Quality of life and loneliness are closely associated with mental and physical health outcomes. This relationship is particularly important in Veterans who experience elevated rates of disabilities, comorbidities, and chronic health conditions as compared with non-Veterans. In the present project, we use data from the Military Health and Well-Being Project (n= 1469, 67.2% men, 32.3% women, 0.5% transgender, nonbinary, prefer not to say) to investigate the link between five domains of quality of life (i.e., general quality of life, physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environment) with loneliness in American Military Veterans. Findings indicated that every domain of quality of life was negatively and significantly associated with loneliness (r's < −0.45, p's < 0.001), such that quality of life decreased as loneliness increased. We further found, using linear regression, that quality social relationships (β = −0.385, t= −13.23), psychological functioning (β = −0.196, t= −5.28), and physical health (β = −0.133, t= −4.174) were related to low levels of loneliness. Taken together, these findings indicate that in this sample of Veterans 1) general quality of life, physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environment are all strongly connected with loneliness, and 2) of these, social relationships, psychological health, and physical health seem to protect most against loneliness, with large robust effect sizes. We recommend that intervention and policy researchers continue to investigate and develop feasible, acceptable, and cost-effective ways to promote social relationships, psychological health, and physical health among Veterans. Data were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may limit generalizability of these findings.

AbstractObjectiveTo describe the development, application, and benefits of a set of common data elements (CDE) utilized by the Military Suicide Research Consortium (MSRC). Approach:Civilian and military suicide research experts selected items from measures representing a broad range of suicide-specific constructs, and created new items for certain constructs. The resulting CDE were included in the protocols of all studies funded by MSRC. Principal investigators upload their CDE to a secure repository available for use by other researchers. Results:The CDE have been found to be valid, reliable, and of use for multiple applications beyond the design of the parent studies which generated them. Conclusions:The MSRC CDE expand the information available to inform suicide prevention and intervention among military personnel. They also improve the quality of the suicide data available in support of the DoD’s goal of addressing the huge public health problem of suicide among service members.

A case of disseminated Balamuthiainfection is presented. Early diagnosis and initiation of recommended therapy are essential for increased chances of successful outcomes.

The article discusses several developments involving New York labor and employment laws between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012, focusing on topics such as the U.S. National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), transgender employees, and recess appointments by U.S. President Barack Obama. Several American statutes are examined, including the U.S. Family and Medical Leave Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Employment at will and New York, New York's human rights laws are also mentioned.

The nonlinear transmission and the excited-state absorption spectra of three fluorene derivatives exhibiting large two-photon absorptivity were measured by the third harmonic of a picosecond Nd:YAG laser. We analyzed their capability for exhibiting stimulated emission in polar solvents and found that asymmetrical fluorene compounds with a diphenylamino substituent exhibited large Stokes shifts (∼8000 cm^-1), high quantum yields (∼0.9 – 1.0), and no optical gain over their entire fluorescence spectral region. In contrast, a symmetrical fluorene derivative with vinylphenylbenzothiazole substituents in positions 2 and 7 underwent lasing under one-photon excitation by use of picosecond pulsed irradiation.

High-order multiphoton excitation processes are becoming a reality for fluorescence imaging and phototherapy treatment because they afford minimization of scattered light losses and a reduction of unwanted linear absorption in the living organism transparency window, making them less susceptible to photodamage, while improving the irradiation penetration depth and spatial resolution. We report the four-photon-excited fluorescence emission of (7-benzothiazol-2-yl-9,-didecylfluoren-2-yl)-diphenylamine in hexane and its four-photon absorption cross section σ_4′ = 8.1 × 10^-109 cm^8 s^3 photon^-3 for the transition S_0 ? S_1 when excited at 1600 nm with a tunable optical parametric generator (OPG) pumped by picosecond laser pulses. When pumped at 1200 nm, three-photon absorption was observed, corresponding to the same transition.

The quantum yields of the photochemical reactions of 9,9-didecyl-2,7-bisN,N-diphenylaminofluorene have been determined in hexane and CH2Cl2under one-photon linear and near-IR two-photon nonlinear absorption conditions. The photochemical decomposition proceeds by a first-order reaction and is independent of the type of excitation one- or two-photon. In hexane solution, the quantum yields of the photoreactions are in the range 2–5 × 10−4and increase dramatically to 10−2in CH2Cl2. The predominant mechanisms of the photoreactions and the photoproducts products which result were investigated viaUV-visible absorption, fluorescence, and excitation anisotropy spectral methods.

Steady-state excitation anisotropy, lifetimes, and time-resolved emission spectra of new 2-photon absorbing fluorene derivatives were measured in aprotic solvents at room temperature. Excitation anisotropy spectra in viscous silicon oil allowed the determination of the spectral position of three electronic transitions S0→ S1, S0→ S2, S0→ S3(Si, i = 1, 2, 3 are the singlet electronic states) and the angles (≅ 30°) between absorption S0→ S1and emission S1→ S0dipole moments for the first electronic transition. Solvate relaxation processes in the first excited state of the investigated fluorene molecules affect the lifetimes of these states, τ1, so that experimental values of τ1do not correspond to those calculated by Strickler and Berg theory. The influence of the molecular concentration on the fluorescence quantum yields and τ1have been investigated.

Non-resonant two-photon absorption (TPA) can be defined as the simultaneous absorption of two photons, via a virtual state, in a medium. TPA exhibits a quadratic dependence of absorption on the incident light intensity, resulting in highly localized photoexcitation. Recent developments in the design and synthesis of efficient, stable TPA organic materials are discussed. Microfabrication via two-photon induced free radical polymerization of acrylate monomers and cationic polymerization of epoxide monomers was accomplished using commercially available photoinitiators, and also a custom-made compound possessing high two-photon absorptivity. Two-photon facilitated photoisomerization of a fulgide in solution and in a polymer thin film demonstrated two-photon induced photochromism and its application in interferometric image recording, respectively. Greatly enhanced signal-to-noise ratios and resolution were achieved in the non-destructive three-dimensional two-photon fluorescence imaging of a polymer-coated substrate versus conventional single-photon laser scanning confocal microscopic imaging. Multifunctional TPA organic materials and fabrication of functional microstructures are also discussed. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The synthesis and characterization of a new class of electron donor-acceptor substituted stilbenes bearing a phosphonate ester as the electron-withdrawing functionality is described. Phosphorylation of aromatic rings was accomplished using Ni-catalyzed Arbuzov reactions, while Pd-catalyzed Heck-type coupling reactions were employed to construct the stilbene derivatives. Through determination of an electro-optic coefficient (r33), it was demonstrated that the phosphonate ester group is effective as an electron-withdrawing group for stilbene-based second-order NLO materials. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Recommendations on clinic-administered medications to stock in an urban family medicine clinic and how to manage an outpatient formulary are not well defined in the literature. While there are numerous hypothesized incentives for a standardized medication inventory, the financial impact at the level of a single clinic is unknown.
