3. Binocular dynamics of accommodation, convergence, and pupil size in myopes

- Abstract
The purpose of this work is to study the dynamics of the accommodative response as a function of the subject's refractive error, as a first step in determining whether an anomalous accommodative function could affect emmetropization or trigger myopia progression. A secondary goal was to establish potential relationships between the speed of accommodation and other parameters in the accommodation process. Parameters related to the speed and amplitude of accommodation, convergence, miosis, and change in high-order aberrations were measured during the accommodative process for 2.8 D demand in 18 young healthy subjects (mean age 25.0 ± 4.7 years) with a range of refractive errors between 0 and -7.5 D (spherical equivalent). Measurements were performed in real time (25 Hz) with an open-view binocular Hartmann-Shack (HS) sensor using a GPU-based processing unit. Correlation coefficients were calculated between refractive error and each computed variable. Additionally, the speed of accommodation was correlated with all the other parameters in the study. Correlation coefficients with refractive error had non-zero values for several parameters of the accommodative response but p-values were higher than 0.05 except in two cases: with pupil miosis speed (R = –0.49, p = 0.041) and with lag of accommodation (R = –0.57, p = 0.014). Additionally, correlation values with p-value < 0.05 were found between accommodation speed and convergence duration (R = 0.57, p = 0.014), convergence speed (R = 0.48, p = 0.044), and pupil miosis amplitude (R = 0.47, p = 0.049). We did not find strong evidence of a link between myopia and altered dynamics of the accommodation process. Only miosis speed was found to be correlated to refractive error with p < 0.05, being slower for myopes. On the other hand, increased lag of accommodation tends to be associated to larger refractive errors. Additionally, our data suggests that the faster the accommodation, the faster and longer the convergence and the larger the pupil miosis.

5. Perceived stress and positive and negative emotions in parents of preterm babies

- Abstract
The arrival of a new-born baby drastically changes the parents’ lives. Several authors have reached the conclusion that this vital event can even lead to a post-traumatic stress disorder. This fact is especially relevant when it comes to correctly coping with this situation. The role played by the emotions involved in this process as well as the stress suffered by parents experiencing such a change are recognized by previous studies. In this paper, we carried out a comparative study between the emotions and stressful situations experienced by preterm and term babies’ progenitors. The results show how the group of parents of preterm babies is more affected by stress and negative emotions. In this sense, the spectrum widens to an almost unprecedented relevant field in psychological research that allows us to see how the parents of premature children experience this circumstance.

7. Dynamics of the near response under natural viewing conditions with an open-view sensor

- Abstract
We have studied the temporal dynamics of the near response (accommodation, convergence and pupil constriction) in healthy subjects when accommodation was performed under natural binocular and monocular viewing conditions. A binocular open-view multi-sensor based on an invisible infrared Hartmann-Shack sensor was used for non-invasive measurements of both eyes simultaneously in real time at 25Hz. Response times for each process under different conditions were measured. The accommodative responses for binocular vision were faster than for monocular conditions. When one eye was blocked, accommodation and convergence were triggered simultaneously and synchronized, despite the fact that no retinal disparity was available. We found that upon the onset of the near target, the unblocked eye rapidly changes its line of sight to fix it on the stimulus while the blocked eye moves in the same direction, producing the equivalent to a saccade, but then converges to the (blocked) target in synchrony with accommodation. This open-view instrument could be further used for additional experiments with other tasks and conditions.

- Abstract
Title III of the Directive 2014/26/EU of 26 February 2014, regulates multiterritorial licensing by collective management organisations of authors' rights in musical works for online use. Nevertheless, the system of multi-territorial licences does not apply to related rights. This article intends to provide a general view of the legal and practical consequences arising from the exploitation acts, through the online environment, with regard to performers' and producers' intellectual property rights: the relevant rights involved (the differences between the making available and communication to the public rights) and the difficulties for performers on getting a fair remuneration in this environment. The experiences on collective management, with a particular focus on the Spanish transposition of the making available right and other legal systems are also explained.

