The chloronicotinate (I) is cyclized with the glyoxalates (II) to produce the furopyridin‐3(2H)‐ones (III).

Furo(2,3‐b:4,5‐c')dipyridine (VI) is prepared starting from the aldehyde (I) as shown in the scheme.

The furopyridine (I) is converted to the cyano derivative (VI) via the formyl compound (III) and the oxime (V).

The ethoxycarbonylhydroxyfuropyridines (I) reacts with ethyl bromoacetate (II) to give the ether (III) which is transetherified with sodium ethoxide (IV), producing the ethoxy derivative (V).
