Context.High-redshift ultra luminous infrared galaxies contribute the bulk of the cosmic IR background and are the best candidates for very massive galaxies in formation at $z>1.5$.

Aims.Our goal is to probe the populations of obscured and unobscured AGN investigating their optical-IR and X-ray properties as a function of X-ray flux, luminosity and redshift within a hard X-ray selected sample with wide multiwavelength coverage.

Objectives. The aim of the survey was to assess the prevalence of clinically diagnosed knee osteoarthritis (OA) in two general practice populations in the Wessex region (practice A: a deprived urban population and practice B: an affluent rural population) and to assess both conventional and complementary therapy use in these two populations.Methods. All patients over 55 yr with a clinical diagnosis of knee OA, as identified from the practice computerized records, were sent a questionnaire about their knee pain and their use of conventional and complementary treatments.Results. A total of 4566 patients over 55 yr were registered in the two practices. Of these, 828 (18.13%) had a clinical diagnosis of knee OA and 240 (29%) patients were asymptomatic at the time of survey. Physiotherapy was under-utilized with only 13.1% of patients having received either hospital- or GP-based physiotherapy. There was a high prevalence of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, being significantly more in the affluent population (P < 0.05). In the affluent population there were statistically more social class groups 1–3a; statistically more NSAIDs, glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate were also used. The median amount spent on complementary medicine per month was £5.00, with the affluent population spending significantly more (P < 0.05).Conclusions. In this population, physiotherapy is an under-utilized treatment for knee OA, in spite of its recommendation as first-line treatment in all guidelines. Complementary medicines and therapies are commonly used, particularly in affluent populations.

The efficacy of a muramidase‐released protein (MRP) and extracellular factor (EF) vaccine in preventing infection and disease in pigs challenged either with a homologous or a heterologous Streptococcus suisserotype 2 strain (MRP+EF+) was compared with the efficacy of a vaccine containing formalin‐killed bacterin of S suisserotype 2 (MRP+EF+). The enhancement of the immune response by different adjuvants (a water‐inoil emulsion [wo] and an aluminium hydroxide‐based adjuvant [AHJ) and their side effects were also studied. The MRP and EF were purified by affinity chromatography. Pigs were vaccinated twice at three weeks and six weeks of age and challenged intravenously with virulent S suisserotype 2 strains (MRP+EF+) at eight weeks of age. At challenge, the pigs vaccinated with MRP+EF/WO had high anti‐MRP and anti‐EF titres and were protected as effectively as pigs vaccinated with wo‐formulated vaccines with bacterin. Eight of the nine pigs survived the challenge and almost no clinical signs of disease were observed. The titres obtained with the MRP+EF/AH vaccine were low and only two of the five pigs were protected. Pigs vaccinated with either MRP or EF were less well protected; three of the four pigs died after challenge but the clinical signs of disease were significantly less severe than those observed in the placebo‐vaccinated pigs. The protective capacity of the bacterin/AH vaccine was very low, and the mortality among these pigs was as high as in the placebovaccinated pigs (80 per cent). Postmortem histological examination revealed meningitis, polyserositis and arthritis in the clinically affected pigs. The results demonstrate that a subunit vaccine containing both MRP and EF, formulated with the wo adjuvant, protected pigs against challenge with virulent S suistype 2 strains.

A semisynthetic antibody phage display library was used to select recombinant antibodies directed against surface components of a pathogenic strain of Streptococcus suis serotype 2 and against extracellular factor (EF), a protein known to be exclusively associated with pathogenic S. suis serotype 2 strains. Three distinct monoclonal phage antibodies directed against conformational epitopes of surface protein components of S. suis were selected. In addition, three different monoclonal phage antibodies were isolated that recognized EF. To isolate antibody fragments that recognize epitopes specific for a pathogenic S. suis serotype 2 strain, compared to a nonpathogenic serotype 2 strain, we applied a subtractive selection procedure. With this procedure, only one distinct phage antibody was found, and it was shown to be directed against EF. This demonstrates the selectivity of the applied procedure and confirms that EF is indeed differentially expressed by pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains. It also shows that EF is a very dominant antigen in phage antibody selections.