9. Comparison of binocular through-focus visual acuity with monovision and a small aperture inlay

Corneal small aperture inlays provide extended depth of focus as a solution to presbyopia. As this procedure is becoming more popular, it is interesting to compare its performance with traditional approaches, such as monovision. Here, binocular visual acuity was measured as a function of object vergence in three subjects by using a binocular adaptive optics vision analyzer. Visual acuity was measured at two luminance levels (photopic and mesopic) under several optical conditions: 1) natural vision (4 mm pupils, best corrected distance vision), 2) pure-defocus monovision ( + 1.25 D add in the nondominant eye), 3) small aperture monovision (1.6 mm pupil in the nondominant eye), and 4) combined small aperture and defocus monovision (1.6 mm pupil and a + 0.75 D add in the nondominant eye). Visual simulations of a small aperture corneal inlay suggest that the device extends DOF as effectively as traditional monovision in photopic light, in both cases at the cost of binocular summation. However, individual factors, such as aperture centration or sensitivity to mesopic conditions should be considered to assure adequate visual outcomes.

Accumulating evidence suggests that evening-type adolescents are exposed to a number of determinants that might have a negative impact on their health condition. Given that few studies have investigated the association between chronotype and quality of life measures in large samples of adolescents, the aim of this study was to assess the relationship between morningness-eveningness and health-related quality of life among 1600 adolescents (aged 12-16 years). Adolescents completed the Ve?? et Sant? Per?ue de L'adolescent (VSP-A)and the Morningness-Eveningness Scale for Children (MESC). Girls and older adolescents reported worse health indicators and were more evening oriented. Evening-type adolescents obtained lower scores on vitality, physical and psychological well-being, body image, relations with parents, relations with teachers, school work and global health scale.

11. Profiles of Human Milk Oligosaccharides and Production of Some Human Milk Oligosaccharides in Transgenic Animals

- Abstract
During the decade of the 1990s and the first years of the current century, our group embarked on a project to study and synthesize human milk oligosaccharides. This report describes 2 unexpected collateral observations from that endeavor. The first observation was the detection and confirmation of 2 rare neutral human milk oligosaccharides profiles that were uncovered while assessing oligosaccharide content in hundreds of samples of human milk. One of these lacked fucosylated structures altogether, and the other lacked the oligosaccharide 3-fucosyllactose [Galβ1–4(Fucα1–3)Glc]. We used glycoconjugate probes to determine whether the unusual profiles were mirrored by fucosylation of milk glycoproteins. The results show that the lack of fucosylated oligosaccharides in these samples corresponds to the absence of equivalent fucosylated motifs in milk glycoproteins. The second finding was a shortened and distinct lactation process in transgenic rabbits expressing the human fucosyltransferase 1. During the first day of lactation, these animals expressed milk that contained both lactose and 2′-fucosylactose, but on the second day, the production of milk was severely diminished, and by the fourth day, no lactose was detected in their milk. Meanwhile, the concentration of fucosylated glycoproteins increased from the onset of lactation through its premature termination. These 2 findings may shed light on the glycobiology of milk and perhaps on mammary gland differentiation.

12. Adaptive optics binocular visual simulator to study stereopsis in the presence of aberrations

- Abstract
A binocular adaptive optics visual simulator has been devised for the study of stereopsis and of binocular vision in general. The apparatus is capable of manipulating the aberrations of each eye separately while subjects perform visual tests. The correcting device is a liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator permitting the control of aberrations in the two eyes of the observer simultaneously in open loop. The apparatus can be operated as an electro-optical binocular phoropter with two micro-displays projecting different scenes to each eye. Stereo-acuity tests (three-needle test and random-dot stereograms) have been programmed for exploring the performance of the instrument. As an example, stereo-acuity has been measured in two subjects in the presence of defocus and/or trefoil, showing a complex relationship between the eye’s optical quality and stereopsis. This instrument might serve for a better understanding of the relationship of binocular vision and stereopsis performance and the eye’s aberrations.

