Some previous studies have shown that increased stress hormone levels have beneficial effects on memory encoding; however, there is no clear consensus on which encoding-related processes are affected by stress hormones. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between interindividual differences in neuroendocrine response to acute stress and interference resolution (i.e., mnemonic discrimination). Participants were healthy young adults who were exposed to physical and psychological stressors (Socially Evaluated Cold Pressor Test). Then participants completed the modified version of the Mnemonic Similarity Task. Specifically, they were presented with photographs of emotionally arousing (negative and positive) and nonarousing (neutral) scenes followed by a recognition memory test where they saw a mixture of old and new stimuli. Crucially, participants were also presented with critical lure items, that is, visually similar stimuli to ones presented at encoding. We found that participants who had higher cortisol response to the stressors were better in discriminating between the studied items and their visually similar lures. This effect was present for the arousing and nonarousing materials as well. These findings suggest that increased hormonal response to acute stress has a beneficial impact on the formation of distinct, nonoverlapping, unique memory representations, and consequently, on episodic memory encoding processes.

Repeated encounter with encoded memories is often a fundamental component of long-term learning processes, however, the role of repeated access to encoded memories in long-term consolidation is yet to be clarified. Here we investigated whether the long-term retention of newly acquired associative memories is affected if one of the central areas of the attentional control network is stimulated before or after repeated access to acquired information. Non-clinical participants (undergraduate students, N = 118) were exposed to an associative verbal learning task. Following the initial learning of word pairs, memories for the word pairs were reencountered either by re-presenting the stimuli to the participants for restudying or by cued recall. The reencounter phase was either preceded by (Experiment 1) or followed by (Experiment 2) anodal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Memory retention was assessed seven days after the reencounter phase. When we measured successful access to learned paired-associates in the reencounter phase, there was no difference between the anodal and sham stimulation condition in either Experiment 1 or 2. However, and importantly, anodal stimulation had a detrimental impact on long-term memory but only when stimulation preceded the reencountering of memories (in Experiment 1). Our results suggest that stimulation of the so-called control network during repeated access to acquired information disrupts the long-term retention of these memories. These findings are in line with earlier results showing that repeated access to learned information systematically decreases the involvement of control processes in retrieval and presumably promotes learning through the automatization of cue-target association. At a neural level, a possible substrate of repeated memory reencountering is a shift in frontohippocampal connectivity.

A verbális munkamemória feladata a „beszédszerű”információk átmeneti tárolása és frissítése, kapacitásában jelentős egyéni különbségek figyelhetőek meg, amelyek egy sor kognitív funkció működését modulálják. A verbális munkamemória kapacitásának felmérésére számos diagnosztikai eszköz vált széles körben alkalmazottá, de ezek magyar nyelvű változatai eddig csak szórványos kísérleti vizsgálatokban láttak napvilágot. A verbális munkamemória-tárolási és -frissítési komponensei rendkívüli módon érzékenyek az adott információ hosszúságára, kimondási idejére, fonológiai szerveződésére, így az elsősorban angol nyelvű eszközök mutatói csak korlátozottan voltak használhatóak a magyar nyelvű vizsgálatok számára. Kutatócsoportunk ezt a hiányt pótolta, amikor elkészítette a három legismertebb verbális munkamemória-feladat: a számterjedelmi teszt, az álszóteszt és az olvasásterjedelmi teszt magyar nyelvű változatait. Ebben a tanulmányban a feladatsorokkal együtt közreadjuk a feladatokkal kapcsolatos normatív adatokat is.

Williams syndrome (WMS), a rare neurogenetic disorder, has been inthe forefront of research in cognitive psychology for the last ten years.WMS is characterized by a distinctive cognitive prole: mild to moderate mentalretardation with relatively and surprisingly good linguistic abilities, whileperformance on spatial tasks is extremely poor. Concentrating on the linguisticabilities of children and adolescents with WMS, studies of vocabulary developmentand grammatical development in 15 Hungarian WMS children are presented: childrenwere tested on tasks testing vocabulary, regular and irregular morphological;measures of nonword repetition and digit span were also obtained. In contrastto previous observations, results on the vocabulary task do not show thatuncommon words activated as easily for a WMS child as common ones. Resultsin a picture-naming task support that conforming to the normal pattern, uncommonwords are harder to retrieve. Results on the production of accusative andplural forms conrmed for Hungarian as well that regardless of the frequencyof the item, inected forms of irregulars are harder to produce, and oftenoverregularized in WMS, revealing a dissociation between the rules of grammarvs. the mental lexicon. Performance on rare words in the vocabulary task,and overall performance on the morphology task is associated to the capacityof phonological short-term memory: subjects with higher span perform betteron both tasks. The specication of the close relation between the capacityof phonological short-term memory and their linguistic measures awaits furtherstudy.

