Background: Insular thyroid carcinoma (ITC) is an uncommon poorly differentiated thyroid malignancy. Due to its rarity, its demographic and clinicopathological features and survival remains unclear. The present study aimed to describe the features and survival of ITC, determine its prognostic factors, and establish a prognostic nomogram. Methods: Patients with ITC were identified in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database from 2004 to 2019. The features and survival of patients with ITC and other thyroid carcinomas were compared after balancing the baseline characteristics using propensity score matching (PSM). Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses were used to identify the prognostic factors for ITC. Moreover, overall survival (OS)- or cancer-specific survival (CSS)-specific nomograms were established to predict ITC prognosis. Results: A total of 206 patients with ITCs were identified. The 1-, 2-, 5-, and 10-year OS rates of 206 patients with ITC were 90.3%, 82.0%, 62.2%, and 42.5%, respectively. The median OS was 93 months (95% CI, 73.0–140.0), while the median CSS was 141 months (95% CI, 93.0–173.0). After PSM analysis, the survival analysis of the matched cohort revealed that ITC had a worse clinical outcome than papillary thyroid cancer and follicular thyroid cancer, and better survival than anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. Multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated that age, N stage, M stage, and surgery were independent prognostic factors for both OS and CSS in ITC patients. The C-indices for the OS- and CSS-specific nomograms were 0.778 (95% CI, 0.724–0.832) and 0.808 (95% CI, 0.754–0.862), respectively. The calibration curve and ROC analysis indicated that the nomogram models exhibited a good discriminative ability. Decision curve analysis suggested that the nomogram models had a significant positive net benefit and were better than the traditional TNM staging system at predicting survival. Conclusion: ITC has distinct clinicopathological characteristics and survival compared to other thyroid carcinomas, and the established nomogram could predict the survival probability of patients with ITC accurately with a higher net benefit.

The benefits of social learning have been recognized by existing research. To explore knowledge distribution in social learning and its effects on learning achievement, we developed a social learning platform and explored students' behaviors of peer interactions by the proposed algorithms based on social network analysis. An empirical study was also conducted on a college course to investigate the correlation between peer interaction and learning achievement. The experiment results show that the students who tended to actively contribute knowledge to peers on the social learning platform had better learning achievements than the students who were used to the passive reception of knowledge. Besides, the knowledge transmitters and intermediaries performed better in learning achievement as well, and the knowledge contributors had closer interactions with their peers. The implications derived from the findings can inspire instructors/researchers to facilitate effective social learning, and provide suggestions to develop effective algorithms to analyze social interaction behaviors.

2nd order implicit format is implemented in the Navier-Stokes code to deal with instantaneous item unsteady flows. Three simulations are made to testify the method on flow control. First, the external flow fields of synthetic jets are simulated, the mean velocity on the center line, the jet width and velocity distribution are compared well with experimental results. Secondly, the flow fields of synthetic jet in a crossflow are simulated, orifice slot, the mean velocity on the center line and velocity distribution are compared well with experimental results. Finally, the flow control experiments on separation of airfoil are simulated, control methods include steady suction and synthetic jets. Both methods show their ability to favorably effect the flow separation, shortening the length of separation bubble and improving the pressure levels in separation areas in different degrees.

