Bariatric surgery is extremely safe and effective, but several factors need to be addressed to obtain such results. Patient selection, type of training, accreditation, type of practice, and surgical trends and technique are involved in this process. Local and global standardization are ill-advised, especially in countries with high obesity prevalence, and where the bariatric practice is fast growing.An online survey with 22 questions was sent to bariatric surgeons in Mexico. Only participants with the active practice were included, and the aim was to obtain for the first time insight in bariatric surgery training, characteristics of current practice and surgical trends.Complete responses from 114 surgeons were obtained. Most were male, under 50 years-old, ≤ 10 years of experience, and practice in low-volume hospitals. Less than half had a 12-month formal training. Gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy were the most common procedures. Practice trends like leak tests, use of drains, preoperative weight loss, routine endoscopy, and pharmacological tromboprofilaxis are common. In surgical technique, the gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy confection was more homogenic when compared to the one-anastomosis gastric bypass.Complete responses from 114 surgeons were obtained. Fellowship programs and Board Certification in bariatric surgery are major advances in our country, thus standardization and high-quality practice can be achieved.

This paper presents a cross-sector analysis of a 100 kWp vertical agrivoltaic (AV) case study in Chanco, Maule, Chile. Maule is an agricultural region facing recurring droughts, which put pressure on irrigated lands. The study investigates the potential of vertical AV in two ways: comparing the energy yield prediction of the photovoltaic component with a typical north-tilted PV plant and comparing the water demand of a reference crop in vertical AV with open field conditions. A PVLib and PVFactors python tools were used to evaluate energy production, while spatial evapotranspiration prediction incorporates wind speed and solar irradiation heterogeneities. Results for the climatic year 2021 indicate that a north-tilted power plant produced more energy than a bi-facial vertical AV plant, but the latter represents a significantly less impact on agricultural activities. The analyzed vertical AV presents a lower impact to the grid due to the two peaks in daily power production that spread the generation over the day and does not contribute to the overproduction in the midday that is currently being curtailed when high solar irradiance is present in Chile. Water savings of up to 1410 m3/ha were found in the study with the vertical AV installation mainly due to the reduced irradiation combined with windbreak effects.

Acetone–butanol–ethanol (ABE) fermentation process can be exploited for the generation of butanol as biofuel, however it does need to overcome its low volumetric solvent productivity before it can commercially compete with fossil fuel technologies. In this regard, mathematical modelling and simulation analysis are tools that can serve as the base for process engineering development of biological systems. In this work, a novel phenomenological kinetic model of Clostridium acetobutylicumATCC 824 was considered as a benchmark system to evaluate the behaviour of an ABE fermentation under different process configurations using both free and immobilized cells: single stage batch operation, fed-batch, single stage Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) and multistage CSTRs with and without biomass recirculation. The proposed model achieved a linear correlation index r2=0.9952 and r2=0.9710 over experimental data for free and immobilized cells respectively. The predicted maximum butanol concentration and productivity obtained were 13.08g·L−1and 1.9620g·L−1·h−1respectively, which represents an increase of 1.01% and 990% versusthe currently developed industrial scale process reported currently into the literature. These results provide a reliable platform for the design and optimization of the ABE fermentation system and showcase the adequate predictive nature of the proposed model.

