The humoral immunity, spleen and thymus weight indices, lymphocyte count in the thymus cortex, and granuloma diameter at vaccination sites were assessed in four differently immunopotentiated groups of meat chicken breeders. Breeders in the first two groups were given a killed Salmonella entericaserotype Enteritidis (SE) vaccine subcutaneously at 15 and 19 weeks of age. Breeders in the third and fourth groups were left unvaccinated. Breeders in the first group were further immunopotentiated with zinc and thymulin. Each bird in the first group was given the immunopotentiators intraperitoneally in a volume of 0.1 ml at intervals of 3 days for a period of 3 weeks, starting at 15 weeks of age. At each time, each bird in the first group received thymulin (10 ng) and ZnCl2(1 μmol/L), using a carboxymethyl cellulose carrier, totalling 90 ng thymulin and 9 μmol of ZnCl2per bird. Each bird in the first three groups was challenged orally with 6.7×106cfu/ml of highly virulent SE organisms, at an age of 22 weeks. The first group, which had received zinc and thymulin, had the earliest and highest humoral immune response to SE (p<0.05). This was observed at 2 and 4 weeks after the first vaccination. In addition, the first group had the highest mean thymus weight index, and the highest mean lymphocyte count in the thymus cortex. No significant difference was observed between the first two vaccinated groups in the mean granuloma diameter developed at the two vaccination sites 48 h after administration of the vaccine (p>0.05).

Loss of gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) has been linked to aberrant proliferation and an enhanced neoplastic phenotype. Many human tumors, including the cervical carcinoma line HeLa, have been reported to be deficient in expression of the gap junction protein connexin43 (Cx43) and GJIC. To determine if this is an early event in carcinogenesis, we utilized immunohistochemistry to screen a series of cervical biopsy samples and demonstrated a major reduction in Cx43 expression in dysplastic regions compared to normal epithelia. To determine whether this loss influences the neoplastic behavior of cervical carcinoma cells, we have constructed HeLa cell lines in which Cx43 expression can be induced in response to doxycycline. This approach allows for the discrimination of Cx43-mediated effects from those due to pre-existing clonal heterogeneity. Cx43 induction in these cells led to assembly of functional junctions but did not alter growth control in vitro as measured by logarithmic growth, saturation density or focus formation when in co-culture with growth-controlled fibroblasts. However, Cx43 induction decreased two indices of neoplasia: it reduced anchorage-independent growth and attenuated the growth rate of tumor xenografts. These results indicate that established HeLa cell lines are unresponsive to Cx43-mediated signals which are thought to mediate growth control of non-transformed cells, however, Cx43 expression can still reduce aspects of the neoplastic phenotype of these cells, indicating that loss of connexin signaling in dysplastic cells may contribute to their neoplastic progression.

Investigators who have examined age specific reference ranges recommend a higher prostate specific antigen (PSA) cutoff for biopsy for black than for white men older than 50 years. We controlled for PSA to determine whether age specific reference range cutoffs for diagnosis defined by the Walter Reed Army Medical Center group (Walter Reed group) would improve the disproportionate prostate cancer prognosis between black and white men.

The dynamics of the serum concentration of protein 27 (P27) of avian leukosis virus and transforming growth factor β2(TGF-β2) were compared during the period between 29 and 59 weeks of age in two flocks of broiler chicken breeding stock undergoing outbreaks of severe lymphoid leukosis (LL) associated with persistent high mortality (susceptible) and in another two flocks of breeding stock with the presence of avian leukosis virus in association with low mortality due to LL (resistant). The average mean concentration of serum P27 in the LL-susceptible flocks was significantly higher (<0.05) than that in the LL-resistant flocks in six out of seven samplings performed at 5-week intervals, between 29 and 59 weeks of age. The peak in the average rise of serum P27 in the LL-resistant flocks (309 pg/ml) was associated with the highest level of TGF-β2(1282 pg/ml) among all flocks and at all sampling times. The significance of TGF-β2in inhibition of lymphoid tumour development is discussed.

The impact of treatment on survival was analyzed in 106 patients with carcinoma of the endometrium stage II (n=61) and stage III (n=45). There was no significant difference in survival in patients with stage II who were treated with radiation theraphy alone or with combination of surgery and radiation therapy. Their five-year actuarial survival was 74.5% and 71.3% respectively (p=≥0.05). However, combined treatment was associated with significantly superior survival in patients with stage III disease where the survival was 57.3% versus 17.5% in patients who received irradiation alone (p=0.01). Diagnosis of stage III disease based upon clinical (CS III) or pathological (PS III) findings was responsible for this difference in survival. Patients with CS III whose tumor could not be resected because of its extent carried poorer prognosis. Patients with stage II had excellent tumor control in pelvis as compared to patients with stage III. Treatment-related complications were minimal. Overall survival of patients with stage 111 was poor (33.8%) due to a high rate of pelvic and/or extrapelvic recurrences.
