The successful design of solid-state photo- and electrochemical devices depends on the careful engineering of point defects in solid-state ion conductors. Characterization of point defects is critical to these efforts, but the best-developed techniques are difficult and time-consuming. Raman spectroscopy─with its exceptional speed, flexibility, and accessibility─is a promising alternative. Raman signatures arise from point defects due to local symmetry breaking and structural distortions. Unfortunately, the assignment of these signatures is often hampered by a shortage of reference compounds and corresponding reference spectra. This issue can be circumvented by calculation of defect-induced Raman signatures from first principles, but this is computationally demanding. Here, we introduce an efficient computational procedure for the prediction of point defect Raman signatures in solid-state ion conductors. Our method leverages machine-learning force fields and “atomic Raman tensors”, i.e., polarizability fluctuations due to motions of individual atoms. We find that our procedure reduces computational cost by up to 80% compared to existing first-principles frozen-phonon approaches. These efficiency gains enable synergistic computational–experimental investigations, in our case allowing us to precisely interpret the Raman spectra of Sr(Ti0.94Ni0.06)O3-δ, a model oxygen ion conductor. By predicting Raman signatures of specific point defects, we determine the nature of dominant defects and unravel impacts of temperature and quenching on in situand ex situRaman spectra. Specifically, our findings reveal the temperature-dependent distribution and association behavior of oxygen vacancies and nickel substitutional defects. Overall, our approach enables rapid Raman-based characterization of point defects to support defect engineering in novel solid-state ion conductors.

Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are at an increased risk of genital urinary (GU) infections, with the risk increasing with higher A1Cs. Given the broad adoption of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) in patients with T2D, both providers and patients need to be aware of common adverse effects associated with these medications, specifically GU infections. However trials involving SGLT2is looked at patients with an average A1C of less than 9%, and thus, the incidence of GU infections may not truly reflect the general diabetic population.Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess the association between GU infections in patients started on SGLT2is and A1C levels.Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients seen in an adult, primary care clinic, at New York City Health and Hospitals, South Brooklyn Health. Men and nonpregnant, nonlactating women >18 years old with a diagnosis of T2D who were initiated on an SGLT2i between January 2018 and January 2023 were included in the analysis. The primary endpoint is to compare the risk of GU infections in patients with T2D who were started on SGLT2is, regardless of dose, with hemoglobin A1C of >9% to those with hemoglobin A1C <9% at baseline.Results: Three hundred and twenty-eight patients were eligible based on specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Overall, there was a statistically significant difference in the number of GU infections that occurred in patients with a baseline A1C >9% compared with those with an A1C <9% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.05-2.88; P= 0.041).Conclusions and Relevance: Type 2 diabetes patients initiated on SGLT2is may experience an increased risk of GU infection, especially in those patients with an A1C of 9% or greater. Further research is necessary to validate and expand upon these findings.

We propose a multigrid method to solve the linear system of equations arising from a hybrid discontinuous Galerkin (in particular, a single face hybridizable, a hybrid Raviart–Thomas, or a hybrid Brezzi–Douglas–Marini) discretization of a Stokes problem. Our analysis is centered around the augmented Lagrangian approach and we prove uniform convergence in this setting. Beyond this, we establish relations, which resemble those in Cockburn & Gopalakrishnan (2008, Error analysis of variable degree mixed methods for elliptic problems via hybridization. Math. Comput., 74, 1653–1677) for elliptic problems, between the approximates that are obtained by the single-face hybridizable, hybrid Raviart–Thomas and hybrid Brezzi–Douglas–Marini methods. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.

In this letter, an efficient beam-domain-based pilot assignment scheme is proposed to mitigate the pilot contamination caused by pilot reuse in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. By exploiting the information provided through beam management during the initial access, we construct a graph that captures the potential interference in the beam domain and apply graph coloring for pilot assignment. In addition, we consider a radio frequency chain switch on/off strategy to improve energy efficiency. Numerical results verify that the proposed pilot assignment scheme can significantly improve both spectral efficiency and energy efficiency compared to existing schemes.

Underground passageways for the transport of goods and people have fascinated mankind throughout the centuries. Recent initiatives in different parts of the world aim at rekindling the freight tunnel concept for urban logistics. According to this concept, freight is lifted into a tunnel, moved via electrically powered vehicles, rail cars, or maglev shuttles toward inner-city microhubs, and finally delivered with environmentally friendly vehicles to urban recipients. The main justification for this concept to outweigh the huge tunnel boring cost is a substantial reduction of road-based urban freight traffic. To warn about unfulfilled expectations, however, we show that the combination of time-critical goods, small inner-city hubs with restricted storage capacity, and the wrong booking procedure can hinder a loading of tunnel vehicles to capacity. To do so, we consider a polynomially solvable scheduling problem where due date-restricted shipments are to be assigned to tunnel vehicles and delivered to a given set of microhubs with limited storage capacity. Scarce hub capacities, tight due dates, and the wrong booking policy may not only lead to unused tunnel capacity but also to shipments that cannot be feasibly transported through the tunnel. If they are handed over to trucks as a fallback option, we show that a Braess-like paradox can occur: The time-critical, small-lot transports of the leftover shipments can produce even more surface traffic than trucking all shipments right from the start without the tunnel.Supplemental Material:The online appendices are available at https://doi.org/10.1287/serv.2023.0005.
