Objectives: Poor Food security (FS) is associated with risk of diet-related diseases and rising healthcare costs. Produce Prescription Interventions (PRx) are emerging clinical tools to improve FS and diet quality, but their impact in families with children is not well established. This study evaluates the impact of a pediatric PRx on FS and nutrition-related behaviors.Methods: Adult caregivers of children (0-18) were enrolled within a 6-month produce delivery and nutrition education intervention. A validated food security survey was administered pre/post intervention to determine FS scores and “Food Secure” status. Statistical analyses tested pre-post differences in FS scores and proportion of scores within the “Food Secure” range. Semi-structured interviews were performed post-intervention to explore families’ experiences with low FS and healthy behaviors and were thematically analyzed.Results: Between October 2021 and December 2022, 82 families were enrolled, 65 completed FS survey at baseline and 54 completed it at post-intervention. FS scores improved post-intervention (P< .05) and a greater proportion of household- and child-level scores fell within the “Food Secure” range post-intervention (P< .05). Twenty-eight interviews were analyzed. Three salient themes were identified: (1) value of healthcare-based screening and intervention, (2) food and education motivate behavior change, and (3) perceptions of post-intervention lifestyle sustainability.Conclusions: Participation in the PRx was associated with improvements in FS and nutrition-related attitudes and behaviors. PRx can be implemented by health systems to improve FS and health behaviors associated with risk for diet-related diseases. Longer-term support may be needed to maintain healthy behavior changes associated with PRx participation.

This article centers on the materiality of Indigenous legal interactions with the viceroy in the special colonial court, the Juzgado General de Naturales, which was located, at least ostensibly, inside the viceregal palace in Mexico City. The partial destruction of the palace during a riot in 1692—a year that roughly bisected Spanish colonial rule in Mexico— serves as a focal point for exploring the dynamic history of personal encounters and physical space in the viceregal jurisdiction from the court's founding in the late sixteenth century through the eighteenth century. It surveys the architectural features of the palace, traces the viceroys’ disappearance from audiences with Indigenous subjects at the beginning of the seventeenth century, and charts native petitioners’ own growing reliance on proxies and papers rather than appearances in the court. By focusing on physical presence within the Juzgado’s operation, the court reveals itself as a space of absence and abstraction as much as pomp and procedure.

NMR spectroscopy was used to investigate the phenomenon of ribosome-amplified metabolism or RAMBO between pyruvate kinase and ribosomes. Because the concentration of ribosomes increases as the cell grows, ribosome binding interactions may regulate metabolic fluxes by altering the distribution of bound and free enzymes. Pyruvate kinase (PK) catalyzes the last step of glycolysis and represents a major drug target for controlling bacterial infections. The binding of metabolic enzymes to ribosomes creates protein quinary structures with altered catalytic activities. NMR spectroscopy and chemical cross-linking combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry were used to establish that PK binds to ribosome at three independent sites, the L1 stalk, the A site, and the mRNA entry pore. The bioanalytical methodology described characterizes the altered kinetics and confirms the specificity of pyruvate kinase–ribosome interaction, affording an opportunity to investigate the ribosome dependence of metabolic reactions under solution conditions that closely mimic the cytosol. Expanding on the concept of ribosomal heterogeneity, which describes variations in ribosomal constituents that contribute to the specificity of cellular processes, this work firmly establishes the reciprocal process by which ribosome-dependent quinary interactions affect metabolic activity.

Nontargeted (NTA) and suspect screening analyses (SSA) aim to detect and identify unknown compounds of interest from a given sample. The complexity and diversity of NTA and SSA methodologies necessitate the use of a comprehensive quality control standard mixture to determine if methods are fit for purpose, but to our knowledge, such a standard has not been developed that can be used by multiple disciplines, nor is one readily available. This work describes the development and analysis of a proposed nontargeted standard/quality control mixture for NTA and SSA applications using liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization-high resolution-mass spectrometry. Considerations in its development included achieving diversity of compounds with respect to elemental composition, molecular weight, retention time, and ionization in positive and/or negative ion modes, which resulted in the inclusion of 89 compounds. The utility of the standard mixture was applied on our own NTA and SSA workflows where sample preparation efficiency and potential sources of error due to instrumental and data processing methods were evaluated. Some areas in need of improvement were identified, such as hydrophilic compound detection and molecular formula generation for compounds containing fluorine. However, our overall methodology was found to be fit for purpose and we were able to establish thresholds to increase reliability and throughput of reported results.

Despite this interest, the field lacks a viable instrument that can be used to measure student agency with elementary students. The authors share the Student Agency Profile, a survey instrument that can measure student agency in literacy contexts. The authors provide insight into the validation process, which included 1,794 elementary students, and direction on how to administer, score, and interpret results. A central aim is to show how the survey can be used in practice while supporting teachers in their efforts to cultivate student agency in today's diverse classrooms.
