The minute pirate bug Orius sauteri(Poppius) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) is a major natural enemy of micro-pests and is expected to be an effective pest-control agent in Asia. Recently, the violet wavelength has been found to attract several natural enemies, and we proved that violet illumination can increase the O. sauteripopulation and decrease the pest populations on crops. To optimize this attraction strategy for natural enemies, knowledge of their daily activity rhythm is indispensable. In this study, we examined the daily distribution of O. sauteriactivity and determined the lighting time appropriate for selective attraction. Under artificial light–dark cycles, O. sauteridisplayed a typical diurnal rhythm that peaked from 9 to 12 h after light-on and declined after light-off, regardless of the photoperiod. A similar activity rhythm was confirmed under natural light. Importantly, the activity remained for around 2 h after sunset, even in complete darkness. Considering the diurnality of micro-pests, we conclude that the most efficient lighting time for the selective attraction of this natural enemy to crops is during the 2 h after sunset.

The large-scale rearing of the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens(L.), to obtain fertilized eggs is not conducive to the collection of information on oviposition by and survival of adult flies. To obtain this information, we raised 100 adults each within small cages (27 × 27 × 27 cm) in the laboratory with either supplementary light-emitting diode (LED) lighting or 2 h of sunlight per day. We obtained fertilized eggs in both light treatments. Although sunlight enhanced the proportion of fertilized eggs, the patterns of oviposition were similar in both treatments, and there were no significant differences in the total numbers of egg clutches and oviposition periods. To examine effects on adult longevity, we fed newly emerged adults sugar and water, water only, or nothing. Sugar increased longevity to 3 times in males and 2 times in females compared to water alone. This small-scale rearing method would help to maintain cultures of the black soldier fly throughout the year in the laboratory at low cost.

Insects are able to see ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Nocturnal insects are often attracted to light sources that emit large amounts of UV radiation, and devices that exploit this behavior, such as light traps for forecasting pest outbreaks, and electric insect killers, have been developed. Some diurnal species are attracted to yellow; yellow pan traps are used for conducting surveys for pest outbreaks and yellow sticky plates are used for pest control. Lamps that give off yellow illumination have been used effectively to control the activity of nocturnal moths and thus reduce damage to fruit, vegetables, and flowers. Covering cultivation facilities with film that filters out near-UV radiation reduces the invasion of pests such as whiteflies and thrips into the facilities, thus reducing damage. Reflective material placed on cultivated land can control the approach of flying insects such as aphids. Future development and use of new light sources such as light-emitting diodes is anticipated for promoting integrated pest management.

Dichotomous spermatogenesis was examined in relation to diapause in the sweet potato hornworm, Agrius convolvuli. In non-diapause individuals, eupyrene metaphase began during the fifth larval instar and eupyrene spermatids appeared in wandering larvae. Bundles of mature sperm were found after pupation. Apyrene spermatocytes also appeared during the fifth larval instar, but meiotic divisions occurred irregularly and their nuclei were discarded from the cells during spermiogenesis. Morphometric analyses of flagellar axonemes showed a variable sperm number in apyrene bundles. The variation ranging from 125 to 256 sperm per bundle indicated abnormal divisions or the elimination of apyrene spermatocytes. In diapause-induced hornworms, spermatogenesis progressed similarly during the larval stages. The cessation of spermatogenesis during diapause is characterized by 1) secondary spermatocytes and sperm bundles degenerating gradually as the diapause period lengthens, and 2) spermatogonia or primary spermatocytes appearing throughout diapause. A TUNEL (TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end-labeling) assay revealed that DNA fragmentation occurred in the nuclei of secondary spermatocytes and early spermatids. Aggregates of heterochromatin along the nuclear membrane indicated the onset of apoptosis, and condensed chromatin was confirmed by electron microscopy to be the apoptotic body. Volicitin-related compounds were found in the oral secretion of the three noctuid species, Helicoverpa armigera, Mythimna separataand Spodoptera litura, and one sphingid species, Agrius convolvuli. Volicitin [N-(17-hydroxylinolenoyl)-L-glutamine], N-(17-hydroxy-linoleoyl)-glutamine, N-linolenoylglutamine and N-linoleoylglutamine were identified in the secretion from the noctuid larvae. In secretions from the sphingid larvae, N-linolenoylglutamine and N-linoleoylglutamine were the main components. Furthermore, there were significant differences in the amounts of the N-acylamino acid conjugates in the secretions from the three noctuid species. These results suggest that the proportion of volicitin-related compounds in the regurgitant was species-specific.