13. The Structure and its Dependence on the Magnetic Properties of Ni5CoXCu95-X Alloys Produced by Mechanical Alloying and Subsequent Annealing

Lower energy-ball milling was used to prepare magnetic granular Ni5CoXCu95-X alloys produced by mechanical alloying through a milling process and subsequent annealing process, have been investigated. The pure copper shows high electrical conductivity and malleability, however the Cu-Co system in the thermodynamic equilibrium is non-soluble below 500ºC. Nevertheless, mechanical alloyed particles of Cu with 5-7%Co and 5%Ni can be subjected to annealing at 500ºC or consolidation-sintering treatments to obtain composite materials thereby improving their mechanical and magnetic properties suitable for electronic devices. The ultrafine Co and (Co,Ni) particles reduced and dispersed in the copper powder matrix with milling times of 20 to 60 h and thus affected the magnetic properties of the as-milled Ni5CoXCu95-X powder obtained from this non-equilibrium phases synthesis. The magnetic properties of the supersaturated solid solutions are strongly dependent on the interactions among the magnetic particles and the nanometric size of these particles. The morphology, structure and size of as-milled and sintered powders were characterized by SEM, HRTEM and XRD techniques. The results show that the microstructure, hardness and magnetic properties of the granular Ni5CoXCu95-X alloy have strong dependence of milling time. The continuous decrement of Ms as a function of milling time is a consequence to the variation of phase in the composition with formation of CoNi particle and the partial change of fcc-Co to hcp-Co. Super-paramagnetic behavior is observed in both as-milled and annealed powders, with a maximum Hc of 250-260 Oe obtained for 7%Co after 60h of milling. The effect of Nickel on the Ni5CoXCu95-X can be explained as Ni content inhibit the two-solid (Cu-Co) phases segregation of the alloys when annealed at high temperature, leading to a grained structure with precipitated Co particles in homogeneous Cu-Ni strengthened solid solution matrix.

14. Influence of the Milling Time on Mechanical and Magnetic Properties of Cu90Co5Ni5 Alloy Obtained by Mechanical Alloying

The structure, mechanical and magnetic properties of Cu90Co5Ni5 alloys produced by mechanical alloying and subsequent cold consolidation and sintering behavior, have been investigated. A system of small Co and Ni magnetic particles embedded in the non-magnetic copper matrix were prepared through a mechanical milling process by using a planetary ball mill under argon atmosphere for 20 to 60 h. The morphology and particles size, phase formation and chemical composition of the alloyed powder samples for each milling time were characterized by scanning electron microscope and powder X-ray diffraction techniques, respectively. After milling for 60 h, a supersaturated solid solution with coercive field Hc with maximum value of 235Oe was obtained. The continuous decreasing trend of saturation magnetization (Ms) with increasing of milling time can be explained by the reduction of copper oxide by (CoNi) oxide formation, confirmed by powder XRD patterns. The XRD analyses of the as-milled samples revealed that the Bragg peaks of FCC-Co changed partially to HCP-Co on increasing the milling time. Cu90Co5Ni5 powders cold consolidated and sintered at 650ºC for 1h segregated mainly into two-phases of mixed (fcc,hc)-Co and fcc-CuNi. After sintering, the mechanical properties for 60h milling reached its optimum, 26HV in hardness corresponding to 250MPa as compressive strength. TEM microanalysis of sintered alloys revealed Co cluster of 2 to 5 nm in size separated each one by 10 to 20 nm in size. The variation of magnetic properties and its dependence on structural-precipitation change with milling time are discussed.

15. Wide-angle chromatic aberration corrector for the human eye

- Abstract
The human eye is affected by large chromatic aberration. This may limit vision and makes it difficult to see fine retinal details in ophthalmoscopy. We designed and built a two-triplet system for correcting the average longitudinal chromatic aberration of the eye while keeping a reasonably wide field of view. Measurements in real eyes were conducted to examine the level and optical quality of the correction. We also performed some tests to evaluate the effect of the corrector on visual performance.

