Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) is a promising technique for achieving high spectral efficiency (SE) using multiple distributed access points (APs). However, harsh propagation environments often lead to significant communication performance degradation due to high penetration loss. To overcome this issue, we introduce the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) into the CF mMIMO system as a low-cost and power-efficient solution. In this paper, we focus on optimizing the joint precoding design of the RIS-aided CF mMIMO system to maximize the sum SE. This involves optimizing the precoding matrix at the APs and the reflection coefficients at the RIS. To tackle this problem, we propose a fully distributed multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithm that incorporates fuzzy logic (FL). Unlike conventional approaches that rely on alternating optimization techniques, our FL-based MARL algorithm only requires local channel state information, which reduces the need for high backhaul capacity. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed FL-MARL algorithm effectively reduces computational complexity while achieving similar performance as conventional MARL methods.

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) are two disruptive technologies for enabling the sixth-generation network. In this paper, we investigate the effect of channel aging on the RIS-aided CF massive MIMO systems over spatially correlated channels. We consider a minimum mean square error channel estimator that facilitates the derivation of closed-form spectral efficiency expressions. For the uplink, we compare the large-scale fading decoding method with the centralized decoding method. For the downlink, we adopt the maximum ratio precoding and propose a practical fractional power control method to improve the performance. Based on the analytical framework, we unveil the interplay between channel aging, spatial correlation, and signal processing methods. Our results demonstrate that the RIS-aided CF massive MIMO system outperforms the conventional CF counterpart system in both static and mobile scenarios. Moreover, when the link is weak, the introduction of RIS can lead to even more substantial performance enhancement. Also, RIS can be deployed to compensate for system performance degradation caused by channel aging and potentially lead to energy savings, while still achieving excellent performance. Intriguingly, due to the mutual coupling of RIS element and AP antenna correlations, RIS can effectively mitigate the negative effects caused by spatial correlation among AP antennas. Furthermore, we provide a practical rule-of-thumb guideline for designing resource block length, accounting for the impacts caused by channel aging.

An introduction of intelligent interconnectivity for people and things has posed higher demands and more challenges for sixth-generation (6G) networks, such as high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency (EE), ultralow latency, and ultrahigh reliability. Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), also called intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), are two promising technologies for coping with these unprecedented demands. Given their distinct capabilities, integrating the two technologies to further enhance wireless network performances has received great research and development attention. In this article, we provide a comprehensive survey of research on RIS-aided CF mMIMO wireless communication systems. We first introduce system models focusing on system architecture and application scenarios, channel models, and communication protocols. Subsequently, we summarize the relevant studies on system operation and resource allocation, providing in-depth analyses and discussions. Following this, we present practical challenges faced by RIS-aided CF mMIMO systems, particularly those introduced by RIS, such as hardware impairments (HIs) and electromagnetic interference (EMI). We summarize the corresponding analyses and solutions to further facilitate the implementation of RIS-aided CF mMIMO systems. Furthermore, we explore an interplay between RIS-aided CF mMIMO and other emerging 6G technologies, such as millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz), simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), next-generation multiple access (NGMA), and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Finally, we outline several research directions for future RIS-aided CF mMIMO systems.

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) are two promising technologies for realizing future beyond-fifth generation (B5G) networks. In this paper, we consider a practical spatially correlated RIS-aided CF massive MIMO system with multi-antenna access points (APs) over spatially correlated fading channels. Different from previous work, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) at RIS is considered to further characterize the system performance of the actual environment. Then, we derive the closed-form expression for the system spectral efficiency (SE) with the maximum ratio (MR) combining at the APs and the large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) at the central processing unit (CPU). Moreover, to counteract the near-far effect and EMI, we propose practical fractional power control (FPC) and max-min power control algorithms to further improve the system performance. We unveil the impact of EMI, channel correlations, and different signal processing methods on the uplink SE of user equipments (UEs). The accuracy of our derived analytical results is verified by extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. Our results show that the EMI can substantially degrade the SE, especially for those UEs with unsatisfactory channel conditions. Besides, increasing the number of RIS elements is always beneficial in terms of the SE, but with diminishing returns when the number of RIS elements is sufficiently large. Furthermore, the existence of spatial correlations among RIS elements can deteriorate the system performance when RIS is impaired by EMI.

