sensing based approaches remain robust to higher quantization errors. Finally, experimental results are shown for a quartz crystal and a MEMS based gravimetric sensor. Frequency measurement results with the quartz crystal show that a resolution of 0.1 ppm RMSE is achieved with the compressed sensing approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deep eutectic solvent (DES) gel electrolytes have recently emerged as promising alternatives to ionic liquid- or water-based gels for “ionic skin” sensor applications. Researchers have also been exploring the effects that varying amounts of water may have on the local hydrogen bonding environment within a few model DES systems. In this study, the physical properties and ionic conductivities of biopolymer (gelatin)-supported gels featuring two established DESs and three DES/water mixture formulations are investigated and compared. The DES/water mixtures are formed by combining choline chloride with one of three organic hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), ethylene glycol, glycerol, or 1,2-propanediol, in a 1:2 molar ratio, together with a controlled amount of water, 25 mol % (approximately 5–6 wt % water). For the same fixed gelatin content (20 wt %), DES/water mixture gel Young’s modulus values are found to be tunable based on the organic HBD identity, increasing 6-fold from 7 (1,2-propanediol) to 42 (glycerol) kPa. Furthermore, large differences are observed in the resulting gel properties when water has been intentionally added to well-studied DESs. Coformulation with water is found to increase ethylene glycol-based DES gel toughness, measured via tensile testing, from 23 to 68 kJ/m3while simultaneously boosting gel room temperature ionic conductivity from 3.3 to 5.2 mS/cm. These results highlight the multiple roles that controlled amounts of water in DES can play within gelatin-supported DES/mixture gel electrolytes, such as influencing gelatin self-assembly and reducing local viscosity to promote facile ion transport.

Physically intimate, real-time monitoring of human biomarkers is becoming increasingly important to modern medicine and patient wellness. Such monitoring is possible due to advances in soft and flexible materials, devices and bioelectronics systems. Compared to other flexible platforms, multifilament textile fibers or threads offer superior flexibility, material diversity, and simple ambient processing to realize a wide range of flexible devices such as sensors, electronics, and microfluidics. In this paper, we realize unique flexible transistors on threads and interconnect them to realize logic gates and small-scale integrated circuits. Compared to prior textile-based transistors, the proposed thread-based transistors (TBTs) are realized with a readily shaped, colloidally dispersed gel consisting of silica nanoparticles and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMI TFSI) ionic liquid for all-around electrolyte gating of a carbon nanotube (CNT) semiconducting network assembled on the thread. We interconnect TBTs with thread-based electrochemical sensors (TBEs) to realize an all-thread based multiplexed diagnostic device. All-thread based platforms are thin, highly flexible and conformal, allowing them to be worn directly on the skin without any polymeric substrate, or sutured transdermally using a needle.

This paper studies the process scalability of pulse-mode CMOS circuits for analog 2-D convolution in computer vision systems. A simple, scalable architecture for an integrate and fire neuron is presented for implementing weighted addition of pulse-frequency modulated (PFM) signals. Sources of error are discussed and modeled in a detailed behavioral simulation and compared with equivalent transistor-level simulations. Next, the design of a 180-nm PFM chip with programmable weights is presented, and full image convolutions are demonstrated with the analog hardware. Preliminary chip measurements for a 45-nm implementation are also included to demonstrate process scalability. Design considerations for porting this architecture to nanometer processes, including FinFET technologies, are then discussed. This work proposes a novel translinear principle based on time domain processing of signals. The exponential relationship between voltage and time in an RC circuit is exploited to implement a logarithmic voltage-to-time converter and an exponential time-to-voltage converter. These circuits are the time domain analogs of the voltage mode translinear circuits that exploit the exponential relationship between current and voltage in BJTs and subthreshold MOS transistors. Just as Kirchoff's voltage laws provide a natural form of addition for the voltage-mode translinear principle, the progression of time can also be a natural source of addition for the proposed time-mode analog of this principle. In this work a time-mode adder circuit is used to realize a translinear principle in time. This paper describes the theory behind this time-mode translinear principle. Furthermore, the design of nonlinear circuit functions, e.g., multiplication and power law, based on the time-mode translinear principle is described. Simulation and measurement results for a two-input single