- Abstract
This study forms part of a major longitudinal research project collaboration between the Anna Freud Centre, Coram and Great Ormond Street Hospital, which set out to explore adopted children’s and adoptive parents’ outcomes and experiences from middle childhood through to adolescence. In this paper, 17 adoptive mothers of late adopted children, currently in early adolescence (aged 12 to 15 years), were interviewed. The focus of the study draws upon their worries and fears regarding their children during adolescence and as they approach adulthood. The Parent Development Interviews (PDI) were analysed using thematic analysis and generated five overarching themes: Vulnerability, Violence, Derailing opportunities, Autonomyand Anxieties about the birth family. This qualitative exploration provides strong evidence for how these parents reflected upon very concrete challenges and anxieties about their child’s journey, including both their current context and anticipated outcomes. The overwhelming majority of research to date on this population examines negative outcomes quantitatively; this study adds an important qualitative layer of the parents’ own perspectives.

24. The Ecology of Foster Care – Resilience and Adaptation into Adulthood

- Abstract
This paper identifies some of the key debates about the evidence from outcomes for children placed in foster care, the challenging issues in the design of the system, how it operates and what the outcomes for children look like. The paper explores foster care as being based in the evolution of the human species in its capacity to adapt, problem-solve and identify resources through cooperative effort between individuals and social groupings with the family as key. An essential attribute of families and parenting is the ability to form close, meaningful and sustained relationships that provide security, stability and opportunity, including connectedness to the community and the resources that are a part of this. Family forms the basis for the child being able to access personal, social, cultural and economic capital both in the present and into the future. One of the serious issues for foster care is the short-term basis of that commitment and, even when it lasts over the longer term, the care arrangement typically ends as the child reaches adulthood. These issues are explored through the concept of resilience and place foster care within an ecological framework that evolves over time.

27. The potential for use of the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA) in adoption support assessments1

- Abstract
The Adoption Support Fund in England, which was rolled out on 1 May 2015, seeks to improve the lives of adopted children and their families by providing resources to fund therapeutic interventions for the child. Accessing the Fund requires that the needs of the child and family are fully assessed and the expected outcomes are identified. This raises questions about the use of standardised and validated assessment tools as a part of the process. This article reviews the benefits and challenges of using established instruments, such as the Common Assessment Framework (CAF) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and considers the relevance of the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA) for adoption situations. It is argued that given the legal requirements to link need, services and outcomes, the importance of using validated assessment tools is strong. However, social workers need training to administer them and interpret the results. While using the SDQ should be firmly embedded in practice, the contribution of the DAWBA, although promising, requires further exploration. Social workers will also need training on how best to use it, and how to interpret the results and integrate these into a comprehensive assessment of the child and family.

- Abstract
Although cytochrome ffrom the Antarctic psychrophile, Chlamydomonas raudensisUWO 241, exhibits a lower apparent molecular mass (34 kD) than that of the mesophile C. reinhardtii(41 kD) based on SDS-PAGE, both proteins are comparable in calculated molecular mass and show 79% identity in amino acid sequence. The difference in apparent molecular mass was maintained after expression of petAfrom both Chlamydomonasspecies in either E. colior a C. reinhardtiiΔpetAmutant and after substitution of a unique third cysteine-292 to phenylalanine in the psychrophilic cytochrome f. Moreover, the heme of the psychrophilic form of cytochrome fwas less stable upon heating than that of the mesophile. In contrast to C. raudensis, a C. reinhardtiiΔpetAmutant transformed with petAfrom C. raudensisexhibited the ability to undergo state transitions and a capacity for intersystem electron transport comparable to that of C. reinhardtiiwild type. However, the C. reinhardtiipetAtransformants accumulated lower levels of cytochrome b6/fcomplexes and exhibited lower light saturated rates of O2evolution than C. reinhardtiiwild type. We show that the presence of an altered form of cytochrome fin C. raudensisdoes not account for its inability to undergo state transitions or its impaired capacity for intersystem electron transport as previously suggested. A combined survey of the apparent molecular mass, thermal stability and amino acid sequences of cytochrome ffrom a broad range of mesophilic species shows unequivocally that the observed differences in cytochrome f structure are not related to psychrophilly. Thus, caution must be exercised in relating differences in amino acid sequence and thermal stability to adaptation to cold environments.Although cytochrome ffrom the Antarctic psychrophile, Chlamydomonas raudensisUWO 241, exhibits a lower apparent molecular mass (34 kD) than that of the mesophile C. reinhardtii(41 kD) based on SDS-PAGE, both proteins are comparable in calculated molecular mass and show 79% identity in amino acid sequence. 33. ‘Skills Protect’: Towards a Professional Foster Care Service

