The bdelloid rotifer of the genus Adineta is a freshwater metazoan characterized by anhydrobiosis, a highly stable state of suspended animation induced by desiccation. This study investigated the influence of anhydrobiosis on the thermal habituation by use of an index, Activity Ratio ( AR = the number of active rotifers at each experimental temperature/ number of active rotifers at the 25°C stage). In the first experiment, rotifers were divided into two groups: one group was cultivated at 25°C throughout experiment, and another group was transferred to 15°C for two days. AR was estimated during heating up to 40°C, or during cooling down to 5°C in each group. The largest difference in AR occurred at 35°C and 10°C, indicating that AR was changed depending on the pretreated medium temperature. In the next experiment, rotifers were maintained at 15°C, and were desiccated (anhydrobiosis). AR was estimated in the high temperature range (25°C to 40°C), using rotifers that had recovered from anhydrobiosis. AR was significantly different between the groups with and without desiccation, suggesting that thermal habituation at 15°C was completely cancelled by anhydrobiosis. Possible mechanisms on the influence of anhydrobiosis on the thermal habituation have been discussed in terms of neural changes and proteins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hatching of embryos in the estuarine crab Sesarma haematocheir is highly synchronized with nocturnal high tide and completes within 1 hr among all embryos incubated by the female. This highly synchronized hatching is induced by a “Hatching‐Program Inducing Factor (HPIF)” released from the female. To further define the cues involved in synchronized hatching, experiments were designed to characterize this factor and to determine possible sites of release and temporal release patterns using strategies involving isolation of egg masses, perfusion, and ablation experiments on fully developed embryos that had not yet entered the hatching program. Embryo transplantations indicate that not only HPIF may be released from the branchial chamber, but that it is extraordinarily unstable, and loses activity within 15 min, which frustrates further attempts at characterization. Nevertheless, with regard to temporal release patterns, it was established that HPIF activity was detected during short periods over three consecutive nights prior to release of larvae. This activity did not explain the gated response of embryo release in this crab, which might correspond with circatidal larval release events in the field. J. Exp. Hatching of decapod crustaceans is characterized by the sudden rupture of the egg case. This study focused on the following two issues regarding the hatching mechanism of the estuarine terrestrial crab Sesarma haematocheir: (1) dissolution of the egg case, and (2) the site where the egg case breaks. The egg case comprises three layers: the outer two (E1 and E2) layers and the inner (E3) thin layer (0.2 μm in thickness). The outer layers showed no morphological changes upon hatching, but the inner layer (E3) was markedly digested. The digestion of this layer would enable the embryo to absorb ambient water via reverse peristalsis of the intestine, resulting in an increase of the volume. The egg case always ruptured perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the embryo. In addition, breakage of the egg case occurred at the dorsal thorax of the embryo. The three major organs positioned at this area were (1) a sharp projection (dorsal spine), (2) an assemblage of muscles, and (3) a pair of secretory glands, each of which was about 30 μm in diameter. The dorsal projection is soft before hatching, and it is clear that the egg case does not break with the posterior expansion of this projection. The rupture instead appears to be caused by the expansion of the muscles arranged perpendicular to the body axis. In addition, some (unknown) factor might weaken the egg case just before hatching. The secretory glands may be a kind of rosette gland, but the role that this gland plays at hatching is not known. As a duct comes out from the center and enters the dorsal projection, some active substance may be released at the tip of this projection. The emergence of small arthropods was studied in the boreal sea, Japan (Akkeshi, Hokkaido). In the shallow subtidal zone, two impeller pumps were set in the surface and bottom waters. The pumps ran continuously for 25 days (22 August-16 September, 1998), and invertebrates were sampled using a nylon net (300 to 500 μm in mesh size). The small arthropods collected with the net belonged to 16 orders comprising about 60 taxa. In the dominant 23 taxa, a two-way ANOVA was applied to determine whether there was any significant difference in abundance between day and night and between surface and bottom. While emergence of 15 taxa (65%) was significantly different with regard to the day/night factor, that of the other 8 taxa (35%) was not. As to the difference between the two depths, the distribution of 15 taxa (65%) was significantly different. Furthermore, in 25 taxa for which over 100 specimens were collected in each of the two depths of water, emergence patterns were examined with regard to the synchrony with day/night and tidal cycles. There were various nocturnal patterns, and the strength of the synchrony with the day/night cycle was different for each species or group. Within the same taxa, nocturnal patterns were more clearly manifested in the surface water than in the bottom water. A tidal rhythm of emergence was only seen in zoeas of shrimp. Variations of the emergence patterns of benthic crustaceans are accounted for by a hypothesis that the frequency of swimming during day versus at night is different in each species. On the other hand, the emergence patterns of some zooplankton reflect by the daily rhythm of vertical migration or dispersal in the water column.

