This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the constitutive relationship of stainless steel reinforcement and proposes new material models for both austenitic and duplex stainless steel bars. These are an advancement on existing models which have largely been developed for structural stainless steel plate, rather than for reinforcement bars. Current design guidance for material modelling of reinforcing bars does not include representative stress-strain relationships which capture the unique mechanical properties of stainless steel reinforcement. Codes include idealised elastic-plastic material models which are inappropriate and inefficient for the highly nonlinear and ductile material response of stainless steel. The present study aims to address this issue by first conducting a series of tensile tests to ascertain the stress-strain material responses and then employing this data to examine the validity of existing approaches and propose new material models where required. It is shown that new material models are required and those that are developed are able to accurately capture the stress-strain response of stainless steel reinforcement, and provide a better, more accurate, representation than existing methods.

Demolition waste and cement production is responsible for 36 % of total waste produced on earth and 8 % of the worlds CO2emissions, respectively. Due to limited research on concrete mixes containing ternary cementitious mixes (Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS) and Silica Fume (SF)) and demolition waste, the paper reviewed the mechanical properties of concrete, and structural performance of reinforced beams. Thereafter, life cycle analysis (LCA) was investigated to understand the true environmental impact, focusing on Global Warming Potential (GWP). Results show that recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) had no significant negative impact on the compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of rupture of concrete. The inclusion of GGBS and SF in mixes containing RCA eliminated any negative impact and for all mixes produced greater strengths in comparison to the control mix, due to the secondary reaction of Ca (OH)2and pore refinement. The flexural behaviour of the concrete beams with 0 %, 25 %, 50 % and 100 % RCA, 25 % GGBS and 5 % SF is similar. LCA results showed that replacing NA with 25 %, 50 % or 100 % RCA has no significant impact on the GWP emissions. This is because of the similar emissions associated with manufacturing and processing of recycled and natural aggregates. However, replacing cement with 5 % SF and 25 % GGBS improves the GWP environmental response of concrete significantly. Additionally, natural aggregates have a higher GWP contribution than that of recycled concrete aggregates by almost 80 % since the process of NA required quarry operation and transportation while the RCA are produced on site from an existing building waste.

Mechanical components are frequently subjected to severe cyclic pressure and/or temperature loadings. Therefore, numerical and analytical low cycle fatigue methods become widely used in the field of engineering to estimate the design fatigue lives. The primary aim of this work is to evaluate the accuracy of the most commonly used numerical and analytical low cycle fatigue life methods for specimens made of 316 LN austenitic stainless steel and subjected to fully reversed uniaxial tension–compression loading, in the room temperature condition. It was found that both maximum shear strain and Brown–Miller criterions result in a very conservative estimation for uniaxially loaded specimens. However, maximum shear strain criteria provide better results compared to the Brown–Miller criteria. The total strain energy density approach was also used, and both the Masing and non-Masing analysis were adopted in this study. It is found that the Masing model provides conservative fatigue lives, and non-Masing model results in a more realistic fatigue life prediction for 316 LN stainless steel for both low and high strain amplitudes. The fatigue design curves obtained from the commonly used analytical low cycle fatigue equations were reexamined for 316 LN SS. The obtained design curves from Langer model and its modified versions are nonconservative for this type of material. Consequently, the authors suggest new optimized parameters to fit the given test data. The obtained curve using the currently suggested parameters is in better agreement with the experimental data for 316 LN SS.

The local strains obtained from the best-known analytical approximations, namely, Neuber's rule, equivalent strain energy density method, and linear rule, were compared with those resulting from finite element analysis. It was found that apart from Neuber's rule with the elastic stress concentration factor Kt, all the aforementioned analytical methods underestimate the local strains for all notch root radius, strain amplitude levels, at room temperature and 550 °C. Neuber's rule with Kt slightly overestimates the maximum strains for lower notch root radius, namely, 1.25 mm, at high temperature. Based on the analytically and numerically obtained notch root strains, the fatigue lives were estimated using the Coffin–Manson–Basquin equation. Besides, a numerical assessment of fatigue lives was made based on Brown–Miller and maximum shear strain multi-axial fatigue life criteria. It was found that all these methods provide inaccurate fatigue life results for all notch root radius, strain amplitude level, and under both temperatures conditions. Therefore, a new method was suggested, for which only the applied strain amplitude is needed to calculate the fatigue life of notched components. It was revealed that the suggested method provides a good fatigue life prediction at a higher temperature loading state.
