Abstract

Abstract:: The use of storage cells has become a standard technique for internal gas targets in conjunction with high energy storage rings. In case of spin-polarized hydrogen and deuterium gas targets the interaction of the injected atoms with the walls of the storage cell can lead to depolarization and recombination. Thus the number of wall collisions of the atoms in the target gas is important for modeling the processes of spin relaxation and recombination. It is shown in this article that the diffusion process of rarefied gases in long tubes or storage cells can be described with the help of the one-dimensional diffusion equation. Mathematical methods are presented that allow one to calculate collision age distributions (CAD) and their moments analytically. These methods provide a better understanding of the different aspects of diffusion than Monte Carlo calculations. Additionally it is shown that measurements of the atomic density or polarization of a gas sample taken from the center of the tube allow one to determine the possible range of the corresponding density weighted average values along the tube. The calculations are applied to the storage cell geometry of the HERMES internal polarized hydrogen and deuterium gas target.

Abstract

Results are presented on the ratios of the nucleon structure function in copper to deuterium from two separate experiments. The data confirm that the nucleon structure function,F2, is different for bound nucleons than for the quasi-free ones in the deuteron. The redistribution in the fraction of the nucleon's momentum carried by quarks is investigated and it is found that the data are compatible with no integral loss of quark momenta due to nuclear effects.

Abstract

Differential multiplicities of forward produced hadrons in deep inelastic muon scattering on nuclear targets have been compared with those from deuterium. The ratios are observed to increase towards unity as the virtual photon energy increases with no significant dependence on the other muon kinematic variables. The hadron transverse momentum distribution is observed to be broadened in nuclear targets. The dependence on the remaining hadron variables is investigated and the results are discussed in the framework of intranuclear interaction models and in the context of the EMC effect.

Abstract

Inclusive distributions of ρ0 and ω mesons have been measured in deep inelastic μ-p interactions at 280 GeV/c. A comparison of the ρ0 cross sections with other leptoproduction experiments is presented. The ω results represent the first observation of this inclusive channel in high energy leptoproduction. The ρ0 and ω yields are found to be equal as may be expected from the available density of states in isospin space. This contrasts with spin angular momentum where the vector to pseudoscalar meson ratio is suppressed relative to the available number of spin states.

Abstract

TheW andQ2 dependence of the fragmentation functions and of the average multiplicity of charged pions is investigated, using data from the NA9 experiment at the CERN SPS on muon-proton scattering at 280 GeV. A significant increase of pion production with increasingW is observed at fixedQ2, leading to a rise of the average charged pion multiplicity, linear in lnW2, and of the pion fragmentation function in the central region, i.e. at small |xF|. This increase can be understood from the kinematic widening of the cms rapidity range proportional to lnW2 and the observedW independent height of the rapidity distribution. At fixedW, a rise of the average charged pion multiplicity withQ2 is observed. This rise appears to be weaker than that observed for all charged hadrons implying a stronger rise withQ2 for kaons and protons.

Abstract

Using a lead glass detector installed in the EMC forward spectrometer radiative photons have been measured in 200 GeV muon-hydrogen collisions. The results are compared with the standard QED one photon emission theory of Mo and Tsai and also with the more recent predictions of a multiphoton emission theory of Chahine. We conclude that there is no evidence for any deviation from the standard theory, in terms of the yield and angular distribution of photons with fractional energy,z>0.7.

Abstract

Data are presented on exclusive ρ0 and ϕ production in deep inelastic muon scattering from a target consisting mainly of nitrogen. The ratio of the total cross sections for ρ0 and ϕ production is found to be 9∶(1.6±0.4) at 〈Q2〉=7.5 GeV2, consistent with theSU(3) prediction of 9∶2. Thet dependence for exclusive ρ0 production is found to become shallover asQ2 increases and, for largeQ2, thet dependence is typical of that for a hard scattering process. Furthermore, the ratio of the cross sections for coherent: incoherent production from nitrogen is found to decrease rapidly withQ2. Such behaviour indicates that even for exclusive vector meson production the virtual photon behaves predominantly as an electromagnetic probe.

Abstract

The Bose-Einstein correlation has been observed for pions in deep inelastic µp interactions at 280 GeV. The importance of non-interference correlations in the sample of like charge pion pairs and in the sample used for reference is discussed. The pion emission region is found to be roughly spherical in the pair rest frame with a radius of 0.46–0.84 fm and the chaos factor ? is 0.60–1.08.

Abstract

We have studied transverse momentum distributions for exclusiveρ0 muoproduction on protons and heavier nuclei at 22<25 GeV2. TheQ2 dependence of the slopes of thept2 andt′ distributions is discussed. The influence of the non-exclusive background is investigated. Thept2-slope for exclusive events is 4.3±0.6±0.7 GeV−2 at largeQ2. Thept2 spectra are much softer than inclusivept2 spectra of leading hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering.