A Wilson, Cockburn és Baddeley által kifejlesztett RVMT azokat az emlékezeti képességeket vizsgálja, amelyekre a mindennapi életben szükségünk van, amelyek emlékezeti problémaként vagy amnéziás tünetként jelentkezhetnek. A személyek nevére, arcára, illetve a mindennapi tárgyakra való emlékezés, a prospektív emlékezet (emlékezés arra, amit majd tenni kell), a rövid publikus történetekre való emlékezés, a téri tájékozódás meghatározott feladathoz kötve, valamint a jelenben való tájékozódás képessége szerepel a próbák közt. A teszt különösen érzékeny a korfüggő feledékenység és a kóros amnézia elválasztására. A forgalomban lévő magyar felnőtt változat a szerzők munkája, amelynek kezdeti klinikai tapasztalatairól beszámolunk. Általános tapasztalat, hogy az amnéziás panaszok jelentős része és az ennek alapján készült amnéziás diagnózis nem esik a kóros tartományba, ugyanakkor az esettanulmányok rámutathatnak egy-egy képesség kiemelkedő gyengeségére. Tájékozódó vizsgálatok egészítik ki beszámolónkat a teszt gyermek változatának használatával kapcsolatban. Adataink lehetőséget kínálnak elméleti kérdések felvetésére: példaként a prospektív és retrospektív emlékek próbáit vetjük egybe neurológiai betegek tesztadatain és helyezzük a kérdést elméleti keretbe.

A tanulmány célja a rövid távú emlékezeti rendszerek mérőeljárásainak és ezek neuropszichológiai alkalmazhatóságának bemutatása. Számos neuropszichológiai kórkép hátterében megtalálható a munkamemória valamely alrendszerének károsodása, éppen ezért a mérőeljárások diagnosztikai jelentőséggel bírnak. A tanulmány kiemelten foglalkozik Daneman és Carpenter „olvasásterjedelmi” eljárásának bemutatásával, amelynek magyar változatával az elmúlt években számos kutatást végeztünk. Részletesen fogunk szólni a munkamemória verbális információkért felelős alrendszerének széles körben használt mérőeljárásáról, a „nemszó-ismétlési” tesztről, amelyről az utóbbi évek kutatásai kimutatták, hogy jól használható az SLI (Specific Language Impairment) kórkép diagnosztizálásánál. A tanulmány a neuropszichológiai vonatkozásokon felül megpróbálja felvázolni a különböző tesztek és a munkamemória alrendszereinek kapcsolatát, a validitási problémákat, valamint bemutatja mind a hazai, mind a külföldi kutatási eredményeket

A tanulmány áttekinti a végrehajtó funkciók vizsgálata során felmerülő elméleti problémákat és kísérletet tesz annak felvázolására, hogy milyen lehetséges szerepet játszik az emlékezeti gátlás a flexibilis tervezésben és feladatmegoldásban. Részletesen tárgyalja a kísérleti emlékezetkutatásban széles körben használt emlékezeti gátló paradigmákat, az irányított felejtést, a gondolatelnyomást, az előhívás kiváltotta gátlást, és bemutatja, hogyan hasznosíthatóak ezek az eljárások a kognitív neuropszichológiai vizsgálatoknál. Tanulmányunkban bemutatjuk, milyen patológiás következménye lehet az emlékezeti gátlás károsodásának depresszióban, poszttraumás zavarban és pánikrohamban szenvedő betegeknél. Végül pedig az automatikus emlékezeti gátló folyamatok épsége mellett az intencionális emlékezeti gátlás zavarát demonstráljuk szkizofrén személyeknél.
