During a four-week air monitoring campaign in spring 1990, organic and Inorganic substances havebeen measured in Freiburg, in the southwest of Germany. NOy, S02, CO, 03, CnHmand total suspended particles (TSP) were monitored continuously, other substances were analysed from 24h-samples. Long range transport and local sources both influence the level of pollution at Freiburg, each contributing to different groups of substances. For example, a high-TSP event is caused by aeollan transport of Saharan dust, the dust consisting mainly of soil-related elements. High concentrations of pollutants on another date could be related to nearby emissions, identifying motor vehicles as the dominating source. Aromatic hydrocarbons (AHC) gave a typical pattern of motor vehicle emissions; by correlation analysis, NOycould be related to the same source as the AHC.
