A study compares the performance of two samples of European executives to examine the role of emotional, social and cognitive competencies in distinguishing between outstanding and average performers. Findings suggest that the association of several competencies with performance vary between the samples of high- and average-performing executives, while competencies such as achievement orientation and team leadership are common to both samples.
