AbstractCorundum xenocrysts from alkaline basalt fields differ in characteristics and hence lithospheric origins. Trace element, fluid/melt inclusion and oxygen isotope studies on two eastern Australian corundum deposits are compared to consider their origins. Sapphires from Weldborough, NE Tasmania, are magmatic (high-Ga, av. 200 ppm) and dominated by Fe (av. 3300 ppm) and variable Ti (av. 400 ppm) as chromophores. They contain Cl, Fe, Ga, Ti and CO2-rich fluid inclusions and give d18O values (5.1–6.2‰) of mantle range. Geochronology on companion zircons suggests several sources (from 290 Ma to 47 Ma) were disrupted by basaltic melts (47 ± 0.6 Ma). Gem corundums from Barrington, New South Wales, also include magmatic sapphires (Ga av. 170 ppm; d18O (4.6–5.8‰), but with more Fe (av. 9000 ppm) and less Ti (av. 300 ppm) as chromophores. Zircon dating suggests that gem formation preceded and was overlapped by Cenozoic basaltic melt generation (59–4 Ma). In contrast, a metamorphic sapphire-ruby suite (low-Ga, av. 30 ppm) here incorporates greater Cr into the chromophores (up to 2250 ppm). Fluid inclusions are CO2-poor, but melt inclusions suggest some alkaline melt interaction. The d18O values (5.1–6.2‰) overlap magmatic sapphire values. Interactions at contact zones (T= 780–940°C) between earlier Permian ultramafic bodies and later alkaline fluid activity may explain the formation of rubies.

Abstract The Macraes mine is hosted in an orogenic (mesothermal) gold deposit in metasedimentary rocks of the Otago Schist belt. Much gold occurs within altered schist with minimal silica-addition, and this study focuses on altered schist ore types. The unmineralized host schists are chemically and mineralogically uniform in composition, but include two end-member rock types: feldspathic schist and micaceous schist. Both rock types have undergone hydrothermal alteration along a shallow-dipping foliation-parallel shear zone, but their different rheological properties have affected the style of mineralisation. Micaceous schist has been extensively recrystallized and hydrothermally altered during ductile deformation, to form ores characterized by abundant, disseminated millimetre-scale pyrite cubes (typically 1–2 wt% S) and minor silicification. The earliest pyrite contained Ni and/or As in solid solution and no gold was imaged in these pyrites or later arsenopyrite grains. The ore type is refractory and gold recovery by cyanide leaching is less than 50%, with lowest recovery in rocks that have been less affected by later brittle deformation. In contrast, hydrothermally altered feldspathic schist is characterized by mineralised black microshears and veinlets formed during shear-zone related brittle deformation. Microsheared ore has relatively low sulphur content (<0.7 wt%) and muscovite has been illitised during hydrothermal alteration. Pyrite and arsenopyrite in microshears are fractured and deformed, and contain 1–10 µm blebs of gold. Later pyrite veinlets also contain micron- to submicron-scale inclusions of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and gold (=10 microns). Gold in microsheared ore is more readily recoverable than in the refractory ore, although encapsulation of the fine gold grains inhibits cyanidation. Both microsheared ore and disseminated pyritic ore pass laterally into mineralised black shears, which contain hydrothermal graphite and late-stage cataclastic sulphides. This black, sheared ore releases gold readily, but the gold is then adsorbed on to gangue minerals (preg-robbed) and net cyanidation recovery can be less than 50%. Hence, low gold recovery during cyanidation results from (1) poor liberation of gold encapsulated in microcrystalline quartz and unfractured sulphide grains, and (2) preg-robbing of liberated gold during cyanidation. Introduction of pressure-oxidation of ore prior to cynidation has mitigated these issues.