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising network to offer huge improvement of the achievable rate compared with conventional cellular massive MIMO systems. However, the commonly adopted Shannon-type achievable rate is only valid in the long block length regime that is not applicable to the emerging short-packet communication. To realize ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) in cell-free massive MIMO systems, we optimize the precoding vector at the access points (APs) to maximize the minimum user rate in both the centralized and decentralized fashion. The design takes into account the impact of URLLC and we propose path-following algorithms (PFA) to address the considered problem which generates a sequence of advanced feasible points and converges to at least a locally optimal solution of the design problem. Moreover, we investigate the requirement of the precoding schemes, the length of the transmission duration, the number of antennas equipped at each AP, and the size of each AP cluster on the URLLC rate. Numerical results show that the decentralized PFA precoding can achieve 80% of the 95%-likely URLLC rate of the centralized precoding and 89% of the average URLLC rate with only 12% computational complexity of the centralized precoding.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) are emerging alternative antibacterial approaches. However, due to the lack of selectivity of photosensitizers for pathogenic bacteria, these methods often show more or less different degrees of in vivotoxicity. Moreover, it is difficult for PDT to exert effective antibacterial effects against anaerobic infections due to the oxygen deficiency. As one of the major anaerobic pathogens in oral infections, Porphyromonas gingivalis(P. gingivalis) acquires iron and porphyrin mainly from hemoglobin in the host. Hence, we developed a nanophotosensitizer named as oxyHb@IR820 through stable complexation between oxyhemoglobin and IR820, which is a photosensitizer possessing both PTT and PDT performance, for fighting P. gingivalisoral infection specifically and efficiently. Owing to hydrophobic interaction, oxyHb@IR820 had much stronger photoabsorption at 808 nm than free IR820, and thus exhibited significantly enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency. As an oxygen donor, oxyHb played an important role in enhancing the photodynamic efficiency of oxyHb@IR820. More importantly, oxyHb@IR820 showed efficient and specific uptake in P. gingivalisand exerted synergistic PTT/PDT performance against P. gingivalisand oral infection in golden hamsters. In summary, this study provides an efficient strategy for delivering photosensitizers specifically to P. gingivalisand augmenting antibacterial PDT against anaerobic infections.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), an emerging approach that involves photosensitizers, light, and molecular oxygen, has shown promise for fighting periodontitis. However, PDT does not always acquire the desired therapeutic outcomes since some photosensitizers have strong hydrophobic properties and are difficult to absorb efficiently by periodontal pathogenic bacteria. Here, a hydrophobic photosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) was hydrophilically modified via conjugation with TAT peptide, a cationic cell-penetrating peptide, to improve its solubility and enhance its bacterial adsorption by promoting its interaction with the negatively charged cell walls and penetration through the cell membranes. The obtained TAT-Ce6 conjugate (TAT-Ce6) was used to prepare self-assembled nanoparticles (NPs) for loading tinidazole (TDZ), a clinically used antibiotic agent, thus hoping to achieve synergistic antiperiodontitis effects through combining PDT and antibiotic therapy. Compared to free Ce6, TAT-Ce6 nanoparticles (TAT-Ce6 NPs) had greatly enhanced adsorption and penetration abilities for periodontal pathogen bacteria and also exhibited significantly increased PDT efficiencies in both periodontal pathogen bacteria and monocyte macrophages. Upon 635 nm laser irradiation, TDZ-loaded TAT-Ce6 (TAT-Ce6/TDZ) NPs exerted remarkable synergistic antiperiodontitis effects of PDT and antibiotic therapy, reflecting in the effective killing of periodontal pathogenic bacteria in vitro and the reduced adsorption of alveolar bone in the Sprague–Dawley rat model of periodontitis. Altogether, this study develops a novel photosensitizer that can be efficiently absorbed by the periodontal pathogenic bacteria and also provides a potent combination strategy of PDT with antibiotic therapy for clinical periodontitis treatment.
