BackgroundMiddle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization is a promising intervention as a stand-alone or adjunct treatment to surgery in patients with chronic subdural hematomas. There are currently no large animal models for selective access and embolization of the MMA for preclinical evaluation of this endovascular modality. Our objective was to introduce a novel in vivo model of selective MMA embolization in swine.MethodsDiagnostic cerebral angiography with selective microcatheter catheterization into the MMA was performed under general anesthesia in five swine. Anatomical variants in arterial meningeal supply were examined. In two animals, subsequent embolization of the MMA with a liquid embolic agent (Onyx-18) was performed, followed by brain tissue harvest and histological analysis.ResultsThe MMA was consistently localized as a branch of the internal maxillary artery just distal to the origin of the ascending pharyngeal artery. Additional meningeal supply was observed from the external ophthalmic artery, although not present consistently. MMA embolization with Onyx was technically successful and feasible. Histological analysis showed Onyx material within the MMA lumen.ConclusionsMicrocatheter access into the MMA in swine with liquid embolic agent delivery represents a reproducible model of MMA embolization. Anatomical variations in the distribution of arterial supply to the meninges exist. This model has a potential application for comparing therapeutic effects of various embolic agents in a preclinical setting that closely resembles the MMA embolization procedure in humans.

ABSTRACTWhat other locations are like my neighborhood? How? Why? The heart of many spatial analyses is in finding similarities or dissimilarities between locations. Discovering patterns and interpreting similarity is a complicated process that is based on both the spatial characteristics and the semantics or meaning that we assign to place. Human conceptualization of similarity in locations is multi-faceted and cannot be captured with a simple assessment of single numeric attributes like population density or median income; however, these quantifiable attributes are the basis for an initial pass of sense-making. MixMapfacilitates the incorporation of similarity measures and spatial analytics to provide an information reduction (or semantic generalization) that brings the user closer to actionable insights. Through a preliminary evaluation of MixMap, we found that the tool supports the geospatial inquiry of determining similarity between regions, where participants can manipulate individual weights of the various attributes describing these locations. Based on feedback and observations from the study, we discuss potential implications and considerations for exploring the role of context and additional place-specific parameters for computing similarity, as well as understanding the nuances of semantics for place similarity in geospatial analysis tools.

Both phosphors and quantum dots are currently used in liquid crystal displays (LCDs), with GE's KSF narrow red phosphor demonstrating the best possible red color point, reliability, and efficiency. Next generation miniLED and microLED based displays require excellent color quality (gamut) and high brightness which will require color conversion materials with high EQE and narrow emission peaks. Here we describe recent advancements in submicron narrow‐band phosphors which are being implemented in next‐generation miniLED displays, and being considered for enabling full‐color microLED and luminescent color filter displays of the future due to their excellent optical performance and robust nature.

Dashboards are no longer mere static displays of metrics; through functionality such as interaction and storytelling, they have evolved to support analytic and communicative goals like monitoring and reporting. Existing dashboard design guidelines, however, are often unable to account for this expanded scope as they largely focus on best practices for visual design. In contrast, we frame dashboard design as facilitating an analytical conversation: a cooperative, interactive experience where a user may interact with, reason about, or freely query the underlying data. By drawing on established principles of conversational flow and communication, we define the concept of a cooperative dashboard as one that enables a fruitful and productive analytical conversation, and derive a set of 39 dashboard design heuristics to support effective analytical conversations. To assess the utility of this framing, we asked 52 computer science and engineering graduate students to apply our heuristics to critique and design dashboards as part of an ungraded, opt-in homework assignment. Feedback from participants demonstrates that our heuristics surface new reasons dashboards may fail, and encourage a more fluid, supportive, and responsive style of dashboard design. Our approach suggests several compelling directions for future work, including dashboard authoring tools that better anticipate conversational turn-taking, repair, and refinement and extending cooperative principles to other analytical workflows.

We propose a framework to extract and binarize handwritten content in lecture videos. The extracted content could potentially be used to index video collections powering content-based search and navigation within lecture videos helping students and educators across the world. A deep learning pipeline is used to detect handwritten text, formulae and sketches and then binarize the extracted content. We exploit the spatio-temporal structure of our binarized detections to compute associativity information of content across all video frames. This information is later used to segment the video. Experiments are conducted to compare the performance of key components of our framework in isolation, as well as the impact on overall performance, with respect to existing methods. We evaluate our framework on the publicly available AccessMath lecture video dataset obtaining an f-measure of $$94.32\%$$94.32%for binary connected components. Code for the framework (including trained weights) and summarization will be released.