AbstractThe Denchai gem sapphire deposits in Phrae Province, northern Thailand are closely associated with late Cenozoic alkaline basaltic rocks. The sapphires occur in alluvial placer deposits in palaeo-channels at shallow depths. Electron microprobe analysis of minor and trace element contents (Fe, Ti, Cr, Ga and V) of the sapphires indicate the following oxide abundances: Fe2O3(0.32–1.98 wt.%), TiO2(0.01–0.23 wt.%), Cr2O3(<0.01 wt.%), Ga2O3(0.01–0.03 wt.%) and V2O5(<0.03 wt.%). Optical studies of sapphires revealed three types of primary fluid/melt inclusions. CO2-rich inclusions (Type I) contain three phases (LH2O + LCO2+ V) with the vapour phase comprising <10–15 vol.%. The presence of CO2was confirmed by microthermometry and laser Raman analysis. Polyphase inclusions (Type II) (vapour + liquid + solid) contain a fluid bubble (20–30 vol.%), an aqueous phase (10–15 vol.%) and several solid phases. Silicate-melt inclusions (Type III) comprise vapour bubbles, silicate glass and solid phases. Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis revealed high concentrations of K (~;4 wt.%) as well as Ca (~;0.5 wt.%), Ti (~;1 wt.%), Fe (~;2 wt.%), Mn (~;0.1 wt.%), V (<0.03 wt.%), Rb (~;70 ppm) and Zr (~;200 ppm) in the silicate glass. The Ga2O3abundances and Cr2O3/Ga2O3values (<1) of the sapphires favour their formation by magmatic processes. The presence of CO2-rich fluids and high K concentrations in the silicate melt inclusions link the origin of the Denchai gem sapphires to CO2-rich alkaline magmatism.

The use of particle-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) in conjunction with a scanning nuclear microprobe (SNM) offers one of the few microanalytical techniques capable of studies of elemental concentrations at the ppm level, with a spatial resolution of the order of 1 µm. Beam scanning capabilities and advanced data treatment make it a technique of choice for quantitative two-dimensional studies of elemental distribution. Although the ultimate aim is to obtain true quantitative elemental maps, free of concentration or thickness artifacts, some compromises are necessary owing to experimental and computational restrictions. Some approaches currently used are discussed with emphasis on true elemental imaging using the dynamic analysis method. Examples of applications in geology and biology are shown to illustrate its benefits and limitations. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: Vein-hosted mesothermal stibnite-gold mineralisation at the Hillgrove Au-Sb mine in northeastern New South Wales has a halo of veinlet and disseminated auriferous arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite in metasedimentary and granitic host rocks. About 50–55% of the gold produced at Hillgrove occurs invisibly in arsenopyrite and pyrite. Gold losses of ∼20% into tailings are due to this mineral chemical factor. From PIXE probe analyses, it has been found that arsenopyrite contains 255–1500 ppm Au and pyrite 24–223 ppm Au, with Au contents of each mineral correlating moderately with As content. Arsenopyrite and pyrite also contain anomalous values of Cu, Ag and Sb, whereas paragenetically later stibnite contains little invisible gold, but minor Fe, As, Ag, Cu and Pb. The precipitation of invisible gold in arsenopyrite and pyrite by a possible (Fe, Au)3+= (As-S)3− substitution mechanism may have been facilitated by rapid, non-equilibrium conditions involving pressure decreases and wall rock reaction (sulphidation, carbonatisation), as a prelude to the main stage of stibnite and gold deposition.

Precessions of the 21+ states in198Pt and192Os have been measured in the enhanced transient hyperfine magnetic field acting on these nuclei as they recoiled through thin polarized cobalt foils. Two separate targets consisting of contiguous layers of198Pt and192Os electrodeposited on ~1 µm and ~4 µm Co foils were employed. The levels of interest were Coulomb excited by 80 MeV32S and 220 MeV58Ni beams and the precessions of the 21+?01+ ?-ray angular distributions in both nuclides were measured simultaneously. The results of these studies are compared with recently reported similar studies in which ions of188Os and194Pt recoiled through thin polarized Fe foils. It is concluded that (i) the transient field acting on Pt in Fe is singularly anomalous, and (ii) the recent contention that the g-factors of the 21+ states in the event Pt isotopes may be substantially lower than had been reported in the literature cannot be sustained. This transient field discontinuity is examined in terms of possible molecular orbital electron vacancy sharing between Pt and Fe.

Proton microprobe analyses of the minerals in garnet-peridotite xenoliths from kimberlites show that the partitioning of Ni between chrome pyrope garnet and olivine is strongly temperature(T)-dependent. The range of Ni contents in olivines is small relative to that in the analyzed garnets; a geothermometer therefore can be derived, based only on the Ni content of garnet. This allows estimation of T for single Cr-pyrope grains, such as the inclusions in diamonds, if these can be assumed to have equilibrated with olivine.

