The conservation of semi-natural habitats represents a primary challenge for European nature conservation due to their great species diversity and their vulnerability to ongoing massive land-use changes. As these changes rapidly transform and phase out semi-natural habitats, conservation measures should be prompt and specifically focused on a sound assessment of the degree of conservation. Here we develop a methodological strategy for the assessment of the degree of conservation of semi-natural grasslands based on well-defined criteria rather than on expert opinion. Through mixed effect models, we tested ten potential indicators, encompassing proxies of species composition, habitat structure, and landscape patterns, against a measure of compositional change from habitat favourable condition, i.e., an inverse proxy of conservation status. This measure derives from the re-visitation of 132 sampling units historically sampled between 1966 and 1992 along the Apennines. The compositional change was quantified as the dissimilarity between historical habitat species pools and the composition of current communities. The compositional change was significantly related to the number of habitat diagnostic species and the relative cover of woody species with opposite sign (positive and negative, respectively). We classified and combined the classes of these two indicators in each sampling unit to assess the habitat degree of conservation at the plot and at the Natura 2000 site level. At the plot level, our assessment was in good agreement with the occurrence of species of conservation concern. On the other hand, at the site level, our assessment was not always harmonic with the habitat conservation assessment officially reported for the site investigated.

AbstractIn the present work new or confirmed alien not-cultivated vascular plants are reported for the flora of the southern Italy regions: Acalypha virginica, Alcea biennissubsp. biennis, Bidens subalternans, Cardamine occulta, Casuarina equisetifolia, Cedrus atlantica, Cedrus deodara, Chamaeiris orientalis, Cotula coronopifolia, Elodea canadensis, Eragrostis mexicanasubsp. virescens, Euphorbia nutans, Fagopyrum esculentum, Ficus microcarpa, Hesperocyparis arizonica, Hesperocyparis glabra, Kalanchoë × houghtonii, Lantana camarasubsp. aculeata, Lemna minuta, Ligustrum sinense, Lobelia erinus, Lonicera japonica, Oenothera lindheimeri, Panicum capillare, Persicaria capitata, Phyla nodiflora, Schinus molle, Sedum palmeri, Sesbania punicea, Solanum elaeagnifolium, Solanum sisymbriifoliumand Veronica peregrina. Furthermore, Lantana montevidensisis new for the Italian alien flora, Asparagus asparagoidesand Tradescantia pallidaare reported for the first time in continental Italy, whereas Cucurbita moschata, Nandina domesticaand Taxodium distichumare new for the Italian peninsula. Moreover, field surveys in Campania allow us to update at regional level the naturalization status of Euphorbia nutans(naturalized) and Ligustrum sinense(casual). The new data confirm that new non-native species are continuously introduced into the flora of southern Italy and it is noteworthy that several species, widely used in the reforestation since the middle of the last century, have undergone naturalization in recent years.

The involvement of fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) in the biology of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) has not previously been investigated. Here we report that FGF-2 prevented etoposide-induced apoptosis in H-510 SCLC cells. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B signaling did not mediate this effect because FGF-2 failed to activate phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase or protein kinase B. In contrast, the mitogen-activated extracellularly regulated kinase kinase (MEK) was crucial for this response because its inhibition abolished the prosurvival properties of FGF-2. Moreover, in H-69 SCLC cells, the failure of FGF-2 to prevent etoposide-induced apoptosis correlated with uncoupling from MEK activation. However, the introduction of an activated MEK rendered these cells resistant to etoposide killing. Cell rescue relied on de novoprotein synthesis, and the anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-XLand Bcl-2 were up-regulated in a MEK-dependent fashion within 4 h of FGF-2 treatment. Contrary to previous reports, we found that this up-regulation occurred at the translational rather than the transcriptional level. Indeed, actinomycin D failed to prevent up-regulation of Bcl-XLand Bcl-2, and FGF-2 did not increase the mRNA levels or the stability of these proteins. The induction of the pro-apoptotic protein Bad by etoposide was also blocked by FGF-2 in a MEK-dependent fashion. Thus, MEK/extracellularly regulated kinase signaling is critical in the coordinate modulation of both pro- and anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family members by FGF-2.

A canine model of facial nerve paralysis was studied to apply controlled electrical current to the peripherally denervated orbicularis oculi muscle, in the attempt to effectively restore the absent function of this denervated muscle. After unilateral facial nerve neurotmesis was performed in eight dogs, the denervated orbicularis oculi muscles of four dogs were electrically stimulated for 75 postoperative days (40 min/day). Denervated and normal orbicularis oculi muscles were electrophysiologically studied and compared with the Student t test. During the study period, minimum closure of denervated treated orbicularis oculi muscles was evoked with average stimulus strength (80-ms duration) of 1.61 ± 0.22 log mA × ms. not significantly different from that of denervated nontreated or normal orbicularis oculi muscles. From days 10 through 30 only, maximum closure of denervated treated orbicularis oculi muscles was achieved with mean pulse strength (80-ms duration) of 2.37 ± 0.09 log mA × ms, significantly lower (P < .01) than that evoking the same type of contraction from denervated nontreated muscles (80-ms duration, mean 2.83 ± 0.10 log mA × ms). In addition, denervated treated muscle pulse strength eliciting maximum contraction was not significantly different from that of normal orbicularis oculi muscles during the same period. This finding was not observed, however, from day 40 through the end of the study. This investigation demonstrates (1) the transient reversal of denervation changes of paralyzed orbicularis oculi muscle by daily electrical stimulation, and (2) the feasibility of restoring orbicularis oculi muscle function by controlled electrical current.

Recently, several techniques have been developed to repair inguinal hernias laparoscopically. These techniques have included transabdominal preperitoneal repair, placement of an intraperitoneal on-lay mesh, and laparoscopic extraperitoneal herniorrhaphy. The techniques and results of these repairs have been associated with low morbidity, but the long-term recurrence rate is not known. The advantages and disadvantages of these techniques are discussed.

Candida albicans yeast cells suspended in sterilized sea water and cultivated in Brain Heart Infusion broth were compared. Viability, chemical composition, surface hydrophobicity and ultrastructural characteristics showed variations after incubation in sea water. The yeast cells developed some ultrastructural changes after about a month in sea water. The surface hydrophobicity of the yeast cells was gradually reduced, starting from day 16, and continued to decline throughout the 32 days in sea water. A decrease in total carbohydrate, lipid and protein contents was also observed and corresponded with ultrastructural modifications.