Abstract: Neuroendoscopic surgery was used to treat patients with various forms of hydrocephalus with specific pathophysiology, including long-standing overt ventriculomegaly in adulthood (LOVA), isolated unilateral hydrocephalus (IUH), isolated IV ventricle (IFV), disproportionately large IV ventricle (DLFV), isolated rhombencephalic ventricle (IRV), isolated quarto-ventriculomegaly (IQV), dorsal sac in holoprosencephaly (DS), and loculated ventricle (LV). A total of 26 operative procedures were performed, with neuroendoscopic surgery in 22 patients, 12 with unique forms of noncommunicating hydrocephalus and 10 with various types of postshunt isolated compartment. These procedures included III ventriculostomy, aqueductal plasty by both rostral and caudal approaches, foraminal plasty in the foramen of Monro/foramen of Magendie, septostomy, IV ventriculostomy, fenestration of septation in the loculated ventricle, fenestration of arachnoid cyst or cystic tumor obstructing a ventricle with or without tumor removal, and dorsal sac ventriculostomy. The characteristics of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics in the individual specific pathophysiologies were delineated by cardiac-gated cine-mode magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after the endoscopic procedure. The consequent success rate (success = restoration of communication of the CSF pathway in the individual patients) was 19/22 (86.4%). The progression of ventricular dilatation was stopped in 17 of 19 patients (89.5%) in whom the endoscopic procedure was successful (radiologically arrested hydrocephalus). Improvement in the clinical symptoms and signs (clinically arrested hydrocephalus) was obtained in 15 of the patients (68.2% of all patients: 5 with LOVA, 3 with IQV, 5 with IUH and 2 with LV). Seven patients (2 LOVA, 2 IFV, 1 DS, 1 DFLV and 1 IRV) underwent a shunt procedure after the neuroendoscopic procedure(s). The postoperative changes of ventriculomegaly were complicated, reflecting the differences in the brain parenchymal compliance and postoperatively corrected CSF flow dynamics in the major CSF pathway.

A major hemolymph protein (Mr480,000) in the larvae of the sweet potato hornworm, Agrius convolvuli, was purified and characterized. This protein was isolated with a high yield from the hemolymph of day 3 fifth final instar larvae by ammonium sulfate precipitation and Phenyl-Sepharose and Q-Sepharose column chromatographies. The protein has two subunits, an Mr84,000 subunit (α) and an Mr80,000 subunit (β), and the native protein was composed of a heterohexamer (α3β3). The two subunits have similar amino acid compositions, with high contents of aromatic amino acids (about 15% phenylalanine plus tyrosine) and low levels of methionine. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of both subunits showed high homologies with insect arylphorin-type storage proteins. The protein concentration in the hemolymph increased steeply from day 3 final instar larva and reached a maximum level of 42 mg/ml in females and 41 mg/ml in males among wandering larvae. The concentration in the hemolymph declined once during the larval–pupal transformation but remained high during the early–mid pupal period and almost disappeared after adult emergence. These quantitative changes were the same for males and females. Based on these characteristics, we identified the hemolymph protein as an arylphorin-type storage protein.

A retrospective analysis of the infantile acute subdural hematoma was made with special reference to its pathogenesis. In 11 of 15 cases, the hematomas were bilateral or a contralateral subdural fluid collection was present. In 7 of 11 patients who underwent operation the collection was bloody fluid and/or clotted blood. In 3 patients, a subdural membrane, as seen in adult chronic subdural hematoma, was found. In only 1 patient with unilateral hematoma was clotted blood present without subdural membrane. The thickest collection of clotted blood was in the parasagittal region. It is postulated that in most cases hemorrhage occurs after minor head injury, from the bridging veins near the superior sagittal sinus, into a pre-existing subdural fluid collection such as chronic subdural hematoma or subdural effusion with craniocerebral disproportion, and that infants without intracranial disproportion are unlikely to have acute subdural hematoma caused by minor head injury.

Using two mouse-mouse hybridoma cell lines, the response to ammonia step and serial changes was investigated in batch and continuous cultures with serum-free medium. The inhibitory effect of ammonia on cell growth depended on the cultivation mode, and differed markedly between cell lines. The cell line, 4C10B6 producing IgG monoclonal antibody against Pseudomonas, showed a high adaptation ability to ammonia. The 4C10B6 cells could grow under ammonia concentration as high as 21 mmol/l NH4Cl with a viability of 80% in the continuous culture with serial increase in ammonia concentration. Whereas, in the batch culture with ammonia step change the cell growth completely ceased at 12 mmol/l NH4Cl. The other cell line, TO-405 producing IgG monoclonal antibody against hepatitis B surface antigen, could not adapt to ammonia, and the cell growth did not occur at 9 mmol/l NH4Cl even under the ammonia serial change.