Crystalline primary inclusions in diamonds from the Argyle and Ellendale lamproites have been analyzed for Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Pb, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Ta, Ba and Mo by proton microprobe. Eclogite-suite inclusions dominate at Argyle and occur in equal proportions with peridotite-suite inclusions at Ellendale. Eclogitic phases present include garnet, omphacitic clinopyroxene, coesite, rutile, kyanite and sulfide. Eclogitic clinopyroxenes are commonly rich in K and contain 300–1060 ppm Sr and 3–70 ppm Zr: K/Rb increases with K content up to 1400 at 0.7–1.1% K. Rutiles have high Zr and Nb contents with Zr/Nb=1.5–4 and Nb/Ta ~16. Of the peridotite-suite inclusions, olivine commonly contains > 10 ppm Sr and Mo; Cr-pyropes are depleted in Sr, Y and Zr, and enriched in Ni, relative to eclogitic garnets.

Abstract:  The platinum-group elements (PGE) in base metal sulfides (BMS) of the Merensky reef are mostly close to the detection limit of the proton microprobe. The only phase that accommodates appreciable PGE is pentlandite. Total average PGE plus Au grades of the sulfide fraction of the Merensky reef are about 500 ppm. We estimate the modal proportions of the major BMS to be around 53 percent pyrrhotite, 25 percent pentlandite, and 22 percent chalcopyrite (ignoring minor phases). Using this estimate, we calculate by how much the sulfides are oversaturated with respect to individual PGE. With respect to Pt, the sulfides are many times oversaturated, i.e., nearly all Pt occurs as discrete PGE phases. With regard to Pd the sulfides are oversaturated by about a factor of two. The Ru and Rh levels are at and below saturation levels. Available experiments suggest that the entire PGE content of the sulfide fraction can easily be accommodated in solid solution in BMS at temperatures as low as 500°C. The fact that the BMS are oversaturated with most PGE thus indicates that the sulfides have continued to exsolve PGE below that temperature. Calculated sulfur fugacities indicate that f S2 is controlled by silica activity, as expected in high-temperature ores, suggesting that metal/sulfur ratios of the ore may not have changed much since complete solidification of the intercumulus silicate melt of the Merensky reef. All sulfides investigated have cooled below the maximum temperature of pentlandite-pyrite coexistence, which experiments place at 250±30°C. Final closure temperatures of the sulfide-PGE mineral assemblages, approximated by extrapolating the pentlandite-pyrrhotite solvus beyond its experimentally determined range, are possibly as low as 80 to 90°C.

The proton microprobe has been used to measure the trace element contents of Cr-pyrope, olivine and orthopyroxene inclusion (DI) in>60 diamonds from southern Africa, and in concentrate garnets from the host kimberlites. Olivine inclusions show a negative correlation of Ca with Fo content, but olivines coexisting with very subcalcic garnets are anomously depleted in Ca relative to Fo. The maximum and median values of Ti, Zn, Ga, Zr and Y in DI garnets decrease as Ca decreases relative to Cr, consistent with increasing depletion by removal of silicate melts. However, the most subcalcic garnets are anomously enriched in Sr (and LREE). The contrasting depletion in Zr, Y, Ti etc. and enrichment in Sr is not consistent with a single-stage depletion event. The extreme Ca depletion of the most subcalcic garnets and their coexisting olivines, and the Sr enrichment, are interpreted as the result of metasomatism by a carbonatitic fluid following depletion. Trapping temperatures of garnet DI, estimated by nickel thermometry range from 950 to > 1500°C. Most DI with T>1200°C are lherzolitic, rather than subcalcic. In most pipes studied, the trapping T of DI garnets is higher than the T range of equivalent garnets from concentrates. The high Ts are interpreted as reflecting the formation of diamonds during short-lived thermal pulses, followed by cooling toward a conductive geotherm. The T distribution of calcic and subcalcic garnets in concentrates from kimberlites suggests that lherzolite and harzburgite are intimately intermixed over the depth range 150–180 km beneath the Kalahari craton. The abundance of calcic garnets with T>1200°C suggests the presence of significant amounts of lherzolite at greater depths. This deeper lherzolite may be associated with eclogite, and may be the source region for some high-T lherzolitic DI garnets.