Recent work has shown that when both the chart and caption emphasize the same aspects of the data, readers tend to remember the doubly-emphasized features as takeaways; when there is a mismatch, readers rely on the chart to form takeaways and can miss information in the caption text. Through a survey of 280 chart-caption pairs in real-world sources (e.g., news media, poll reports, government reports, academic articles, and Tableau Public), we find that captions often do not emphasize the same information in practice, which could limit how effectively readers take away the authors' intended messages. Motivated by the survey findings, we present EMPHASISCHECKER, an interactive tool that highlights visually prominent chart features as well as the features emphasized by the caption text along with any mismatches in the emphasis. The tool implements a time-series prominent feature detector based on the Ramer-Douglas-Peucker algorithm and a text reference extractor that identifies time references and data descriptions in the caption and matches them with chart data. This information enables authors to compare features emphasized by these two modalities, quickly see mismatches, and make necessary revisions. A user study confirms that our tool is both useful and easy to use when authoring charts and captions.

AbstractAedes aegyptiis the target for repellents to curb incidences of vector-borne diseases. Stopping breeding of this mosquito species at its larval stages helps in controlling spread of insect-borne diseases. Therefore, the present study focused on deciphering the mechanism of interaction of selected natural actives against larval proteins of A. aegyptito identify potential natural alternative larvicides. 65 larval proteins were identified from literature, whose structures were modelled and validated using RaptorX and ProCheck. 11 natural actives were selected for predicting their ligand properties and toxicities via Toxicity Estimation Software Tool and ProTox-II. Molecular docking studies were carried out using POAP followed by 100 ns molecular dynamic simulation studies for top three best docked complexes to better understand the robustness of docking, complex stabilities and molecular mechanisms of interactions. Toxicity predictions revealed that 6 molecules belonged to toxicity class 4, and five to toxicity class 5, implying that they were all safe to use. Complexes goniothalamin-translation elongation factor (−10 kcal/mol), andrographolide-acetyl-CoA C-myristoyltransferase (−9.2 kcal/mol) and capillin-translation elongation factor (−8.4 kcal/mol) showed best binding energies. When simulated, capillin-translation elongation factor showed most stability, while the remaining two also evidenced robust docking. Evolutionary studies for top two larval proteins disclosed 100 other insect species in which these proteins can be targeted using various larvicides. Protein-protein interaction network analysis revealed several protein pathways that might be affected due to aforesaid naturals. Therefore, this study provides computational insights into the molecular interaction of naturals against larval proteins, acting as potential natural larvicides.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD)–induced hemodynamics are characterized by fast-moving flow with large variations in velocity, making quantitative assessments difficult with existing imaging methods. This study demonstrates the ability of 1,000 fps high-speed angiography (HSA) to quantify the effect of the surgical implantation angle of a LVAD outflow graft on the hemodynamics within the ascending aorta in vitro. High-speed angiography was performed on patient-derived, three-dimensional–printed optically opaque aortic models using a nonsoluble contrast media, ethiodol, as a flow tracer. Outflow graft configuration angles of 45° and 90° with respect to the central aortic axis were considered. Projected velocity distributions were calculated from the high-speed experimental sequences using two methods: a physics-based optical flow algorithm and tracking of radio-opaque particles. Particle trajectories were also used to evaluate accumulated shear stress. Results were then compared with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to confirm the results of the high-speed imaging method. Flow patterns derived from HSA coincided with the impingement regions and recirculation zones formed in the aortic root as seen in the CFD for both graft configurations. Compared with the 45° graft, the 90° configuration resulted in 81% higher two-dimensional–projected velocities (over 100 cm/s) along the contralateral wall of the aorta. Both graft configurations suggest elevated accumulated shear stresses along individual trajectories. Compared with CFD simulations, HSA successfully characterized the fast-moving flow and hemodynamics in each LVAD graft configuration in vitro, demonstrating the potential utility of this technology as a quantitative imaging modality.

While visualizations are an effective way to represent insights about information, they rarely stand alone. When designing a visualization, text is often added to provide additional context and guidance for the reader. However, there is little experimental evidence to guide designers as to what is the right amount of text to show within a chart, what its qualitative properties should be, and where it should be placed. Prior work also shows variation in personal preferences for charts versus textual representations. In this paper, we explore several research questions about the relative value of textual components of visualizations. 302 participants ranked univariate line charts containing varying amounts of text, ranging from no text (except for the axes) to a written paragraph with no visuals. Participants also described what information they could take away from line charts containing text with varying semantic content. We find that heavily annotated charts were not penalized. In fact, participants preferred the charts with the largest number of textual annotations over charts with fewer annotations or text alone. We also find effects of semantic content. For instance, the text that describes statistical or relational components of a chart leads to more takeaways referring to statistics or relational comparisons than text describing elemental or encoded components. Finally, we find different effects for the semantic levels based on the placement of the text on the chart; some kinds of information are best placed in the title, while others should be placed closer to the data. We compile these results into four chart design guidelines and discuss future implications for the combination of text and charts.