We developed three type-specific PCR assays for the rapid and sensitive detection of Streptococcus suis serotype 1 (plus 14), serotype 2 (plus 1/2), and serotype 9 strains in tonsillar specimens from pigs. The PCR primers were based on the sequences of type-specific capsular genes of S. suis serotype 1, 2, and 9 strains. We recently characterized a major part of the capsular biosynthesis (cps) locus of S. suis serotype 2. Here we extended these studies and characterized major parts of the cps loci of S. suis serotypes 1 and 9. Type-specific genes were identified by cross-hybridization experiments between the individual cps genes and chromosomal DNAs from the 35 different serotypes. Four genes of S. suis serotype 1 specifically hybridized with serotype 1 and 14 strains only. Five genes of S. suis serotype 2 specifically hybridized with serotype 2 and 1/2 strains only, and two genes of S. suis serotype 9 specifically hybridized with serotype 9 strains. Until now rapid and sensitive diagnostic tests were available only for pathogenic strains of serotype 2 and highly pathogenic strains of serotype 1. The serotype-specific PCR assays can therefore be useful tools for the identification of serotype 1, 14, 2, 1/2, and 9 strains both for diagnostic purposes and in epidemiological and transmission studies. Therefore, these tests may facilitate control and eradication programs.

To study the role of the capsule of Streptococcus suis serotype 2 in virulence, we generated two isogenic mutants disturbed in capsule production. For that purpose, we first cloned and characterized a major part of the capsular polysaccharide biosynthesis (cps) locus of S. suis serotype 2. Based on the established sequence, 14 open reading frames (ORFs), designated Orf2Z, Orf2Y, Orf2X, and Cps2A to Cps2K, were identified. Twelve ORFs belonged to a single transcriptional unit. The gene products of 11 of these ORFs showed similarity to proteins involved in polysaccharide biosynthesis of other gram-positive microorganisms. Nonencapsulated isogenic mutants were generated in the cps2B and cps2EF genes by insertional mutagenesis. In contrast to the wild-type S. suis serotype 2 strain, the nonencapsulated strains were highly sensitive to ingestion by porcine alveolar lung macrophages in vitro. More importantly, the nonencapsulated mutant strains were completely avirulent in young germfree pigs after intranasal inoculation. These observations indicate that the capsule of S. suis serotype 2 plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of S. suis serotype 2 infections.

Bovine immunodeficiency-like virus (BIV) was passagedin vivo by intraperitoneal transfusion of ovine whole blood. Prior to transfusion, the recipient sheep were given sodium thioglycolate intraperitoneally to induce mild non-suppurative inflammation. The anti-BIV antibody response, haematology, and peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets (B, ?d, CD2+, CD4+ and CD8+) of recipient sheep were assessed for one year following transfusion. Passaging was successful since serum anti-BIV antibody responses were detected in 5 of the 6 recipient sheep; 1 of the 5 remained seropositive throughout the study. Lentivirus was not isolated from the recipient sheep, but provirus was detected by the polymerase chain reaction in DNA from peripheral blood leukocytes in 3 of the 5 sheep that seroconverted. In the BIV-inoculated sheep, neutrophils and eosinophils were significantly increased (p?0.05) at 3 months and between 6 and 8 months postinoculation, respectively. B, CD2+ and CD4+ cells and the CD4+/CD8+ ratios were significantly increased (p?0.05) 2 months postinoculation. Mild, transient haematological changes occurred in BIV-exposed sheep, but illness was not detected in the year.