In the present work, we implement thixotropic–viscoelastic models in the HiGFlow system, which is a recently developed Computational Fluid Dynamics software that is able to simulate Newtonian, Generalized-Newtonian and viscoelastic flows using finite differences in tree-based grids. The system uses a moving least squares meshless interpolation technique, allowing to use more complex mesh configurations, still keeping the overall order of accuracy. We provide here a brief introduction to each of the implemented models (the Bautista–Manero–Puig, the Modified-Bautista, the NM_ τ p and NM_ T models), where we describe their parameters, their strengths and their limitations. Unlike previous numerical works focused on this kind of fluids, non-zero Reynolds number numerical simulations of these models are carried out here in HiGFlow using different geometries like 2D channels, planar contraction 4:1 and 4:1:4 and our results are compared with those predicted by RheoTool , an open-source toolbox based on OpenFOAM. Although the transient numerical solutions differ, we observe that there is an excellent agreement in the steady-state profiles obtained in both software. A discussion of our results and their physical interpretation, a comparison with previously published results in the literature and a deep analysis of the corner vortex behaviour in the contraction geometries are also presented. Moreover, we show that our methodology offers flexibility and stability in the numerical simulations of thixotropic–viscoelastic flows for structured fluids, which allows the users to accurately simulate rheological behaviour of interest. • Thixotropic–viscoelastic models are implemented in a new CFD software called HiGFlow. • Simulations are carried out in 2D-channel and planar-contraction geometries at Re ≠ 0. • We compare directly our simulations with results predicted by the RheoTool system. • A comparison with previously published results in the literature is shown. • Transient solutions of stresses and analysis of vortex behaviour are presented. ObjectivesPeruvian men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) are highly vulnerable to HIV infection (HIV), but stigma, access issues and fear of venipuncture hamper testing. The oral HIV test—which uses oral fluids and provides results in 20 minutes—could reduce these barriers. The objective of this study was to determine the acceptability of the oral HIV test and the individual-level factors associated with its acceptability among MSM and TGW.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional secondary analysis among Peruvian MSM and TGW attending a community-based health centre between February 2012 and February 2013 to determine the individual-level factors associated with oral HIV test acceptability.ResultsOf 334 participants, 88% were MSM and 12% TGW. Overall, 85% of participants indicated their acceptability of the oral HIV test. Acceptability was higher in MSM than TGW (85.7% vs 80.0%) but this difference was not significant. Factors associated with acceptability in MSM were: tertiary or higher education (prevalence ratio (PR)=1.18, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.32 and PR=1.16, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.30, respectively); sex with drug use (PR=1.19, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.36); believing that HIV is transmitted by saliva (PR=1.20, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.33); and potential use of the oral test at home (PR=1.56, 95% CI 1.32 to 1.85). The only factor associated with lower acceptability was having had first anal intercourse between 14 and 19 years of age (PR=0.89, 95% CI 0.80 to 0.98).ConclusionsWe identified the individual factors associated with oral HIV test acceptability among Peruvian MSM and TGW. Expanded use of the oral HIV test to increase testing rates among Peruvian MSM and TGW is recommended.Trial registration numberNCT01387412, post-results.

Two malaria parasites of Southeast Asian macaques, Plasmodium knowlesiand P cynomolgi, can infect humans experimentally. In Malaysia, where both species are common, zoonotic knowlesi malaria has recently become dominant, and cases are recorded throughout the region. By contrast, to date, only a single case of naturally acquired P cynomolgihas been found in humans. In this study, we show that whereas P cynomolgimerozoites invade monkey red blood cells indiscriminately in vitro, in humans, they are restricted to reticulocytes expressing both transferrin receptor 1 (Trf1 or CD71) and the Duffy antigen/chemokine receptor (DARC or CD234). This likely contributes to the paucity of detectable zoonotic cynomolgi malaria. We further describe postinvasion morphologic and rheologic alterations in P cynomolgi–infected human reticulocytes that are strikingly similar to those observed for P vivax. These observations stress the value of P cynomolgias a model in the development of blood stage vaccines against vivax malaria.

In recent years, the use of high-throughput omics technologies has led to the rapid discovery of many candidate biomarkers. However, few of them have made the transition to the clinic. In this review, the promise of omics technologies to contribute to the process of biomarker development is described. An overview of the current state in this area is presented with examples of genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics and microbiomics biomarkers in the field of oncology, along with some proposed strategies to accelerate their validation and translation to improve the care of patients with neoplasms. The inherent complexity underlying neoplasms combined with the requirement of developing well-designed biomarker discovery processes based on omics technologies present a challenge for the effective development of biomarkers that may be useful in guiding therapies, addressing disease risks, and predicting clinical outcomes.

The B cell antigen receptor repertoire is highly diverse and constantly modified by clonal selection. High-throughput DNA sequencing (HTS) of the lymphocyte repertoire (Rep-Seq) represents a promising technology to explore such diversity ex-vivoand assist in the identification of antigen-specific antibodies based on molecular signatures of clonal selection. Therefore, integrative tools for repertoire reconstruction and analysis from antibody sequences are needed. We developed ImmunediveRity, a stand-alone pipeline primarily based in R programming for the integral analysis of B cell repertoire data generated by HTS. The pipeline integrates GNU software and in house scripts to perform quality filtering, sequencing noise correction and repertoire reconstruction based on V, D and J segment assignment, clonal origin and unique heavy chain identification. Post-analysis scripts generate a wealth of repertoire metrics that in conjunction with a rich graphical output facilitates sample comparison and repertoire mining. Its performance was tested with raw and curated human and mouse 454-Roche sequencing benchmarks providing good approximations of repertoire structure. Furthermore, ImmunediveRsity was used to mine the B cell repertoire of immunized mice with a model antigen, allowing the identification of previously validated antigen-specific antibodies, and revealing different and unexpected clonal diversity patterns in the post-immunization IgM and IgG compartments. Although ImmunediveRsity is similar to other recently developed tools, it offers significant advantages that facilitate repertoire analysis and repertoire mining. Emerging market firms (EMFs) must compete for market share with foreign multinational enterprises (MNEs) that are, in most cases, more affluent in resources and assets. At the same time, EMFs come from a context with strong market failures and institutional factors not always business friendly. Which strategies can be implemented then to compete in such conditions? The answer for Quala S.A., a Colombian company that has a successful internationalisation experience in other Latin American countries, has been a localised adaptive response . By cleverly detecting unexplored market niches and adapting existing products to better suit them; this company has relied on its marketing function to shape its innovation efforts. Its success in emerging markets vis-à-vis foreign MNEs is based on the latter’s inability to fully adapt to each market, or to build brands from the bottom up – local costumers first. But resisting standardisation comes with a cost. Is Quala’s strategy sustainable?