The language for expressing comparisons is often complex and nuanced, making supporting natural language-based visual comparison a non-trivial task. To better understand how people reason about comparisons in natural language, we explore a design space of utterances for comparing data entities. We identified different parameters of comparison utterances that indicate what is being compared (i.e., data variables and attributes) as well as how these parameters are specified (i.e., explicitly or implicitly). We conducted a user study with sixteen data visualization experts and non-experts to investigate how they designed visualizations for comparisons in our design space. Based on the rich set of visualization techniques observed, we extracted key design features from the visualizations and synthesized them into a subset of sixteen representative visualization designs. We then conducted a follow-up study to validate user preferences for the sixteen representative visualizations corresponding to utterances in our design space. Findings from these studies suggest guidelines and future directions for designing natural language interfaces and recommendation tools to better support natural language comparisons in visual analytics.

Despite the ever-growing popularity of dashboards across a wide range of domains, their authoring still remains a tedious and complex process. Current tools offer considerable support for creating individual visualizations but provide limited support for discovering groups of visualizations that can be collectively useful for composing analytic dashboards. To address this problem, we present Medley, a mixed-initiative interface that assists in dashboard composition by recommending dashboard collections (i.e., a logically grouped set of views and filtering widgets) that map to specific analytical intents. Users can specify dashboard intents (namely, measure analysis, change analysis, category analysis, or distribution analysis) explicitly through an input panel in the interface or implicitly by selecting data attributes and views of interest. The system recommends collections based on these analytic intents, and views and widgets can be selected to compose a variety of dashboards. Medley also provides a lightweight direct manipulation interface to configure interactions between views in a dashboard. Based on a study with 13 participants performing both targeted and open-ended tasks, we discuss how Medley's recommendations guide dashboard composition and facilitate different user workflows. Observations from the study identify potential directions for future work, including combining manual view specification with dashboard recommendations and designing natural language interfaces for dashboard authoring.

Background The majority of prostate cancers harbor gene fusions of the 5'-untranslated region of the androgen-regulated transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) promoter with erythroblast transformation--specific transcription factor family members. The common fusion between TMPRESS2 and v-ets erythroblastosis virus E26 oncogene homolog (avian) (ERG) is associated with a more aggressive clinical phenotype, implying the existence of a distinct subclass of prostate cancer defined by this fusion. Methods We used complementary DNA--mediated annealing, selection, ligation, and extension to determine the expression profiles of 6144 transcriptionally informative genes in archived biopsy samples from 455 prostate cancer patients in the Swedish Watchful Waiting cohort (1987-1999) and the United States-based Physicians' Health Study cohort (1983-2003). A gene expression signature for prostate cancers with the TMPRSS2--ERG fusion was determined using partitioning and classification models and used in computational functional analysis. Cell proliferation and TMPRSS2--ERG expression in androgen receptor-negative (NCI-H660) prostate cancer cells after treatment with vehicle or estrogenic compounds were assessed by viability assays and quantitative polymerase chain reaction, respectively. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results We identified an 87-gene expression signature that distinguishes TMPRSS2--ERG fusion prostate cancer as a discrete molecular entity (area under the curve = 0.80, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.792 to 0.81; P < .001). Computational analysis suggested that this fusion signature was associated with estrogen receptor (ER) signaling. Viability of NCI-H660 cells decreased after treatment with estrogen (viability normalized to day 0, estrogen vs vehicle at day 8, mean = 2.04 vs 3.40, difference = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.12 to 1.62) or ER[beta] agonist (ER[beta] agonist vs vehicle at day 8, mean = 1.86 vs 3.40, difference = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.39 to 1.69) but increased after ER[alpha] agonist treatment (ER[alpha] agonist vs vehicle at day 8, mean = 4.36 vs 3.40, difference = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.68 to 1.23). Similarly, expression of TMPRSS2--ERG decreased after ER[beta] agonist treatment (fold change over internal control, ER[beta] agonist vs vehicle at 24 hours, NCI-H660, mean = 0.57- vs 1.0-fold, difference = 0.43-fold, 95% CI = 0.29- to 0.57-fold) and increased after ER[alpha] agonist treatment (ER[alpha] agonist vs vehicle at 24 hours, mean = 5.63- vs 1.0-fold, difference = 4.63-fold, 95% CI = 4.34- to 4.92-fold). Conclusions TMPRSS2--ERG fusion prostate cancer is a distinct molecular subclass. TMPRSS2--ERG expression is regulated by a novel ER-dependent mechanism.

An Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is an organized system for the provision of care to critically ill patients that provides intensive and specialized medical and nursing care, an enhanced capacity for monitoring, and multiple modalities of physiologic organ support to sustain life during a period of life-threatening organ system insufficiency. While this availability of trained manpower and specialized equipment makes it possible to care for critically ill patients, it also presents singular challenges in the form of man and material management, design concerns, budgetary concerns, and protocolization of treatment. Consequently, the establishment of an ICU requires rigorous design and planning, a process that can take months to years. However, the Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) epidemic has required the significant capacity building to accommodate the increased number of critically ill patients. At the peak of the pandemic, many countries were forced to resort to the building of temporary structures to house critically ill patients, to help tide over the crisis. This narrative review describes the challenges and lessons learned while establishing a 250 bedded ICU in a temporary structure and achieving functionality within a period of a fortnight.

Background: Endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) by flow diverter (FD) stents depends on flow modification. Patient-specific modeling of FD deployment and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) could enable a priori endovascular strategy optimization. We developed a fast, simplistic, expansion-free balls-weeping algorithm to model FDs in patientspecific aneurysm geometry. However, since such strong simplification could result in less accurate simulations, we also developed a fast virtual stenting workflow (VSW) that explicitly models stent expansion using pseudo-physical forces. Methods: To test which of these two fast algorithms more accurately simulates real FDs, we applied them to virtually treat three representative patient-specific IAs. We deployed Pipeline Embolization Device into 3 patient-specific silicone aneurysm phantoms and simulated the treatments using both balls-weeping and VSW algorithms in computational aneurysm models. We then compared the virtually deployed FD stents against experimental results in terms of geometry and post-treatment flow fields. For stent geometry, we evaluated gross configurations and porosity. For post-treatment aneurysmal flow, we compared CFD results against experimental measurements by particle image velocimetry. Results: We found that VSW created more realistic FD deployments than balls-weeping in terms of stent geometry, porosity and pore density. In particular, balls-weeping produced unrealistic FD bulging at the aneurysm neck, and this artifact drastically increased with neck size. Both FD deployment methods resulted in similar flow patterns, but the VSW had less error in flow velocity and inflow rate. Conclusion: In conclusion, modeling stent expansion is critical for preventing unrealistic bulging effects and thus should be considered in virtual FD deployment algorithms. Also endowed with its high computational efficiency and superior accuracy, the VSW algorithm is a better candidate for implementation into a bedside clinical tool for FD deployment simulation.

IMPORTANCE: Ibuprofen is an effective analgesic after tonsillectomy alone or tonsillectomy with adenoidectomy, but concerns remain about whether it increases postoperative hemorrhage. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of ibuprofen compared with acetaminophen on posttonsillectomy bleeding (PTB) requiring surgical intervention in children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A multicenter, randomized, double-blind noninferiority trial was conducted at 4 tertiary medical centers (Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston; Naval Medical Center, San Diego, California; Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia; Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, Washington). A total of 1832 children were assessed for eligibility (presence of sleep-disordered breathing or obstructive sleep apnea, adenotonsillar hypertrophy, or infectious tonsillitis undergoing extracapsular tonsillectomy by electrocautery). Of these, 1091 were excluded because they did not meet eligibility criteria (n = 681) or refused to participate (n = 410); thus, 741 children aged 2 to 18 years undergoing tonsillectomy alone or tonsillectomy with adenoidectomy were enrolled between May 3, 2012, and January 20, 2017. INTERVENTIONS: Participants were randomized to receive ibuprofen, 10 mg/kg (n = 372), or acetaminophen, 15 mg/kg (n = 369), every 6 hours for the first 9 postoperative days. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Rate and severity of posttonsillectomy bleeding were recorded using a postoperative bleeding severity scale: type 1 (bleeds that were observed at home or evaluated in the emergency department without further intervention), type 2 (bleeds that required readmission for observation), and type 3 (bleeds that required a return to the operating room for control of hemorrhage). Type 3 bleeding was the main outcome measure. The noninferiority margin was set at 3%, and modified intention-to-treat analysis was used. RESULTS: Of the 741 children enrolled, 688 children (92.8%) (median [interquartile range] age, 5 [4] years; 366 boys [53.2%]) received the study medication and were included in a modified intention-to-treat analysis. The rate of bleeding requiring operative intervention was 1.2% in the acetaminophen group and 2.9% in the ibuprofen group (difference, 1.7%; 97.5% CI upper limit, 3.8%; P = .12 for noninferiority). There were no significant adverse events or deaths. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study could not exclude a higher rate of severe bleeding in children receiving ibuprofen after tonsillectomy alone or tonsillectomy with adenoidectomy. This finding should be considered when selecting a postoperative analgesic regimen. Further studies are needed to understand if bleeding risk is affected when ibuprofen is used for a shorter duration or in combination with acetaminophen for postoperative analgesia. We discuss the performance of GE's new green phosphors for wide color gamut in liquid crystal displays. These new phosphors are combined with GE's K2SiF6:Mn4+(KSF/PFS) red phosphor to increase color gamut by >5% versus standard KSF/β‐SiAlON:Eu2+phosphor blends. Other phosphor performance metrics such as response time, thermal quenching, and environmental stability will also be discussed.