14. The EMC effect — status and perspectives

Abstract

Recent experimental results on the EMC effect are presented. The ratios of structure functions for nuclei and deuterium measured by the two muon experiments at CERN show a clear enhancement of a few percent forx<0.25. Atx below 0.05 substantial shadowing with littleQ2 dependence has been observed by a dedicated low angle experiment of the EMC. No significant nuclear mass dependence ofR=aL/aT has been seen in the SLAC experiment E 140. There are several indications that theQ2 evolution of nuclear structure functions deviates from the expectations of perturbative QCD and that the gluon distribution in nuclei is harder than in free nucleons. This is possibly caused by nucleon-nucleon correlations on the quark-gluon level. Many aspects of the EMC effect are presently being investigated by the high energy muon experiment of the NMC collaboration at CERN and a Drell-Yan experiment at FNAL. First results can be expected soon. They will help to develop a better understanding of nuclear effects in quark and gluon distributions.

Abstract

Results are presented from a study of deep inelastic 280 GeV muon-nucleon interactions on the transverse momenta and jet properties of the final state hadrons. The results are analysed in a way which attempts to separate the contributions of hard and soft QCD effects from those that arise from the fragmentation process. The fragmentation models with which the data are compared are the Lund string model, the independent jet model, the QCD parton shower model including soft gluon interference effects, and the firestring model. The discrimination between these models is discussed. Various methods of analysis of the data in terms of hard QCD processes are presented. From a study of the properties of the jet profiles a value of as, to leading order, is determined using the Lund string model, namely as=0.29±0.01 (stat.) ±0.02 (syst.), forQ2~20 GeV2.

Abstract

The Q2 dependence of the structure function ratio F2Sn/F2Cfor 0.01 < x < 0.75 and 1 < Q2 < 140 GeV2 is reported. For x < 0.1 the size of shadowing decreases with ln Q2 and the maximum rate is about 0.04 at x = 0.01. The rate decreases with x and is compatible with zero for x  0.1. The difference RSn − RC, where R is the ratio of longitudinally to transversely polarised virtual photon absorption cross sections, is also given. No dependence on x is seen and the average value is 0.040 ± 0.021 (stat.) ± 0.026 (syst.) at a mean Q2 of 10 GeV2.

Results are presented for six nuclei from Be to Pb on the structure function ratios F2A/F2C(x) and their A dependence in deep inelastic muon scattering at 200 GeV incident muon energy. The data cover the kinematic range 0.01 < x < 0.8 with Q2 ranging from 2 to 70 GeV2. The A dependence of nuclear structure function ratios is parametrised and compared to various models.

Abstract

The general charge properties of the hadronic final state produced inµ+p andµ+d interactions at 280 GeV are investigated. Quark charge retention and local charge compensation is observed. The ratioF2n/F2p of the neutron to proton structure function is derived from the measurement of the average hadronic charge in µd interactions.

Abstract

Final data measured with the EMC forward spectrometer are presented on the production of forward charged hadrons in µp and µd scattering at incident beam energies between 100 and 280 GeV. The large statistic of 373 000 events allows a study of the semi-inclusive hadron production as a function ofz,pT2 and T2> in smallQ2,xBj andW bins. Charge multiplicity ratios and differences as a function ofz andxBj are given forp, d andn-targets. From the differences of charge multiplicities the ratio of the valence quark distributions of the protondv(x)/uv(x) is determined for the first time in charged lepton scattering. The Gronau et al. sum rule is tested, the measured sum being 0.31±0.06 stat. ±0.05 syst., compared with the theoretical expectation of 2/7˜0.286. The measured sum corresponds to an absolute value of the ratio of thed andu quark charge of 0.44±0.10 stat.±0.08 syst.

Abstract

A comparison is made between the properties of the final state hadrons produced in 280 GeV µp interactions and ine+e- annihilation. The Lund model of hadroproduction is used as an aid in understanding the differences observed. The hadron distributions from µp ande+e- interactions are consistent with the quark parton model assumption of environmental independence, provided that the differences in heavy quark production and hard QCD effects in the two processes are taken into account. A comparison with aK+p experiment is also made. Values are also determined for the Lund model parameters sq = 0.410 ± 0.002 ± 0.020 GeV and s' = 0.29-0.15 -0.13+0.09+0.10 GeV, controlling the transverse momenta in fragmentation and intrinsic transverse momenta of the struck quark respectively.

Abstract

New results on proton and antiproton production in the target and current fragmentation regions of high energy muon-nucleon scattering are presented. Proton and antiproton production is investigated as a function of Feynmanx and rapidity. No significant difference is observed between production on hydrogen and deuterium targets. Correlations betweenpp, " and " pairs are analysed and the results are compared with the predictions of the Lund fragmentation model.

