ABSTRACTEngaging young people with art requires pedagogical sensitivity and skill. This paper is drawn from a larger project examining artful inquiry in the gallery. It explores a particular aspect of gallery educator practice, namely talk, which is identified as conversation, discussion and dialogue. Knowing which mode of talk to use and when, in order to best address the needs of students at any given time, is guided by educators’ attunement to student engagement. Focusing on one interaction between an educator, students and an artwork, this paper explores how educators use different modes of talk to animate, focus and deepen the engagement young people have with artworks.

The hard segments in MDI/diol-based polyurethanes form crystalline domains, and these have been found to exist in different polymorphic structures depending on processing history. Structures of the crystal structures of low molecular weight urethane model compounds possess a number of common features that can be used to predict models for the polymers. Specifically, information is derived concerning the conformation of the diphenylmethane, phenyl-urethane, and chain extender region of the chain. This information has been used to predict the possible conformation of poly (MDI/diol) chains in which the diol region is fully extended (all trans). Less information is available that is relevant to the structures that have a more contracted conformation, but the options to be considered are discussed.

The metabolic fate of the orally effective cephalosporin antibiotic cefaclor (Lilly 99638) has been studied in rats, mice, and dogs. Cefaclor is efficiently absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract as the intact antibiotic. In rats and mice, cefaclor, for the most part, escapes metabolism in the body and is eliminated unchanged as unaltered antibiotic, primarily by renal excretion. In dogs, however, cefaclor is more labile to metabolism and only a portion of the administered antibiotic is eliminated unchanged via the kidney.

The biotransformation of the parenterally effective cephalosporin antibiotic cefamandole nafate (I) has been studied in rats and dogs. After rapid in vivo hydrolysis of the nafate pharmaceutical form to cefamandole (II), the antibiotic was found to be very resistant to metabolic degradation in both species. In dogs, cefamandole escaped metabolism and was eliminated as unaltered antibiotic almost exclusively by renal excretion. In rats, cefamandole was somewhat labile to metabolism; however, a major portion of the administered antibiotic was eliminated unchanged principally by renal excretion.

When isolated bullfrog small intestine is mounted between identical Ringer solutions in which chloride is replaced by sulfate, short circuit current and net mucosal-serosal Na+flux are identical. This identity is preserved in the presence of actively transported sugars and amino acids. In the presence of a constant concentration of Na+, both sugars and amino acids increase the transmural pd and short circuit current when added to the mucosal bathing fluid. Addition of these substances to the serosal medium only has no effect. The increases in transmural pd and short circuit current show identical saturation characteristics with respect to the concentration of added solute and can be described in terms of simple Michaelis-Menten kinetics. These effects are not dependent on metabolism of the added solute. Addition of a second actively transported sugar to the mucosal solution during maximal stimulation by another sugar had no effect on transmural pd or short circuit current. Addition of an amino acid under these conditions caused an additional saturable increase in these parameters. Similarly, addition of an actively transported sugar during maximal stimulation by an amino acid caused a saturable increase in transmural pd and short circuit current. The kinetics of the response of the short circuit current to L-valine were unaffected by D-glucose. L-Valine decreased both the Kmand the maximal short circuit current obtained with glucose.
