Introduction: Osteotomy of the greater trochanter is a commonly used procedure in complex revision hip arthroplasty in order to achieve a wide exposure to the femoral stem and acetabular components. There is no clinical evidence in favour of a specific fixation method. The aim of this study was to compare cable-plate with figure-of-eight cerclage wire fixation in patients requiring a trochanteric “slide” osteotomy.Material and methods: In a retrospective study, 51 greater trochanteric “slide” osteotomies in complex acetabular revision arthroplasties were included. Patients were divided into 2 groups: 28 hips were fixed with 1 of 2 cable-plate systems (Dall-Miles staple, Stryker or Cable-Ready plate, Zimmer) and 23 with a figure-of-eight cerclage wire. Consolidation, osteolysis, migration of greater trochanter, bursitis of the trochanteric area, Trendelenburg gait and removal of osteosynthesis material were studied at 6 months follow-up.Results: Both groups showed good union rates. The lysis rate was similar with 32% in the cable-plate group versus 29% in the cerclage wire group (p= 0.084). 43% of the hips with cable-plate and 22% of the cerclage wire had trochanteric migration (p= 0.297). Pain at the greater trochanter was less frequent in the cerclage wire group (9%) as compared to the cable-plate group (43%) (p= 0.007). Implant removal was more frequent in the cable-plate group (4 vs. 0 patients). Trendelenburg gait was found in 3 patients in the cerclage wire group as compared to 10 in the cable-plate group (p= 0.054).Conclusions: The cerclage wiring had superior clinical outcomes with similar radiographic results. The authors recommend the use of figure-of-eight cerclage wire when fixing a greater trochanteric “slide” osteotomy in complex revision hip arthroplasty.

In an interdisciplinary service-learning project, students from the Universitat de Barcelona held a series of workshops and lectures for secondary-school students. Lectures related to healthcare and education were offered within the framework of Community Nursing, a 3rd-year subject in the bachelor's degree programme in Nursing. The objectives were to share knowledge between university students and secondary-school students on topics of mutual interest for their training, to develop health education skills and teamwork skills.

La incidencia y causas que pueden hacer finalizar de manera anticipada (sin finalizar el mapeo cortical/subcortical) la cirugía con paciente despierto para mapeo del lenguaje son poco conocidas. Se ha estudiado una serie de 41 pacientes con glioma en área del lenguaje en los que se ha realizado craneotomía y mapeo del lenguaje bajo sedación consciente. En 6 pacientes se tuvo que finalizar la cirugía de manera anticipada. Las causas fueron: crisis tónico-clónica (1), falta de colaboración por cansancio/sueño (4) con afectación o no en la articulación de la palabra, disminución del nivel de consciencia en contexto de encefalopatía por amonio que obligó a la intubación orotraqueal (1). Hay causas de finalización anticipada de la cirugía que podrían preverse y en algunos casos evitarse. La extensión de la lesión, la presencia de una afasia preoperatoria, el tratamiento con valproato y el tipo de anestesia empleado son variables a considerar para evitar el fracaso de la cirugía con paciente despierto para mapeo del lenguaje. Ante los resultados obtenidos, se proponen las siguientes medidas: l) si la lesión es extensa realizar la cirugía en dos tiempos para evitar el cansancio, 2) si el paciente presenta afectación del lenguaje previa, no utilizar sedación durante la cirugía para evitar que la somnolencia empeore la articulación de la palabra, 3) en pacientes en tratamiento con valproato habría que descartar que la sintomatología preoperatoria no se deba a una encefalopatía por amonio.

For decades, Participatory Action Research (PAR) has been extended as a scientific praxis applied in different contexts, characterised by the involvement of participating groups and oriented towards social transformation. However, there is a certain dialectical tension between those approaches that emphasise the method versus those that emphasise the pursuit of social change from a decolonial perspective. This article questions how this praxis is reflected in scientific transfer, analysing not only the development and scope of scientific production in PAR, but also how the academy may reproduce relations inherent to coloniality in this transfer. To this end, the production on PAR hosted on the Web of Science (WoS) is collected, and a bibliometric analysis is performed by applying descriptive and relational techniques using VosViewer software. The study concludes that scientific production has not stopped growing and that the areas of knowledge where it is applied have diversified. However, it also points out how the knowledge production model reproduces the power relations of coloniality, affecting PAR’s transfer. This analysis can contribute to the debate on a scientific approach oriented to improve processes of social transformation.