Distributed object‐oriented platforms are increasingly important over wireless environments for providing frameworks for collaborative computations and for managing a large pool of distributed resources. Due to limited bandwidths and heterogeneous architectures of wireless devices, studies are needed into supporting object‐oriented frameworks over heterogeneous wireless environments and optimizing system performance. In our research work, we are working towards efficiently supporting object‐oriented environments over heterogeneous wireless environments. In this paper, we report the issues and our research results related to the efficient support of Java RMI over a Bluetooth environment. In our work, we first implement support for Java RMI over Bluetooth protocol stacks, by incorporating a set of protocol stack layers for Bluetooth developed by us (which we call JavaBT) and by supporting the L2CAP layer with sockets that support the RMI socket. In addition, we model the cost for the access patterns of Java RMI communications. This cost model is used to guide the formation and optimizations of the scatternets of a Java RMI Bluetooth environment. In our approach, we employ the well‐known BTCP algorithm to observe initial configurations for the number of piconets. Using the communication‐access cost as a criterion, we then employ a spectral‐bisection method to cluster the nodes in a piconet and then use a bipartite matching scheme to form the scatternet. Experimental results with the prototypes of Java RMI support over a Bluetooth environment show that our scatternet‐formation algorithm incorporating an access‐cost model can further optimize the performances of such as system. Several signaling pathways are activated by interferon α (IFNα) in hematopoietic cells, including the Jak-Stat and the insulin receptor substrate (IRS) pathways. It has been previously shown that IFNα activates the phosphatidylinositol (PI) 3′-kinase via an interaction of the p85 subunit of PI 3′-kinase with IRS proteins. Other studies have proposed that Stat-3 also functions as an adapter for p85. We sought to identify the major pathway that regulates IFNα activation of the PI3′-kinase in hematopoietic cells. Our data demonstrate that IFNα induces the interaction of p85 with IRS-1 or IRS-2, but not Stat-3, in various hematopoietic cell lines in which IRS-1 and/or IRS-2 and Stat-3 are activated by IFNα. In addition, inhibition of PI 3′-kinase activity by preincubation of cells with the PI 3′-kinase inhibitor LY294002 does not affect IFN-dependent formation of SIF complexes that contain Stat-3. To determine whether phosphorylation of tyrosine residues in the IFN receptor is required for activation of the PI 3′-kinase, we performed studies using mouse L929 fibroblasts transfected with mutated human IFNAR1 and/or IFNAR2 subunits of the Type I IFN receptor, lacking tyrosine phosphorylation sites. The serine kinase activity of the PI-3K was activated by human IFNα in these cells, suggesting that phosphorylation of the Type I IFN receptor is not essential for PI3K activation. We then determined whether IFNα activates the Akt kinase, a known downstream target for PI 3′-kinase that mediates anti-apoptotic signals. Akt was activated by insulin or IGF-1, but not IFNα, in the IFNα-sensitive U-266 myeloma cell line. Altogether, our data establish that the IRS pathway and not the Stat pathway, is the major pathway regulating engagement of PI 3′-kinase in hematopoietic cells. Furthermore, the selective activation of Akt by insulin/IGF-1 suggests the existence of distinct regulatory activities of PI3′-kinase in growth factor versus interferon signaling.

Air separation of a cholesteric liquid crystalline triheptyl cellulose/ethyl cellulose (3/97) binary composite membrane prepared from tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, and dichloromethane solutions was studied at different pressure differences across the membrane by the variable volume method. With an increasing pressure difference in the range from 0.06 to 0.42 MPa, the flux and the oxygen concentration of the oxygen-enriched air through the membrane both increase. The air separation capability depends on the boiling point of the membrane-forming solvent and the membrane thickness.

We describe a novel technique capable of controlling the oxygen content of YBa2Cu3Ox(YBCO) films in a precise and reversible manner. The temperature dependence of resistivity and the distinct two-plateau behavior in critical temperature Tcoversus oxygen content plot of these films are consistent with those observed in the bulk and single crystals of YBCO. The O 1sand Cu 2pabsorption spectra of these films were measured by polarization-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The intensity variations of the pre-edge peaks as a function of oxygen content are discussed. We also used these films to systematically study the electron-phonon coupling strength and the position of Fermi level by using a femtosecond pump-probe technique. A clear sign-reversal of the transient reflectivity, which was consistently explained by the thermomodulation model, was observed. Both of these optical measurements support the idea that the electronic structure of YBCO cuprates is based on the charge transfer model with hybridization between the Cu and O sites.