Two signals are required for meiosis and spore formation in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae: starvation and the MAT products a1 and alpha 2, which determine the a/alpha cell type. These signals lead to increased expression of the IME1 (inducer of meiosis) gene, which is required for sporulation and sporulation-specific gene expression. We report here the sequence of the IME1 gene and the consequences of IME1 expression from the GAL1 promoter. The deduced IME1 product is a 360-amino-acid protein with a tyrosine-rich C-terminal region. Expression of PGAL1-IME1 in vegetative a/alpha cells led to moderate accumulation of four early sporulation-specific transcripts (IME2, SPO11, SPO13, and HOP1); the transcripts accumulated 3- to 10-fold more after starvation. Two sporulation-specific transcripts normally expressed later (SPS1 and SPS2) did not accumulate until PGAL1-IME1 strains were starved, and the intact IME1 gene was not activated by PGAL1-IME1 expression. In a or alpha cells, which lack alpha 2 or a1, expression of PGAL1-IME1 led to the same pattern of IME2 and SPO13 expression as in a/alpha cells, as measured with ime2::lacZ and spo13::lacZ fusions. Thus, in wild-type strains, the increased expression of IME1 in starved a/alpha cells can account entirely for cell type control, but only partially for nutritional control, of early sporulation-specific gene expression. PGAL1-IME1 expression did not cause growing cells to sporulate but permitted efficient sporulation of amino acid-limited cells, which otherwise sporulated poorly. We suggest that IME1 acts primarily as a positive regulator of early sporulation-specific genes and that growth arrest is an independent prerequisite for execution of the sporulation program.

Two signals activate meiosis in yeast: starvation and expression of the a1 and alpha 2 products of the mating-type locus. Prior studies suggest that these signals stimulate expression of an activator of meiosis, the IME1 (inducer of meiosis) product. We have cloned a gene, IME2, with properties similar to those of IME1: both genes are required for meiosis, and both RNAs are induced in meiotic cells. Elevated dosage of IME1 or IME2 stimulates the meiotic recombination pathway without starvation; thus, the IME products may be part of the switch that activates meiosis. IME1 was found to be required for IME2 expression, and a multicopy IME2 plasmid permitted meiosis in an ime1 deletion mutant. Accordingly, we propose that the IME1 product stimulates meiosis mainly through activation of IME2 expression.

The Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae RTX-toxins ApxI, ApxII, and ApxIII are important virulence factors of this swine pathogen. It is hypothesized that the Apx toxins are deleterious to defense cells of the host, enabling the bacterium to infect the host. To confirm this, we studied the effect on porcine polymorphonuclear neutrophils of mutant strains of A. pleuropneumoniae that were devoid of Apx toxins. For this purpose, we developed a system for targeted mutagenesis of A. pleuropneumoniae based on the conditionally replicating plasmid pVE6063 and insertional mutagenesis by homologous recombination. Employing this system on the reference strain of serotype 1, a strain that secretes ApxI and ApxII, we generated mutant strains that were devoid of ApxI and/or ApxII. We compared the ability of the parent strain and the mutant strains to provoke an oxidative burst in porcine neutrophils and to kill these cells. The parent strain and mutants that secreted either ApxI or ApxII provoked an oxidative burst and killed the neutrophils, whereas mutant strains that were devoid of ApxI and ApxII did not. These experiments indicate the importance of ApxI and ApxII to these profound effects on neutrophils and emphasize the importance of ApxI and ApxII in pathogenesis.

The mechanism by which the hormones 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone and testosterone differentially regulate such diverse functions as development of male internal and external genitalia and maintenance of prostatic growth via a single androgen receptor (AR) is not well understood. To search for potential AR isoforms, an extensive pharmacological survey of the binding of [3H]mibolerone (7 alpha,17 alpha-[3H]dimethyl-19-nortestosterone) in dog prostate, adrenal gland, testis, liver, kidney, brain, muscle, and spleen cytosolic extracts was carried out. The antagonist androst-4-en-3,17-dione (ATD), as well as a series of unsaturated analogues of testosterone, exhibited marked tissue specificity for binding to mibolerone-binding proteins (MBPs), with ATD having a 10-fold higher affinity for the MBPs present in liver than for those in prostate and testis. The difference in affinity was not due to tissue-specific metabolism of ATD. Competition binding profiles for ATD with mixtures of prostate and liver extracts were consistent with two distinct populations of binding sites. Both wild-type human AR-B and the recently discovered human AR-A isoform were expressed in COS cells and were found to exhibit pharmacology similar to that of the prostatic MBPs in dogs. Analogues of ATD or testosterone could prove to be useful probes for delineating the differential effects of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone and testosterone on the biological actions of the AR and related proteins.