BackgroundThe amount of force applied on a device is an important measure to evaluate the endovascular and surgical device manipulations. The measure has not been evaluated for neuroenodvascular procedures.PurposeWe aimed to study the use of force measure as a novel approach to test distal access catheter (DAC) performance during catheterization of cervical and intracranial vessels using patient specific 3-dimentional (3D) phantoms.MethodsUsing patient specific 3D phantoms of the cervical and intracranial circulation, we recorded measure of force required to deliver three types of DACs beyond the ophthalmic segment of the internal carotid artery. Six different combinations of DAC–microcatheter–guidewire were tested. We intentionally included what we considered suboptimal combinations of DACs, microcatheters, and guidewires during our experiments to test the feasibility of measuring force under different conditions. A six axis force sensor was secured to the DAC with an adjustable torque used to track axially directed push and pull forces required to navigate the DAC to the target site.ResultsIn a total of 55 experiments, we found a significant difference in the amount of force used between different DACs (mean force for DAC A, 1.887±0.531N; for DAC B, 2.153±1.280 N; and for DAC C, 1.194±0.521 N, P=0.007). There was also a significant difference in force measures among the six different catheter systems (P=0.035).ConclusionsSignificant difference in the amount of force used between different DACs and catheter systems were recorded. Use of force measure in neuroendovascular procedures on 3D printed phantoms is feasible.

In this report, we discuss the effect of synthesis on the concentration quenching of K2SiF6:Mn4+ phosphors. Comparing two different synthesis methods, we demonstrate that Mn concentration can be increased by a factor of three before the onset of concentration quenching. These effects are analyzed using literature models for concentration quenching that show that large reductions in defect concentrations are responsible for the improvements in concentration quenching along with a possible change in the mechanism behind concentration quenching. The practical implications for LED packages using high Mn4+ concentration K2SiF6:Mn4+ phosphor with high quantum efficiencies are also discussed along with suggestions about pitfalls in the analysis of concentration quenching.

BackgroundDespite advances in revascularization tools for large vessel occlusion presenting as acute ischemic stroke, a significant subset of clots remain recalcitrant to current strategies. We assessed the effectiveness of a novel thrombectomy device that was specifically designed to retrieve resistant fibrin rich clots, the geometric clot extractor (GCE; Neuravi, Galway, Ireland), in an in vitro cerebrovascular occlusion stroke model.MethodsAfter introducing fibrin rich clot analogues into the middle cerebral artery of the model, we compared the rates of recanalization between GCE and Solitaire flow restoration stent retriever (SR; Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; control group) cases. A maximum of three passes of each device was allowed. If the SR failed to recanalize the vessel after three passes, one pass of the GCE was allowed (rescue cases).ResultsIn a total of 26 thrombectomy cases (13 GCE, 13 SR), successful recanalization (Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction score of 2b or 3) was achieved 100% of the time in the GCE cases with an average of 2.13 passes per case. This rate was significantly higher compared with the Solitaire recanalization rate (7.7%, P<0.0001) with an average of three passes per case. After SR failure (in 92% of cases), successful one pass GCE rescue recanalization was achieved 66% of the time (P<0.005).ConclusionApplication of the GCE in this experimental stroke model to retrieve typically recalcitrant fibrin rich clots resulted in higher successful recanalization rates than the SR.
