`Gone With the Wind,' Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer Prize-winning epic novel of the Old South, turns 50, amid a round of reissues and a flurry of festivities. All of Atlanta, Georgia the setting of much of the novel, seems to be celebrating.

The article focuses on the book Speak Now Against the Day: The Generation Before the Civil Rights Movement in the South, by John Egerton. Everybody knows about the civil rights movement. This book, a narrative history of the South and race from 1932 to 1954, tells what one might not know: why the extreme remedy of the movement was the only way to end the subjugation of blacks in the South? Egerton did an extraordinary amount of research on this one. The heart of the book is Egerton's tracing of the activities of Southern dissidents to the prevailing racism.

The article focuses on African American botanist George Washington Carver who was honored with a national monument in his birth place at Diamond Grove in Missouri. It states that Carver is believed to be born in 1864 and had his Master of Science in bacterial botany and agriculture at Iowa Agricultural College in 1896. It adds that he encouraged planting of peanut, pecan, and sweet potato in Southern States after being Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute for Negroes director of agriculture.

The article discusses how, after decades, the U.S. Senate at last says sorry for its part segregation. From 1882 to 1968, 4,743 people, 3446 of them black, were killed by lynch mobs, according to Tuskegee University records. The actual number was probably much higher. Though states rarely prosecuted white men for killing blacks, there was never a federal law against lynching. Nearly 200 pieces of anti-lynching legislation were proposed, with support from seven different presidents, and three anti-lynching bills made it through the House. But each time a bill was introduced in the Senate, southern conservatives used their filibuster powers to defend states' rights. The apology came on the same day that saw the beginning of jury selection for the new trial of Edgar Ray Killen, a reputed Klansman charged with murdering three civil-rights workers in Neshoba County, Mississippi, in 1964. June also saw a belated autopsy of the body of Emmett Till, a black 14-year-old Chicagoan who was brutally killed in Mississippi in 1955. Months after his killers, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, had been acquitted by an all-white, all-male jury, they admitted their guilt. Many argue that the country is obliged to look at these cases before it can move forward, particularly in the Deep South. But these are probably the last of the landmark civil-rights trials.

The article provides facts and figures regarding slavery in the Southern States. Most slaves spent 14-hour days tending and picking cotton by hand. The whip is considered as the most inhumane tool used by slave owners. In 1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin making factory owners hire more slaves to keep up with the demand for cotton. The country passed its first Fugitive Slave Law which allows slave owners to hunt for runaways.