- Abstract
Almost two-thirds of children and young people looked after by local authorities in England are placed in foster care. Recent studies suggest that the looked after population is significantly different from the general child and young people population in terms of mental and physical health and educational attainment. Failure to recognise and acknowledge the reality of the nature and needs of this population contributes to the current difficulties in providing sufficient and appropriate foster carers. Methods of recruitment, retention and support of foster carers still, in many cases, reflect a historical, now inaccurate, perception of the fostering task. Recent government initiatives have placed a welcome spotlight on the fostering service and are likely to result in improved services. However, the Choice Protects focus on effective commissioning of fostering resources, while necessary, may not be sufficient. In this article, which arises from the observations and conclusions of BAAF social work staff engaged in extensive consultancy with a large number of fostering agencies, Barbara Hutchinson analyses the current situation and proposes key features for the development of an effective fostering service. Her paper was written with support from Jane Asquith and John Simmonds

34. Developmental and environmental regulation of anthocyanin pigmentation in wheat tissues transformed with anthocyanin regulatory genes

- Abstract
Summary: Cell autonomous anthocyanin pigmentation, produced by the anthocyanin regulatory genes B and C1 controlled by the constitutive CaMV35s promoter (pBC1-7), was used to optimize biolistic gene delivery into embryogenic wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv ‘Chris’) scutellum cultures. Intensely pigmented callus cells were observed 24 h postbombardment but these cells did not continue to divide and were developmentally terminal. A population of nonexpressing cells generated transgenic sectors which showed light-dependent anthocyanin pigmentation. Anthocyanin pigmentation was suppressed in regenerating shoot cultures but reverted to light-dependent production in the pericarp of developing seeds. Similarly, following microtargeted gene delivery into apical meristems, anthocyanin production was developmentally suppressed in leaf base meristems but prominent anthocyanin sectors developed in mature tissues beyond this region and persisted throughout leaf growth. In three developmental situations, callus proliferation, plant regeneration, and leaf growth, perpetuation of cells with anthocyanin regulator genes under the control of constitutive promoters was dependent on a higher level of regulation to suppress pigmentation at developmentally sensitive stages of meristematic activity. These findings provide additional evidence that the anthocyanin regulatory genes may be responsive to a variety of developmental and environmental stimuli.

44. 'Crossing the Boundary' from Student to Qualified Social Worker
- Author
-
Simmonds, John
- Abstract
The article explores the experience of students entering social work practice upon qualification. Using concepts drawn from the socio-technical theory of Miller and Rice, the experience is analysed in terms of 'crossing a boundary' and 'taking up a role'.Illustrative material is drawn from a two-day conference of ex-Goldsmiths' students together with an extended case study drawn from the caseload of one of those students.

46. Race and culture: The management of 'difference' in the learning group
- Author
-
Brummer, Nadine and Simmonds, John
- Abstract
Student demands on social work courses for greater integration of issues of race and culture into every part of the curriculum put staff in danger of feeling guilty and reacting defensively. As a result, hasty and inappropriate changes can be introduced or inaction result from the paralysis that guilt induces. In this article we argue that the demands themselves need to be understood and thought about as a means of 'learning about' the nature of 'difference' and its consequences for and impact on individual and group identity. Attention to the group process is at the heart of creating a facilitating environment that enables painful and powerful issues to be addressed and understood. Change is fundamental to learning and cannot be addressed by formal teaching methods alone.

- Abstract
A partial cDNA clone, Pis 63, corresponding to a mRNA highly expressed in Brassica napus pistils, was isolated by differential screening. PCR was used to complete the Pis 63 sequence (Pis 63-1) and to obtain the sequence of another related cDNA (Pis 63-2). Northern blot and in situ analyses demonstrated that these transcripts are expressed in the stigma throughout flower development. Pis 63-1 and Pis 63-2 display similarity to a cotton fibre cDNA clone.

- Abstract
A cDNA clone, Sta 44-4, corresponding to a mRNA highly expressed in Brassica napus cv. Westar stamens, was isolated by differential screening and characterized. Northern blot and in situ analyses demonstrated that Sta 44-4 is synthesized in pollen beginning at the late uninucleate stage and reaches a maximum in trinucleate microspores. Sta 44-4 displayed significant sequence similarity to known pollen polygalacturonase genes. The B. napus pollen polygalacturonase gene was shown to be part of a small gene family and to display some polymorphism among different cultivars.
