The quantitative characterization of the graphene sheet content in carbon-containing materials is arguable and has not yet been developed. The authors report on a feasible method to characterize graphene sheet content quantitatively in pyrolized carbon materials using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrometer. A direct carbonation at 300 °C followed by catalytic pyrolysis (heat-treatment temperature was set at 700–1400 °C) under a vacuum condition was used for turning wood waste into pyrolized wood char powders. The graphene content in the samples was calculated through an analysis of full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the carbon (100) crystal plane at around 42°–43° in XRD. Results showed that the FWHM and the calculated graphene sheet content of pyrolized wood char powders depended on the heat-treatment temperature, and the FWHM of wood char powder with well-developed graphene sheets (100%) was determined to be 5.0. In addition, the trend to 100% graphene sheet-contained pyrolized carbon powder was obtained at a heat-treatment temperature of 2700 °C. The resistivity of the wood char powder with 100% graphene sheets was predicted to be 0.01 Ω cm, close to our experimental data of 0.012 and 0.006 Ω cm for commercial graphite and graphene products, respectively. Functionally graded materials, including their characterization, properties and production methods are a new rapidly developing field of materials science. The aims of this review are to systematize the basic production techniques for manufacturing functionally graded materials. Attention is paid to the principles for obtaining graded structure mainly in the metal based functionally graded materials. Several unpublished results obtained by the authors have been discussed briefly. Experimental methods and theoretical analysis for qualitative and quantitative estimation of graded properties have also been presented. The article can be useful for people who work in the field of functionally graded structures and materials, and who need a compact informative review of recent experimental and theoretical activity in this area. Abstract: Continuum mechanics predicts that the propagation speed of non-equilibrium information in solids is limited by the longitudinal wave speed, so is crack propagation. However, solids are essentially discrete systems. In this paper, via theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, it is demonstrated in a straightforward way that non-equilibrium disturbance (e.g. force, displacement, energy, and so on) can propagate at a supersonic speed in discrete systems, although the magnitude of the disturbance attenuates very quickly. In dynamic fracture, a cascade of atomic-bond breaking events provides an amplification mechanism to counterbalance the attenuation of the disturbance. Therefore, supersonic crack propagation can be realized in a domino way. Another key factor for supersonic crack propagation is to ensure sufficient energy flowing into the crack tip. Since most energy can only be transferred at a speed limited by the longitudinal wave speed, the conditions for the occurrence of supersonic crack propagation are not easily met in most situations, unless there is high pre-stored energy along the crack path or continuous energy supply from the loading concomitantly moving with the crack tip. A quantitative relation between supersonic crack propagation speed and material properties and parameters is given, which implies that knowing all the classical macroscopic quantities is not enough in determining the supersonic crack propagation speed, and the microstructure does play a role. Moreover, it is interesting to note that fracture toughness affects the crack propagation speed in the subsonic regime, but not in the supersonic regime, because the deformation/stress is uniform in front of a supersonic crack where strength criterion dominates. We demonstrate that the polarizability anisotropy of the acetylene molecule could be experimentally determined by molecular alignment-induced spatial focusing and defocusing effects under femtosecond impulsive excitation. The molecular alignment signals of oxygen and acetylene were measured under identical experimental conditions and the polarizability anisotropy of acetylene was quantitatively determined with oxygen as the reference molecule. We focus our analysis on the strongly interacting regime, where the on-site repulsion is of the order of or greater than the band width. We compute the equation of state, double occupancy, entropy, uniform susceptibility, and spin correlations for temperatures that are similar to or below the ones achieved in current optical lattice experiments. We provide a quantitative analysis of adiabatic cooling of trapped fermions in two dimensions, by means of both flattening the trapping potential and increasing the interaction strength. By measuring the gain length in an opal-based photonic crystal doped with laser dye, we demonstrate that optical amplification is more than twenty-fold enhanced along the Γ-K symmetry directions of the face-centered-cubic photonic crystal. An analytical RPLC method for sesquiterpene lactones in ARNICA MONTANA has been extended to include quantitative analyses of dihydrohelenalin esters. LC-ESI-MS-MS distinguished the isomeric helenalin and dihydrohelenalin esters. The dihydrohelenalin esters have lower response factors for UV detection than do helenalin esters, which must be taken into account for quantitative analyses. Analyses of flowers from 16 different wild populations of A.?MONTANA in Spain showed differing proportions of helenalin and dihydrohelenalin esters. For the first time a chemotype with high levels of helenalin esters (total helenalins 5.2-10.3?mg/g dry weight) is reported in Spanish A.?MONTANA. These samples were from heath lands at high altitude (1?330-1?460?m), whereas samples from meadows and peat bogs at lower altitudes were the expected chemotype with high levels of dihydrohelenalin esters (total dihydrohelenalins 10.9-18.2?mg/g). The phenolic compounds, both flavonoid glycosides and caffeoylquinic acids, in Spanish A.?MONTANA are reported for the first time. The levels of several of these compounds differed significantly between samples from heath lands and samples from peat bogs or meadows, with the heath land samples being most similar to central European A.?MONTANA in their phenolic composition.