16. In Vitro and In Vivo Effects of Soluble, Monovalent Globotriose on Bacterial Attachment and Colonization

- Abstract
ABSTRACTEpithelial cells lining the urinary tract are rich in globo series glycolipids, structurally defined by a Galα1,4Gal motif in the oligosaccharide moiety of this glycolipid family. This Galα1,4Gal motif is the attachment target for the P-fimbrial adhesin of uropathogenic Escherichia coli. We investigated the ability of a trisaccharide analog of this core motif, globotriose (Galα1,4Galβ1,4Glc), to interfere with uropathogen attachment and colonization in vitro and in vivo. We assessed the ability of globotriose to inhibit and reverse the binding and agglutination of a P-fimbriated strain of E. coli(JR1) using human erythrocytes and immortalized human colonic epithelial cells as targets. Globotriose (5 mg/ml) completely inhibited and reversed cell agglutination and caused a 10- to 100-fold reduction in JR1 binding to target cells, as determined by flow cytometry. In preparation for an in vivo efficacy study, we investigated the distribution and pharmacokinetics of globotriose in the BALB/c mouse. Globotriose was administered via the tail vein, targeting an instantaneous plasma concentration of 5 mg/ml, and in a different experiment, animals were gavaged at 10 times the intravenous (i.v.) dose. Globotriose was rapidly cleared from plasma (half-life [t1/2], 6 min) and slowly excreted via the kidney (t1/2, 4 h). Urine levels of >5 mg/ml were maintained from 4 to 12 h after the i.v. bolus dose, which resulted in a 1-log reduction in established bladder colonization by JR1. These results suggest that free, soluble globotriose is a feasible alternative therapy for urinary tract infections.

17. Effect of the polarization on ocular wave aberration measurements

- Abstract
Measurement of the eye’s wave aberrations has become fairly standard in recent years. However, most studies have not taken into account the possible influence of the polarization state of light on the wave aberration measurements. The birefringence properties of the eye’s optical components, in particular corneal birefringence, can be expected to have an effect on the wave aberration estimates obtained under different states of polarization for the measurement light. In the work described, we used a psychophysical aberrometer (the spatially resolved refractometer) to measure the effect of changes in the polarization state of the illumination light on the eye’s wave aberration estimates obtained in a single pass. We find, contrary to our initial expectation, that the polarization state of the measurement light has little influence on the measured wave aberration. For each subject, the differences in wave aberrations across polarization states were of the same order as the variability in aberrations across consecutive estimates of the wave front for the same polarization conditions.

A description of a Hartmann-Shack sensor to measure the aberrations of the human eye is presented. We performed an analysis of the accuracy and limitations of the sensor using experimental results and computer simulations. We compared the ocular modulation transfer function obtained from simultaneously recorded double-pass and Hartmann-Shack images. The following factors affecting the sensor performance were evaluated: the statistical accuracy, the number of modes used to reconstruct the wave front, the size of the microlenses, and the exposure time. 19. Variability of Human Milk Neutral Oligosaccharides in a Diverse Population

A complex array of free oligosaccharides is a distinctive compositional feature of human milk. Although these oligosaccharides have been studied for several years, their variability and distribution have not been systematically studied, and their nutritional and functional roles have not been elucidated. This report describes a study in which a large number of human milk samples were analyzed for the presence and content of nine neutral oligosaccharides. The resultant data were used to probe for distribution trends by donor groups and stage of lactation. Milk samples from 435 women residing in 10 countries were analyzed using a simple preparation procedure, gel filtration, and high‐performance anion‐exchange chromatography. All samples contained structures based on lacto‐N‐neotetraose and lacto‐N‐tetraose. This contrasts with the fucosyloligosaccharides tested, none of which was detected in 100% of the samples. Unexpected distribution trends were observed. For example, 100% of the samples from Mexico (n= 156) contained 2´‐fucosyllactose, whereas only 46% of the samples from the Philippines (n= 22) contained this structure. Concentration ranges for the analyzed oligosaccharides revealed quantitative and qualitative distribution trends. The oligosaccharide composition of human milk varied among samples. The geographical origin of the donors was one of the factors that accounted for this variability. This can be explained by genetically determined traits that are not uniformly distributed. Results indicated that further systematic studies are needed to ascertain the effect of other factors, such as lactation stage or diet.

21. Correction of the aberrations in the human eye with a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator: limits to performance

- Abstract
We evaluated the performance of a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator for static correction of the aberrations in the human eye. By applying phase-retrieval techniques to pairs of double-pass images we first estimated the wave aberration of the eye to be corrected. Then we introduced the opposite phase map in the modulator, which was placed in a plane conjugated with the eye’s pupil, and we recorded double-pass images of a point source before and after correction of the aberrations. In a slightly aberrated artificial eye a clear improvement was obtained after correction, and, although diffraction-limited performance was not achieved, the results were close to the theoretical predictions. In the two living eyes that we studied some benefit also appeared in the correction, but the performance was worse than that expected. We evaluated possible explanations for the relatively poor performance that was obtained in the human eye: an incorrect estimate of the ocular aberration, the limited spatial resolution of the modulator, and the dynamic changes in the ocular aberrations. Based on the results in the artificial eye, the first problem was not considered to be a major source of error. However, we showed that the spatial resolution of the liquid-crystal spatial light modulator limits the maximum correction to be attained. In addition, the changes in the ocular optics over time also impose a limit in the performance of static corrections.