A prototype camera designed to test the observing and data reduction techniques for the 2 Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) has been used to search for extremely red objects. Selection criteria based on the combination of near-IR and visible light observations help separate the vast majority of ordinary stars from more exotic objects. Visible spectroscopic observations for objects selected using these criteria in an area of just a few tenths of a square degree has resulted in the discovery of a quasar with a redshift of 0.147. The number of quasars expected at Ksin the 2MASS survey based on typical quasar colors and on the surface density of optically selected samples is ?0.17 deg?2. The 2MASS survey will result in a sample of quasars relatively unbiased by the presence of dust and will allow a reliable determination of whether there is a significant population of quasars with internal dust absorption.

The protein profiles of various cell fractions of 180 strains of Streptococcus suis type 2, which were isolated from diseased pigs, from healthy pigs when they were slaughtered, and from human patients, were analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting. The isolates from diseased pigs contained two proteins that were absent in most of the isolates from healthy pigs. One of these proteins was a 136-kDa protein that was previously identified as the muramidase-released protein (MRP). This protein was predominantly detected in protoplast supernatants and culture supernatants. The second protein was a 110-kDa protein that was detected only in culture supernatants and therefore was provisionally called extracellular factor (EF). Three phenotypes of S. suis type 2 strains were recognized. Isolates from organs of diseased pigs mainly belonged to the MRP+ EF+ phenotype (77%), while isolates from tonsils of healthy pigs mainly had the MRP- EF- phenotype (86%). Most of the isolates from human patients contained MRP (89%); 74% had the MRP+ EF- phenotype. These findings confirm the results of previous investigations which demonstrated that S. suis type 2 strains differ in virulence. Monoclonal antibodies raised against the 110-kDa EF recognized proteins with higher molecular weights in culture supernatants of all of the strains with the MRP+ EF- phenotype. However, none of the strains with the MRP+ EF+ phenotype produced these high-molecular-weight proteins. Our results demonstrate that MRP and EF are associated with virulence. This suggests that one or both of these proteins are virulence factors that play a role in the pathogenesis of S. suis type 2 infections in pigs and human patients.

To determine whether the virulence of Streptococcus suis type 2 is associated with the phenotype of the strain, we infected newborn germfree pigs with 10 strains of S. suis type 2 categorized by three phenotypes. In an earlier study, the phenotypes were distinguished by the presence or absence of the muramidase-released protein (MRP) and an extracellular factor (EF) and were designated MRP+ EF+, MRP+ EF- and MRP- EF-. Pigs were first inoculated with Bordetella bronchiseptica to predispose them to infection and were then intranasally inoculated with the streptococci. Strains of the MRP+ EF+ phenotype induced fever and increased the number of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in blood. Specific clinical signs of disease such as nervous disorders and lameness were also observed. At necropsy bacteriologic and pathologic examination disclosed meningoencephalitis, polyserositis, and polyarthritis. Strains of the MRP+ EF- phenotype induced only nonspecific clinical signs of disease such as recumbency, lack of appetite, and fever; only slight pathologic changes were detected in the serosae. The four strains of the MRP- EF- phenotype induced no signs of disease. These findings indicate that the 110-kDa EF and, to a lesser degree, the 136-kDa MRP may be associated with the virulence of the bacterium. The results demonstrated that S. suis type 2 strains producing both MRP and EF are pathogenic for pigs.

Cytolysin I (ClyI) and cytolysin II (ClyII), which are present in the culture supernatant of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 9, are thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of pig pleuropneumonia. The purpose of this study was to clone and characterize the genetic determinants of these cytolysins. Cloning was accomplished by the screening of DNA libraries for the presence of cytolytic activity and for the presence of DNA sequences homologous to leukotoxin DNA of Pasteurella haemolytica. Both genetic determinants were found to be members of the RTX cytotoxin family. The ClyII determinant was characterized in more detail. It appeared that ClyII more closely resembled the leukotoxin of P. haemolytica than the alpha-hemolysin of Escherichia coli. The ClyII amino acid sequence was identical to a hemolysin gene sequence of A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 5; this finding indicates that the latter gene also codes for ClyII and not for ClyI, as has previously been suggested. The genetic organization of the ClyII determinant differed from the genetic organization of other RTX determinants. Genes responsible for secretion of ClyII were not contiguous with the toxin gene. Instead, secretion genes were present elsewhere in the genome. These secretion genes, however, belong to the ClyI operon. This indicates that the secretion genes of the ClyI operon are responsible for secretion of ClyI and ClyII.

