ABSTRACTViews on gentrification and intersections with health and well-being were explored via semi-structured interviews with nineteen residents (≥60 years) in Porto (Portugal). Participants acknowledged that gentrification led to noticeable transformations in recreational areas, food/beverage establishments, housing, and commercial activities. Participants had contrasting views on gentrification-induced transformations. Some acknowledged positive contributions, while others expressed concerns about higher living costs, scarcity of affordable housing, weakening social cohesion, and aggravated vulnerability to mental health issues. Several participants claimed that the changes, mainly concerning commerce and recreation, seemed directed towards youth. Policymaking driving gentrification should consider older locals’ needs to promote better health.

Introduction:Climate change is a pressing public health issue. Urban populations, especially in coastal areas, are highly vulnerable. As climate change progresses, local adaptation becomes increasingly important. We present a case study about the inclusion of public health concerns in local climate change adaptation in Porto (Portugal). Methods:We analysed two local adaptation plans using qualitative content analysis and conducted semi-structured interviews with a purposeful sample of 6 key stakeholders with different profiles. We did a qualitative content analysis of the respective transcripts. Results:Porto is undergoing health-relevant consequences of climate change, which are expected to worsen further in the future. Porto’s geographical and demographic characteristics and urban environment make its population highly vulnerable to climate change-related health risks. Public health is recognized as a central element in local adaptation efforts. Drivers for integrating health concerns include growing climate change awareness, a sense of urgency, social capital, institutional networks, access to resources, and political commitment. Nevertheless, challenges like data limitations, resource constraints, climate knowledge gaps, communication issues, and political cycles hinder both local adaptation and the integration of health considerations. Discussion/Conclusion:In Porto, health seems both a powerful mobilizing issue and a central topic concerning local adaptation. However, the complex and long-term nature of climate change and the associated uncertainty hinder adaptation efforts. High-quality data about both the local climate and population health are thus essential. The transversal nature of risk is recognized and multi-sectorial approaches, public participation, mainstreaming, and policy integration are necessary to prevent imbalances. Local adaptation efforts, including health-related efforts, are shaped by the international (belonging to the European Union), national, and local contexts. Successful local adaptation and inclusion of health aspects require mainstreaming and policy integration across different areas and involvement of multiple stakeholders, including the population, in order to maximize resources and avoid undesired trade-offs.

PurposeTo compare outcomes of primary trabeculectomy using either mitomycin C (MMC) alone versus MMC augmented with intracamerular bevacizumab in patients with open-angle glaucoma.MethodsRetrospective, cohort, two-centre, comparative study. Patients’ data were screened between October 2015 and March 2019, with inclusion requiring a minimum follow-up of 24 months. Primary outcome was intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering at 24 months, with surgical success defined with different maximum IOP targets (≤18, ≤16 and ≤14 mm Hg) and at least 30% reduction and higher than 5 mm Hg. Absolute success was achieved if no IOP-lowering medication was needed and a qualified success if otherwise. Safety outcomes were analysed.ResultsA total of 110 eyes underwent trabeculectomy with MMC, 51 of these combined with intracamerular bevacizumab. Both strategies were effective in terms of IOP lowering (baseline vs 2 years postoperatively: 24.4 (8.0) mm Hg vs 12.1 (5.3) mm Hg in the MMC group; 25.1 (8.7) vs 10.8 (3.8) mm Hg in the MMC+bevacizumab group; p<0.001 in both comparisons). The MMC+bevacizumab group had a significant difference towards higher efficacy on absolute success rates at all targets (IOP≤14 or ≤16 or ≤18 mm Hg; p=0.010, p=0.039 and p=0.007, respectively). The large majority (93%) of the MMC+bevacizumab group was drop-free at 24 months, and 41% had IOP below 10 mm Hg. Complication rates were low and similar between groups, with no systemic adverse events.ConclusionsIntracamerular bevacizumab in MMC-augmented primary trabeculectomy increases the chances of obtaining low IOP outcomes. This strategy may be useful when planning for surgeries aiming at target pressures in the low teens.Trial registration numberISRCTN93098069.

ABSTRACTThis study used mathematical models to compare the classification efficiency of two types of hydrocyclones – GMAX and KREBS – both of which have cylindrical sections with a diameter of 15″ (0.381 m). These devices were installed at the desliming stage and positioned on two parallel production lines at the Samarco Mining Industrial Facility. Samples were collected at the feed, underflow, and overflow streams. Lynch and Rao’s model was used to calibrate the partition curve. To determine the efficiencies of these classifiers, the total area under the curve until the d50point and above the curve beyond d50was calculated. Lynch and Rao’s alpha (α) parameter was also determined. Results show that GMAX15 performed better than KREBS15, with a lower area (−22.4%) and a finer cut point, d50c(0.0183 mm). The KREBS15 and GMAX15 hydrocyclones, operating under similar conditions, presented the same αvalue of 1.85.