- Abstract
The spatio-temporal Fourier transform is usually applied to determine the velocity of an object from a series of standard light intensity frames. In this paper the technique has been extended to determine the object acceleration. The techniques for velocity and acceleration determination based on the spatio-temporal Fourier transform have been applied to experimental low light level images. Under these conditions, the processing time is reduced so that, in those cases in which it is necessary to quickly obtain the object velocity or acceleration, low light level conditions would be advantageous, using intensity filters if necessary.

23. Expression of Human H-type α1,2-Fucosyltransferase Encoding for Blood Group H(O) Antigen in Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells

The human H(O) blood group is specified by the structure Fucα1-2Galβ1-R, but the factors regulating expression of this determinant on cell surface glycoconjugates are not well understood. To learn more about the regulation of H blood group expression, cDNA encoding the human H-type GDPFuc:β-D-galactoside α1,2-fucosyltransferase (α1,2FT) was stably transfected into Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. The new cell line, designated CHO(α1,2)FT, expressed surface neoglycans containing the H antigen. The structures of the fucosylated neoglycans in CHO(α1,2)FT cells and the distribution of these glycans on glycoproteins were characterized. Seventeen percent of the [3H]Gal-labeled glycopeptides from CHO(α1,2)FT cells bound to the immobilized H blood group-specific lectin Ulex europaeusagglutinin-I (UEA-I), whereas none from parental CHO cells bound to the lectin. The glycopeptides from CHO(α1,2)FT cells binding to UEA-I contained polylactosamine [3Galβ1-4GlcNAcβ1-]nwith the terminal sequence Fucα1-2Galβ1- 4GlcNAc-R. Fucosylation of the polylactosamine sequences on complex-type N-glycans in CHO(α1,2)FT cells caused a decrease in both sialylation and length of polylactosamine. Unexpectedly, only small amounts of terminal fucosylation was found in diantennary complex-type N-glycans. The O-glycans and glycolipids were not fucosylated by the H-type α1,2FT. Two major high molecular weight glycoproteins, one of which was shown to be the lysosome-associated membrane glycoprotein LAMP-1, preferentially contained the H-type structure and were bound by immobilized UEA-I. These results demonstrate that in CHO cells the expressed H-type α1,2FT does not indiscriminately fucosylate terminal galactosyl residues in complex-type N-glycans, but it favors glycans containing polylactosamine and dramatically alters their length and sialylation.

24. Binocular open-view instrument to measure aberrations and pupillary dynamics

- Abstract
We have designed and built a binocular Hartmann–Shack wave-front sensor using a single microlens array and camera for real-time aberration measurement of both eyes in an open-view configuration. Furthermore, the use of a long wavelength (1050 nm) laser diode makes the illumination source completely invisible, so that measurements can be unobtrusively performed while the subject stares at the visual world under realistic conditions. The setup provides a large dynamic range and simultaneous measurements of convergence, pupil size, accommodation, and aberrations. The open-view design not only offers the possibility of measuring the subject’s ocular optics under natural conditions but also allows coupling the device with other existing vision testing instruments and setups, which increases its potential to become a powerful tool for different visual optics studies.

25. Binocular adaptive optics vision analyzer with full control over the complex pupil functions

- Abstract
We present a binocular adaptive optics vision analyzer fully capable of controlling both amplitude and phase of the two complex pupil functions in each eye of the subject. A special feature of the instrument is its comparatively simple setup. A single reflective liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator working in pure phase modulation generates the phase profiles for both pupils simultaneously. In addition, another liquid crystal spatial light modulator working in transmission operates in pure intensity modulation to produce a large variety of pupil masks for each eye. Subjects perform visual tasks through any predefined variations of the complex pupil function for both eyes. As an example of the system efficiency, we recorded images of the stimuli through the system as they were projected at the subject’s retina. This instrument proves to be extremely versatile for designing and testing novel ophthalmic elements and simulating visual outcomes, as well as for further research of binocular vision.