We present a catalog of the important optical data for the radio sources in the Revised Third Cambridge Catalog. Optical positions, redshifts, magnitudes, and identifications have been included, as well as radio flux densities and spectral indices for the sample of 297 extragalactic 3CR sources. A bibliography of optical identifications, spectroscopy, and radio position/structure is also given. In addition to the literature compilation, we present new spectroscopic observations of 27 3CR radio galaxies, 25 of which do not have previously published redshifts.

The contribution of muramidase-released protein (MRP) and extracellular factor (EF) to the virulence of Streptococcus suis type 1 and 2 infections was studied. For that aim, we constructed mutants of S. suis types 1 and 2 by inactivating the genes encoding MRP and EF. Moreover, we changed a type 2 strain producing the 110-kDa EF protein into a strain producing a modified protein (EF*) of increased molecular mass. The chromosomally located mrp and epf genes were inactivated by replacement recombination by using nonreplicative plasmids. Newborn germfree pigs were inoculated with pathogenic type 1 and 2 strains and with the isogenic mutant strains. Wild-type as well as mutant strains induced fever, specific signs of disease, and lesions. Moreover, all mutant strains could be reisolated from the central nervous system of infected pigs. These results showed that inactivation or alteration of the mrp and epj genes had no measurable effect on the pathogenicity of S. suis types 1 and 2.

The photoinactivation and photoaffinity labeling of androgen binding sites present in cytosol prepared from intact sexually mature rat epididymides have been demonstrated by using unlabeled and [3H]-labeled 17 beta-hydroxy-4,6-androstadien-3-one. Both photoinactivation and photolabeling are dependent upon exposure to light. These processes are inhibited when photolysis is conducted in the presence of the photoinert compound 17 beta-hydroxy-5 alpha-androstan-3-one, suggesting that steroid-specific sites are involved in the reactions. The labeled steroid-specific product of photolysis is macromolecular with a molecular weight of 47,000 as determined by electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gels containing NaDodSO4, and proteinaceous because digestion of the cytosol with pronase before photolysis eliminates steroid-specific binding. After photolysis, the protein-steroid complex has the ability to withstand dissociation during electrophoresis under denaturing conditions, and unlabeled 17 beta-hydroxy-5 alpha-androstan-3-one fails to displace the label from the complex. Thus, the binding of [3H]17 beta-hydroxy-4,6-androstadien-3-one to the cytosolic protein is covalent. This steroid-specific product is identified as an androgen binding protein of testicular origin by its comigration with native androgen binding protein on nondenaturing polyacrylamide gels and by its molecular weight which is within the range reported for androgen binding protein subunits.

Streptococcus suis type 2 strains that are pathogenic for pigs produce a 110-kDa extracellular protein factor (EF). Nonpathogenic and weakly pathogenic strains do not produce EF or produce a protein (EF*) that is immunologically related to EF. To study the pathogenesis of S. suis type 2 in pigs and to develop tools and methods for the control of S. suis type 2 infections, we cloned and characterized the genes encoding EF and various EF* proteins. Analysis of the deduced amino acid sequences showed that the first 833 amino acids at the N terminus of the EF and EF* proteins were nearly identical. The proteins differed, however, at their C termini. Unlike the 110-kDa EF protein, the EF* proteins contained several repeated units of 76 amino acids. The number and arrangement of the repeats in the EF* proteins varied. The data suggest that the gene encoding EF could have evolved from an epf* gene by a specific deletion event. The lack of repeated amino acid units in the EF protein may be related to virulence.