The objective of the present work was to study the effect of bread storage temperature on starch retrogradation, using water activity measurement and X‐ray diffractometry technique to analyse the changes produced in the crumb firmness such as recrystallization. When storing bread with crust, the crust tends to trap moisture from the crumb, resulting in a dehydration of the crumb with faster staling. For storage temperatures of 25 and 4°C, water activity decreases as a function of storage time whereas at −18°C it is maintained at an almost constant level for 23 days. During storage, the starch molecules are reassociated and generate a new crystalline order which has a typical XRD pattern: the B‐type structure. The peak at 17.4° is indicative of this structure and is related to bread aging. As observed with the recrystallization kinetics, at −18°C only crystal growth may occur, whereas at 25 and 4°C there would be not only growth but also formation of new crystals. At 4°C the rate of starch retrogradation is the highest for the studied conditions.

The objective of the present work was to analyze molecular and supramolecular changes of bread starch and to relate bread firmness increase during storage with starch recrystallization and water hydration levels and migration in gluten-free bread. At the studied conditions starch was in the supercooled region of the state diagram, at a temperature between Tg (glass transition temperature) and Tm (melting temperature), feasible to crystallize. The crystalline degree during storage was followed by the intensity increase in the X-ray diffraction peaks. During bread storage, water migration occurred from the crumb towards the crust. Water amount and redistribution affected the kind of starch crystallites formed and firmness of aged bread. It was not the total amount of crystalline fraction that determined bread firmness, but the type of crystallites formed. These observations are a further evidence that bread firmness development and starch recrystallization, although being related phenomena, are obviously separate events.

Abstract: The underpotential deposition (UPD) of copper on partially oxidized rhodium electrodes was studied in acid medium using potentiodynamic techniques. The process was analyzed as a function of the potential and time of deposition. The potentiodynamic I-E patterns for the oxidative dissolution of Cu provide evidence for the existence of a chemical reaction between Cu and oxygen existing on the electrode surface. Redistribution of the active sites is also possible when appreciable quantities of oxidized species are simultaneously reduced by the UPD process. The partially oxidized rhodium electrodes were prepared by cyclic voltammetry and anodic polarization. The later method provided the most oxidized surfaces, but, even in this case, the degree of oxygen surface coverage was lower than that corresponding to a monolayer.

In plant organelles transcripts are modified posttranscriptionally by RNA editing. This modification process changes almost every protein-coding RNA at specific cytidine and uridine positions. Therefore, mitochondrially encoded protein sequences differ from the genomically fixed information and show, after editing, a higher conservation. To investigate this unusual processing step in plant mitochondria, several assays have been developed. However, compared with the progress made in other RNA editing fields, knowledge about the factors involved in plant mitochondrial editing is limited. One reason for this is the lack of a reliablein vitrosystem for mitochondria. To reveal the biochemical nature of the RNA editing reaction in plant mitochondria, we developed anin vitrosystem by which we were able to show that cytidine is specifically modified to uridine by a deamination or transamination process. Here we describe the development of a peain vitrosystem and discuss assays to follow the editing process.

Cytosolic tail motifs in host cell surface receptors predict modes of SARS-CoV-2 entry and propagation.

The Eukaryotic Linear Motif (ELM) resource is dedicated to the characterization and prediction of short linear motifs (SLiMs). SLiMs are compact, degenerate peptide segments found in many proteins and essential to almost all cellular processes. However, despite their abundance, SLiMs remain largely uncharacterized. The ELM database is a collection of manually annotated SLiM instances curated from experimental literature. In this article we illustrate how to browse and search the database for curated SLiM data, and cover the different types of data integrated in the resource. We also cover how to use this resource in order to predict SLiMs in known as well as novel proteins, and how to interpret the results generated by the ELM prediction pipeline. The ELM database is a very rich resource, and in the following protocols we give helpful examples to demonstrate how this knowledge can be used to improve your own research. © 2017 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

One potential complication of rhytidoplasty is alopecia of the temporoparietal scars of the scalp. The authors propose a protocol for scalp closure as a complement to the use of a beveled incision in the direction of the hair follicles.