Minerals occurring in dry and modally metasomatized spinel lherzolites from western Victoria have been analysed by proton microprobe for Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Ba, Pb, Br, rare-earth elements (REE), Th and U. Mass-balance calculations demonstrate that these trace elements are contained in specific acceptor minerals and do not occur in significant concentrations at clean grain boundaries. The level of particular trace elements in the rock depends on the presence of specific phases: for example high levels of REE, Sr (and U, Th, Br) require apatite, while Ba, Nb and Ta are strongly concentrated in amphibole±mica. Mantle metasomatism in these spinel lherzolites is inferred to result from an open-system process involving infiltration of fluids released by crystallizing silicate melts. This process produces metasomatic zones with different modal mineralogy and hence greatly different trace-element signatures. The data demonstrate that large-ion-lithophile (LIL) and high-field strength (HFS) elements in metasomatized spinel lherzolites are strongly concentrated in non-refractory phases, which will break down easily in heated volumes such as the walls of magma conduits. The heterogeneity observed in trace-element patterns of intraplate alkali basaltic rocks may not reflect source heterogeneity, but may result largely from contamination by metasomatized mantle wall rock. The KDs for most trace elements show little temperature dependence except for KDSr between orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene where KD decreases with increasing temperature. The generally uniform KDs can be used to test for disequilibrium in such assemblages.

AbstractThe proton microprobe has been used to determine contents of Ca, Ti, Ni, Mn and Zn in the olivine of 54 spinel lherzolite xenoliths from Australian and Chinese basalts. These data are compared with proton-probe data for Ni, Mn and Zn in the olivine of 180 garnet peridotite xenoliths from African and Siberian kimberlites. Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn contents are well-correlated; because the spinel lherzolite olivines have higher mean Fe contents than garnet peridotite olivines (average Fo89.6vs.Fo90–92) they also have lower Ni and higher Mn contents. Zn and Fe are well-correlated in garnet peridotite olivine, but in spinel peridotites this relationship is perturbed by partitioning of Zn into spinel. None of these elements shows significant correlation with temperature. Consistent differences in trace-element contents of olivines in the two suites is interpreted as reflecting the greater degree of depletion of Archean garnet peridotites as compared to Phanerozoic spinel lherzolites. Ca and Ti contents of spinel-peridotite olivine are well correlated with one another, and with temperature as determined by several types of geothermometer. However, Ca contents are poorly correlated with pressure as determined by the Ca-in-olivine barometer of Köhler and Brey (1990). This reflects the strong T-dependence of this barometer: the uncertainty in pressure (calculated by this method) which is produced by the ±50°C uncertainty expected of any geothermometer is ca ± 8 kbar, corresponding to the entire width of the spinel-lherzolite field at 900–1200°C.

AbstractThe micro-inclusions located in the genetic centre of Yakutian diamond monocrystals have been studied using optical (anomalous birefringence, photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence) and microanalytical (electron-microprobe, proton-microprobe, scanning electron microscope) methods. Most diamonds nucleated heterogeneously on mineral seeds, that lowered the energy barrier to nucleation. Nucleation of peridotitic diamonds occurred on a matrix of graphite+iron+wüstite, in an environment dominated by forsteritic olivine and Fe-Ni sulfide. Nucleation of eclogitic diamonds occurred on a matrix of sulfide ± iron in an environment dominated by Fe-sulfide and omphacite (±-K-Na-Al-Si-melt). The mineral assemblages recorded in the central inclusions of Yakutian diamonds indicate that they grew in a reduced environment, with oxygen fugacity controlled by the iron-wüstite equilibrium. Nucleation of diamond occurred in the presence of a fluid, possibly a volatile-rich silicate melt, highly enriched in LIL (K, Ba, Rb, Sr) and HFSE (Nb, Ti, Zr) elements. This fluid also carried immiscible Fe-Ni-sulfide melts, and possibly a carbonatitic component; the introduction of this fluid into a reduced refractory environment may have been accompanied by a thermal pulse, and may have created the conditions necessary for the nucleation and growth of diamond.

The first isolation of Mycobacterium haemophilum in Victoria was from 8-month-old leg lesions in an immunosuppressed renal transplant patient. Characteristics of the isolate that had not been described previously for M. haemophilum included growth enhancement by carbon dioxide, a temperature optimum that was lower than previously reported, and the surprisingly slow growth of the primary isolate.