We cloned and sequenced the gene encoding the muramidase-released protein (MRP) of a pathogenic Streptococcus suis type 2 strain to determine whether its amino acid sequence resembles that of proteins with known functions and to determine its function in virulence. The complete nucleotide sequence composing the gene and the regions flanking it was determined. The deduced amino acid sequence revealed the presence of a signal peptide at the N terminus and a cell envelope anchor at the C terminus, both of which resembled similar regions in several other surface proteins from gram-positive bacteria. The processed form of MRP has a length of 1,209 amino acids and a calculated molecular weight of 131,094. A highly repetitive region preceded the envelope anchor. The repeated units were preceded by a proline-rich stretch of amino acids (26 of 86). No overall homologies were observed between the amino acid sequence of MRP and protein sequences in the EMBL data bank. A particular region within the amino acid sequence, however, showed some similarity with the fibronectin-binding protein of Staphylococcus aureus. Binding of MRP to human fibronectin, however, could not be confirmed.

The biochemical effects of d- and l-p-chloroamphetamine (PCA) were compared with the brain levels of the unchanged drug at various times after a single injection. Initially both isomers produced rapid and pronounced decreases in the whole brain levels of serotonin and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, tryptophan hydroxylase activity and the synaptosomal uptake of 3-H-serotonin. At later times (e.g., 2 weeks), the effects of the d-isomer were much more pronounced than were those of the l-isomer. At intermediate times (2-4 days), a variable and dose-dependent recovery of synaptsomal uptake activity and tryptophan hydroxylase activity occurred after d-PCA. In both whole brain and forebrain, long-term reductions in these activities were found. However, in the midbrain, an area containing the cell bodies of serotonergic neurons, only a slight initial decrease in tryptophan hydroxylase activity occurred. The whole brain levels of the two isomers were equal from 4 to 96 hours after injection and declined exponentially in a single monophasic manner monophasic decine of the levels of PCA was found in forebrain and midbrain samples. Thus, the initial and long-term effects of PCA are apparently mediated by different mechanisms. The former is correlated with the brain levels of the unchanged drug; the latter is not. The lack of any indication of a biphasic decay curve after 10 half-lives and the intermediate recovery of serotonergic function do not support a reserpine-like mechanism for the long-term effects of PCA. Instead, a mechanism related to neurotoxicity is proposed.

The capacity of a series of intraneuronal metabolites of L-alpha-methyldopa to compete for alpha-1 ([3H]prazosin, alpha-2([3H]clonidine and beta ([3H]dihydroalprenolol) receptor binding in rat forebrain was studied. Each metabolite studied had a unique order of activity at each receptor. These data show that (-)-erythro-alpha-methylnorepinephrine and (-)-erythro-alpha-methylepinephrine compete with high affinity for alpha-2 receptors, thereby supporting the suggestion that alpha-2 receptors mediate hypotensive effects of L-alpha-methyldopa . Furthermore, these metabolites of L-alpha-methyldopa competed with high potency for beta-1 receptors in forebrain and (-)-erythro-alpha-methylepinephrine was more potent than (-)-epinephrine, (-)-norepinephrine and (-)-erythro-alpha-methylnorepinephrine in competing for beta-2 receptors on human lymphocytes. These data suggest that beta receptor stimulation may be important in determining the net effects of L-alpha-methyldopa. L-alpha-Methyldopa metabolites were much less potent than (-)-epinephrine and (-)-norepinephrine in competition for alpha-1 receptors. (+/-)-alpha-Methyldopamine was less potent than other l-alpha-methyldopa metabolites at all three receptors, suggesting that it is unlikely to be an important hypotensive metabolite of L-alpha-methyldopa.

The ribotype profiles of 42 different Streptococcus suis strains were studied. These strains belonged to five serotypes and differed in their virulence for pigs as well as in the expression of the muramidase-released protein and the extracellular protein factor. For the ribotyping, chromosomal DNAs were digested with EcoRI and were hybridized with a 1,066-bp ribosomal DNA probe. The hybridization patterns showed genetic heterogeneity within and between the serotypes. Pathogenic strains of serotype 2 and highly pathogenic strains of serotype 1 could be recognized by their unique ribotype profiles. Nonpathogenic strains showed a high degree of genetic heterogeneity. Moreover, by comparing the 16S ribosomal DNA sequences of a number of S. suis strains, we were able to design two DNA probes which specifically hybridized with S. suis strains.