Abstract

The multiplicity distributions of charged hadrons produced in the deep inelastic muon-proton scattering at 280 GeV are analysed in various rapidity intervals, as a function of the total hadronic centre of mass energy W ranging from 4–20 GeV. Multiplicity distributions for the backward and forward hemispheres are also analysed separately. The data can be well parameterized by binomial distributions, extending their range of applicability to the case of lepton-proton scattering. The energy and the rapidity dependence of the parameters is presented and a smooth transition from the negative binomial distribution via Poissonian to the ordinary binomial is observed.

Abstract

The production of strange particles has been studied in a 280 GeV muon nucleon scattering experiment with acceptance and particle identification over a large kinematical range. The data show that at large values ofxBj the interactions take place mostly on au valence quark in agreement with the basic quarkparton model predictions. This feature results in a strong forward-backward asymmetry in the distribution of strangeness along the rapidity axis. The data are compatible with a strange to non-strange quark suppression factor of ˜0.3 and with a strong suppression of strange diquarks. The distributions ofK+K- pairs show that the two kaons are preferentially produced at neighbouring values of rapidity.

Abstract

A study of the distribution of the azimuthal angle ? of charged hadrons in deep inelastic µ-p scattering is presented. The dependence of the moments of this distribution on the Feynmanx variable and the momentum transverse to the virtual photon indicates that non-zero moments arise mainly from the effects of the intrinsicKT of the struck quark with T2>>?(0.44 GeV)2, and to a lesser extent from QCD processes. No significant variation withQ2 orW2 is observed.

Abstract

Dimuon and trimuon events have been studied in deep inelastic muon scattering on an iron target at an incident muon energy of 200 GeV. The events are shown to originate mainly from charm production. Comparison of the measured cross sections with data taken at higher muon energies shows that charm production originates predominantly from transverse virtual photons. Within the framework of the photon gluon fusion model this indicates that the parity of the gluon is odd.

Abstract

Small angle scattering of 280 GeV positive muons by deuterium, carbon and calcium has been measured at scattering angles down to 2 mrad. The nucleon structure function F2extracted from deuterium does not show a significant xdependence in the measured range of Q2and its Q2dependence is linear in logQ2. For calcium, a depletion of F2is observed at low xby 30% as compared with the values at x= 0.1 where F2(Ca) and F2(D) are not significantly different. This depletion is attributed to shadowing. The carbon structure function exhibits a similar, but less pronounced, xdependence. Such behaviour is observed to be independent of Q2. The data are consistent with those obtained from other charged lepton experiments both at similar and higher values of xand Q2and considerably extend the range of the measurements down to the low values of xto be measured in forthcoming experiments at HERA.

Abstract

Correlations between charged hadrons are investigated in a 280 GeV muon-proton scattering experiment. Although most of the observed particles are decay products it is shown that the correlations found originate in the fragmentation process and are not due simply to resonance production. Correlations are demonstrated between hadrons close in rapidity with respect to their charges and to the directions of their momentum components perpendicular to the virtual photon axis. Such short range correlations are predicted by the standard hadronization models.

Abstract

The energy distribution of inclusive hadrons produced by 280 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets are compared. The sum of the scaled energy distributions of the positive and negative hadrons is found to be the same for the two targets. The difference of these distributions is observed to factorise inx andz and thez-dependence is found to be independent of the target type and have a form (1-z)2.1±0.2. The net charge of the hadronic jet is positive at highx even in the case when the scattering takes place on the neutron. These results are in good agreement with the expectations of the Quark Parton Model.

Abstract

Thez andpT2 distributions of p0 mesons produced by the interaction of 200 GeV muons on hydrogen are presented. Comparisons are made with other p0 and charged hadron data and with the predictions of perturbative QCD. The data show a rise of T2> withW2 which is consistent with QCD, and withz2 which requires a contribution from a primordialkT. The fraction of total energy which appears as p0 mesons is 0.27±0.05.

Abstract

A simple pseudoexternal cavity with a commerically available broad-area laser diode, standard optics, and a thin Fabry–Perot etalon provides single-mode emission with 1-W optical power and a tuning range of ∼0.5 nm.?The linewidth is estimated at 200??MHz.?Such high-power semiconductor laser systems are promising light sources for atomic physics, in which narrow-band high-power light is necessary, for example, for optical pumping of alkali metal vapor. Methods for expanding the tuning range and achieving higher narrow-band optical power are discussed.

Abstract

A Comment on the recently published reevaluation of the polarization-averaged parton distribution of strange quarks in the nucleon using final data on the multiplicities of charged kaons in semi-inclusive deepinelastic scattering (DIS) is reviewed. Important features of the comparison of one-dimensional projections of the multidimensional HERMES data are pointed out. A test of the leading-order extraction of xB S(xB) using the difference between charged-kaon multiplicities is repeated. The results are consistent with leading-order predictions within the uncertainties in the input data, and do not invalidate the earlier extraction of xB S(xB). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
