- Abstract
Cariprazine is a new atypical antipsychotic for management of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This article examines the role of cariprazine, a partial D2 and D3 receptor agonist (with a higher affinity for the D3 receptor), in the management of psychiatric conditions. Cariprazine leads to significant improvements in scores on psychiatric scales such as the Positive and Negative Syndrome scale, the Clinical Global Impressions scale, and the Young Mania Rating scale, but it is also associated with side effects such as akathisia, restlessness, and insomnia. These findings can help guide psychiatrists and pharmacists in their clinical role of supporting their psychiatric patients.