The zoeas of the estuarine terrestrial crab Sesarma haematocheirhatch in synchrony with nocturnal high tides. Hatching is also highly synchronized among embryos: i.e., female-attached embryos would all hatch within 1 h, if the female is maintained at about 23°C. This study examined the factors affecting the timing of hatching in female-attached and detached embryos. The timing of hatching in the embryos detached from the female was somewhat affected by continuous light, salinity, and cluster size, but it was much more strongly affected by low temperature. In addition, a notable feature was that the influence of low temperature was markedly different between female-attached embryos and detached embryos. Hatching of this crab occurs after a special developmental process for hatching ("hatching program") that requires 48–49.5 h. This program would be mediated by a temperature-dependent process. Hatching of this crab cannot be fully explained in terms of osmotic effects. Since hatching of female-attached embryos was highly synchronized, the female should release an (unknown) stimulus enhancing hatching synchrony among embryos. Highly synchronized hatching among embryos would enable the female to release hatched zoeas into the water all at one time.

Sesarma haematocheir is a species of terrestrial crabs inhabiting hillsides and paddy fields near the sea. Females show a semilunar rhythm of zoea-release coinciding with days of spring tides and in addition with the time of high water occurring at the nearby seacoast about dusk. Nature of environmental stimuli or zeitgebers that induce the semilunar rhythm of zoea-release was examined experimentally. In case that a population of males and females was kept under the condition of a 24-h light-dark cycle (LD 14:10) only, females showed a free-running semilunar rhythm of egg-laying and zoea-release synchronized from field conditions. On the other hand, a semilunar rhythm of egg-laying and zoea-release was entrained by the combination of the 24-h LD and a simulated 24.8-hr moonlight cycle of which the phase was shifted in relation to the natural lunar cycle. This result suggests that the 24.8-h moonlight cycle acts as a zeitgeber of a semilunar rhythm. The 12.4-h tidal cycle parallels with the 24.8-h moonlight cycle in the field. On the basis of the perception of a distinct phase relationship between the 24-h LD and the 24.8-h moonlight cycle, it is considered that crabs substitute the 24.8-h moonlight cycle for the 12.4-h cycle of tides as a zeitgeber to synchronize the phase of the semilunar rhythm with a tidal situation.

The number of the land crabs Sesarma which released zoeae in a river was counted and recorded for 2 years. The number of crabs releasing zoeae reached a maximum at around every syzygy and decreased to a minimum at around every half moon, showing a semilunar rhythm (Fig. 2). This semilunar rhythm, when examined temporally, showed a peculiar pattern accurately synchronized with the lunar cycle. On the day of and during 4–5 days prior to the syzygy, the peak of zoea-release activity came just after sunset. A few days later, the peak gradually shifted to later in the evening and became flattened until temporal concentration was no longer observed. About 2 days after the half moon, the peak appeared again just after sunset (Figs. 3, 4 and 5). It is not likely that the tide itself affects the semilunar rhythm of Sesarma, but it is supposed that the lunadian factor is involved in it. The adaptive significance of this semilunar rhythm may be interpreted to mean that zoeae released in the river just after the time of spring high tides will successfully arrive at the sea and that the lunadian modification of the peak in the temporal structure will also ensure that the zoeae will be released at the time of high tides and will have a better chance of arriving at the sea than they would otherwise do.

Lepidopteran larvae can exclude some organelles that have invaded the hemocoel by defense systems such as phagocytosis, encapsulation, and nodule formation. However, Plusiinae loopers have another system that can exclude organelles such as endoparasitoids by forming a cyst on the penultimate segment, i.e., cuticular encystment. In this study, we examined whether cuticular encystment is common in six species of Plusiinae loopers [Autographa nigrisigna Walker, Anadevidia peponis F., Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), Acanthoplusia agnata Staudinger, Erythroplusia rutilifrons Walker, and Trichoplusia intermixta Warren) from the first to the fourth stadia. Loopers were parasitized artificially by the gregarious endoparasitoid Cotesia glomerata L. Different rates of cuticular cyst formation were shown among species. More than one-half of the loopers formed a cuticular cyst in all species except T. intermixta. A. nigrisigna and A. peponis, in particular, formed >80% cysts in the first to third instars. However, almost all parasitized host larvae died before the larval emergence of the parasitoid in spite of the high proportion of cyst formation. Death of the parasitized host larvae seemed to be caused by an overload in the number of eggs laid. We also examined, in A. nigrisigna, the number of parasitoid larvae that this looper can exclude by cuticular encystment. The number of eggs laid in the gregarious endoparasitoid can be regulated artificially. A sudden disturbance of the oviposition sequence by removing the female C. glomerata with a brush caused various numbers of eggs to be laid in the host. When the oviposition time was restricted to 0.4–4.0 s (i.e., the number of eggs laid was <5), survival rate of the loopers clearly increased. We conclude that parasitoid larvae can be expelled by cuticular encystment only if a few eggs are laid in Plusiinae loopers.