26. Hybrid adaptive-optics visual simulator

- Abstract
We have developed a hybrid adaptive-optics visual simulator (HAOVS), combining two different phase-manipulation technologies: an optically addressed liquid-crystal phase modulator, relatively slow but capable of producing abrupt or discontinuous phase profiles; and a membrane deformable mirror, restricted to smooth profiles but with a temporal response allowing compensation of the eye's aberration fluctuations. As proof of concept, a phase element structured as discontinuous radial sectors was objectively tested as a function of defocus, and a correction loop was closed in a real eye. To further illustrate the capabilities of the device for visual simulation, we recorded extended images of different stimuli through the system by means of an external camera replacing the subject's eye. The HAOVS is specially intended as a tool for developing new ophthalmic optics elements, where it opens the possibility to explore designs with irregularities and/or discontinuities.

- Abstract
A binocular adaptive optics visual simulator is presented. The instrument allows for measuring and manipulating ocular aberrations of the two eyes simultaneously, while the subject performs visual testing under binocular vision. An important feature of the apparatus consists on the use of a single correcting device and wavefront sensor. Aberrations are controlled by means of a liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator, where the two pupils of the subject are projected. Aberrations from the two eyes are measured with a single Hartmann-Shack sensor. As an example of the potential of the apparatus for the study of the impact of the eye's aberrations on binocular vision, results of contrast sensitivity after addition of spherical aberration are presented for one subject. Different binocular combinations of spherical aberration were explored. Results suggest complex binocular interactions in the presence of monochromatic aberrations. The technique and the instrument might contribute to the better understanding of binocular vision and to the search for optimized ophthalmic corrections.

28. Statistical description of wave-front aberration in the human eye

- Abstract
The wave aberration of the human eye has been measured by means of a Hartmann–Shack wave-front sensor in a population of normal subjects. The set of data has been used to compute the phase distribution, the power spectrum, and the structure function for the average eye to analyze the statistics of the ocular aberration considered as a phase screen. The observed statistics fits the classical Kolmogorov model of a statistically homogeneous medium. These results can be of use in understanding the average effect of aberrations on the retinal image and can serve as a tool to analyze the consequences of ocular-aberration compensation by adaptive optics, customized ophtalmic elements, or refractive surgery.

- Abstract
To stimulate discussion around the topic of ‘carbohydrates’ and health, the Brazilian branch of the International Life Sciences Institute held the 11th International Functional Foods Workshop (1–2 December 2011) in which consolidated knowledge and recent scientific advances specific to the relationship between carbohydrates and health were presented. As part of this meeting, several key points related to dietary fiber, glycemic response, fructose, and impacts on satiety, cognition, mood, and gut microbiota were realized: 1) there is a need for global harmonization of a science-based fiber definition; 2) low-glycemic index foods can be used to modulate the postprandial glycemic response and may affect diabetes and cardiovascular outcomes; 3) carbohydrate type may influence satiety and satiation; glycemic load and glycemic index show links to memory, mood, and concentration; 4) validated biomarkers are needed to demonstrate the known prebiotic effect of carbohydrates; 5) negative effects of fructose are not evident when human data are systematically reviewed; 6) new research indicates that diet strongly influences the microbiome; and 7) there is mounting evidence that the intestinal microbiota has the ability to impact the gut–brain axis. Overall, there is much promise for development of functional foods that impact the microbiome and other factors relevant to health, including glycemic response (glycemic index/glycemic load), satiety, mood, cognition, and weight management.

- Abstract
This unit describes the antigenic stimulation of in vitro antibody production by B cells and the subsequent measurement of secreted antibodies. A generalized system for inducing in vitro antibody production is presented along with a procedure for quantifying the number of antibody‐producing cells by plaque‐forming cell (PFC) assays: the Cunningham‐Szenberg technique and the Jerne‐Nordin technique. The assay can be modified as described to measure all classes of antibodies or to enumerate total immunoglobulin‐secreting B cells. A protocol for preparing the resting B cells by Percoll gradient centrifugation is also described.
