The variation between the ownership concentration, equity incentives of directors, executive compensation and board structure with respect to earnings timeliness and with firms' organizational complexity is investigated. It is found that ownership concentration, directors' and executives' equity-based incentives and outside directors' reputations vary inversely with earnings timeliness and that ownership concentration and directors' equity-based incentives increase with firm complexity.

Research into the role of publicly reported financial accounting data in the governance procedures of companies is presented. It is suggested that the literature gives mixed views about the risk-incentives tradeoff indicated by the classic principal-agent model. The use of individual performance evaluation in the annual incentive plans of CEOs is examined. Individual performance evaluation can involve discretion, subjectivity and both financial and non-financial performance criteria. An agency theory-based prediction points to an increase in individual performance evaluation along with the importance of growth opportunities relative to assets in place, length of product development and product life cycles, and noise in traditional financial measures. Use of proprietary compensation data shows individual performance evaluation to increase along with growth opportunities and product time horizon.

A study analyzes how the corporate ownership structure empirically affects technological innovations and tests the hypothesis that separately owned and controlled business enterprises are not as innovative as those with increased management ownership concentrations or substantial equity blocks owned by external investors. We study the role of individual CEOs in explaining corporate social responsibility (CSR) scores. We find that CEO fixed-effects explain 59% of the variation in CSR scores, whereas firm fixed-effects explains 23% of the variation in CSR scores. Specifically, firms led by materialistic CEOs have lower CSR scores, fewer strengths, and more weaknesses. Finally, we document that CSR scores in firms with non-materialistic CEOs are positively associated with accounting and stock price performance. In contrast, CSR scores in firms with materialistic CEOs are unrelated to profitability.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of critical velocity (CV) and isoperformance curves as an alternative to the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) two-mile running test. Seventy-eight men and women (mean +/- SE; age: 22.1 +/- 0.34 years; VO2(MAX): 46.1 +/- 0.82 mL/kg/min) volunteered to participate in this study. A VO2(MAX) test and four treadmill running bouts to exhaustion at varying intensities were completed. The relationship between total distance and time-to-exhaustion was tracked for each exhaustive run to determine CV and anaerobic running capacity. A VO2(MAX) prediction equation (Coefficient of determination: 0.805; Standard error of the estimate: 3.2377 mL/kg/min) was developed using these variables. Isoperformance curves were constructed for men and women to correspond with two-mile run times from APFT standards. Individual CV and anaerobic running capacity values were plotted and compared to isoperformance curves for APFT 2-mile run scores. Fifty-four individuals were determined to receive passing scores from this assessment. Physiological profiles identified from this procedure can be used to assess specific aerobic or anaerobic training needs. With the use of time-to-exhaustion as opposed to a time-trial format used in the two-mile run test, pacing strategies may be limited. The combination of variables from the CV test and isoperformance curves provides an alternative to standardized time-trial testing.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS REVIEW IS TO PROVIDE AN ANALYSIS OF STUDIES CONDUCTED ON BETA-ALANINE. THE REVIEW WILL COVER THE OPTIMAL DOSAGE OF BETA-ALANINE; ITS USE IN RESISTANCE TRAINING, INTERMITTENT, AND ENDURANCE-BASED EXERCISES; AND WHEN COMBINED WITH CREATINE IN TRAINED AND UNTRAINED INDIVIDUALS.

This article focuses on Detlev Mehlis, the German state prosecutor in charge of the international commission investigating the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri. Mehlis has worked his way up the power structure of Lebanese politics in his quest for the truth about who was behind the bomb that killed Hariri. Now his report on the case is due. The big question is whether he will point the finger of blame at Syria, which is widely believed to be behind the murder. Mehlis' temperament and record made him well suited to the job; he is clearly not without cunning or political instincts. Even if Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad himself is not implicated, that would not necessarily save his regime. The chaos that might follow could affect Syria's stability. In Lebanon itself, normal life has come to a standstill until Mehlis' report is released.