quadrant multiplier are presented. The chip was fabricated in a 180 nm CMOS process with simulation results agreeing closely with experimental results. This paper presents a 60-dB gain bulk-driven Miller OTA operating at 0.25-V power supply in the 130-nm digital CMOS process. The amplifier operates in the weak-inversion region with input bulk-driven differential pair sporting positive feedback source degeneration for transconductance enhancement. In addition, the distributed layout configuration is used for all the transistors to mitigate the effect of halo implants for higher output impedance. Combining these two approaches, we experimentally demonstrate a high gain of over 60-dB with just 18-nW power consumption from 0.25-V power supply. The use of enhanced bulk-driven differential pair and distributed layout can help overcome some of the constraints imposed by nanometer CMOS process for high performance analog circuits in weak inversion region. This paper presents the design and implementation of an analog-to-information converter (AIC) capable of Nyquist and compressed sensing modes of operation. The core of the AIC is a 10-bit edge-triggered charge-sharing SAR ADC with a figure of merit (FOM) of 55 fJ/conversion-step and Nyquist-sampling rate of 9.5 Msample/s. The integration of a pseudorandom clock generator enables compressed sensing operation via random sampling and subsequent asynchronous successive approximation conversion by the core ADC. The AIC allows complete reconstruction of a spectrum consisting of sparse single tones or sparse frequency bands using compressed sensing algorithms based on \ell{{1}}-minimization as well as \ell{{1,2}} regularization, which exploits group sparsity. Implemented in 90 nm CMOS, the prototype SAR ADC core achieves a maximum sample rate of 9.5 MS/s, an ENOB of 9.3 bits, and consumes 550 \muW from a 1.2 V supply. Measurement results of the AIC demonstrate an effective bandwidth of 25 MHz, which is 5\times greater than Nyquist-sampling rate with an improved effective FOM of 12.2 fJ/conversion-step for signals with sparse frequency support. An adaptive resolution (AR) asynchronous analog-to-digital converter (ADC) architecture is presented. Data compression is achieved by the inherent signal dependent sampling rate of the asynchronous architecture. An AR algorithm automatically varies the ADC quantizer resolution based on the rate of change of the input. This overcomes the trade-off between dynamic range and input bandwidth typically seen in asynchronous ADCs. A prototype ADC fabricated in a 0.18 \mum CMOS technology, and utilizing the subthreshold region of operation, achieves an equivalent maximum sampling rate of 50 kS/s, an SNDR of 43.2 dB, and consumes 25 \muW from a 0.7 V supply. A novel binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) demodulator architecture is presented. The design employs a phase frequency detector based phase-locked loop allowing for robust performance compared to prior art. Two different circuit implementations for the novel demodulator architecture are proposed. Based on theoretical analysis, the maximum data rate of the demodulator is derived to be 1/8th of the carrier frequency. For experimental validation, a prototype was implemented for a 13.56-MHz BPSK demodulator in a 0.5-µm CMOS technology. The circuit occupies 1 mm² chip area and consumes 3-mW power without any circuit optimization and can be further improved. Bit-error rate measurements have also been presented for a 20-kbs data rate. Topical administration of drugs in a timely manner according to the physiological need at the wound site can enhance the healing rate of chronic wounds. Herein, an electronic wound dressing that enables active topical drug delivery in response to electrically induced pH change is demonstrated for potential treatment of chronic wounds. In this platform, the pH of the dressing is controlled using an electrical field. This allows precise electrical control over the temporal profile of pH‐mediated drug release. This engineered dressing is comprised of microfabricated electrodes serving as anode and cathode, a pH sensitive hydrogel, and controlled electronic circuitry. The anode is coated with a pH sensitive poly(ethylene glycol)‐diacrylate/Laponite hydrogel layer containing drug loaded chitosan nanoparticles (ChPs). Applying a DC voltage between the electrodes results in a local change in pH near the electrodes. In basic environments found near the anode, the ChPs release their drug due to the dehydration process, while in acidic environments the release profile is negligible. Turning off the DC voltage results in immediate pH recovery and cessation of drug release. The biocompatibility of the dressing has also been confirmed—the pH shift resulting from application of DC voltage does not affect the wound pH significantly. This paper presents an electronic wound dressingmade of a pH‐responsive drug‐loaded hydrogel for treatment of chronic wounds. Local pH change is induced with the application of an electric field between built‐in electrodes. It demonstrates precise time controlled drug release and confirms biocompatibility and in vitro wound closure using this pH‐mediated electronic wound dressing.