Protein, carbohydrate and lipid amounts were determined for several rotifer species collected directly from the field. Brachionus calyciflorus was the most abundant species; therefore making possible more data for it. An increase in protein content of this species occurred when its concentration in food (µg protein/ml) also increased. Keratella tropica showed a similar pattern, but Asplanchna brightwelli did not.

Abstract: The origin of allochthonous soluble polyphenols in the water of the temporary ponds of Doana National Park during flood and heavy rainfall was examined. Soil and litter samples were found to leach large quantities of polyphenolic compounds. The concentration of these compounds showed a significant correlation with the organic content of the soil samples, but indicated no correlation with the litter samples. Rain simulation tests proved that fresh vegetation leached soluble polyphenolic compounds. Mediterranean scrub (Cystaceae) from dry poor-nutrient soils yielded the highest concentration (being furthest away from the ponds), whereas wetland (Ericaceae) and littoral vegetation (Juncaceae and Cyperaceae) rated second and third, respectively. The potential of the surrounding vegetation to leach high concentrations of polyphenolic compounds suggests that this is the main source of the rapid polyphenolic enrichment of these ponds during periods of heavy rain.

The effect of temperature and salinity on resting egg size of two Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifers) clones was investigated. Clones were selected according to their different behaviour in laying resting eggs: one clone ejects them, whereas they remain inside the females body in the other clone. The difference in resting eggs size between the two clones is noticeable, although the difference is not as great as that between female body size. An important temperature-salinity interaction on resting egg size has been observed. The general inverse relationship between size and temperature is only true at lower temperatures. At high temperatures size varies around the mean although could be greater than at intermediate temperatures. This is more evident at the intermediate salinity tested which is considered to be the closest to the optimum in our experiments. This pattern of variation suggests that mean size is bigger than expected, in relation to temperature and salinity, when these factors have values close to the extremes of their range, normally found in nature, and to which adaptative mechanisms can evolve. Size is bigger at the salinity — temperature low - low and high - high combinations which are the most commonly found in the temperate environments.

Temporary ponds of Doñana are small, shallow water bodies with alkaline waters rich in Na+. Periodic wet and dry seasons force their biota to function within a wide range of physical and chemical conditions. The ponds are basically fed by ground water and by direct rainfall during rainy periods. Thus, they are largely influenced by water table fluctuations and groundwater chemical composition. These ponds are also subject to frequent allochthonous inputs of nutrients and organic matter from adjacent terrestrial ecosystems. Their dependence on groundwater feeding has recently led some ponds to an endangered situation.

Polyphenols extracted from wood, brown leaves and green leaves of the River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh., Myrtaceae) were inhibitory towards purified alkaline phosphatases from porcine intestinal mucosa (PIMAP) and Escherichia coli (ECAP), and inhibited alkaline phosphatase activity of various Australian rivers and billabongs. Brown-leaf extracts were generally more inhibitory than were green-leaf extracts, and polyphenols inhibited ECAP more than they did PIMAP. The threshold for inhibition of purified enzymes and most native enzymes ranged from < 2-10 mgl-1, which was within the range of polyphenol concentrations commonly found in freshwater environments. Mixed-type inhibition and competitive-type inhibition were the most frequent effects of polyphenols on the purified alkaline phosphatases. Enzyme activity was increased after the extracts were treated with polyvinylpolypyrrolidone to remove polyphenols, suggesting that the extracts contained substances that activated alkaline phosphatases. The addition of Mg+2 (0.003 to 2.0 mmol l-1) increased alkaline phosphatase activity, but this enhancement was progressively negated by the addition of polyphenols. In contrast, the addition of Zn+2 (0.1 mmol l-1) completely inhibite. PIMAP activity, and again this inhibition was progressively negated by the addition of polyphenols. Polyphenols therefore will affect phosphorus regeneration in freshwaters not only by binding directly to the alkaline phosphatase enzyme, but also by complexing metals required by the enzyme for activity.