A bibliography of optical/radio data is also given. In addition to the literature compilation, new spectroscopic observations of 22 3CR galaxies with previously unpublished redshifts are presented.

In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, meiosis and spore formation require the induction of sporulation-specific genes. Two genes are thought to activate the sporulation program: IME1 and IME2 (inducer of meiosis). Both genes are induced upon entry into meiosis, and IME1 is required for IME2 expression. We report here that IME1 is essential for expression of four sporulation-specific genes. In contrast, IME2 is not absolutely essential for expression of the sporulation-specific genes, but contributes to their rapid induction. Expression of IME2 from a heterologous promoter permits the expression of these sporulation-specific genes, meiotic recombination, and spore formation in the absence of IME1. We propose that the IME1 and IME2 products can each activate sporulation-specific genes independently. In addition, the IME1 product stimulates sporulation-specific gene expression indirectly through activation of IME2 expression.

The paper describes a theoretical analysis of the stability of a thin rectangular sheet with transverse ribs, simply supported at all edges, when subjected to compressive end load. The method is the Rayleigh‐Ritz energy method. The results obtained in the previous paper by the same authors, “The buckling of grids of stringers and ribs”, have been freely used. A “buckling equation” has been obtained from which it is possible to calculate the requisite flexural stiffness of the ribs in any case, assuming a value for their torsional rigidity.

The paper describes a theoretical analysis of the stability of a plane rectangular grid consisting of two sets of parallel members (stringers and ribs) intersecting at right angles, when loaded in compression parallel to one set of members (the stringers). Both sets are composed of similar members of uniform section uniformly spaced and the ends of all members are held in the original plane of the grid. The exact solution of this problem appropriate to certain edge conditions is obtained both by consideration of the equations of equilibrium and by the Rayleigh‐Hitz energy method.

The feasibility of producing soil‐conditioning agents from agricultural residues by chemical modification was investigated. Such reactions as xanthation, cyanoethylation, methylation, hydroxyethylation, sulfation, phosphorylation, acetylation, and oxidation were applied to wheat straw, corn stover, corncobs, bagasse, rice hulls, and their major components. From results of comparative reactions on cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, the major part of the soil‐conditioning activity of chemically‐modified agricultural residues was found attributable to the substituted cellulose fraction. The extent of substitution required to produce active products varies with the nature of the derivative but coincides in all cases with that required to give water‐soluble products. Within these limits the degree of polymerization has more influence on aggregate‐stabilizing activities than either the type or extent of substitution. Data on a number of microbial gums, plant polysaccharides, and starch derivatives are also presented.

Ampicillin and tetracycline, in doses of 2 g a day, were compared in the treatment of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. Seventy-nine patients were followed for 3 to 29 months and were treated for 118 exacerbations. Clinical improvement occurred after 10 days of treatment with either drug in over 80% of the cases. Haemophilus influenzaeand Diplococcus pneumoniaewere eradicated from the sputum more than 60% of the time, but in general there was a poor correlation between bacteriological clearing and clinical response. The effect of chemoprophylaxis with ampicillin and tetracycline in doses of 1 g a day on the frequency of acute exacerbations of bronchitis was compared with that of a placebo. Seven hundred eighty prophylactic regimens, consisting of one capsule every 12 hr for 5 days beginning with the first sign of a cold, were prescribed for 76 patients. Irrespective of the regimen, an acute exacerbation of bronchitis was encountered at approximately 13% of the follow-up visits to the clinic.

A 25-year-old man developed staphylococcal enteritis with severe shock during treatment of peritonitis with wide-spectrum antibiotics. The infection subsided during treatment with kanamycin (8.0 Gm. in four days). He subsequently developed nerve deafness, which has persisted. Associated with the onset of this were hypertension and tachycardia, highly responsive to guanethedine, and temporary impairment of 9th cranial nerve sensory functions and of carotid depressor reflexes bilaterally; these disturbances were ascribed to 9th nerve injury involving the moderator (buffer) nerves. Hypertension was transitory.
